NOW Weddings Publisher Letter

A Letter From The

Publisher Dear Readers, Welcome to the 2024 Fall+Winter issue of NOW Weddings Magazine! In this issue we bring you not one, but two fashion editorials. The first, Ethereal Elements, is my personal passion project for this issue. I styled and photographed this editorial myself, carefully choosing each detail to capture the essence of the 4 Elements of Earth, Water, Air and Fire. I am immensely grateful to my friend Kellie Levy who helped me find my direction for this editorial and hosted the shoot at her venue, The Cannery, in New Orleans. I couldn’t have asked for a more amazing team of wedding vendors to collaborate on this photo shoot, including Ashley Bateman and the Nola Flora team who created the beautiful florals, DeQuindra Rouzan and Amanda Mautemps of Faces of Virtue Beauty Studio who styled the models’ hair and makeup looks to perfection, Rishita Monga of Ajoonii whose jewelry I discovered just days before the photo shoot and fell in love with immediately, Mari Brisco of Passport Polish who created the custom manicures for our models, Fawn & Sparrow whose crystal crowns were absolutely perfect, and Calla Blanche who provided the stunning gowns we featured in this editorial. For our second editorial, we headed to Mobile, Alabama to photograph a fairytale-inspired editorial at Crown Hall Events. NOW Weddings Magazine

I’d like to thank our fabulous vendor team who helped make this shoot magical: Mary Megan Parker of MM Parker Events who directed the shoot, Sheila Kirksey of Rose Bud Flowers who created the bouquets, Jodie Willis who styled our models hair and makeup, and Bliss Bridal and I Do Bridal & Formal whose gowns we featured in the editorial. In this issue, we have selected 6 beautiful Southern wedding stories to share with you and, as always, have included LOTS of advice to help you as you plan your dream wedding. As you flip through the pages, I hope you find inspiration, joy, and a touch of magic that only Southern charm can bring. I also hope you’ll join us for one (or more!) of our upcoming bridal shows - we have two scheduled in New Orleans - September 24, 2024 and January 21, 2025 and one scheduled in Mobile at the Battle House Hotel on January 12, 2025. You can find more information about our shows at theNOWWeddingEvent.com Warmest wishes,

NOW Non-profit Spotlight: Prodisee Pantry

A Heartfelt Gesture: Giving Back Through Your Wedding WHEN PLANNING A WEDDING, COUPLES OFTEN find themselves immersed in a whirlwind of decisions, from selecting the perfect venue to curating a memorable menu. One choice that’s gaining popularity is the decision to donate to charity in addition to or even in lieu of traditional wedding favors. This trend is not only a meaningful way to celebrate love but also a chance to make a positive impact. NOW Weddings Publisher Jessica Burke, strongly believes in the importance of giving back and earmarks a percentage of NOW Bridal Show ticket sales for each show the magazine produces to be donated to a local non-profit. In southern Alabama, that non-profit is Prodisee Pantry. Filling plates with healthy food and filling hearts with hope is Prodisee Pantry’s mission and their passion. In other words, food and love are shared. Gatherings for engagements, bridal showers, rehearsal dinners and, of course, weddings are where love and food are the centerpiece. “The work that Prodisee Pantry does in their community is inspiring,” says Burke. “And I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention their generosity beyond Baldwin County, AL. In 2005, they came to the aid of their Gulf Coast neighbors after Hurricane Katrina devastated our area. As a New Orleans native who was directly impacted by Katrina and the generosity of others who came to our aid, it is a wonderful feeling to be able to give back all these years later. I would love to encourage engaged couples to consider charitable giving as part of their wedding.” According to Prodisee Pantry’s Executive Director,

Deann Servos, “this new trend of supporting a nonprofit by gathering your bridal party and serving is an awesome way to celebrate while sharing. It can be as simple as packing food boxes for the hungry and then heading to a local restaurant for a simple meal instead of hosting a weekend getaway.” Servos continues, “Or, perhaps it’s asking for donations to your favorite charity instead of having a gift registry.” Like most non-profits, volunteers are the heart and energy of Prodisee Pantry. They make sure Baldwin County’s food insecure families have access to healthy locally-sourced fresh foods and connections to other needed services. Prodisee Pantry is so much more than groceries. Families and individuals get encouragement, referrals and can walk over to dozens of onsite supportive services including: employment and job training, free legal help, medical, dental and mental healthcare, housing and homeless, aging and veteran services, budget counseling, addiction and drug education, and so much more! Since 2003, this nonprofit’s caring volunteers have filled shopping carts with food and shared hope over 220,000 times with the families struggling financially due to unemployment or underemployment, poverty, crises or natural disasters.

For additional information about Prodisee Pantry, call 251-626-1720 or visit www.prodiseepantry.org or follow on Facebook @ItsAboutHunger or Instagram @ProdiseePantry

An Intimate, Destination Wedding MAY 20, 2024 | NEW ORLEANS, LA PHOTOGRAPHY BY IBAY PHOTOGRAPHY

THEIR STORY Tiffany and Jeff met in middle school. Years later Jeff would plan a surprise dinner following a sunset boat ride in Orange Beach, Alabama, where he proposed to Tiffany. “He proposed with a gorgeous sunset in the background,” says Tiffany. She, of course, said “Yes!”

