Patriotic Roswell

Celebrate America’s Independence Day with stars of music

By Christina Stock Vision Editor isitors and locals alike are invited by the city of Roswell to join in the celebrations on the Fourth of July at Cielo Grande Recreation Area, 1600 W. College Blvd. The 21st annual Roswell Sertoma Club’s Mike Satterfield Memorial Extravaganza includes a kids zone, as well as local food vendors and entertainment. At 6:15 p.m. the free musical entertainment kicks off with the New Mexico band Rhythm Divine. The band performs traditional New Mexico Music, rock ‘n’ roll, blues and country. The group gained quick popularity with its release of “Saca La Botella,” followed up by “Ven A Mi” and the hit “Dona Juana,” which won an award as one of the Quince Grandes De Nuevo Mexico 2008. In 2016, Rhythm Divine received its second Quince Grande Award with “Pensando En Ti.” Carl Lucero is the drummer and founder of Rhythm Divine. In a phone interview he shared his reaction, learning that they would open for headliner Billy Ray Cyrus. “It’s funny,” he said. “In this business, sometimes you have to go and find an event, sometimes it falls in your lap. I was contacted by the city and asked to come down there to do that concert. Needless to say, I was thrilled, we’re really excited performing, sharing the stage with the band, with grammy-nominated Billy Ray Cyrus and get some exposure in that part of the state.” Asked about the style of the band, Lucero said, “When we take the stage, we want to have fun, interact with the crowd and want the people involved. We’re not playing just one kind of music all night; we improvise and do a variety of music. We’re a variety band — we do oldies; we do Spanish; we do country; we do rock ‘n’ roll; we do old-school top 40 — just a good mixture of music to keep the ambiance going and get people dancing. We are really excited on playing in southeastern New Mexico and we like to invite everybody. I know there is a little bit of down — our prayers are with the firefighters who suffered and their families. It was such a tragic accident preparing for the Fourth of July. It was a bad explosion with two of the firefighters in real bad shape. Our prayers are with them and their families.” For those who are visiting Roswell and haven’t heard, 12 Roswell firefighters

were injured in early June — two of them severely — while handling the fireworks with their colleagues, an explosion happened. The city announced on June 14 that fireworks will not be part of this year’s Fourth of July celebration. At 7:30 p.m., country music star Billy Ray Cyrus’ concert begins. Cyrus became a household name over the course of his unprecedented career, which spans music, television and theater. The Flatwoods, Kentucky, native exploded onto the music scene when his first album, Some Gave All, debuted on the all-genre Billboard album chart at No. 1 in 1992. The lead single, “Achy Breaky Heart,” became a phenomenon as the single went multi-platinum. After “Achy Breaky Heart,” Cyrus followed up with back-to-back hits, “It Could’ve Been Me,” “She’s Not Crying Anymore,” “Wher’m I Gonna Live When I Get Home?” and the anthemic “Some Gave All.” Cyrus knocked himself out of the top Billboard position with his second No. 1 album, It Won’t Be The Last. “To me, my most defining moment in country was being joined by George Jones and Loretta Lynn on my self-penned ‘Country Music Has the Blues,’” Cyrus said in an email. He also enjoyed a successful career as an actor in the 2001 TV series “Doc” and the 2016-17 sitcom “Still The King,” as well as the Disney series “Hannah Montana” with his daughter Miley Cyrus. Recently, Cyrus has shattered records with Lil Nas X with the global smash, “Old Town Road,” which has remained No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for 9 weeks straight. “Old Town Road” was chosen for the movie trailer “Rambo: Last Blood” — the Sylvester Stallone movie will premiere later this year in September. The city of Roswell sks visitors to arrive early in order to avoid parking complications. For more information, call the City of Roswell Public Affairs Department at 575-637-1203. Another patriotic concert is planned on July 6 during the UFO Festival. The 44th Army Band will perform for free at the Pearson Auditorium on North Main Street on the New Mexico Military Institute grounds. Doors open at 11:30 a.m. The concert begins at 12:30 p.m.

