Our senior population is growing – and the need to stay active and engaged is growing with it. One in every eight people in the U.S. – 13 percent – is an adult age 65 or older. Current life expectancy figures project a 65-year-old male will live another 15.5 years; a female 19.2. By 2030, older adults will grow to 72.1 million people and 19 percent of the population. And by 2050, the most optimistic life expectancy projection gives 65-year-old males another 25 years to live and women 35. More people are living longer than at any point in history, and they want those years to be full of social, educational and recreational opportunities. The North Coast is full of events and activities that keep older adults exploring, involved and engaged. Advocacy aims to influence public policy by providing a conduit for individuals and organizations to voice an opinion. These opinions, in turn, provide policy makers an opportunity to respond to constituentsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; needs. Advocacy can take shape though several types of action: online or in-person, and as individuals or groups. Advocates write letters, call or organize meetings to see legislators, attend town-hall meetings, organize or participate in protests, directly lobby legislators, and communicate with policy makers through social media and other methods. Effective advocacy is a mix of identifying the right audience (the policy maker), having the right message (clearly stating what you want to achieve and how it relates to the policy), and including an individual perspective (telling a story).

Caregiving More than 44 million people care for an aging, disabled or seriously ill family member. The job of caregiver is vitally important. It is a challenging situation that can lead to the caregiver suffering from stress, frustration, depression and financial issues related to the care of a loved one. Informal (unpaid) family caregivers provide the majority of assistance that enables chronically ill disabled older adults to continue to live at home rather than in specialized care centers. • Set up a daily routine of mealtimes, bedtime, and other activities so that the children have some predictability in their lives. • Help your grandchildren to feel that they are “home” by making room for them and their belongings. Your home needs to be welcoming, safe, and child-friendly. • Work on communication skills. Talk to your grandchildren, and make sure that the children know that they can always talk to you. • Practice positive discipline that emphasizes education, not punishment, and that rewards good behavior with praise. • Set up a few rules, and explain the rules to the children. Then, enforce them consistently. Finding shared activities. Building new relationships can be difficult. Sometimes, it helps to find things that you can do with your grandchildren to nurture your relationship and to make them feel secure and happy in their new home. • Read. Children love to hear stories, and even older children may surprise you by sitting quietly

as you read aloud. Children who see you read have a better chance of becoming readers themselves. • Get computer savvy. If you don’t have your own computer, use the one at the public library. The library may have classes or other free help for you. You’ll find lots of things that you and your grandchildren can do on the computer, from games to school research. • Join a group. There are many local support groups for grandparents raising grandchildren, and a number of these groups also provide activities for the children. You might also find welcoming groups at your place of worship or in the local schools or library. • Take up a sport or other outdoor activity. Children of all ages need to be active. Physical activity may help your grandchildren feel better and develop a healthy lifestyle, and it can be an important stress reliever for you. • Take care of yourself. If you’re feeling stressed, overwhelmed, and unhappy, you are not going to be able to provide the best care for your grandchildren. It’s important that you take care of yourself and not allow yourself to be overwhelmed by your parental responsibilities. Here are some suggestions: • Find a support group—either a group specifically for grandparents raising grandchildren or some other support group where you can share your challenges with others who will understand. • Talk to someone. This could be a friend or relative or a professional, such as a counselor, family doctor, or someone at your church or temple. Unburdening yourself can be a stress reliever. • Take a break. A short time away from your grandchildren may give you some time to relax. Look for a trusted adult who can babysit or take over while you’re out. • Take a parenting class. A class may help you to feel more comfortable with your status as a caregiver for young children. It will also provide resources in the form of your teacher and the other students in the class. • Learn to say “no.” You don’t have time to do everything. Learn to make priorities, and eliminate the unnecessary tasks in your life.

Caregiving

Many grandparents today are stepping in to raise their grandchildren when the children’s own parents are not able or willing to do so. In fact, the U.S. Census of 2000 found that over 2.4 million grandparents have responsibility for their grandchildren. If you are one of these grandparents, you have made numerous sacrifices in order to provide a better life for your grandchildren. What are some things you can do now to provide the best possible care for your grandchildren while still preserving your own health and well-being? Making the adjustment. Often, grandparents take on this obligation when the grandchildren’s own parents abandon them or when the children can no longer live with them because of the parent’s mental disorder, substance abuse, or incarceration. Thus, you may have the added burden of caring for children who suffered from abuse or neglect from their own parents. These children may feel insecure and afraid; they may be angry at their situation and even embarrassed by it. It will take time for these children to feel safe and secure. You can encourage these good feelings and ease their adjustment to their new home in a number of ways:

Depression and suicide are significant public health issues for older adults. Depression is one of the most common mental disorders experienced by seniors, but fortunately is treatable by a variety of means. Adults approaching later adulthood, most notably the so-called Baby Boom cohort, seem to be evidencing depressive disorders at significantly higher rates than previous groups. The reasons for this trend are the subject of much debate and not clearly understood. Because depression tends to be a recurrent disorder, many older adults will have experienced previous bouts of depression and will be at increased risk. Depression is also associated with suicide. Older adults have the highest rates of suicide of any age group, and this is particularly pronounced among men. Geriatric depression will continue to be a topic worthy of much scientific and applied interest in the years to come. Death is a certainty of life, yet many fail to plan for it and nearly everyone is overwhelmed by the grief and anguish that follow the loss of a loved one. Each individual copes with dying, death, grief and loss differently. This chapter contains resources to help plan for life’s end, acknowledge the pain and deal with the aftermath. The time before and after can be confusing, stressful and frightening. No one has to deal with it alone or at the last-minute. Use the resources below to help you close an estate, donate organs, plan a funeral or cope with a terminal illness. Remember: all of the planning done ahead of time lightens the burden for everyone at the end of life. It enables individual wishes to be honored when the individual cannot speak for him- or herself.