42 | NOW | nowweddingsmagazine.com

nowweddingsmagazine.com | NOW | 43

ABOUT THE WEDDING Alabamaians Tiffany and Jeff wanted to elope, but as Tiffany says “neither families were having it” so they chose the next best thing: an intimate, destination New Orleans wedding with just their closest friends and family. “Since New Orleans is only 2 hours, we come there often,” she shares. “We both love the city and the sites, and knew it would be a perfect place for our wedding.” Tiffany found her wedding dress at Bliss Bridal in Fairhope, AL - the first bridal boutique she visited and the couple sourced their wedding rings and invitations in Alabama also. To help them plan their destination wedding, Tiffany and Jeff turned to Kristen Rauch of PK Events, based in New Orleans. “We absolutely LOVED our wedding planners,” says Tiffany. “Kristen and Claire were the best. They made it non-stressful and knew exactly how I wanted everything.” The wedding day began with a First Look on the front porch of Solari Orleans, overlooking the St. Charles Avenue streetcar line. Tiffany and Jeff then said their vows under an arch of white flowers with their 18 guests looking on. The newlyweds then treated their guests to an intimate dinner catered by 12 Seasons Catering. Tiffany describes the wedding day as “classy and elegant, just like I wanted it.”

Your Guest List MANY COUPLES STRUGGLE WITH HOW TO NARROW DOWN THEIR GUEST LIST and may find themselves feeling obligated and overwhelmed by people who expect to be invited. Below are our top tips on how to decide who makes the guest list.

ONE

Welch Photography & Video

Start to categorize potential guests by the inner group of “not a doubt in your mind they must be invited and will attend” and then work your way out. Next would be people who are an important part of your life and will continue to be. Finally, categorize people who would be nice to invite and have present but who aren’t playing a huge role in your life currently. This might be coworkers, old high school friends or even your boss. Don’t feel obligated to invite everyone you know. This is about you and once you categorize people into those groups, it will help you see what your priorities are and how many of the last group you can realistically invite once your “must haves” are taken into account.

to te will be able vi in ou y e on y p ever in numbers, kee Remember, not ed it m li re a ou if y If come. However, aximum count. m r ou y to se clo send your guest list rage 15-20% will ve a on , re a sp to you have room their regrets.

TWO

Decide on a child policy. Depending on your situation, it may not be an option for you, but if it is possible to have an adult-only reception, this will definitely help with your guest count numbers. If you are trying to cut down the guest list due to cost rather than number of people present, make sure to ask your caterer if they offer a child’s plate or a lower price for children under a specific age. This goes for your bar service also.

THREE

Consider giving your parents a set number of people they can invite so it doesn’t spiral out of control (i.e., mom inviting everyone she rides with on her Mardi Gras float).

46 | NOW | nowweddingsmagazine.com

If you are still struggling to get your guest count to the number you need, add in criteria such as “only people you’ve had a meaningful relationship with in the last year”. Another criteria could be “they only get a +1 if it is someone we have met or who they have been in a relationship with for longer than a year”. Whatever factors you think work for your group, this will ensure that you’re fair to both you and your partner’s guest lists while still being able to narrow things down.

Your Rehearsal Dinner

Rae Leytham Photography

THE REHEARSAL DINNER IS THE TIME TO REFLECT and enjoy the company of close friends and family before tomorrow’s big event. It’s a wonderful time to present gifts to family members and the wedding party and thank them for supporting you during all of your wedding festivities. Restaurants, hotels and other establishments in NOW WEDDINGS MAGAZINE are some of the most beautiful in the south. Visit some of our amazing vendors and sample what they have to offer!

THE BASICS WHO HOSTS Traditionally, the groom’s family hosts and pays for the Rehearsal Dinner.

WHERE There are no rules for location, but ideally it will be somewhere convenient to the ceremony site (if doing an actual rehearsal). Private residences, restaurants or a unique location special to the couple are all great options.

WHO TO INVITE All immediate family (parents, grandparents, siblings and spouses), members of the wedding party (and their plus ones), and out of town guests; other wedding guests may be invited if the budget allows.

LEVEL OF FORMALITY This is entirely dependent upon the couples’ desires and wedding style and the hosts’ budget. Anything from an informal backyard barbecue to the most formal 5 course seated dinner at a restaurant may be chosen.

Better Together JUNE 1, 2024 | NEW ORLEANS, LA PHOTOGRAPHY BY AMIN RUSSELL PHOTOGRAPHY

THEIR STORY Jewel and Paul’s love story began when they met at a Southern University homecoming. When Paul decided to propose, he chose New Year’s Eve at Jewel’s favorite restaurant, Mike Anderson’s. Paul presented her with a beautiful bouquet of roses and she would eventually choose the wedding colors from that bouquet! “It was so sweet and romantic,” says Jewel.

ABOUT THE WEDDING Jewel’s favorite moment of the day was the First Look. “Our first look was so exciting!” shares Jewel. “We both were so nervous and anxious. I kept thinking to myself "please don't cry and mess up your makeup" but of course I did. He was scared to turn around, worried he was going to cry also…but in the end it was the best decision we could have made to have our First Look. We were able to reassure each other and have a moment to ourselves before the wedding.” For the ceremony, Jewel’s brothers gave her away in place of her late father and her aunts stood in for her late mother. “This meant the world to me,” she shares. “Our wedding was filled with so many special moments it is hard to sum them up. But I can say having my daughters as my bridesmaids was one of the most special moments of them all.” After an intimate ceremony witnessed by family and friends, Jewel and Paul celebrated with their guests at a beautiful reception that included dinner, dancing, and a second line with Tidal Wave Brass Band and an appearance by the Zulu Tramps!