Festival and its entertainment side, as well. He had often been the grand marshal during the UFO Light Parade. In his last interview with the Vision Magazine announcing his retirement, he said, “I’ve been so pleased at the response of Roswell because you meet people from all over the world. It is such a good example to tell people about it. I know some people who say, ‘Oh, they have costume contests.’ Oh, for crying all out, they are bringing the kids with them on vacation, they got to have something to do. Let’s be honest, parents take their kids on such a long haul, you got to promise them something. I am so pleased about Roswell. It’s made me feel at home. I was inducted into the Roswell UFO Hall of Fame. What I really like is the opportunity to meet people. I normally sit at the vendor’s table all the time, I do panel discussions, a lecture or two, but it gives me a chance to meet people from all over the world and see how universal the interest in the subject is. What more can a speaker ask for, or a writer? They are my best customer, they buy my books.” Friedman would be happy this year, as well, as the city of Roswell, the International UFO Museum and Research Center, the many volunteers, business owners, artists and organizations stepped up to offer a large variety of serious and not-so-serious events for visitors to attend and enjoy. Donald Schmitt has known Stanton Friedman for many years and considered him a friend. Schmitt would often sit next to him on panels and they often worked together. In a phone interview, Schmitt said, “Every time I come back to Roswell, it’s a little more lonely. I think over the last 30 years, just everybody — even eye witnesses to 1947 (the alleged UFO crash near Roswell) — they all became such wonderful friends. We used to exchange Christmas cards, and when I got married, many of them sent cards and gifts. It’s like you are losing your aunts and uncles over and over again. “As far as myself also coming from a small town, you know your neighbors; you watch out for your neighbors, you attend all the graduations and all the weddings and then all the funerals,” Schmitt said. “As much as there will be a tribute during the festival, I am going to recommend — because we have our walk of fame and Stan’s picture hangs there — that we also put up a plaque of Stan’s involvement, of him being truly the father of the “Roswell Incident,” as we know it. Because without him acknowledging and accepting its historic importance, we may not be talking right now, there may not be a museum (International UFO Museum see UFO on page 19

he high desert around Roswell hides many secrets, tragedies and mysteries. None are greater than the 1947 mystery that involved an alleged flying saucer that crashed outside of Roswell carrying beings that supposedly were not from Earth. Every decade or so, the government releases — often because of public demands — new statements. There are versions circulating amongst scientists and amateurs that the “Roswell Incident” was rooted in crashed hot air balloons, test dummies, a Soviet spy plane, human altitude testing gone terribly wrong, or the mysterious unidentified flying object from outer space. The fact remains that on July 8, 1947, a press release from the intelligence office of the 509th Bombardment group at Roswell Army Air Field — authorized by intelligence officer Maj. J.A. Marcel — made the front page of the Roswell Daily Record, stating that in fact, the RAAF came into possession of a flying saucer. Not even 24 hours later, the flying saucer report was pulled, stating it was a weather balloon — and for decades, silence followed, until nuclear physicist Stanton Friedman’s curiosity opened up “Pandora’s box” when he got to meet and talk to Marcel, who was retired. Today, most of the eye-witnesses to the “Roswell Incident” have passed on — and this year we lost Friedman. “We mourn the death of a man who made Roswell famous, Stanton T. Friedman,” Roswell Daily Record publisher Barbara Beck said. “He was not afraid to stand up and debunk UFO hoaxes. His belief in extraterrestrials was based on data about UFO events he found buried in U.S. government documents. He was a calm, matter-of-fact person who stood by what he believed. He helped make our town famous, but never sought to exploit it. He will be missed.” While being a serious scientist, Friedman enjoyed Roswell’s festivities at the UFO

Spaceport Roswell A virtual reality event opens for the first time during the UFO Festival

Submitted oebuck Entertainment, creator of the Roswell Christmas Railway, is launching Spaceport Roswell, a virtual reality attraction, during the 2019 UFO Festival. Spaceport Roswell will allow visitors to journey into space, around the world and through time using virtual reality technology, according to event organizers. The virtual reality attraction will be open July 4-8 at a temporary location at 220 N. Main St., next to Bank of the Southwest. Visitors will select a journey, then flight attendants will assist them in donning a virtual reality headset as visitors embark on their chosen experience. The first featured journey — entitled “1947” — puts visitors on the alien ship moments before it crashes into the desert in the historical event that became known as the “Roswell Incident.” In the program, presented by the Roswell Daily Record, visitors get to see firsthand what happened to make Roswell world famous, according to a press release from event organizers. “Of course, we have all heard the Roswell story, but we wanted people to feel like they were there when it happened,” said Spaceport Roswell producer Jacob Roebuck. “That is the kind of experience VR technology can create.” Spaceport Roswell will open at its temporary location during the UFO Festival with the “1947” journey and several other selections. Later in the year, Roebuck Entertainment is looking to re-open Spaceport Roswell with dozens of “destinations” at a permanent location in Roswell. Journeys will include time travel to historic events, visits to exotic locations and sci-fi futuristic adventures. “The magic of Spaceport Roswell is, you will be able to go places, see things and experience realities that otherwise are impossible to access. Virtual reality removes the constraints

Full steam ahead Galacticon & SciFi Film Fest move downtown By Christina Stock Vision Editor

