Reference for Joanne Hui Lee Ling To whom it may concern, Joanne Hui Lee Ling was a student in the 2019 UNSW Masters of Architecture Housing Studio which I tutored. She was a very conscientious student and applied herself with great discipline throughout the 2 terms, which she completed with a HD. Joanne’s prefabricated affordable housing model demonstrated a genuine ambition to explore alternative housing strategies which addressed the social, economic, design and construction challenges the housing sector currently faces. The outcome of her project was informed by critical research, a clear design brief, innovative fabrication techniques, craft in design detailing and some youthful optimism for our housing future. I highly commend Joanne for her commitment, hard work and growth through the studio. I wish her all the best with her future employment endeavours. Yours sincerely

06 L FLEXI REDFERN, NEW SOUTH WALES SITE AREA: 10,000 SQM
Types of modular construction
‘How can modular construction provide flexible and affordable housing strategies to cater for the changing needs of home owners?’ Deriving from the research question, this project explores how prefabricated housing can tackle the current housing stress problems by targeting on young single professionals and low-income families in Sydney. Given the site at Redfern, 300 prefab modules are designed with a 30sqm typical studio unit. A sliding drawing concept using the scaffolding technique is then introduced for the construction assembly of modules; reminiscing the mass production during Industrial Revolution era. This idea also provides multiple flexible floor layout strategies with the addition of new modules - single extension, horizontal expansion and vertical expansion; in which Flexi can continuously evolve in the future.
Individual work M. Arch Year 2 Graduation Studio, Autumn + Winter 2019 Instructed by Chi Melhem + Sandra Furtado AutoCAD, SketchUp, V-ray, Rhino, Lumion, Adobe Creative Suites *** Invited to represent Housing Studio cohort to present in the MAD Architects Masterclass Presentation with the visiting Chinese Architect, Dang Qun.
Given the site that faces the opposite public Redfern Oval, it draws a public connection into the site via the main Elizabeth Street, making the ground floor to function as cafes and retail outlets. The existing public PCYC Community Centre is maintained at the south location as two bus stops located outside its entrance act as a public drop-off spot. A crane is placed in the centre of private community garden to ease the convenience of replacing module units from the loading zone at north-facing Kettle Street. Besides, it also represents an identity of the site, reminiscing the industrialisation era in Redfern.

Program massing section sketch
This urban studio project aims to deliver a new contemporary art space called ArtHeart in the centre of Parramatta CBD interpreting the concept of an abstract design into the site through architecture. The existing site is functioned as car park constructed in 1981 occupying 575 car parking spaces, with 2 entrances facing the northern Phillip Street and eastern Horwood Place. Commisioned by the Parramatta Artists Studios (PAS) and Information Cultural Exchange (ICE), Parrabstract has retained 350 car parks and continued to develop and play an important role to home their needs; evolving a community of creative artists to interact with the public domain. In program massing development, lighting and acoustic qualities are taken into account to divide the public and private programs to create different spatial experience for the public users in the 1000sqm exhibition space, as well as for the working artists in the 30 proposed artist studio rooms.

Primary structures are constructed of double glulam with treated Tasmanian Oak, whereas the secondary structures are constructed of Spotted Gum hardwood. It has an internal void of 8m to allow maximum space for boat storage, circulation and maintenance. Load calculations are tested using the Multiframe software to determine the structural stability of the building.

12 M HILLHAUS ADELAIDE, SOUTH AUSTRALIA SITE AREA: 6800 SQM
Massing model A typical apartment is all about extrusion of shape or stacking above one block to another; Hillhaus acts the same, but in different style. The stacking of every small house units develop a sense of growing like the poker cards tower, forming different approach to a new typical apartment design. Each housing unit, consisting of 3 stories, is divided into 2 apartment units by the shear wall which channels down the load to the ground; its pitch roof rafters function as roof trusses. Most single apartment units, in the huge house (extrusion model) have a vantage view to the ground level of bathhouse, developing the sensation of warmth and relaxation through the shaft of voids. The juxtaposition of exterior artificial Danpalon cladding and interior natural plywood finish creates a connection between the public and private space in one community and design.

Form exploration through origami folding
Built outside the Engineering and Maths Science Building, Trigonomelight functions as a light pavilion to showcase engineering students’ research projects, with multiple methods of seeking and exploring the interplay of light and shadows through physics and mechanics. According to an Arabic scientist Alhazen, he discovered that light reflects on hard and soft surfaces in various angles in which corresponds to the angles of a triangle. Different types of triangles consist different angles in which different materials produce different lighting qualities in different rooms of light pavilion. Heavyweight and lightweight materials perform in reflective, diffusive and refractive ways; a pond is built to further enhance the ambient by creating dynamic movement of ripple patterns in the space. Besides, artificial lighting like LED and fluorescent tubes are installed to glow at night so as reflecting on the knowledge of researching in science and technology; serving as the University’s motto (SEEK LIGHT).

16 M CRESCENDO NORTH TERRACE, ADELAIDE SITE AREA: 1320 SQM
Grasshopper fenestration facade
Given the site adjacent to University of Adelaide North Terrace Campus, The School of Architecture and Built Environment proposes for a new construction for architecture building to accommodate the increasing
amount of staffs and students. Crescendo is named after a faced-paced experience produced from the fast kinetic movement played by the rising melody and quickening tempo, in which most architecture students experienced, either rushing an assignment or celebration for post-critic presentation. From observation of motion to translation of sketches and three-dimensional object, a complex form is then generated to explore the spatial qualities in the school. Different programs are introduced and organized in consideration of different users and functionalities. A waffle rib structure is then constructed from laser cutting for structural system. Rhinoceros Grasshopper plug-in is used to design pixelated fenestrations on the facade; lighting qualities are explored in different rooms to welcome various atmosphere and experience throughout the architecture building.

This elective course introduces creative contemporary fabrication methods to students in order to further improve their craftsmanship skills using advanced automated processes such as digital modelling, laser cutting, CNC milling, 3D printing casting, wood and metal fabrication techniques. 3 precedents are selected and fabricated to reflect the key concept of my Final Year Design Studio project. These models express key ideas, concepts and contruction assembly that explore different materiality, scales, lighting, spatial experience interiorly and exteriorly to further develop student’s imagination. This course also contributes to my digital fabrication skills for Design Studio models.

Photography has taught me on how to escape from the reality, flashback moments that spontaneously bring me to another world. The unrealistic abstract colours and unheard sound in a busy street draw a connection to the focal point on how I observe and define the quality of the image in a frame.