The Spark Of Love MAY 4, 2024 | PICAYUNE, MS PHOTOGRAPHY BY BLACKBIRD CREATIVE

THEIR STORY “Kevin had planned a beautiful, low-key proposal in our new house,” shares Tessa. “He had recruited his brother, Dustin, to help him decorate our living room with gorgeous roses and candles.” What Kevin didn’t know is that Tessa was going to be home early that day. “[I] usually tell him when I’m on my way home,” says Tessa. “I remember even thinking that I should text him, but I was thinking it wasn’t a big deal.” When Tessa arrived home early, Kevin hadn’t had the chance to change clothes or set up a camera or have their song playing when she walked in the door with her arms full of groceries. ”I walked in and dumped my bags on the floor and…when I finally turned around, [I] saw Kevin standing there holding a ring box with beautiful red and white roses decorating our mantle and candles all around. Our dogs were even sitting perfectly on the couch,” she says. It took a moment for Tessa to realize what was happening, before she yelled “Are you??” Kevin nodded and then got down on one knee. “I blacked out with anxious excitement,” says Tessa. “Kevin totally surprised me with the proposal, and I guess I surprised him too, but it was absolutely perfect and totally fitting for us.” 68 | NOW | nowweddingsmagazine.com

ABOUT THE WEDDING Tessa and Kevin celebrated their wedding weekend at The Henry Smith House in Picayune, MS, which is owned by Kevin’s brother Dustin, who also designed all the florals and decor for the wedding. The couple said “I do” on the Garden Lawn under a beautiful archway with stained glass panels suspended as a backdrop. Tessa walked down the aisle lined with lush florals beneath crystal chandeliers while Kevin waited for her with their dog Revi by his side. After sealing their union with a kiss, cold spark fountains erupted as they walked back up the aisle to the gorgeous reception that awaited them. The newlyweds danced the night away with their family and friends while enjoying delicious food from Messina’s Catering. One highlight of the reception was Tessa’s Pickle Bar - a display of pickle-themed snacks! The evening ended with a sparkler exit and a fireworks display.

Do I like their overall style shown in their portfolio? 5. Do they understand the religious and/ or cultural traditions that are important to us? 6. Am I comfortable with the cost of hiring them? 7. CONTRACTS 101 WEDDING PLANNING IS FUN AND EXCITING, but it’s also a business. As a bride, you need to be business savvy as you finalize all the details of your big day. One of the most crucial things to consider is having a clear and solid contract for every wedding vendor and service. example, may want to substitute Chilean n Get everything in writing and make salmon with Alaskan salmon because of sure you’re clear on all the terms. Still you may have some flexibility if you need it. n Ask your vendors if they allow changes or modifications to a contract. They may allow it, but they may charge extra for the courtesy. For liability reasons, most vendors want to make sure they’re covered in case of an accident or wedding day mishap. With all vendors, make sure you have a backup plan in case of an emergency and always try to be calm and fair. Remember having a contract is a good thing. It protects you and your vendors on your special day.

Your Wedding Décor IF YOU’RE PLANNING YOUR wedding at a “blank canvas” site, you’ll definitely need to make use of rental services. Even if you hold your event at an all-inclusive venue, you may find that you want to personalize the space with specialty linen or furniture. Décor rental companies have so much to offer from practical items like tables and chairs to fanciful thrones, ambiance creating lighting and special effects and more!

Getting Started

tables, mirrored disco balls, portable restrooms, and photo booths, party rental companys can find just about anything – all you have to do is ask.

Rental and Décor

Shop Around After determining what type of items you’re looking for, it’s time to shop. To find a reputable party rental company, consult with your wedding coordinator, and the event planners for your ceremony and reception sites for recommendations. Once you’ve narrowed your selections to a few rental companies, make appointments so you can check out each company’s inventory.

Rae Leytham Photography

Before you try and select a party rental company, you’ll want to sit down with your wedding coordinator or the event planners for your ceremony and reception sites to determine exactly what you’ll need. Venues often offer linens and tableware, so you’ll want to be certain of what you’ll be receiving from your wedding venues. Once you determine what you already have, you’ll then know what you’ll still need to make your celebration complete. No matter how big or small, it’s likely a party rental company can help you find it. From lounge furniture, roulette

real wedding MARY HANNAH FARNELL + J. KENNY CROW III

Burning Love DECEMBER 9, 2023 | FAIRHOPE, AL PHOTOGRAPHY BY RAE LEYTHAM PHOTOGRAPHY

THEIR STORY Mary Hannah and Kenny met online as many couples these days do. “On our second date we almost burned Kenny's house down,” says Mary Hannah. Luckily, Kenny was able to put out the fire, but the incident gave them a deeper insight. “Knowing that the house and ourselves could survive such a crazy event on our second date meant we could survive anything,” says Mary Hannah. Kenny’s mom helped him set up the perfect proposal. She brought Mary Hannah to the end of the pier at their family home to take a picture with Kenny. Once there, she told Mary Hannah to wait so she could go find her phone and Kenny for the photo. As she made her way back down the pier, she passed Kenny and didn’t come back. “I was suspicious but didn't think too much of it,” says Mary Hannah. When Kenny reached Mary Hannah, he started a heartfelt conversation. She couldn’t help but think, “THIS IS IT!!!” “But he gave me a side hug then walked away,” she says. Her disappointment was short lived, however, because moments later he dropped to his knees and proposed. “Of course I said yes with a lot of tears,” she says.

ABOUT THE WEDDING On the day Mary Hannah and Kenny planned to marry, the weather forecast was freezing temperatures and a 75% chance of rain. “Despite all odds, our wedding on December 9th was sunny and 75 degrees,” says Mary Hannah. “It was the most amazing wedding present.” The couple said ‘I do’ at Sacred Heart Chapel with a reception following at Kenny’s parents’ home, the Crow’s Nest. “It was very special to be able to have our reception somewhere that we visit quite often. I get to relive our wedding day everytime we head to the Crow's Nest,” says Mary Hannah. “My favorite part was getting to see Kenny for the first time on our wedding day,” says Mary Hannah. “Seeing him made all of my nerves go away.” For Kenny, his first thought when seeing Mary Hannah on the wedding day was, “That is the most beautiful woman I've seen.” The couple’s wedding invitations included a special nod to their proposal. “I took a picture of the sunset on the night that we got engaged,” says Mary Hannah.”I knew I wanted to do something with it. My dear friend Kara Brown painted us this gorgeous watercolor and we were able to incorporate it in the most perfect way!” At the end of the day, Mary Hannah and Kenny departed the wedding at sunset, cruising off on a boat - a moment that Mary Hannah describes as a close second for her favorite part of the day.