T

he Galacticon & SciFi Film Fest organizers are bringing their events downtown, with Galacticon finding its home in the newly renovated Roswell Convention and Civic Center (RCCC). “They were very accommodating and excited to have us,” organizer Elaine Mayfield said. “We are going to display the new Hyundai Ironman.” (If Stark Industries built a crossover car: The Hyundai Iron Man car is a limited-edition version of fictional character Tony Stark’s armored suit and worldwide the first vehicle named after a Marvel character.) Another “Ironman” attending, of the steampunk kind, is celebrity guest Thomas Willeford. In a phone interview, Willeford talked about his background. “I grew up in the second- tiniest state in the country, Delaware,” he said. “My grandparents had a big Victorian house, and I loved Victorian science-fiction as a kid. They were mad scientists basically. We would literally blow stuff up in the backyard. I am surprised my brother and I made it through puberty. “Then I was into history, and about 1989, all this literature — that we now call steampunk — came out and all this cool stuff, it was neat. It brought history and science-fiction together, but it wasn’t really popular yet. Then about 2004, I was at an event in England. It was a gothic event. I made this steampunk outfit, a mechanical arm, mechanical eye and a British officer’s uniform and people lost their minds,” Willeford said. From there on, steampunk costume building became part of his business. “They paid me money for it, even better,” Willeford said. “That’s how I started. I own a small company called Brute Force Studios and I make costumes. You want this illusion of shape, form, of beauty and it’s a pretty instant way to do it. “One thing I like about steampunk is, instead of just dressing like that subculture, they have a persona. ‘I’m going to wear my Lord Featherstone outfit with the big mechanical arm.’ There are backstories. People are very imaginative,” Willeford said. Willeford became known as the Steampunk Iron Man at conventions. Asked where his inspiration came from he said, “I thought if I could make the whole suit, that would be so

cool. It took me a month and a half of doing nothing else, all hours a day. I was a huge Iron Man fan. When I built it, I made it just for a certain size, then I gained 10 pounds after I designed it. Darn. I had a panic attack and had to lose 10 pounds to put it on. So I am on a diet now, so I can wear it at the convention (Galacticon). “I have also written two how-to books for steampunk. So I’ll be doing a book signing and answer any questions they have.” Willeford had built a giant robot, 16 feet tall, that appeared in the TV Show “Shipping Wars.” He and his mechanical arm also appeared in an episode of the TV show “Castle,” with lead actor Nathan Fillion as Rick Castle wearing Willeford’s mechanical arm and a steampunk costume. “They did another show in 2015 called ‘Steampunk’d,’” Willeford said. “I was a judge on that show. I have had people talk to me about other shows, some of them I can’t tell you about because I signed contracts — NDAs (non-disclosure agreements). But I can tell you that I’ve been contacted by other shows.” While Willeford has never stayed overnight in Roswell, he has been driving through. “Last year, we drove through Roswell. It was really fun, the whole flying saucer bit. There is a bank with the flying saucer on the side. It’s got some mythology and is fun. I am looking forward to staying there and seeing what it has to offer.” Another guest of honor is local author and historian John LeMay. “I was born here in Roswell and so were my parents, and so was one of my grandparents,” he said. “I am third generation. I wrote my first book when I was 22 and it was a pictorial history of Roswell. I gave a very simple but detailed history of the town and Elvis Fleming (local historian) helped me write it here at the archives building (Historical Society for Southeast New Mexico Archives). That also led to me becoming involved with the Historical Museum and eventually being on their board. I guess you can say, one book always leads into the next book. Because as I was writing ‘Roswell,’ I had all these neat pictures of Dexter, Hagerman and Lake Arthur, which really didn’t fit in the scope of Roswell because that was the title and focus of the book. So that led into the second book. From that, I realized I could do a book on Lincoln County and so, that’s what I mean, that one book always leads to the next book. “I will sell the museum’s history books that I wrote for them. So when you come and want to buy copies of the books at Galacticon, the great news is, you’re going to be supporting the historical museum, and what I will do on the side though, is I have other books. he International UFO Museum and Research Center was organized to inform the public about what has come to be known as “The Roswell Incident.” During the year, the museum (a nonprofit corporation) is dedicated to the collection and preservation of materials and information in written, audio and visual formats that are related to the 1947 Roswell Incident and other unexplained phenomena related to UFO research. The museum endeavors to be the leading information source in history, science and research about UFO events worldwide. The International UFO Museum’s constituents are committed to gathering and disbursing to all interested parties the most qualified and up-to-date information available. During the UFO Festival, the museum opens up its doors, hosting the world’s most renowned experts for the UFO phenomena and theories. In 2017, Mike published his first novel, “Lightbringer,” an X-Files-styled thriller about a NASA-based secret society’s attempt to create a world-wide catastrophic event in order to seize power. In 2018, Mike returned to the world of nonfiction with “Ancient Aliens and JFK: The Race to the Moon and the Kennedy Assassination,” which examines the new Kennedy documents and suggests they point to JFK’s knowledge of the alien presence on Earth as the real reason behind the president’s murder. Bara has

recently starred in an alien investigation reality show for the Discovery networks called “Uncovering Aliens.” Most recently, Bara appeared on NBC/Universal’s SyFy Network on the special “Aliens on the Moon: The Truth Exposed,” alongside NASA astronaut and American hero Buzz Aldrin. The show was based primarily on his 2012 book, “Ancient Aliens on the Moon.” In 2017, Mike appeared in five episodes of “UFOs: The Lost Evidence” on the Discovery networks. Donald R. In the field of UFO studies, he has worked on such classic cases as Roswell, Socorro, Holloman, Levelland and the Lubbock Lights. He has been writing the UFO-related column “Looking Up” for the Roswell Daily Record for 20 years. Burleson and his wife, the writer Mollie Burleson, have lived in Roswell since 1996. Burleson will have two lectures at the IUFOMRC. “UFOs and the Murder of Marilyn Monroe” — This one will be along the lines of the book of the same title, arguing that Monroe was murdered because high government officials were afraid she would disclose classified information she had received from JFK about UFOs.“UFOs and Biohazard Issues,” which explores the idea that due to contact with alien bodily fluids during UFO crash retrievals, a number of

people have died of a fast-incubating virus.

