Guatemala continues to strengthen its diplomatic relations. In this edition, we share that the IX Summit of Heads of State and Government of the Association of Caribbean States (ACS) recently took place here in Guatemala and the Ordinary Meeting of the ACS Ministerial Council.

During the meeting, the Heads of State and Government addressed institutional issues relevant to improving the region, highlighting the Declaration of Antigua, which contains 43 agreements, ranging from a green agenda and investment strategies up to migration.

El presidente de la República, Alejandro Giammattei, junto al Consejo Nacional de Desarrollo Urbano y Rural (Conadur) priorizaron 2347 proyectos de educación, salud, infraestructura y agua, con una inversión de Q3376 millones.

The President of the Republic, Alejandro Giammattei, and the National Council for Urban and Rural Development (Conadur, acronym in Spanish) prioritized 2,347 projects between education, health, infrastructure, and water, with an investment of Q3,376 million.

The President stated, “With the greatest enthusiasm and energy, we are proposing strategies to transform, for the better, the management and processes within the System of Development Councils and work as a team in constructing a better country.”

Guatemala participó en el Arabian Travel Market, donde se dio a conocer al país como un nuevo mercado de viajeros y como destino turístico, informó el Instituto Guatemalteco de Turismo (Inguat).

Café y folclore

En el estand se ofreció información sobre las riquezas culturales y naturales. Además, se realizaron actividades como la degustación de café por Guatemalan Coffees con la presencia del barista y campeón mundial Raúl Rodas, así como la presentación del Ballet FolklóricodelInguat.

Arabian Travel Market es el evento de viajes y turismo internacional líder en el mercado que desbloquea el potencial comercial dentro del Medio Oriente para los profesionales de turismo receptivo y emisor. Contó con la participación de 52 países, 300 expositores y más de 7 mil visitantes profesionales.

To continue strengthening ties between the two countries, the Governments of Guatemala and France held the III Meeting of the Mechanism for Political Consultations between Guatemala and France.

Los Gobiernos de Guatemala y Francia celebraron la III Reunión del Mecanismo de Consultas Políticas, a fin de continuar estrechando los vínculos entre ambos países.

En el encuentro, la directora general de Relaciones Internacionales Bilaterales del Minex, Lynsay Hernández, presidió la actividad junto con el director adjunto para las Américas y el Caribe del Ministerio de Europa y Asuntos Exteriores de Francia, Philippe Létrilliart.

Abordaron temas bilaterales como el análisis de la situación de Guatemala-Francia; la protección del medioambiente, cambio climático, seguridad, agenda azul, candidaturas y el intercambio mutuo de candidaturas ante organismos internacionales, entre otros temas.

Los funcionarios coincidieron en el respaldo político-diplomático a Ucrania ante la invasión injustificada de Rusia, y consideraron los efectos negativos en la seguridad alimentaria y energética, así como en los índices de la inflación en la mayoría de países.

The officials agreed on the politicaldiplomatic support to Ukraine in the face of Russia’s unjustified invasion. They considered the adverse effects on food and energy security and the inflation rates in most countries.

Cacao guatemalteco listo para competir

Guatemalan Cocoa ready to compete

El cacao guatemalteco es altamente demandado en la chocolatería gurmé, debido a su aroma y sabor únicos. Recientemente, se dio a conocer que cinco muestras de dicho grano provenientes de Izabal, Alta Verapaz, Suchitepéquez y Quiché representarán a Guatemala en el Cacao of Excellence Awards 2023, que se celebrará en París, Francia, en octubre próximo.

Degustación

De acuerdo con el comité organizador, la participación contribuye al posicionamiento de la oferta exportable en nichos especializados. Cabe resaltar que durante 2022 se exportaron 380.5 toneladas métricas del citado fruto, por un valor de US $1.2 millones, lo que representa un incremento del 35 por ciento respecto a 2021.

Naciones como Estados Unidos, Italia, Países Bajos, Alemania, Francia, Japón, Corea del Sur y/o Canadá ya degustan cacao guatemalteco. Esperamos que su país pronto se sume a nuestras exportaciones.

