The false mirror Det falske speil

Trondheim | Europan 13 competition First Prize project by The False Miroor Office 2015

Nyhavna is the testing ground of an approach which combines a new waterfront, the existent heritage, the renovation of an industrial district and the presence of cultural actors. Looking at this miscellaneous context, the false mirror launches an inedited process in which combining the reinterpretation of four local archetypes: •The typological reinterpretation of the warehouses •The canalization of the whole neighbourhood •The new fleet of temporary and multi-programmatic barges •A new land-water network. The combination of these features takes shape through the development of a typological abacus consisting in 52 elements: rather than standard, universally applicable devices, each element rapresents a direct declination of the four archetypes. Strandveikaia becomes the stage of an interactive process of interconnected situations, a plan that works with time and against the generic city.

The Structure of Void

Genoa | Master Thesis, 110/110 with honors supervisor: Prof. Giovanni Galli 2013/14 assistant supervisors: Prof. Ing. L.Gambarotta, G. Parodi, A. Zomparelli Nowadays, where the need to save resources is combined with the desire for continuous development and grow, architecture reacts either hiding behind a sterile and outdated functionalism or avoiding the situation by continuing the most frivolous production of shapes. The thesis aims to find an alternative to this fruitless situation developing strategies for designing free-form structures with an high structural performance and able, at the same time, to save construction material. In the history of architecture, many designers such as Gaudi, Musmeci and Nervi have used analogical models to simulate what will be the real building. Lately, digital models have expanded this possibility allowing the design and implementation of highly complex structures. Starting from a research on topological optimization and swarm intelligence the thesis develops a project that aims to investigate research extreme implications.

Rio. Expansion on the Sea

ENSA-Versailles | 5th Year Studio “Question Métropolitaine” Djamel Klouche & Cedric Libert 2011 After the construction of the new TGV station, which will be built for the Olympic Games in 2016, Rio’s central area will be able to welcome new flows of tourist and workers. Taking advantage of the new train station and the nearby huge bus station we created a third transport polarity: a ferry and cruise port. Therefore we developed a business and commercial district which would afford the installation of all new programs this great hub will give birth. Rio De Janeiro’s natural coasts have increased from 1875 by several artificial additions. So we decided to design this new district as a further expansion of the city on the water.

Cultural Bondage

Genoa | 4th Year Restoration Studio Prof. Stefano Musso 2011/12 The project tries to give back life to Spinola-Muratori Palazzo’s Tower which is, nowadays, no more accessible. Many Italian historcal buildings are, usually, transformed into museums or exhibition spaces which represent, for us, the ultimate death of these ancient constructions. For this reason we decided to divide the tower assigning it the most appropiate fucntions for its morfological configuration: offices at lower levels (noisy space near the street) and reading room for the uppers (more silent space). We acted in two directions, restoring conservatevely the original palace and ripristining the tower access to make it completely usable once again.

To not formally alterate the manufact we decided to work on the program and on connections. We divided the tower in two functions according to his morphological qualities. The first two levels will go to the adjacent palazzo taking advantage of the ancient door and the internal stair, which, according to the fire protection standards, are not enough for the entire tower. The remaning floors, which are isolated from the traffic, will be a reading room for the new mediateque. Our intervention, at the end, consist in the project of a new mediateque and the design of the connection between this new program the old one and the restored tower.

HANG it OVER

GAU:DI European student competition | Winner Exposed during 13th Venice Architecture Biennale 2012 Competition subject: “Market hall: space for social interaction Market making is an incredible world: every detail is studied to be efficient: there is no idea, however smart it could be, who could improve this perfect machine. On the other hand, market leaves some recognizable garbage: wet waste and crates. We decided to smartly combine these elements: returning this artefact to the market is a way to sensitize users towards the market itself. Using a simple ecological act, we create a new market through waste.

Every market leaves as mark of itself some recognizable garbage: wet waste and market’s crates, mainly the wooden ones; We decided to smartly resolve these problems, with a coherent approach to the identity of the street market. Wooden crates and wet waste have been reused in various experimentations all around the globe, we just decided to combine the two worlds in COMPOSCRATE: an ecologic combinations of composting from wet waste and wooden crates. Crates are reused as green roof’s elemental structure and vegetable wastes are used to make compost to fill our roof’s module.

Earth Villa

Genoa | 2nd year Construction Design Laboratory Professor: Luisa Pereira 2012 The project involves the construction of a new ticket office and a new residence for Libarna’s archaeological site keeper’s family. The site does not present a natural landscape conformation but instead as this is carried over and has became more and more artificial, over the years. In analogy to his being and starting from the desire not to further contaminate the landscape of the site, we have opted for an underground construction. This choice was also made looking at the features of the new construction. The ground acts as a wrapper and provides, greater protection from railway noise and other kinds of hydro-thermal comfort. The design, has reached the executive level, with drawings from 1:50 to 1:10 scale. A great attention has been given to sustainability involving the construction of a greenhouse and the integration of solar panels on the ticket office roof.

ENSA-Versailles SP32 “Architecture & Music” Richard Scoffier 2011 The subject of the studio “architecture and music” focused on develop a project starting from a chair through operations normally used to compose music. So using Sandro Lopez’s Limu chair through repetition, differentiation and deformation we designed 3 buildings: _HOUSE + SWIMMING POOL: A shell defines its-own functional differentiation without any wall but only by its-own form _APARTMENTS BUILDING + RESTAURANT: By a semi-public spiral promenade you can reach the restaurant meanwhile experiencing its inbetween spaces. _50-STOREY TOWER + AUDITORIUM: The auditorium is placed at the base of the tower, so the lobby is reachable by an escalator. Over there an highly differentiated program take form.