UFO

Continued from Page 5 and Research Center). It would have died with all the witnesses as so many witnesses did take it with them,” Schmitt said. “I was very pleased that Stan’s family — in lieu of flowers or any other gifts — suggested donations to the museum,” Schmitt said. Schmitt dedicated his newest book to Friedman, whom he had asked to write the foreword. “We have the new book because beyond Roswell, the “Roswell Incident,” there was a part two,” he said. “By all the press accounts, by all the eyewitness testimonies, there was something that was recovered. The wreckage, the remains, it was transferred from the Roswell Army Airfield at that time, and people often so wrongly assume it went to Area 51. Well, there was no Area 51 back in 1947. That wouldn’t be for another eight years, so where did it all go? Well, it went to Wright-Patterson (Air Force Base) in Dayton, Ohio, and that’s where they were doing all the reverse engineering of captured armory and weaponry from World War II. For example, if the American Air Force so much as covered a Russian MIG it would go to Wright-Patterson for analyses and testing. So, here was the Roswell material and we would ask, why would they feel the need to send a very conventional weather balloon to Wright-Patterson for testing and analysis? And that is precisely where it all went, to suggest that it was something “Foreign,” to use that word with a capital letter. The new book is about all the people, all the witnesses, all the documentation, all the press accounts describing Wright-Patterson and receiving the Roswell wreckage. In other words, those on the receiving end, those who recovered it and sent it out of Roswell. Now we have chapter two. Those who received it and what were those test results? What did they conclude? Quite clearly they concluded it was out of this world.” New this year is that almost all events take place downtown in walking distance of the International UFO Museum and Research Center, with its panels and speakers; the heart of Main Street with its shops, galleries and mobile vendors is turned into a pedestrian zone up to the Chaves County Courthouse (CCC), where the main stage is located. Galacticon with its workshops, gaming, vendors and the Steampunk Ball with the band Marquis of Vaudeville (Friday night) moved downtown, as well. They will be in the newly renovated Roswell Convention and Civic Center(RCCC). Not even a block north of the RCCC is the Roswell Museum and Art Center (RMAC). The Galacticon SciFi Film Fest movies will be shown here in Bassett Auditorium — the winning films will be shown at Allen Theater’s Galaxy 8 at the Roswell Mall. Adjacent to RMAC is the newly remodeled Planetarium, which will have a variety of high tech laser shows each day (see schedule in the center of this magazine). Also new this year is Roebuck Entertainment’s Spaceport Roswell — a virtual reality event, which is presented by the Roswell Daily Record at 220 N. Main St. Virtual reality will also be happening at Galacticon. MainStreet Roswell has many surprises planned during the day — watch out for a red button. Who knows what will happen if one pushes that button? Tourists and locals can meet aliens from outer space walking the streets of Roswell, or sitting in the shade of the beer garden. The popular Alien Chase Races and the Alien Pet Contest take place in the early morning hours on Saturday and in the afternoon, humanoids can show off their masquerading skills during the annual Alien Costume & Cosplay Contest. The highlight on Saturday night is the UFO Light Parade downtown. From Friday to Sunday, a variety of live music and entertainment is found at the CCC Main Stage and at the stage at Reischman Park, 308 N. Main St. After picking up the UFO Festival “Passport,” at the information booth on the CCC lawn, visitors can look at the different Main Street shops competing for best alien-themed or patriotic window showcase. The Gallery/Main Street Arts, 223 N. Main St., has a UFO Art Contest — winners will be announced on July 5. There are many more locations in Roswell to visit, including museums. The RMAC, which hosts the SciFi Film Fest, has the original Robert H. Goddard workshop with rockets on display. Adjacent to the museum is the Robert H. Goddard Planetarium, which is showing laser shows throughout the festival. Nancy Fleming, director of the Anderson Museum of Contemporary Art, 409 E. College Blvd., said, “We will have a new show and participate in the passport program. Our new exhibit is ‘Transportation and TNT’ and includes hood ornament sculptures and a novelty fireworks display.” Visitors can get a glimpse into Roswell’s past at the Historical Society for Southeast New Mexico Museum, 200 S. Lea Ave. The building north of it hosts its archives, a great source for writers and researchers. A surprise awaits for locals and tourits alike: The Roswell Public Library, 301 N. well,” on July 6 at 2 p.m. Tucker is visiting from the Seattle area. In a phone interview, he said, “I was born in Roswell. I graduated from Roswell High in 1989. It’s kind of a coincidence, that’s the main reason I was originally coming to Roswell in July — it’s my 30th high school reunion. By a lot of dumb luck I happen to have finished my 11th book and it’s the first novel that I’ve written that takes place in Roswell.” The book is well written and includes a mystery, UFOs and mysterious creatures. While it is a fiction, the stories framing the mystery are based on true adventures Tucker and his high school friends had — they gave the permission to use their real first names — while growing up in Roswell. The author compares the story to “Stand by Me” meets “E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial.” The book is exciting and charming, giving a glimpse into the unique small town of Roswell. Events may change due to weather or unforeseeable circumstances. Details and schedule changes are found at roswellfilmcon.com and ufofestivalroswell.com or its social media sites. A message from the organizers: Remember to stay hydrated and use sunscreen — and to take care if you have pets with you, the asphalt can get extremely hot.

