Advanced Structural Engineering Services
In most cases design and assessment of structures is adequately supported by ‘best industry practices’. The foundation of these best practices is based on the learning and training that engineers are given during their education, and are provided in conjunction with design codes, standards and industry guidelines. They ensure that structures are safe and cost-efficient and meet regulatory requirements.

Best practices
Best structural engineering practices however, are not always fully sufficient or even appropriate. In such cases, it is necessary to be able to take a step back and apply more fundamental knowledge and specialised analysis than normally applied in the best practice of engineering.
Some of the more common cases where this is relevant includes:
• Development of design for extraordinary structures; i.e. structures of dimensions, geometry and/or materials that in some way are representing novel engineering solutions or structures intended to operate in extraordinary contexts and load environments – lying outside the limits of best practices.
• Reassessment and requalification of existing structures; i.e. situations where existing structures that may have been subject to degradation or accidents require a change of use or an extension of their service life.
• Integrity management supported structural health monitoring; i.e. situations or structural concepts where the adequate level of safety and reliability during the service life depends on monitoring of structural performance, inspections and/or warning systems.
The application of fundamental knowledge and specialised analysis requires expert knowledge. NIRAS’s consultants in all areas of structural engineering can offer world leading services in the area of structural engineering consulting services.
Chimney: Modelling of existing complex concrete section for capacity check.
NIRAS’s expertise – cutting edge tools and techniques
As basis for these services NIRAS builds on expert proficiency within advanced structural mechanics modelling. This includes: nonlinear and dynamic structural response modelling and analysis, probabilistic modelling and reliability analysis, world leading probabilistic digital twin technology, advanced modelling of structural degradation, novel schemes for structural health monitoring (SHM) for structural systems identification and damage detection.
Comprehensive service offering
We are happy to offer these services either directly to owners and operators or in joint ventures together with other consultants and contractors to ensure the delivery of safe, resilient and sustainable construction.
