Perspective

Conceptually, the visitor center serves to return part of the hilltop to the hill, which was bulldozed and flattened for previous structures. It also becomes a threshhold, at first denying the view across the valley, then guiding the visitor and framing it for them.

TIME TRAVEL ORIENTATION DEVICE A place for time travelers. Built by intertemporal scholars and explorers, the the building serves as an anchor point, a home base which the time travelers can find, no matter WHEN they find themselves to be. It houses resources for blending in with the culture and dress of whatever era they are visiting and offices for studying the people and customs there.

Man and prehistoric beast living along side each other. A mixed use project joining the programs of an aquarium with those of a residential community. The combination creates opportunities for unusual adjacencies between man and animal, each in their respective homes, and yet each being the subject of observation by the other.

CONTRAPTIONIZED ENVIRONMENT 0 1

A project done in collaboration with a Chicago theater troupe. My team was tasked with designing an intervention for Redmoon Theater’s Pilsen warehouse which would increase its functionality as an indoor performance venue for the troupe as well as expand its usefulness as a storage and community outreach space.

CONTRAPTIONIZED ENVIRONMENT

Extended section

Section

The proposal involves the installation of a secondary space frame structure within the warehouse and the suspension of 24 removable platforms from it. These platforms are made operable by a motorized winches, allowing for a spatially dynamic and functionally enhanced headquarters for the troupe.

SUPERFURNITURE Above and opposite: pages from comic I am writing and drawing as part of my thesis work this year. The comic functions as documentation of the year, as well as a platform for discussing ideas, and even self critique. The primary topic is superfurniture, in this case, a superfurniture being designed and built by myself as a means to examine the ways in which we personalize our workspaces.

The grid was used to determine the depth of the superfurniture.

48”

48” is about the depth of the desk + a chair with someone in it.

The last move in plan is a nod to the 1st years. To facilitate the easy entrance for both superfurniture occupant and 1st years, the lobby side corner nearest them is pushed back, leaving more open space and a welcoming passage to their desk area.

Another important consideration is the width of the adjacent desk. To make the superfurniture wider would block impede traffic on either side, while narrower would make occupying the structure too complicated.

There are no climate concerns when building indoors, but nonpragmatic things can generate form.

Connotations, memory, associations.

is a default, it springs into the mind when we think of a house. For many people, even the word-concept of “home” conjures up images of something fitting this shape. Superfurniture as home away from home away from home. The shape reminds us of something vernacular, something designed by people who aren’t designers. Which is perfect. An architecture studio vernacular?

The superfurniture is an act of hyperbolic personalization (it replaces my studio desk at school) while also existing as an unfamiliar environment which can itself act as a canvas for personalization.

SUPERFURNITURE

Geometrically, the most obvious influence on massing is the floor grid.

That thing is making me nervous.

SUPERFURNITURE So what’s up with that... thing?

Well, you see...

our hopeful protagonist launches into a lengthy and poorly worded explination of the fact that he us using time lapse photography to study the movements of his body and those of the objects on his desk to better inform the design of his superfurniture.

SUPERFURNITURE above: Photos of assembly process and completed framework. As this semester progresses, my superfurniture will evolve as I experiment with different cladding materials and the addition of elements such as interior lighting and additional storage.

RICHMOND BRIDGE PARK A stitch to connect the city of Richmond, a place to enjoy it’s past and it’s present. The Bridge Park Foundation contacted SAB to develop a study of options for an elevated park that would cross the James River using the existing piers from previous rail road bridges.

RICHMOND BRIDGE PARK The scope of the project has slowly expanded and morphed, transforming into an extended promenade which takes over two lanes of the under-used Manchester to the south and extends all the way to the now derelict Kanawha Plaza. My duties with SAB included drafting and modeling (physical and digital), and development of concepts for the bridge and for Kanawha Plaza and graphics for presentation.

LAKE HOUSE Site plans

A repository for memories. A driving idea behind the project is the delineation of the “man-made” and the “natural” landscape, which is accomplished by means of a continuous cor-ten steel wall that cascades from the top of the property down to the yard below the house. This was partially influenced by an early Richard Serra sculpture called “Shift.”

North elevations

East elevations My primary tasks on this project were drawing and modeling a new design for the topography of the site, as well as updating and refining the design of the boathouse on the property.

“I think, you know, architecture should not just be something that follows up on events but be a leader of events “... by implementing an architectural action, you actually are making a transformation in the social fabric and in the political fabric. Architecture becomes an instigator. -Lebbeus Woods