Larry Holcombe Holcombe’s introduction into the world of Ufology came in the late 1950s after reading two of Maj. Donald Keyhoe’s books: “Flying Saucers are Real” and “Flying Saucers from Outer Space.” A year later, after watching Keyhoe debate an Air Force officer on the old Armstrong Circle Theater, and seeing Keyhoe being censored when he deviated from the prepared script the Air Force forced on the show’s producers, Holcombe was convinced the Air Force was covering up knowledge of UFOs. Those events started a 50-plus year avocation in the study and research of the UFO phenomenon. In 2006 he took early retirement and started his first novel, “The Great River Disclosure,” a thriller based on the government cover-up of an extraterrestrial presence visiting Earth. His second novel in the Disclosure Trilogy, “Satan’s Angel,” was released this past fall in eBook format. In researching background for the novels, he became intrigued by a 1970s NBC-TV documentary, “UFOS: Past, Present & Future.” The idea of a work of nonfiction took shape. A detailed book proposal was developed and in the fall of 2012, the rights to “The Presidents and UFOs: A Secret History From FDR to Obama.” Holcombe traveled the next year to research the book, which was released 2015. Sony Pictures has optioned the film rights to the book. As of this date ,Larry has done 32 radio interviews and lectured in six states. Frank Kimbler Kimbler is an assistant professor of Earth Science at the New Mexico Military Institute in Roswell and a xeno-archaeologist. He has worked as a professional geologist for almost 30 years and has taught for almost half of that time. He

24

has worked as an oceanographer for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and as a mining engineer for the state of Arizona. He moved to New Mexico in 2009 after accepting a teaching position at NMMI. Shortly after moving to Roswell, he took a keen interest in the story behind the Roswell UFO Incident. His research has resulted in the discovery of a number of physical artifacts from the Roswell UFO debris field area. His research has also been featured on several National Geographic TV programs, the History Channel, and numerous internet talk shows about UFOs. He is dedicated to discovering answers and using good science to prove that we are not alone in the universe. Kimbler brings credibility to the science of ufology by using remote sensing, sophisticated radiation detecting equipment, and electronic metal detectors to search for artifacts. Tom Kirkbride Kirkbride grew up in Southern California, where he was a lifeguard on the beaches of LaJolla — thus his Gamadin saga begins. His five-book series is a thrill-packed, character driven adventure about a couple of surfers saving the Galaxy. In 2012, his entire series was selected for the Renaissance Accelerated Reader program for schools nationwide. This is the ninth year in a row Kirkbride speaks at the Roswell UFO Festival. He also talks about writing to classrooms, writers groups and book clubs all over the country. Kathleen Marden Marden is a bestselling author and award-winning scientifically trained UFO researcher and lecturer. Her educational background in the social sciences has shaped her interest in scientific ufology. She has lectured nationally and internationally and is a frequent guest on radio shows. She is associated with the Mutual UFO Network, as director of experiencer research and the