Due to its unique aroma and flavor, Guatemalan cocoa has a high demand in the gourmet chocolate industry. It was recently announced that five samples of this bean from Izabal, Alta Verapaz, Suchitepéquez, and Quiché will represent Guatemala at the Cacao of ExcellenceAwards2023, to be held in Paris, France, next October.

Tasting

According to the organizing committee, participation in the event will contribute to positioning the exportable supply in specialized niches. In 2022, cocoa exports reached 380.5 metric tons of cocoa for US $1.2 million, representing a 35 percent increase in value compared to 2021.

The United States, Italy, the Netherlands, Germany, France, Japan, South Korea, and Canada are some countries that already taste our cocoa. We hope that your country will soon join our exports.

Avances tangibles

“Estamos comprometidos con fortalecer y desarrollar las capacidades colectivas para lograr la prosperidad de todos”, afirmó el presidente de la República, Alejandro Giammattei, tras la conclusión de la IX Cumbre de Jefes de Estado y de Gobierno de la Asociación de Estados del Caribe (AEC).

“Presenciamos el particular valor que tiene la cooperación y amistad entre nuestras naciones. Esta cita nos dejó grandes satisfacciones y el gusto de ser testigos de que juntos podemos construir un mejor futuro para el desarrollo del Gran Caribe”, agregó el gobernante, quien participó en el cierre del cónclave realizado en La Antigua Guatemala.

Resaltó que durante el evento se lograron avances tangibles, los cuales quedaron plasmados en la Declaración de Antigua, que contiene 43 acuerdos.

El canciller guatemalteco informó que el documento aborda la siguiente temática: aumentar la cooperación multinacional, fortalecer la agenda verde y azul regional, reactivar la economía a través de la atracción de inversiones y la creación de estrategias respecto de la migración.

Entre los avances, resalta el primer catálogo de cooperación sur de los miembros de la AEC. “Incluye programas de becas y de cooperación, entre otros”, expresó el ministro de Exteriores.

This meeting leaves us with great satisfaction and the pleasure of witnessing that together we can build a better future for the development of the Greater Caribbean.”

Visible progress

He highlighted that visible progress was made during the event, reflected in the Declaration of Antigua, which contains 43 agreements.

The Guatemalan Foreign Minister informed that the document addresses the following issues: increase multinational cooperation, strengthen the regional green and blue agenda, reactivate the economy through the attraction of investments, and the creation of strategies regarding migration.

The first ACS members’ Southern cooperation catalog stands out among the advances made.

“It includes scholarship and cooperation programs, among others,” said the Minister of Foreign Affairs.

Ceremonia maya a Saq’Q’ij

Los mayas eran astrónomos por excelencia, tenían conocimientos exactos de los períodos de la Luna y el Sol.

Uno de los grandes fenómenos que lograron descubrir es el solsticio de verano, conocido como Saq’Q’ij’ que en k’iche’ significa: “Días claros, blancos, resplandecientes y luminosos”, que tiene lugar cada 21 de junio.

Edificadores

Su afición los llevó a crear observatorios del paso cenital del Sol, así como varios templos para observar este fenómeno.

Uno de ellos es la Plaza del Grupo E, de Uaxactún, en Petén, que se considera como el primer observatorio de la civilización Maya. Está integrada por tres santuarios: en el Templo E-1 se puede observar el solsticio; en la Estela 19, la salida del Sol del 21 de septiembre y en el Templo E-2, el equinoccio del 21 de diciembre.

Agradecidos

En esa misma fecha se celebra la ceremonia maya, en la cual se agradece al Dios Creador y Formador por el inicio de la siembra, recolección de la cosecha, así como para pedir abundancia, fertilidad, entre otras.

Para el Ministerio de Cultura y Deportes, las ceremonias mayas son una tradición milenaria que deben ser respetadas y dadas a conocer. ¡Guatemala le espera!