The color of the rose further refines its meaning: Red Roses: Red roses are the quintessential symbol of love and desire, perfect for expressing deep passion and romance. White Roses: Representing purity, innocence, and new beginnings, white roses are a classic choice for weddings. They symbolize the purity of the couple’s love and the fresh start they are embarking on together. Pink Roses: These convey admiration, gratitude, and joy. They are ideal for couples who want to express their deep appreciation for each other and their happiness. CREATING YOUR PERFECT FLORAL STORY When choosing flowers for your wedding, consider not only their beauty but also their meanings. Each flower can add a layer of symbolism and emotion to your special day, helping to tell the story of your love. Whether you opt for the classic romance of roses, the lush elegance of peonies, or the cheerful brightness of sunflowers, your wedding flowers will reflect your unique love story.

White Tulips: Symbolizing forgiveness and worthiness, white tulips can represent a fresh start and the couple’s pure intentions.

As you work with your florist to design your wedding arrangements, don’t be afraid to mix and match different flowers to create a bouquet that is as unique as your love. Consider the colors, shapes, and scents that resonate with you and your partner, and choose flowers that hold special meanings for both of you. By understanding the language of flowers, you can create a wedding that is beautiful, deeply meaningful, and personal.

Their sunny disposition and vibrant yellow petals make them perfect for summer weddings. Sunflowers can represent the warmth and happiness of the couple’s love and their steadfast commitment to each other.

Ultimately, the most important thing is that your wedding flowers reflect the love and joy you share as a couple. Whether you choose traditional blooms or something more unconventional, let your heart guide you in creating a floral masterpiece that will make your wedding day unforgettable.

real wedding ABBY BENDER + PATRICK SULLIVAN

A Dream Come True DECEMBER 15, 2023 | NEW ORLEANS, LA PHOTOGRAPHY BY WELCH PHOTOGRAPHY & VIDEO

THEIR STORY Abby, “a true NOLA girl, born and raised” and Patrick, a Florida native met in 2022 when both were living in New Orleans. “Our paths crossed at Vals, a cozy Mexican restaurant,” says Abby. “We spent the entire afternoon talking and laughing, knowing we had found something special.” Patrick proposed on the rooftop of Abby’s parent’s condo complex. Earlier in the day, Patrick slipped out to run errands and returned just as Abby was settling into a lounge chair by the pool. “As I stood up to greet him, he dropped down to one knee and pulled out a small, blue box,” she shares. “His eyes shining with love, he asked me to be his wife. I was taken aback, but in the best possible way. We’d talked about our future together, but I hadn’t expected him to propose so soon. But as I looked out at the stunning view of the warehouse district, I knew that this was right. We’d found our own little slice of happiness in this city, and I wanted to spend forever with this man. I said, “Yes!” as we hugged and celebrated.”

ABOUT THE WEDDING Before they said their vows at the Hotel Peter and Paul, Abby and Patrick shared a First Look. “As Abby was walking towards me, I was able to see her through a reflection in a window, so I had a bit of a heads up and started to smile before she touched my shoulder,” shares Patrick. “As soon as I turned around, I was immediately awestruck.” “I was beyond nervous about our First Look,” shares Abby.”But as I took a deep breath and approached him, my nervousness gave way to excitement. I couldn’t help but think, ‘Wow, he’s looking so handsome in his dress blues.’ The look on his face was like he saw me for the first time all over again.” “When we exchanged our vows and sealed our love with a kiss a few hours later, I felt like I was floating on air,” shares Abby “One of the most memorable moments of our wedding was when our 5-month-old daughter, Amelia Mae, was walked down the aisle by her godfather, Jeffery Fingerman,” says Abby. “This touching moment was a beautiful blend of family, friendship, and love, creating a cherished memory for everyone present.” Abby and Patrick shared their first dance as husband and wife to “Falling Like the Stars” by James Arthur. “It was truly magical,” Abby shares. “We were met with cheers as we glided across the dance floor. It felt like a dream come true, and I’ll always treasure that memory.”

Let Them Eat Cake NO MATTER HOW BIG, STYLISH or expensive your wedding is, it won’t be complete without a wedding dessert. Traditionally this dessert is in the form of a wedding cake, but don’t feel like this is your only option. Have some fun! Wedding pie anyone? Milk and Cookies bar? Your options are limitless and oh so sweet!

Anatomy of a Wedding Cake Frostings BUTTER CREAM A creamy, spreadable icing that’s made from butter and sugar. FONDANT A thick concoction made from sugar and gelatin that is rolled out flat and then draped over the cake to provide a completely smooth, firm surface for decorating. ROYAL A frosting made by beating together sugar and egg whites. It hardens when dried, so it is great for dots, lace or lattice work. GANACHE This fancy term is simply chocolate melted with heavy cream. This frosting makes a beautiful shiny glaze on cakes and cookies. If you chill a ganache, beat it until it’s fluffy and stiff, then form it into balls, you’ll end up with truffles.

Icings MARZIPAN a rolled paste of ground almonds, egg whites and sugar that can be draped and shaped. SUGARPASTE Also called gum paste, it is used like marzipan to make beautiful flowers and decorations. DRAGEES Hard little sugar balls are painted with edible gold or silver paint.