Edgar Mitchell Foundation for research into extraterrestrial encounters, as a member of its board of directors and consultant to its research subcommittee. Many know her as the niece of Betty and Barney Hill. She researched the Hill’s close encounter and subsequent abduction, leaving no stone unturned, to separate fact from fiction. This led to the publication of her books, with nuclear physicist and scientific ufologist, the late Stanton Friedman, “Captured! The Betty and Barney Hill UFO Experience,” “Science was Wrong,” and “Fact, Fiction, and Flying Saucers” — as well as “The Alien Abduction Files” with Denise Stoner. She has expanded her work to include the investigation of contact with non-human entities, the perplexing phenomena related to it, the history of government involvement in the investigation and study of UFOs and the cover up. Kevin D. Randle Randle is a retired Army lieutenant colonel who served in Vietnam as a helicopter pilot and aircraft commander, accumulating more than 1,100 hours of combat flight time. In 2003, he deployed to Iraq as an intelligence officer. He served on active duty with the Army and later the Air Force. He was a member of the Iowa National Guard on his deployment into the Middle East. Randle is the author of dozens of books about the military. He has also written nonfiction books about UFOs as well as science fiction. He, along with Robert Charles Cornett, might have been the first civilians to have access to the entire Project Blue Book files after they were declassified in 1976. sion and state citations by Massachusetts Gov. Charles D. Baker, Lt. Gov. Karyn E. Polito and the Massachusetts Historical Society. Following this first-of-a-kind entry into the state’s antiquity. Judge Kevin W. Titus of the 30th District Court signed and sealed the records by Gov. Baker and the Historical Society, declaring them uncontested lawful documents. This year, the public will hear of that night. Documents, polygraph tests and witness testimonies will be available, and the radio station report that broadcast the Reed Incident in 1969 will be played. The “incident” has been the subject of several programs and documentaries, as well as the launch of the Discovery Channel’s “Alien Mysteries.” Alejandro Rojas Rojas is director of operations for Open Minds Production, the host for “Open Minds UFO Radio,” editor and contributing writer for OpenMinds.tv, and emcee for the International UFO Congress. For several years, Rojas was the official spokesperson for the Mutual UFO Network as the director of public education. As a UFO and paranormal researcher and journalist, Rojas has spent many hours in the field investigating. Rojas has been interviewed by media organizations around the world. He has been featured on the Travel Channel, SyFy, National Geographic and E! Donald Schmitt Schmitt is the former co-director of the J. Allen Hynek Center for UFO Studies in Chicago where he served as director of special investigations for 10 years. Prior to that time, he was a special investigator for the late J. Allen Hynek and the art director for the International UFO Reporter. He is author of hundreds of articles about UFOs as well as the co-author of five bestselling

books. He is also the author of “Roswell, The Chronological Pictorial.” Schmitt has led and organized the four official archaeological dig projects at the actual Roswell crash/debris field conducted in 1989, 2002, 2006 and 2013. The second effort became the central theme of the highest rated show up to that time in the history of the Sci Fi Channel, “The Roswell Crash: Startling New Evidence.” The basis of his research and consultation has been the theme of many documentaries including “UFO Secret: The Roswell Crash” and two-time British Academy Award-winning producer John Purdie’s “The Roswell Incident.” His greatest achievement was the Golden Globe Best Picture nominated motion picture “Roswell,” that was based on the first book, co-authored with Kevin Randle. He and the late Stanton Friedman served as advisors to the International UFO Museum and Research Center Board of Directors. Derrel Sims Sims is known as “the alien hunter” and has been at the forefront of alien investigation for more than 35 years. From age 4 to 17, he experienced numerous conscious contacts with a malignant alien presence, he says. At the heart of Sims’ work is a proactive search for physical evidence and its forensic analysis. A private investigator and former military policeman, he treats abduction cases like crime scenes. By the early 1980s, he’d begun assembling his groundbreaking collection of alleged alien implants; in 1995, he organized the first public extractions and subsequent analysis of more alleged alien artifacts. Other landmark cases include a “1992 Double Mass Abduction,” and his discovery of sub-dermal alien fluorescence. Trace evidence such as this is currently undergoing DNA testing. He has trained extensively in many disciplines including linguistics, handwriting analysis and

timeline therapy. Yvonne Smith Smith is the author of “CHOSEN: Recollections of UFO Abductions Through Hypnotherapy” and her latest book, “Coronado: The President, The Secret Service and Alien Abductions.” In the last 24 years, Smith has lectured at national and international conferences, various universities and co-lectured with her mentors, Budd Hopkins, John Mack and David Jacobs. Her many television appearances have included the History Channel, MSNBC and Discovery Channel. Her goal is to establish a qualified abduction therapist in all 50 states. Travis Walton Walton is the subject of the Paramount Studios movie, “Fire in the Sky,” based on his book of the same name. On Nov. 5, 1975, a group of loggers in the mountains of northeastern Arizona observed a strange, unusually bright light in the sky. One of the men, Walton, left the safety of their truck to take a closer look. Suddenly, as he walked toward the light, Walton was blasted back by a bolt of mysterious energy. His companions fled in fear. When they reported an encounter with a UFO, the men were suspected of murder. For five days, authorities mounted a massive manhunt in search of Walton — or his body. Then Walton reappeared, disoriented and initially unable to tell the whole story of his terrifying encounter. In “Fire in the Sky,” Walton relates in his own words the best documented account of alien abduction yet recorded, the story of his own harrowing ordeal at the hands of silent captors, his return to a disbelieving world of hostile interrogators, exploitive press and self-styled debunkers. Walton recounts in his speech the struggle to get a fair hearing, and confronts his detractors with a stinging rebuttal.

