Orby is turning heads for all the right reasons.

The vibrancy of the middle to top end of Orby Book 1 bucked the trends seen at other major yearling sales in 2023, rewarding vendors with a rise in six figure, two hundred and fifty thousand, half million and seven figure lots. The average advanced again and the median was the second highest on record. The clearance rate stood strong at 87% while turnover grew from the record trade of twelve months earlier.

Group 1 winners in the US, Hong Kong, France, UK, and Ireland last season illustrate the quality that draws buyers to Orby. World class catalogues command global attention, and the unrivalled diversity of the Orby buyer bench at the top level was evidenced by the fact that the ten highest priced yearlings were bought by nine individual buyers in 2023. We are also turning the heads of increasing numbers of US buyers who made an enormous contribution purchasing yearlings from no less than 47 different vendors. Godolphin, who have enjoyed Group 1 success from recent Orby purchases, made a welcome return to the leading buyer ranks when purchasing six yearlings from six individual vendors including two of the five top lots.

One Look’s wonderful win in the Goffs Million at the Curragh got Orby week off to a storming start, and the buzz spilled over into the sale as the expansion into the Two Million Series captured the imagination of a vast number of buyers. The appeal of the richest sales race series in Europe underpinned strong demand from domestic and UK buyers across Orby Books 1 and 2, while several buyers from further afield chose to keep horses in training Ireland to take their chance at the ¤2,000,000 prize fund.

All yearlings offered at Orby Books 1 and 2 in 2024 will be eligible for the Goffs Two Million Series in 2025 and we anticipate even more interest from buyers at this year’s sale as the prize fund is shared out across the ¤50,000 two-year-old maiden bonuses from the start of the season, culminating in not one but two races, the Goffs Million over 7 furlongs and the 6 furlong Goffs 500, with a combined guaranteed minimum prize fund of ¤1.5 million to be won on the eve of Orby 2024.

The Irish National Yearling Sales will begin with Orby Book 1 which showcases the best Irish yearlings over two days followed by two days of high-quality commercial yearlings at Orby Book 2. Orby Book 2 consistently delivers many of the highest priced yearlings in Ireland outside Book 1 and attracts a broad base of agents and trainers.

That said we acknowledge the need for greater focus on attracting buyers at all levels and Goffs, together with Irish Thoroughbred Marketing, will redouble our efforts in the promotion of Book 2 to deliver maximum buyer participation from across Europe as well as incentives for buyers who are active at both Book 1 and Book 2.

Our proactive Orby buyer recruitment strategy is already underway, and our team are travelling the globe this year to showcase your yearlings to the broadest international buying bench. Once those buyers arrive in Ireland, we will ensure that the electric atmosphere of the Orby Sale is matched outside the ring by the warmest welcome and unique hospitality that can only be found in Ireland.