ADVANCE HEALTH CARE DIRECTIVE The Advance Health Care Directive (AHCD) provides two important functions: 1) It allows you to provide specific instructions to your doctor and hospital staff about the kinds of medical care and life-sustaining treatment you want to have in the event you are incapacitated and unable to speak for yourself, and 2) It allows you to appoint someone as your agent to carry out your wishes and to make medical care decisions on your behalf. In California, it is used in place of a “living will” or Durable Power of Attorney for Health Care. You can obtain an “AHCD Kit” published by the California Medical Association from the Area 1 Agency on Aging (707) 442-9591 or the HumboldtDel Norte Medical Society at (707) 442-2367, or you can contact Legal Services of Northern California for consultation and assistance. Once completed, provide copies to your agent, your doctor, your hospital, and anyone likely to be called in the event of an emergency. POWER OF ATTORNEY FOR FINANCES A second important document is the Power of Attorney for Finances (DPOF) which allows you to choose someone you trust to handle your finances in the event you are not able to do so. The Older Americans Act of 1965 established two major food programs for seniors. “Congregate” meals, served in a dining site setting, and “home-delivered” meals delivered to homebound seniors in their place of residence. Nationwide, these programs provide approximately 242 million meals to seniors and their spouses annually. There are many resources available to people in need of supplemental foods. Some programs distribute government commodities on specific days, others offer emergency meals or groceries. Resources for food include food stamps (CalFresh), food pantries, home-delivered meals, private food delivery services and congregate meals. Some congregate meal programs are offered along with other types of services, such as socializing, recreational activities and health checks and some request a donation. Generally, the senior must be age 60 or over or be the guest of a senior. Meals are typically served during the noon hour and are well-balanced, low in fat and salt.

Independence for a lifetime is everyone’s dream – but it takes more than regular exercise and good nutrition. Medication management, emergency preparedness, and dental awareness make a difference and are some of the examples of the information available in this chapter. Almost 30 percent of hospitalizations for people age 65 and older are related to lack of adherence to prescription directions. Medicines can only help if taken as prescribed – and there’s equipment available to help you do that. According to the Fall Prevention Center of Excellence, falls and fall-related injuries are the leading cause of injury deaths among older adults. Fall-related hip fractures account for 25 percent of injury deaths over age 65 and 34 percent of injury deaths among those 85 and older. Since nearly four of every five falls for older adults happen in or near the home, seniors living alone are often concerned about how to call for help in an emergency. Around the clock access to emergency medical services can be as easy as owning a home device to activate if assistance is needed. About a quarter of adults aged 60 and older have lost their natural teeth. That requires nutritional adjustments. Dentures are not as efficient for chewing food as natural teeth, so denture wearers often prefer soft, easily chewed foods and may avoid fresh fruits and vegetables. Care for Yourself Being a caregiver for someone you love is one of the greatest gifts you can give, but it can also be very stressful. As you care for your loved one, there are resources that can help and things you can do to ease the strain on your own health and well-being. Here are some ways to care for yourself while caring for your loved one: 1. Talk to your doctor if you feel depressed or anxious. Signs that you may need help include crying more, sleeping more or less than usual, changes in appetite, and lack of interest in your regular activities. 2. Find out about sources of support and help in your community. Reach out to family members, friends, neighbors, your place of worship, your Area Agency on Aging or your workplace for help with caregiver tasks. 3. Realize that your health matters – it benefits everyone if you stay healthy and less stressed. Visit your doctor every year for a check-up and be sure to get a flu shot. 4. Be aware of the toll stress takes on your health. Try to find time for exercise, eating well and sleeping enough. 5. Learn about the condition your loved one is facing and how it may affect his/her physical and emotional state.

Trains, planes, automobiles -- to some in urban settings, dependable transportation is a choice, not a concern. However, in rural settings, the availability of transportation is often limited if provided at all. Reliable transportation is critical to helping rural communities and community members remain healthy and productive. It is what binds communities together and supports economic growth. Each year, many older adults stop driving and become dependent on others to meet their transportation needs. Others give up driving due to disabilities and other medical reasons. This is more than a personal problem – it’s a social issue. At a recent White House Conference on Aging, mobility was ranked the third highest critical issue for older adults. Transportation is also a pivotal factor in determining whether the disabled and aged populations are able to remain in their homes and their communities. Enhancing transportation opportunities for a rural community can improve economic growth and community development that will ensure quality of life for residents in rural environments. A variety of transportation options exist in Del Norte and Humboldt Counties ranging from public transportation to specialized door-to-door services.
