The men behind Hike and Spike It J.T. Keith Roswell daily record Bill Saunders and Ronnie Parker sat behind a table at the end of a tent facing the entrance of Cielo Grande Recreation Area. People registering for Hike It and Spike It formed two lines, going nine rows deep. Unmoved, both men sat in their chairs with HISI gear on — Parker with his bucket hat turned up, and a smile on his face while chatting up the people he waited on; Saunders talking to the athletes he was registering in a measured manner. Both men asked the athletes where they had come from, and if it was their first time at HISI? Both men told the players to have a good time and thanked them for coming. The athletes were oblivious to who had waited on them. Perhaps they couldn’t have cared less that the co-owners had signed them up to play in the tournament they founded. Originally both men worked for and competed in Gus Macker basketball tournaments. Next, they started hosting flag football events with 15-20 teams. Some of the 4-on-

4 and 6-on-6 flag football games becoming extremely physical. Gus Macker basketball owners Mitch and Scott McNeil were not interested in doing both basketball and flag football; giving Saunders and Parker their blessings to take over the Gridiron Gus, i.e., Gus Macker football. Stepping away from Gus Macker Enterprises, Parker and Saunders formed PS Sports in 2001. In 2002, they changed the name to Hike It and Spike It. Saunders has a doctorate in education (EdD) and is a superintendent of Schools in Marquette, Michigan. Parker, who resides in Gaylord, Michigan, is a sales representative for Adidas.

How it began

Parker and Saunders recall playing in a double-elimination flag football tournament where they beat a major-league baseball player’s team, sending the other team into the loser’s bracket. Both teams met again in the championship game, with Saunders and Parker losing to the majorleague player’s team in the championship. Upset they had only lost once and that they didn’t have a chance to

They felt they could do better. “That one game we lost upset us,” Parker said. “We lost once, and we were done. We didn’t get a chance to settle it on the field. It was supposed to be a double-elimination tournament. That’s what got us going.”

“We can do this a lot better than these folks are doing it,’” Saunders said. Believing they could do a better job of hosting a flag football tournament, they decided to use their established relationships with people in the business to host a tournament on their own. And one contact, Cla Avery, who had hosted the first Gus Macker basketball tournament in Roswell, wanted to bring a flag football tournament to his

community.

Changes

The co-owners have made several changes since they started hosting the tournament. In the beginning, the games were played over the Thanksgiving weekend starting in 1996. The tournament would be played over that weekend for three years, then moved to Mother’s Day in 1999. In 2000, they decided to use the Memorial Day weekend to offi-

cially kick off not only the summer but their tournament as well. Along with Roswell’s local organizers, Cla Avery and Jim Matteucci, they also created “Show Me the Money” as its top division, with prize money of $15,000 split between the first ($10,000), second ($3,000) and third ($1,000) place teams. While the competition on the field allowed for more

PARKING INFORMATION

To access our site, go west from North Main Street onto College Avenue and proceed through two stop signs. As you go past the Roswell Unity Center (old airport tower), you will discover our location. The first entrance is very busy and the second entrance on the west side provides easier access. Access is also available from 8th street near Spring River Golf Course. RESERVED PARKING — Reserved parking in the northwest parking lot and the three smaller south one-way parking lots will benefit the New Mexico Youth ChalleNGe Academy. A $10 donation for single one-time parking or $20 donation for a weekend pass will be requested. FREE PARKING - All remaining parking will be open parking around Cielo Grande Recreation Complex at no charge. There are miles of paved parking with four entrances/locations for participant and spectator parking. Free close-to-field

access lots off of College Avenue, west of the existing playing fields, will have parking all the way to 8th Street. Our easiest access free parking is off of 8th Street, just west of the existing playing fields. And finally, our free, but extremely congested, parking is at the main reserved parking entrance on College Avenue. To avoid problems with law enforcement, do not park or drive on the walking path south of the playing fields and observe all NO PARKING signs. If someone double parks (blocks another vehicle in) or parks in a non-designated area, they will be towed at the vehicle owner’s expense ($150 minimum fee; see towing signs at all site entrances). RV parking will be located on the north side of College Avenue, off-site. Free RV is allowed. Please drive slowly and cautiously as we have many more pedestrian crossings this year.

