Graduation 2017
Roswell Daily Record
What does graduation mean to you?
bout a week ago, students all over the town were celebrating their newfound freedom, as they said goodbye to high school once and for all. As I watched the seniors prepare for graduation at Goddard, I heard something that caught my attention. Lots of the seniors were saying how much they were going to miss high school and their peers. While this may baffle some of us underclassmen who are counting down the days until we graduate, it actually makes a lot of sense. While graduation can be an exciting time, it can also be one of the scariest times in a student’s educational career. Students are faced with the bittersweet reality that they are going to become adults. To some, that means that they’re leaving behind their families, friends and homes to become their own person and forge their own path in life. As scary or intimidating as this may seem, I have faith that these students will live on to do extraordinary things. The seniors
Kaitlyn Ware Millennial Voices I have met this year are some of the hardest working and most incredible people I have ever met. I decided to ask a few seniors the same question, “What does graduation mean to you?” When I asked Monika Guerra, a senior at Goddard High School, she had a rather interesting response. “Personally, it has not hit me yet. It might hit me once I walk down with my cap and gown, or it might hit me the day I’m packing my things to move for college. I’ll just have to wait and see. But one thing I do know for sure is that I do not regret a single thing that I went through in my years of high school. The friends I made, the mistakes I made, the risks I took
— it has made me who I am and turned the past four years into the years I won’t forget. “Some may not believe so, but high school will probably have the biggest impact on your life, on who you will become once you’re out into the real world. We go in as young teens who know almost nothing about how the world works, and leave as young adults, shaped by our past decisions and experiences, hoping that maybe now we have a better idea on how the world works. “Once you’re graduated you’re thinking, ‘I’m so glad it’s over,’ but at the same time, you still feel like you’re going to come back to start a new school year and come back to your classes and see all your friends again — but you’re done. This is the end of everything you’ve ever been involved in and everything you’re used to, and now you have to say goodbye. I’m not really sure how I feel about that yet. I’m just grateful that I’ve been through what I’ve been through, and that I’ve been able to make it this far.” Julia Diaz, another senior at
Goddard, had a similar response: “Graduation to me is a lifelong accomplishment, but it’s also a heartbreaker. I have been preparing for this moment my entire life and to graduate with highest honors, it’s a dream come true! But graduation is also a heartbreaking moment. It signifies the end of childhood.
The seniors I have met this year are some of the hardest working and most incredible people I have ever met. “We’ve grown up with all of our classmates, and to think that graduation is the last time we will see them, it astonishes me. So, with mixed feelings of excitement, fear and sadness in our hearts, we will walk across that football
field and start our new lives.” Amy Tattershall’s response was short, but powerful. “Graduating feels like some kind of gateway separating comfort and risk, but the kind of exciting risk you’ve prepared to take,” she said. Talking to these three seniors made me realize exactly what they are going through. And I wish nothing but the best for not only them, but the rest of the class of 2017. If you are a student reading this now, I strongly encourage you to make the best of the school years you have left. And if you are a senior who has just graduated, I have one thing to say to you. Never give up, I see potential in each and every one of you and I hope that you live on to do incredible things for this world. So long, and thank you. ——— The views expressed in this column are those of the author, not of the Roswell Daily Record. Kaitlyn Ware is a freshman at Goddard High School. ALBUQUERQUE — How much is knowledge worth? Thousands of dollars a semester slowly evolving into debt can haunt students for a large part of their lives. The impact of this price is all-inclusive — affecting students entering college either as traditional college students straight out of high school or a nontraditional student looking for a career change. In many cases, parents of those seeking a college education will often foot the bill. However, this isn’t the case for all students, and for those whose parents don’t or can’t cover the cost of a college education, there are a few options. Understanding these options can save individuals a great amount of stress now and in the future. The first step students who are seeking financial help should take is applying for the
Free Application for Federal Student Aid and understanding what it is. The FAFSA can be filled out by any student, both traditional and nontraditional. While filling the form out does not guarantee financial aid, it is a good step in the right direction for students who are seeking financial help. The form can be filled out from home and on the FAFSA website. After filling out the FAFSA, students may be presented with the options to receive Pell Grants and student loans to cover the costs Pell Grants do not. There are two types of loans offered: subsidized and unsubsidized. Knowing the difference is essential, because subsidized loans accrue interest while a student is in school and unsubsidized loans do not (the U.S. Department of Education pays for any interest accrued while the student is in school). Both options are viable to

help pay for college. But if a student is approved for a subsidized loan, taking advantage of the lack of accruing interest while in college is a wise choice. Setting up a payment plan right away, even if it’s only for the minimum payment amount, adds up over time, allowing debt to lessen while a student is attending college. After leaving college, a student is given a grace period where payments will not be due. This grace period comes if a student leaves college for a break or if they graduate. Another option, of course, is scholarships. While the option to apply for scholarships is often given by high schools, the door does not automatically close after high school graduation. A student can still apply for scholarships while attending college. Scholarships can be found in any field.

Ultimately the most effective tool in paying for college is basic research. If you never ask, you will never find an answer. Knowledge may come with a price tag, but it should not be available to only those who can easily afford it. Visit: financialaid.unm.edu or career.unm.edu for more information. Don’t forget: the FAFSA application deadline is June 30. Distributed by Community News Exchange.