PULLED SUGAR Boiled sugar, water, and corn syrup used to create beautiful designs like roses and bows.

Filling The filling is what really gives a wedding cake its personality. Filling separates the layers of a cake, adding additional flavor and richness. Filling is usually fruit or cream based and depending on the number of tiers, many couples choose two or three different fillings. 92 | NOW | nowweddingsmagazine.com

When You Know, You Know MARCH 24, 2024 | NEW ORLEANS, LA PHOTOGRAPHY BY STACY MARKS

THEIR STORY Rachel and Alex’s story started like many modern love stories: a quick Hinge conversation on December 1st, 2018 followed by a first date on December 2nd, a second date, third date 2 days later, and a fourth date 2 days after that. They made their relationship official on January 11. “Sometimes when you know, you know,” says Rachel. Alex proposed on Rachel’s birthday. Along with a beautiful ring, he gave her the best present of all - the promise to marry her and spend the rest of their lives together.

ABOUT THE WEDDING Rachel and Alex said “I do” at the NOPSI Hotel in New Orleans on March 24, 2024. They included several Jewish traditions in their wedding day including signing the Ketubah (the Jewish marriage contract), The Hora, and Breaking the Glass. “In Judaism, the breaking of the glass at a wedding is a symbolic hope that you will spend as many years together in happiness as it would take to collect all the pieces of the glass and reassemble it,” Rachel explains. Following the wedding ceremony, the couple treated their guests to a Second Line through the streets of downtown New Orleans. A reception followed with dinner and dancing. Rachel and Alex’s dog Rex, who they adopted during the pandemic, and Rachel’s family’s dog Lexi made appearances at the wedding as miniatures on the wedding cake as well as lifesize cardboard cutouts, and Lexi even served as Rachel’s “flower girl.” The reception ended with a sparkler exit and then the newlyweds met their guests at Pat O’s to continue celebrating.

Tux Talk THE TASK OF SELECTING the groom’s attire is his decision. Whether purchased or rented, his attire should complement the time and feel of your wedding!

FORMAL WEAR Choosing a tux might just be the easiest wedding-related decision you’ll make. After all, it’s hard to go wrong with a suit that has changed so modestly in the past 120 years. In fact, if you compare today’s tuxedo with the one your father wore at his wedding, you’ll likely see only slight variations (provided dad didn’t wear a ruffled shirt). The single-breasted notch lapel tuxedo, is a classic look that never goes out of style. Searching for your own take on the traditional tux? From ties and vests to buttons and shoes, here’s the straight talk on your options, along with styles that best suit your groom’s silhouette.

Tie one on When it comes to ties there’s standard, and then there’s spectacular. While the classic bow tie will always be a perennial favorite, there are other options for grooms who choose to venture outside the norm. One of the most popular styles, the four-in-hand, is similar to a standard business tie. Paired with a matching fullbacked vest in a subtle pattern, a four-inhand is the top choice.

Jacket required The key to a flattering tuxedo often lies in the jacket. The right one can whittle the waist, lengthen the torso, or add the 116 | NOW | nowweddingsmagazine.com

appearance of broader shoulders. The most common jacket is single breasted with a shawl lapel. This look is perfect for both short and tall men with more of a stocky or husky appearance. The same jacket with a notched lapel would flatter a short, thin groom because the notch in the lapel gives the appearance of broader shoulders. A double-breasted jacket is great for thinner men because the eyes are drawn to the two rows of buttons at the midsection and gives the illusion of girth. With a double-breasted jacket, the shoulders can also be padded a bit to give the wearer the appearance of broader shoulders while still retaining the look of his trim waistline.

Somewhere between black & white The color of your groom’s tuxedo is up to the two of you. Take into account the formality of your celebration, along with the time of day. If you’re planning an afternoon ceremony, a gray tuxedo with a stroller jacket is the standard look. A more casual celebration closer to evening might call for a white dinner jacket with black trousers and tie. A formal evening affair warrants the classic black tuxedo. Keep in mind, however, that traditions are just that and the two of you should choose the style and color that you want, no matter the time of day or the formality of the occasion.

menswear r e d r o d n select a our prior to y s h t n o m 6 ate wedding d

Finish the look Finally, complete the formal look with matching socks and shoes. The guys’ socks should either be the same color as their shoes, or show some personality and match the colors in your wedding, which make for some great photo ops. Nowadays men are choosing less formal shoes and also showing personality with matching “Chucks” or “Toms.” But if needed, formal shoes can be rented from your formalwear company. Styles vary from slip-on versions with a parade shine to mock wingtips in classic black.

WHAT TO ASK PROSPECTS n What type of attire do you suggest based on the time, date, location and formality of our event? n Do you have the attire that we want in stock or does it need to be ordered? n Are shoes and accessories included in the price? n How far in advance do we need to make reservations? n Do the members of the groom’s party need to be fitted in person? Do you offer fittings, pressings and last minute alterations? n When does the attire need to be returned? n What is your damage policy? n What are your payment terms? n What is your cancellation policy?

Groomsmen Responsibilities CHOOSING YOUR GROOMSMEN IS AN IMPORTANT decision. Your groomsmen are critical in supporting you from the early stages of wedding planning to the culmination of your celebrations. Use this list as a roadmap for them to navigate their roles effectively, ensuring they are prepared to undertake the tasks ahead with dedication and enthusiasm.

Before the Wedding ATTEND BACHELOR PARTY n P articipate in the planning and attend the bachelor party to celebrate the groom’s last days of singlehood. HELP WITH PREWEDDING EVENTS n A ssist in planning and attending pre-wedding events such as the rehearsal dinner and any other gatherings. PURCHASE OR RENT ATTIRE n Coordinate with the groom and other groomsmen to ensure everyone has their attire ready well before the wedding day.

