2012 Sessions Keynote: How the Best Get Better To remain successful in the marketplace, both now and in the future, we must constantly strive to learn more, improve our quality of service, increase customer satisfaction, and increase market share—and do it all in less time with fewer people. Stay ahead of the competition in today’s evolving marketplace with Stevenson’s strategies and business principles. Speaker: Robert Stevenson, Seeking Excellence, Inc.

General Session: Retail CapEx— Look Who’s Spending Identifying which retailers are poised to expand their store base rapidly is critically important for commercial realtors, as well as for A.R.E. members. A global commercial real estate broker and consultant like Colliers has a unique early-in-the-cycle perspective on exactly which retailers are making the CapEx investments in elevating their in-store experience. Natunewicz has the “on the ground” data on which stores are in survival mode, which are investing, and why. She also looks into how retailers are reinventing their physical spaces to elevate the shopping experience, focusing on what really matters to today’s shopper. Speaker: Ann Natunewicz, Colliers International

General Session: Healthcare Strategies in a Changing World The Affordable Care Act will require changes in the way U.S. companies manage company benefits. This session will analyze the rapidly changing state of healthcare in the U.S. and provide insights on how companies can respond to this changing landscape. Learn about the various provisions that will impact your business, some as early as 2013, and explore strategies to help you manage benefit costs now and in the future. Speaker: Brian R. Klepper, PhD, WeCare TLC, LLC and Healthcare Performance Inc.

Idea Exchanges The New Reality of M&A in Our Industry – Post 2007 In this post-2007 world, learn who is buying, who is selling, and current pricing strategies in the retail environments industry. Explore factors to consider when buying or selling, such as timing and steps that need to be completed prior to the process. Bring your questions and concerns to this interactive session. Moderator: Paul Pinkus, McGladrey & Pullen, LLP

The ABCs of Exporting Internationally Many retail environments industry suppliers are well-versed in importing materials, components, and finished pieces, but what do you need to know in order to export to fast-growing economies around the world? Can you bring your profits (if any!) back to North America? What techniques can you use to ensure you get paid? Find out about Department of Commerce assistance programs, and plan to share your own industry-specific experiences. Moderator: Anna Flaaten, Arizona U.S. Export Assistance Center, U.S. Department of Commerce The Case for Collaborative Healthcare Clinics It’s likely you’ve never heard of a collaborative healthcare clinic before, at least not until the general session immediately preceding this breakout by Brian Klepper, PhD. If you like the idea of having some control over the rising cost of healthcare, Klepper will provide details on how to set up a collaborative healthcare clinic, along with a recap of the data and savings that can be gained from participation. Moderator: Brian R. Klepper, PhD, WeCare TLC, LLC, and Healthcare Performance Inc.

General Session: Intellectual property—Options for Vendors Intellectual property rights are a chronic problem in the retail environments industry, both in supplier/ retailer and supplier/supplier relationships. Recent lawsuits, including the high-profile suit against JCPenney by H+B, have designers and manufacturers asking how to protect proprietary ideas, how to maintain the value of design and engineering strength, protect the brand’s intellectual value, and manage subcontract relationships to ensure those we train and develop aren’t becoming direct competitors. Whether it’s a customer “shopping” your design, or using your drawings to get competitive quotations, this panel will explore a variety of options while reviewing recent court cases and industry battles. Moderator: Bob Rosean, TJ Hale Panelists: Norm Friedrich, OCTANORM USA Inc. ; Martha Lessman-Katz, Gordon-Feinblatt, Rothman, Hoffberger & Hollander

Keynote: Reading the Economic Signs to Find Your Way The recovery in the U.S. economy is continuing, but at a mild pace. What does this mean for our industry?

Election-year politics bombard us with negative sound bites and idyllic promises. Headline news swirling around events in Europe have fed market volatility and stoked uncertainty. China’s growth is the slowest in years and Brazil’s economy may already be in recession. It feels like another recession could hit at any time, but will it? From the very highly rated Institute for Trend Research, Dietrich will provide a short-term and long-term economic forecast and detail how this forecast will impact the retail environments industry. He will also include a forecast for demand in A.R.E. member markets and steps attendees should take in light of these projections. Speaker: Dr. Jeff Dietrich, Institute for Trend Research

General Session: Technology & Transcendence—Bricks, Clicks and Beyond As society grows ever more technological and socially networked, a shift toward a “right-brained” (intuitive, relational, and contextual) approach to living, relating, and shopping will shape the future of retail experience making. The session will delve into understanding how recent discoveries in neuroscience, the changing communication of stories through social media, and emerging technologies like mobile checkout and holograms will influence the way brands connect to their customers. Kepron will explore the impact of these changes on physical stores and in-store suppliers, providing examples from his upcoming book, Retail (r)Evolution. Speaker: David Kepron, Retail (r)Evolution