Continued from Page 7 in town, people know me for Billy the Kid and Roswell history. But what actually brings me in the bulk of my royalties is books on totally different subjects that I sell on Amazon. Most of those are actually film histories. I’ve done books on Godzilla movies, I’ve done books on Spaghetti westerns and just recently, my latest book is all about King Kong movies that they actually never made. That they came up with scenarios for and scripts for but then never went through with them and made them,” LeMay said. One of LeMay’s most popular books at Galacticon is “The Real Cowboys And Aliens.” LeMay is working on a sequel with emphasis on dinosaurs. “The most famous story is in 1890, the Tombstone Epitaph published the story that two ranchers had shot a pterodactyl, which is a kind of

flying dinosaur. That’s a very famous story that they shot this pterodactyl in the desert of Arizona and they killed it. But like all these newspaper articles, there is only one story. There was never a follow-up story, that’s why people doubt it. But there was also never a disclaimer that said our story was a joke,” LeMay said. He has a message for visitors to Roswell. “While you’re here, be sure to check out our other museums. We have, I believe five or six now, and they are all worth looking at. If you run out of things to do, go pick up one of our guide books and you should be able to find out where they all are because they all represent a facet of Roswell’s history or our art culture,” LeMay said. Costume designer and award-winning cosplayer Jessi Arntz is another guest of honor. She was in the Dallas central qualifier for the Fan Expo Master of Cosplay International

Competition and was flown to Canada to compete last year. Her newest costume is called a bone armor. “That is the one I competed in Canada with,” she said. “I’ll be running demos and workshops all weekend, along with selling my wares at the booth (Galacticon).” Another celebrity guest is YouTube star, Mr. Creepy Pasta. He said that Creepy Pasta is a persona telling new urban legends. These stories of terror and dread spring from the minds of many talented people around the internet and are compiled into free-to-listen audiobooks by one specific voice. He has more than 1.2 million subscribers. Mr. Creepy Pasta has produced two Creepy Pasta Collection Anthologies that have broken the top 50 Horror Anthologies on Amazon and The Creepy Pasta Comic Book. Returning as special guest is Star Trek expert and UFO researcher E.J. Wilson. Vendors at Galacticon

include comic book vendors and artists, sci-fi and fantasy art, crafts and collectibles, steampunk art, jewelry and more. The TARDIS of Dr. Who will appear in the RCCC and will be available for photo opportunities. Part of Galacticon is the SciFi Film Fest. This year it will take place just north of the RCCC in the Roswell Museum and Art Center, Bassett Auditorium. Here is a short listing of the movies shown (See schedule in the center of the magazine): “SQUAD LEADER TD-73028 SOLILOQUY” — A Star Wars short film that tackles William Shakespeare’s Soliloquy, from the point of view of a stormtrooper. “CORVUS” — A psychological film about a woman who builds a machine with hypnotic capabilities. “Tik Tok” — Ever wanted to rewind those awkward

moments during a date? This film plays on the idea of being able to capture the moment of a perfect date through a new app, called Tik Tok. “ARA” — Commander Ara Schneck is the last surviving member on board the first piloted flight to Mars after an explosion kills the rest of her crew. Watch as she recounts the steps she took to explore space. “The Tangle” — In the near future, our world becomes interconnected through a system known as the Tangle. What happens when a secret government agency investigates a murder that occurs in a safe room outside the Tangle? “Emergency Alert” — According to the producer, this is not a test, but an actual emergency. Thoughts and prayers are not with you as the Leader leaves you a message. Do you accept? “Real Artists” — Against all odds, Sophia Baker finally lands her dream job interview at the

world-famous Semaphore Animation Studios. She soon learns that not everything is perfect behind closed curtains. “Sophie” — A different style of film showing the life cycle of an android whose sole purpose is companionship. “Due Time” — His daughter has gone missing, and he is now forced to bargain with powerful beings he does not understand. “A Timely Reminder for Time Parter Partners” — Time travel is a tough job. And filling out your timecard is the toughest part. Especially if you’re a parttime Time Parter at Time Parter Partners. “AFTER THE LETHARGY” — A woman, a ranger and a sinister villager travel through a famous hotspot making one of the most extraordinary contacts with extraterrestrials.

his year, downtown Roswell with its main stage at the Chaves County Courthouse and Reischman Park stage, 308 N. Main St., will have from Friday to Sunday a variety of bands and singers — from pop, rock ‘n’ roll to country and anything in between. New this year is the location of Galacticon’s popular Steampunk Ball, which is taking place at the Roswell Convention and Civic Center on Friday night. Marquis of Vaudeville are returning for the ball, bringing new music and favorite tunes. Costumes for the ball are welcomed, but not mandatory. Following is a glimpse into the bands and musicians. For the line-up, see our pullout schedule in the center of this magazine.

According to organizer Zach Apodaca, of these 14 films, four won awards this year. “We will be having an award ceremony at the Galaxy 8 Allen Theatre,” he said. For more information, visit roswellfilmcon.com.

