Preface
Architecture is driven by curiosity. Explorations of new ideas always comes with questions that can either be answered in a matter of minutes, or may end up taking years to comprehend. But when all questions have been understood, the product of architecture is the response to those questions.

9 Hamilton Ave N. is a neighbourhood brought together as a local community through several existing spaces in the area like the Parkdale market, and the Carleton pub. The client, Taggart Realty Management requested a redevelopment of the entire block, a project that would consist of residential buildings and public spaces that would elevate the community vibrance. Acquainting a level of vibrancy brought through our different approaches, my partner and I aspire to introduce a cluster of new flavours to the neighbourhood.

Point Nephele is an innovative + radical design for an immigration port on the Ottawa River in Ontario, Canada. Historically, the immigration process has overlooked the specific needs of newcomers, particularly highly educated individuals whose qualifications may not align with their desired destination. This raises the question: How can we not only welcome immigrants but also ensure they can live the life they desire upon arrival? Our professor, an immigrant who faced these challenges firsthand, introduced this topic in our studio program. Point Nephele is located on a 20-meter cliffside within Rockcliffe Park, Ottawa.

Point Nephele: An immigration port
Program + Narrative
Project Program: Design a hypothetical immigration port to accept incoming immigrants arriving via boat.
Building Envelope
Site being on the edge of an 18m cliff.
Main objective: Escort newcomers from point A to point B.
Design Narrative: The project will be driven by the concept of cloud formations and the clouds itself. The metaphor of the cliff being a “literal” obstacle an immigrant family meant the narrative of cloud formations a suitable candidate to drive the project. Orographic lift is when a pocket of air is forced to climb over high terrain, and the change in temperature leads to the formation of clouds (most commonly stratus clouds).

Lantern House
A Children’s Hospice/Respite Centre in Vancouver Buildner’s Children’s Hospice Competition Shortlisted
Exterior Render
Hospices have traditionally been regarded as places where the terminally ill can find peace before passing on. However, what if there was a space that did not focus on the concept of endings, but instead, one that offered the possibility of a return, even from the afterlife?

In Japanese Culture:
During the Lantern Festival, families will gather along the foot of a mountain to release paper lanterns. Those lanterns are believed to light the way for their ancestors to find their way back and reunite with their loved ones.
In Chinese Culture:
During the Lantern Festival, families will gather along bodies of water to release paper lanterns as a way to properly send off their loved ones into the afterlife.
The concept of the Chinese paper lanterns strongly mirrors the theme of fireflies portrayed in the film Grave of the Fireflies, as they both symbolize the souls of the departed. To ensure the success of the Lantern House, the combined influence of paper lanterns and Grave of the Fireflies seamlessly collaborated to bring this project to life.

As opposed to the interview-like setting in typical therapy rooms, the hanging lantern pods encourage a safer environment for children under distress, and forms a stronger bond betwee the caretaker and patient.
Wind Chimes:

This provides a unique opportunity for them to showcase their musical abilities and interact with visitors seeking a meditative environment. The sloping design of the floor and ceiling directs the attention of patients towards the interior of the building, creating a cozier experience that helps them disconnect from the outside world, offering a serene and tranquil space to retreat to.

Love Birds
A Bird Airport in Manhattan, NYC
The concept of this design aims to address the topic of the rapid growth of city infrastructure. As cities get bigger, skyscrapers get taller which could lead to the towers disrupting the migration patterns of birds. The “Love Birds” bird airport is a structure situated at the tip of Manhattan that gathers arriving birds from the south, and helps redirect them through the concrete jungle of New York City.

A Virtual Gallery Space
TAG-3 is a virtual gallery space via Mona. It’s a space that plays with two contrasting designs. The first style is the timid, classical style that relies on the columns and arches to form the space. The second style is the modern, and futuristic style that goes against the classical idea. These two clashes in characteristics is what dictates the existence of TAG-3.