ASSIST THE GROOM n Help the groom with any last-minute preparations, calm nerves, and ensure he is ready for the ceremony. TRANSPORTATION n Ensure the groom arrives at the ceremony venue on time. Coordinate transportation for the wedding party if needed. USHER GUESTS n Assist in seating and guiding guests to their designated places before the ceremony. HOLD THE RINGS n The Best Man is responsible for keeping the wedding rings safe until they are needed during the ceremony.

ASSIST WITH WEDDING PLANNING n Offer support to the groom in deciding on wedding details, if needed.

PARTICIPATE IN THE CEREMONY n Walk down the aisle, stand by the groom, and participate in any ceremony rituals as required.

SELECTING THE HAIR AND MAKEUP ARTISTS FOR YOUR WEDDING DAY is key to achieving your dream bridal look. Here’s a list of questions to ask potential wedding hair and makeup artists you’re considering for your wedding.

n Do you offer a trial session before the wedding day? What is included in the trial, and how much does it cost? How do you handle feedback and adjustments after the trial session? Are you open to making changes based on my preferences? n What brands and types of makeup products do you use? Are they suitable for all skin types? n Will you be the one personally handling my wedding day hair and makeup, or do you work with a team? If you have a team, can I meet or see examples of their work as well?

Bridal Hair Trends: Embracing Tradition with a Modern Twist By Kasey Smith, Kasey Smith Beauty As seasons change, so do trends. As a bridal hair and makeup artist, I see inspiration photos in my email week after week. While there are some styles that remain popular season after season, I love seeing the way new styles come into fashion. If you’re planning your bridal look, I highly recommend adding these styles onto your mood board!

122 | NOW | nowweddingsmagazine.com

Right now, we are seeing many traditional favorites with a fresh twist. Some of my favorites include voluminous high updos, glamorous Hollywood waves and chic ponytails. French twists are a timeless favorite that have made a huge comeback recently. I predict they’ll really be taking hold on brides and bridesmaids in the coming seasons - and for good reason! You can tailor this style to match your taste - from classic and chic to more relaxed and tousled. It’s the perfect style to choose if you want to get your hair off your neck and not worry about curls falling throughout the night.

making waves. Since then, the style has become popular with brides wanting a more relaxed updo - and it’s one of my favorites! There’s so many ways to put a spin on this style. You can keep it sleek and chic or give it some voluminous glam waves. This is also such a fun style to adorn with accessories, too.

“ It’s important to choose a look

that allows you to feel like an

Additionally, we’re seeing a resurgence of high updos - and this isn’t your 2000s prom style! Some brides choose to take inspiration from sources like Bridgerton for a true Victorian-inspired romantic look. This is a perfect choice for the curly girl looking to enhance her natural texture. Alternatively, you can choose a more cool-girl-chic high updo with loose, wavy pieces flowing about.

Speaking of accessories, I think simplicity is having a major moment right now for bridal hair pieces. Delicate hairpins and pearl embellishments are perfect for adding a touch of sparkle without overwhelming the overall look. These understated accessories complement your style and enhance the overall ensemble.

elevated version

Sleek styles have also been in the spotlight as of late and I don’t think those are going anywhere either. However, I do predict our colder weather brides will want to embrace movement and texture within their hair. As temperatures drop and brides become more comfortable wearing their hair down thanks to the drop in heat and humidity, curls and volume will be back in the spotlight.

of yourself. ”

For those brides opting to wear their hair down, silky Hollywood waves are all the rage. Again, this style can be tailored to your personal style. Some brides want every wave perfectly laid upon the other with a voluminous Jessica Rabbit-inspired side part. Another option I see trending is what I’d call fluffy glam waves. These waves share the same pattern as a traditional glam wave but are much looser and piecey. You can choose a side part tuck, a sleek middle part à la Kim K, or leave it all down in front for a more relaxed look. Finally, I’m predicting more and more ponytails will be seen on brides and their bridal parties. In 2023, there was a big resurgence of the party pony thanks to Barbiecore

No matter what hairstyle you choose (trending or not), the important thing is to feel confident and beautiful on your wedding day. It’s important to choose a look that allows you to feel like an elevated version of yourself. With guidance from the right stylist, you can capture the essence of this season’s trends while still remaining true to your style. Kasey Smith is a hair and makeup artist based in New Orleans, LA. She loves offering a wide variety of hairstyles to her brides – from Hollywood waves to big, Rapunzel braids – along with her signature glowy, natural makeup looks. Memories Captured

Rae Leytham Photography

CAPTURE THOSE ONCE-IN-A-LIFETIME memories with professional photography and video! Make sure your photographer and videographer will catch all the important aspects of your wedding. You need to decide on this service as soon as possible in the planning phase to be sure you get the best available.

Photographers and Videographers Find a Photographer or Videographer Who Matches Your Style. This may seem easy, but there’s often more to consider about a photographer than his or her website. You need to work with a professional photographer who shoots in a style that suits you. If you’re a really unstructured couple, you may love a fly-on-the-wall approach to shooting a wedding; but for a more traditional look, you’ll want a photographer who shoots a mix of portraits and candids so you can fill your album with posed pictures and still have the benefit of getting some fun candids. The best way to gauge a photographer’s style? Ask to check out an entire wedding the photographer recently shot. Look for photos that convey an overall sense of the day in a style that you love.