EVACUATION PLAN AND PROCEDURE — We expect our parking lots to be full and the overflow areas to be very crowded with vehicles. The public safety team, along with the Streets department and parking staff, has placed barricades and road closed signs in strategic locations to help with traffic congestion in case of evacuation during an unforeseen event. We are asking that all motorists obey traffic signs and follow the traffic patterns as directed by staff members. Remember, your safety is our No. 1 concern. In the unlikely event of an emergency, instructions will be announced over the loudspeakers at Cielo Grande and on the eventʼs official radio station, Q 97.1 FM.

excitement, it created an unwelcome attitude among many of the competitors on the field. Instead of showing good sportsmanship and character, which is what

T h e 2 0 1 8 G r i d i r o n G a z e tt e the tournament is founded on, some teams were showing the opposite attitude. With children, adolescents, women and future athletes watching, the “Show Me the Money” title game in 2016 convinced Saunders and Parker, along with local organizers Matteucci and Avery, to

take a calculated risk — by lowering the prize money to restore order and get back to their core values, as well as the mission statement that embodies Character Counts! And Pursuing Victory with Honor. All the men agreed; they would be willing to lose the wrong teams in

order to keep the right teams that held to their core values. The “Show Me the Money” payout was reduced to a total of $6,000. First-place would receive $3,000, second-place $2,000, and third-place $1,000. “We are always tweaking and looking at how

we can make this a better tournament,” Saunders said. “We felt like what happened last year was taking away from our efforts to have a successful event.” In early November, all four men will sit down and evaluate what went right with the tournament, and if any changes

need to be made to make the tournament better. But Parker already feels strongly about this year’s tourney. “The 2017 HISI was the best tournament we’ve had in 22 years,” he said.

Tucson Turf Elite football loves coming to HISI By J.T. Keith Roswell Daily Record For some families, Memorial Day weekend means going on vacation, hanging out with loved ones, tossing a football back and forth and a little barbecue. For Toby Bourguet, he will be forever grateful to Roswell’s Jason Montoya, who volunteered years ago to put him and his best friend, Sean Roebuck, on his Hike and Spike It 4-on4 Charity Flag Football team. Montoya’s team had just won a national championship — and both Bourguet and Roebuck had driven eight hours from Marana, Ariz. to play with Da Bullies in the “Show Me the Money” bracket. They made it to the round of eight before losing. That set in motion a drive for Bourguet to compete — something he and his family could do together. Bourguet is the director of operations, head coach and quarterback for the Tucson Turf. He loves Hike and Spike It so much, he has teams competing in seven divisions this year: 15-16 male, 13-14 female, 13-14 male, 11-12 male, two 10-and-under squads, 8U and of course, the “Show Me the Money” bracket. Six of Bourguet’s children will be playing in the tournament: sons Trenton (18), Coben (16), Treyson (14), Kendren (9) and Emerson (6), and daughter Rylen (12) — they have all won national titles. “We’ve had a pretty good year since HISI,”

Bourguet said. “Our high school team won the high school club circuit, so they are the No. 1 team in the nation. It’s seven-on-seven. Our middle school team was a top eight in the nation, and our 14U boys, they just took the NFL flag championship in the Pro Bowl — and that was played live on ESPN — out of 40,000 teams, and are ranked the No. 1 team in the nation. Then our 14U girls are the No. 1 team in the nation. They took a national championship at the Pro Bowl as well.” No matter how much success his teams have when they play other places, Borguet feels compelled to come and play at HISI. For him, it is the start of their summer. This year school will be out on Thursday and he will be in Roswell Friday. “We’ve had other tournaments offer to pay for our transportation,” Bourguet said, “and to put us up and pay our entry fee, but we don’t do any other tournaments to start our summer off before we do HISI. This starts our summer vacation.” While here, Tucson Turf stays at the Roadway Inn Courtyard. Bourguet said it makes his family and team feel good to see their names on the billboards welcoming them to Roswell. Usually, on Saturday night the team will put up a big-screen TV and barbecue and watch their games. It is the family atmosphere of Roswell and the people that create a bond with them. To them, Roswell feels like a home away from home. Last season Tucson

Tucson Turf’s quarterback Treyson throws a pass in the national championship game in the Pro Bowl. Turf won in four divisions at the HISI. This year they are bringing seven teams to compete, one more than last season, with more than 120 people making the trip. “Hike It and Spike It is what we do,” Bourguet said. “The whole Roswell national committee has made it so easy for us to come back. They’ve been so kind to us — we try to respect the tournament. We love Roswell, we plan for this every year. It’s how we start out summers. On the last day of

school, we pick up our kids at 12 p.m. There are 10-12 vehicles that will travel to Roswell.” Bourguet is encouraged by the fact that HISI gives a Character Counts! Sportsmanship Award to go along with a national trophy. “We cherish (sportsmanship awards) as much as we cherish national championships,” Bourguet said. “If we don’t display the character we’re looking for it doesn’t matter. We don’t talk about winning, we

talk about controlling your attitude and effort. We want the kids to be good people.” Bourguet tries to instill in his kids what his father instilled in him — that life comes before any sport. Sports are supposed to be enjoyable. Bourguet’s son (Trenton) was named National High School Quarterback of the Year. He has won 12-plus national championships in Roswell. “I like flag football,” Bourguet said, “because it limits their (players’)

injuries. ... kids can just play and not have to worry about getting injured. We teach life skills and a lot of speed and agility stuff. We create a lot of football intelligence. We’re not just great athletes, we just know what it takes to get it done. We teach our kids to keep their composure and they’re character driven. They’re not just focused on winning football games. Both our national championships were won on the last play of the game.”
