El municipio de Almolonga, en el departamento de Quetzaltenango, es conocido por su gran producción agrícola para exportar, entre otros factores, por sus inigualables cosechas.
La cabecera municipal de Almolonga se localiza a 6 km de la cabecera departamental de Quetzaltenango, y a 204 km de la ciudad de Guatemala. El lugar es conocido como “donde brota agua” y es que, justamente, sus manantiales y aguas subterráneas son las que hacen tan fértil su tierra y la hacen inmune a las sequías que azotan a la región.
El Jardín de las Américas
En Almolonga se realizan ocho cosechas anuales, se produce especialmente repollo, coliflor, lechuga, zanahoria, remolacha, papa, rábano, acelga y brócoli. El lugar ha llamado la atención de turistas y medios internacionales, ya que sus verduras son de gran tamaño, incluso, ha sido nombrado como “El Jardín de las Américas“, ya que toda su producción se exporta.

Recuperación económica
Antes de la pandemia, Almolonga exportaba más de 20 mil quintales; sin embargo, a principios de 2021, su exportación bajó 45%. Además, las acciones del presidente Alejandro Giammattei han ayudado a amortiguar los efectos y, durante este año, casi se han recuperado al cien por ciento.