Get to know your photographer by shooting some engagement photos. You’ll get some great shots and you’ll get a sense of how your photographer works. You can also run through your wedding photos ahead of time. Many couples dress up in their wedding attire before the big day to shoot photos in a relaxed setting without time restrictions.

ask potential photographers these questions 1. May we see your references, portfolio and past wedding samples? 2. Will you be the one photographing/ filming my wedding? 3. What style do you specialize in (candid, portraits, etc.)? 4. Have you ever worked in our wedding venue before? 5. Will someone assist you on the wedding day? 6. Are you familiar with the lighting and layout at our venue(s)? 7. What are your packages and what do they include (number and size of photos, albums, additional costs)? 8. For videographer, what is the price for additional copies? Do we need to provide a song list to be played along with the video? 9. Do you offer overtime? What is the rate? 10. Can we purchase the negatives/ digital files/raw footage? If not, how long do you keep them on file? 11. What are your payment terms? Are there any additional charges we should know about? 12. What is your cancellation policy?

MATTERS WRITTEN BY: Jessica Burke

YOUR WEDDING DAY WILL GO BY IN THE BLINK OF AN EYE. ALL THE months of planning will, in just a few short hours, be nothing more than a memory. It’s important to document your wedding day from the big “I do” to the smallest detail. Finding the right photographer and videographer to capture your wedding is important. Read that twice, then read on. Quality photographers and videographers are not inexpensive and may be your biggest expense after your reception venue. However, unlike many of your other wedding purchases, photography and video have longevity. Your wedding album and video will help you treasure and relive those special moments. Don’t entrust this once in a lifetime occasion to just anyone! “This is one of the most important days of your

126 | NOW | nowweddingsmagazine.com

life. Even if you are shy about being on video, think about the future and how your kids and grandkids will be able to see the memories from your day,” says LaVina Bostock of Your Day Video Production. Hiring someone to capture your wedding memories strictly on price is never a good idea. “The old ‘You get what you pay for’ applies here,” says Bostock.

PHOTOGRAPHY + VIDEO

It’s important to find pros who specialize in weddings and have beautiful portfolios. Wedding photographers and videographers have to be more than fine artists though. They have to manage wedding logistics and know the traditions and order of events. With experience comes knowledge. Quality wedding pros know which shots are important and how to capture them. Find out how long your prospects have been capturing weddings and if your wedding involves cultural customs, be sure to make them aware of these in advance.

shows work in that style.

RESEARCH + BOOK YOUR WEDDING AND VIDEO PHOTOGRAPHY EARLY. The best pros fill their calendars a year or more in advance, so start looking early.

As you interview your potential candidates, carefully look at their portfolio. If you make an emotional connection and you like their energy, then you have probably found “the one.” If you find yourself thinking, “I really wish they did more (or less) of this or that,” or “gosh, they’re pushy” then it may be best to move on.

Browse through Instagram, blogs and websites to get a feel for the type of photography and video that you like. Once you have a feel for your style preference, it is important you book a photographer and videographer whose portfolio

Identify three to five pros whose work appeals to you and make appointments to meet them in person (or in a video chat) before you book. Here’s why…. PERSONALITY MATTERS. Your photographer’s interpersonal skills are as important as their technical knowledge and years of experience.

GET IT IN WRITING. You should expect your wedding pros to provide detailed information. Most have contracts that can be sent to you for review. Read them and make sure you understand what you’re signing.

nowweddingsmagazine.com | NOW | 127

Your contract should include information about retainers, cancellations, refunds and turnaround time. Ask lots of questions about what is included and what extra costs there might be. There are no wrong answers, but you should be aware of what you’re getting before you sign any contracts. DON’T DELAY YOUR DECISION. After interviewing the pros on your list, it is important to secure your favorite with a retainer. Don’t expect anyone to hold a date without a retainer and remember if you wait too long to make your decision, you could lose your first choice. Always get a contract and sign and return this with your retainer payment. This contract should include the pricing and what is included with your package. Detailed documentation will avoid future frustration! MANAGE YOUR EXPECTATIONS. Coverage times Ask how much is required to properly document your day and resist the urge to underestimate how long tasks will take so you can cut down coverage time. This never goes well. Venue Restrictions Be sure you understand your venue’s photography and video restrictions. Many churches and synagogues do not allow flash

photography and many do not permit movement during the ceremony. A few don’t allow photography or video at all! Know what to expect. Obvious” Questions A typical assumption is that the person you meet with is the one who will be capturing your wedding. Never make assumptions! “Beware, there are some nationally owned companies that advertise in local markets and then hire videographers to do the wedding,” says Bostock. The same can be said for photography. Always ask who will be showing up on your wedding day. And while you’re at it, ask about backup plans. Obviously, no one ever plans to become sick or get in an accident, but a pro should have a backup plan in the event that they can’t make it to your wedding. Ask what that backup plan is. There IS a correct answer here and it’s not “We’ll figure it out if we have to.” Read THAT twice. Every company has a different process for post production and editing. Editing your wedding photos and video is an art and the artists need time to complete their process. Some may have sneak peeks ready for you within a week of your wedding, while others may require several months before you see a single frame. Know what to expect and try not to become impatient.

Of course, you should expect to receive your finished product when promised or at least receive communication if there have been unexpected delays like family emergencies. NEGATIVE TALK Always ask if you receive the digital negatives from your photos. Some photographers include this in your package, others offer them at an additional cost and some do not offer them at all. Know your photographer’s policy. If you will receive digital files, ask your photographer where they recommend having them printed – not all photo printing companies are created equal. BALANCING ACT Most wedding pros require that your balance be paid in full prior to the wedding, usually several weeks before. This is completely normal and should be expected. If the thought of paying upfront before receiving anything makes you nervous, ask for past client references to call. If you’re nervous about having someone running off with your money, think twice about hiring that company. You should never hire someone you don’t trust. Knowing what to expect can relieve a world of stress. Hire a seasoned professional whose work you love and enjoy your wedding day!

