Market-defyingly strong at Doncaster
That’s the best way to describe the Goffs Doncaster Premier Yearling Sale of 2023.
In a year when many other auctions failed to match the highs of 2022 (with Goffs Orby being the notable exception), it held firm. More money was spent than 12 months earlier – £16,232,000 versus £15,952,500 – resulting in the average increasing by 2% to £45,854. No mean feat considering the state of trade at other later competitor sales.
What’s more, the number of six-figure lots rose from 23 to 28, and they were bought by a diverse cross-section of the industry.
Perhaps it should be no surprise that the Premier Yearling Sale remained rock solid, though. After all, it offers a trademark product in the ‘Donny Rocket’, a sharp and speedy
horse with class to boot, as numerous Group 1 winners that have come from its ranks. Furthermore, the fixture is the first domestic yearling sale in the calendar, so buyers have plenty of money to spend. And because there is such a convivial atmosphere at the auction, they usually loosen the purse strings.
Not forgetting, of course, one of the biggest motivations to buy at the Premier Yearling Sale, as mentioned by many of last year’s purchasers: the new Harry’s Half Million, formerly the Premier Yearling Stakes, with a prize fund boosted to £500,000.
We look forward to another solid sale in 2024 as buyers and sellers know the consistent strength of the sale.

£500,000 Harry’s Half Million
New for 2024, the long-standing Premier
Yearling Stakes will be rebranded as Harry’s Half Million and its prize money increased to half a million pounds.
The race has been a huge success for our Premier Sale since its launch over 25 years ago. When it was introduced, it was Europe’s richest 2YO race and it has been won by some outstanding horses such as Acclamation, Dark Angel, Tasleet and Wootton Bassett to name just a few, and increasing the prize fund to £500,000 demonstrates our commitment to this time-honoured race.
Next year’s race will be held at York Racecourse, Ebor Festival 2025. All yearlings are eligible to be entered following their sale.
“I’m especially keen on trying to win the Harry’s Half Million next year. It’s a great incentive and because of that vendors have upped their game by bringing nicer horses than ever.”
ANTHONY BROMLEY
