In the true story “A Friend of the Family,” you play a young woman kidnapped multiple times by a trusted acquaintance. How was it for you to act that out?

I’ve done other things that are based on real-life situations, like “I, Tonya,” and it’s definitely interesting to “be” that person who actually has been af fected by those things and to tell her stor y.

Luckily, the real-life Jan Broberg – who I play in this – is so kind. She came and visited the set, and it was crazy to have her there and to be with her. It’s an insane stor y, but I’m honored to be a par t of telling it.

You’ve done some fairly dark projects lately, also including “The Bad Seed Returns.” What makes you gravitate toward those?

It’s strange. Whenever I look back, I distinctly have three dif ferent times in my

career When I was little-little, I feel like I was the fun little blonde girl. But then as I got older, it was like I got into these more interesting stories that I really got to explore, with all the younger versions that I played of people.

Then all of a sudden, it went from like all that fun, character-y stuf f to (things that were more) dramatized or I was killing people (in them). I really am a ver y energetic and happy person, so I don’t know
