NEGATIVE SPACE: HOUSING AS A DISCURSIVE VOID SOCIAL HOUSING IN ANFIELD

TERM: JAN 2018- JUNE 2018 MODULE: ARCH352 DESIGN TUTORS: MICHAEL WILFORD CBE, MARCO LULIANO, JANE MOSCARDINI, JAMES JONES, VALENTINO CAPELO.

--------------------Analysing the Roman Forum as the ideal public realm whilst addressing the issue of privacy without fortification was integral to the foundations of this scheme. I explored the urban form of Anfield and its early 20th century ‘Back to Back’ dwellings and aimed to reinterpretate this form in a contemporary setting, instead proposing ‘Front to Front’ living, promoting social interaction and creating pedestrianised walkways for residents. The scheme utilises the Roman form of Dwelling/ Social space/ Monument in a U form, secluding the residents from the surrounding area and providing a space for interaction. The scheme also adopts the theme of ‘a place that gets better over time’, where residents will become more content in their dwellings as they alter and rework the spaces to make them more personal. This project was aided by development of a close relationship to the Anfield community, who were vocal in their opinions of the football stadium & it’s presence, as well as what the Anfield area needs in order to be regenerated.
