on hold / hold on // IN WRITING collection
Here, on hold / hold on loosely bundles together, each line a separate shade. This gradient selection can run, as shown, in just a few lines, ideal as the lower 18 of a curtain panel or room divider. The same pattern can continue unabated for the length of yardage you require. This pattern works well on the cream hemp canvas shown, on naturally dark hemp canvas, and on our light and medium weigth hemp linens.
off hand / hand off // IN WRITING collection
On these pillowcases, off hand / hand off laps and overlaps, growing denser toward the bottom. Available in any dye color, we’ve found the IN WRITING collection is calmest when printed with colors you might find in a ball point pen. Here, we used navy on one side and brilliant lake blue on the other. This arrangement of shifting density may occur on an area the size of a pillowcase or across the expanse of three or four yards of cloth.

The printing blocks set for on hold / hold on includes outlines. Here, we use them “between the lines, and upside down (or rightside up, depending).
RIGHT WINTER colorway // navy on linen and navy and turquoise on linen BELOW DAWN colorway // smoke and melon on linen
hold on / on hold with hand off / off hand // IN WRITING collection
Arranged as a composition on three panels. Shown hung against a wall, this piece can also serve as a room divider. On cream hemp canvas, lined with a lighter linen. We printed the lining on both sides of the cloth with a mix of STAND WITH / WITH STAND and STAY STILL / STILL STAY. Double sided printing gives a surprising, rich effect, with the “underside” filtering through (the underside is just the side you’re not looking at). See page 13 for a closer look.
STAND WITH / WITH STAND //
IN WRITING collection
For this interation, we printed on both sides of the linen, intentionally working with the dye bleeding through the medium weight (5.5oz) linen. The word reversal adds to the visual richness and, subtly, to the words’ emotional resonance. Non-repeating. Readily customizable to coordinate layout with other patterns and architectural elements. Can run horizontally, vertically, or at an angle (above, 45°) to selvage.

IN WRITING. A linguistic delight, some 2-word English phrases have different meanings when the words reverse order, which for us is ideal for block printing. IN WRITING collection features patterns that are simultaneously verbal and visual, graphically and emotionally rich. With them, we create myriad variations, small and large, on the patterns we print in our Northern California shop.
CUSTOM OPTIONS.
We design yardage on the cloth itself, at full scale, and we run small-batch print

We print on all natural fiber fabrics, most typically on 58-60” wide hemp linen,
flax linen, and silk. We may be able to work with your substrate; testing is part of our service. Our colors are lightfast and the fabrics are fully washable. We recommend cold water and line drying. As with all textiles, ours will last longest if kept out of direct sun exposure and washed infrequently. Should your pieces fade from sun or repeated washing, we are happy to re-print any of our cloth—if not upholstered—a service block-printing makes possible. Drips and irregularities are marks of the block-printing process, signs of the warm-hearted humans who put the patterns directly onto cloth.