Saying “I Do” to Financial Harmony CONGRATULATIONS! You’ve found the love of your life, and now you’re planning your happily ever after. But amidst the wedding venue tours and cake tastings, there’s another crucial aspect to consider: your financial future as a couple. While money conversations may not be as romantic as discussing centerpieces, open and honest communication about finances is essential for a strong marriage. Here’s how to approach this topic with your partner and create a financial plan that supports your shared goals.

132 | NOW | nowweddingsmagazine.com

“ Your wedding lasts one day, your marriage lasts a lifetime. Couples spend so much time planning one day that they neglect to spend any time planning for their future. ”

DIVIDE AND CONQUER (OR COLLABORATE!) Money management is a team sport. Take some time to discuss each other’s financial strengths and weaknesses. Are you a budgeting whiz? Does your partner have a knack for long-term investing? As financial expert Xavier Angel CFP®, ChFC®, CLTC®, along with his co-host Erik Garcia, CFP®, ChFC®, BFA™, advises on the podcast “Stuff About Money,” once you understand each other’s financial personalities, you can assign tasks accordingly. Shared decision-making is also crucial, even if one partner takes

the lead on managing day-to-day finances. Talking through big purchases and investment strategies together ensures you’re “rowing in the same direction” with your money. This open communication helps avoid surprises and fosters a sense of shared responsibility for your financial future. MERGING MONEY MATTERS: DECIDING ON ACCOUNTS There’s no single path to financial bliss as a couple. Some couples thrive with completely joint accounts, while others prefer a hybrid approach. The key is to have open communication about your

nowweddingsmagazine.com | NOW | 133

spending habits and financial goals before deciding. n J oint Accounts: Combining everything can simplify bill paying and budgeting, fostering a sense of shared responsibility. This approach works well for couples with similar spending habits and financial goals. nS eparate Accounts: Keeping separate accounts can provide some financial independence and privacy, especially if there’s a significant difference in income or spending styles. nH ybrid Approach: Many couples find a middle ground by combining most of their income into joint accounts for shared expenses while maintaining separate accounts for personal spending or surprise gifts. No matter which approach you choose, remember – communication is key! Discuss your preferences openly and honestly to find the system that works best for your unique financial partnership. Once you’ve untangled your financial webs, work together to create a budget. Discuss your income, fixed expenses (rent, utilities), variable expenses (groceries, entertainment), and shortand long-term goals (dream vacation, house down payment). There are many budgeting apps and tools available to help you navigate this process. For an extra layer of organization, head over to Plan Wisely Wealth Advisors and download their free “Financial Considerations When Getting Married Checklist.” This list will guide you through essential conversations and help you map out your financial future together. DEBT DO-DOWN: TACKLING OBLIGATIONS TOGETHER Debt can be a heavy weight to carry, both literally and figuratively. Before you tie the knot, be transparent with your partner about any existing debt, including student loans, car payments, or credit card balances. Debt can cause financial strain and lead to arguments down the line. Discussing it openly allows you to create a plan to tackle it together, fostering a sense of unity and shared purpose. Consider how debt will affect your overall financial picture and how you’ll manage it as a couple. Will you combine incomes and debts? Will you create a budget that allocates funds toward debt repayment? Having a clear strategy will help you approach your financial future with confidence. Develop a plan to tackle it together, whether it’s prioritizing highinterest credit card debt or creating a debt snowball to eliminate smaller debts first. FINDING YOUR COMFORT ZONE: DISCUSSING RISK TOLERANCE Plan-Wisely financial experts recommend couples address their risk tolerance before marriage. Couples don’t always see eye-toeye on risk. One partner might be a thrill-seeker when it comes to investments, while the other prefers a more cautious approach. 134 | NOW | nowweddingsmagazine.com

Before you walk down the aisle, have an honest conversation about your risk tolerance. Discussing your financial goals and how comfortable you are with potential losses will help you develop an investment strategy that works for both of you. Finding a middle ground ensures you’re aligned on how you’ll grow your wealth together, avoiding emotional decisions during market fluctuations. BUILDING YOUR DREAMS TOGETHER Every couple has unique dreams, from that picture-perfect honeymoon in Bali to starting a family or saving for a dream home. Talking openly about your financial goals – both short-term and long-term – is crucial for financial planning as a couple. n Short-Term Goals: Discuss your goals for the next few years. Are you planning a big trip or saving for a down payment on a car? Sharing these aspirations allows you to create a budget and track your progress together. n Long-Term Goals: Don’t forget the big picture! Do you dream of early retirement, financial independence, or starting a business together? Having a clear understanding of your long-term goals will help you make informed financial decisions today, like how much to save for retirement or how much risk you’re comfortable taking with investments. GETTING EXPERT HELP: CONSIDERING A FINANCIAL PLANNER Financial planning can feel overwhelming, especially as you navigate the complexities of combining finances. Consider consulting with a Certified Financial Planner (CFP®) professional. CFPs are fiduciaries, meaning they are legally obligated to act in your best interests. They can help you: n Develop a personalized financial plan: A CFP® will consider your income, risk tolerance, and goals to create a roadmap for your financial future. n Make smart investment decisions: They can recommend investment strategies aligned with your risk tolerance and longterm goals. n Navigate complex financial products: CFPs can explain complex financial products like IRAs, annuities, and life insurance, helping you choose the ones that suit your needs. Remember, financial planning as a couple is an ongoing conversation, not a one-time event. Schedule regular check-ins to discuss your progress, adjust your plans as needed, and celebrate your financial milestones together. By working together openly and honestly, you can build a secure and prosperous future, ensuring your “I do” extends to financial harmony as well. Want to delve deeper?