The Mayan Ceremony to Saq’Q’ij

The Maya had exact knowledge of the Moon and Sun periods and were astronomers par excellence.

Known as Saq’Q’ij, which in K’iche’ means “clear, white, resplendent and luminous

days,” the summer solstice was one of the extraordinary phenomena they managed to discover, which takes place every June 21 st.

Builders

Their passion led them to create observatories of the zenithal passage of the Sun and several temples to observe this phenomenon.

One of these temples can be found in Uaxactún, in the department of Petén: “The Plaza” in Group E is considered the first observatory of the Maya civilization. It has three sanctuaries: Temple E-1 to observe the solstice, Stela 19 to see the sunrise of September 21, and Temple E-2 to celebrate the equinox of December 21.

A Maya ceremony takes place on the same date to thank the “creator and shaper” god for the beginning of the sowing and harvesting and to ask for abundance and fertility, among other things.

Una visita relajante en Las Fuentes Georginas

Las Fuentes Georginas se encuentran a 2500 metros sobre el nivel del mar, en las faldas del volcán Zunil, Quetzaltenango.

Un destino turístico donde entrará en contacto con la naturaleza y podrá descubrir el misticismo que lo envuelve.

Curativo

A este atractivo vacacional los visitantes le atribuyen poderes medicinales, pues, según las leyendas del lugar, sus aguas son capaces de curar enfermedades.

Las Fuentes Georginas comprenden siete piscinas de aguas termales, y sus poderes curativos se atribuyen a que pueden llegar hasta los 30º y

que contrastan con el clima frío del lugar. Sus aguas azufradas provienen del volcán Zunil, que cientos de visitantes aprovechan para darse un baño relajante.

La Cueva

Un sitio privilegiado por los mayas, donde usted podrá observar a sacerdotes mayas celebrar ceremonias y oraciones para pedir por el bien de la comunidad.

Además, el lugar se ubica dentro de un bosque húmedo bajo subtropical envuelto entre las nubes. Cuenta con varios senderos para que pueda disfrutar de la naturaleza y observar las diferentes especies, así como un hostal para que pueda hospedarse.

Las Fuentes Georginas is located on the slopes of the Zunil volcano in the department of Quetzaltenango, 2500 meters above sea level.

Un traductor de idiomas mayas a su alcance

Roberto Ben Soch, un desarrollador tecnológico guatemalteco originario de Sololá, deseaba dar a conocer el idioma kaqchikel; enfocado en ello, creó la aplicación Traductor de Idiomas Mayas, que hoy está al alcance de un clic.

Sus habilidades y sus ganas de dar a conocer más expresiones lingüísticas hicieron que pronto se sumaran más idiomas mayas como: quiché, mam, xinca, garífuna, q’ueqchi’, tz’utujil, popti’, pocomam, entre otros. “Llegue a un punto donde la comunidad lingüística popti’ me contactó y empezamos a agregarla al sistema”, comentó Ben Soch en entrevista.

Ganamos y crecemos juntos

Sin embargo, no fueron los únicos que lo contactaron, puesto que Huawei, al notar el crecimiento de la aplicación, lo apoyó con el HuaweiSparkProgram. “Es un proyecto que va a conectar a muchas personas y eso nos enriquece como sociedad”, expuso la marca.

El creador dijo que enfrentó varios retos. El mayor fue “crear el algoritmo que integra millones de traducciones”; añadió que el siguiente paso es “agregar mejores funcionalidades para llegar a más personas”.

A translator of Mayan languages at your fingertips

The Guatemalan technology developer Roberto Ben Soch, from the Department of Sololá, wanted to make the Kaqchikel language known; focused on this goal, he created the Maya Language Translator application, which is now just a click away.

In an interview, Ben Soch commented: “I reached a point where the Popti’ Linguistic Community contacted me, and we started adding it to the system,” his skills and the desire to make more linguistic expressions known soon led to the addition of more Mayan languages such as Quiché, Mam, Xinca, Garífuna, Q’ueqchi’, Tz’utujil, Popti’, Pocomam, among others.