Brandon Bailey Johnson is a classically trained violinist and multi-instrumentalist with a Guinness World Record for “Youngest Professional Music Producer.” Local singer Lexi Rose has been performing since she was in high school choir. She recently performed in Roswell’s theater group Way Way Off-Broadway in its performance of the ABBA musical, “Mamma Mia!” “This is my first time performing at the festival,” she said. “I am going to perform covers, a bunch of songs either by Queen or Meghan Trainor.” The award-winning Latin band Nosotros is a well-established popular group out of Albuquerque. In a phone interview, Dennis Jall talked about the band. “The band first started as a three-piece

guitar trio, it was all-instrumental music with three guitars,” he said. “No vocals and it was Flamenco music based from Spain. It stayed with the Flamenco sound, even when I joined the band in the year 2000. Over the years — mainly by bringing in different musicians as some musicians were leaving — you got another musician who brought in their influences, that has transformed the band. Our two singers right now from Costa Rica, they brought in a lot of salsa influence, our bass player has hip-hop influence, and our guitar player has a lot of rock and heavy metal background. One player has strong jazz backgrounds.” Formed in Albuquerque, Red Light Cameras plays a mix of soulful rock and garage pop. The group has been playing since 2010. Their debut, self-titled album was recorded at ¿Que? Studio in Albuquerque and released in October 2011, garnering them Local

iQ’s Best Band in Albuquerque. The band has a deep catalogue of catchy original tunes and their live shows are like no other. The southern rock band Drugstore Gypsies out of Austin, Texas, say that they explore what it means to be an impetuous young American male living life to the fullest in the heart of the South. Tales of humorous conquest blend into battles with burgeoning demons. Stories of love and betrayal lay bare the band’s undeniable maturity as writers, hidden just beneath a convincing veneer of youth and bravado. Marquis of Vaudeville’s musical menagerie breaks through the monotony and mundane with a rock opera soundscape of angst-ridden anthems, devilishly beguiling ballads, and waltzes through Wonderland which tug at the heartstrings of today’s youth. They are widely known for their own extravagant Vaudeville-inspired sold-out specta -

cles such as A Clockwork Wonderland, Gadgets & Gobstoppers, Unlucky 13, and the show that shares the grandiose title of their ambitious debut album, The Great Promenade of Fools & Ghosts.

M

onumentally productive and insightful UFO researcher Stanton Friedman passed away suddenly on Monday, May 13, several weeks short of his 85th birthday, at a Toronto airport on his way home from giving a UFO lecture in Ohio — the sort of thing he loved doing most. When he left us, he left a void in the UFO research community that will be forever hard to fill, but he left us something else as well: a critically important tradition, and that tradition is the mindset of pursuing the truth about unidentified flying objects using the methods and logic of science. The world of UFOs has always been viewed in a lot of different ways. Just mention UFOs in some circles and the response will be eyes rolling, heads shaking

Stanton Friedman’s UFO Legacy: scientific pursuit of truth

and derisive laughter — as if the subject were the most preposterous thing imaginable. But mention UFOs to some other people and the response will be a gathering of seriousness in their faces and as likely as not, a recital of strange sighting experiences they themselves have had. The whole subject has not always been taken seriously, for sure. Back when most cities and towns had old-fashioned walk-in bookstores, one often saw books on UFOs shelved alongside books on such subjects as Tarot card reading, fortune telling, magic and witchcraft. Clearly, the organizational mentality behind such juxtapositions included a perception on the part of bookstore managers that UFO stories were essentially science fiction at best, blatant

nonsense at worst. Indeed those of us who investigate sighting reports and interview witnesses have long noted that the most outstanding reason why people are reluctant to talk about their sighting experiences is not fear of government reprisal, but rather fear of ridicule. We sometimes first have to convince witnesses that we’re not going to laugh at them before we can get them to open up about what they have seen. But regardless of what some people might tell you, the subject of UFOs deserves to be taken deadly seriously. It ought to tell diehard skeptics something to know that Stan Friedman — who around 1967 began to dedicate his life to the field of UFO studies — was by professional training a nuclear physicist. Far from taking

a dim view of the subject of UFOs through the eyes of a scientist, he developed a lifelong fascination with them and pursued the truth about them relentlessly. Try to imagine telling a nuclear physicist that he ought to develop a serious interest in Tarot card reading or some other such form of mysticism, and see how far you get. The response would most often be a snort of contempt. Try telling the same nuclear physicist that it makes sense to spend time understanding quantum mechanics, and your physicist will take the matter seriously. So it was with Stan Friedman’s becoming interested in UFOs. His work in that field was not only profound and methodical but also pioneering. It was Friedman who first located and interviewed

Jesse Marcel, who had been the intelligence officer for the 509th Bomb Group at Roswell Army Air Field in 1947 when the now-famous Roswell UFO crash and retrieval occurred. Had Friedman not gotten Marcel to talk, to this day we still would probably not know anything extraordinary had ever happened at Roswell. There would be no UFO Festival, no UFO-centered tourism, no knowledge of the matter whatever, aside from a few individuals who had been in the know from the outset but had been enjoined to keep quiet. Indeed, I have always thought that one particular point in the Marcel story illustrates, as well as anything could, the importance of employing clear logic to deal with all this. Stan Friedman’s whole legacy to

UFOlogy

Looking Up

By Donald Burleson

us consists of a rock-solid knowledge that science is the best way to come to know anything, and that the methodologies of science require scrupulous logic. We UFO investigators, pursuing the truth, try to adhere to that devotion to logic; government secret keepers, concealing the truth, sometimes do not. Here’s the example I had in mind. On July 8, 1947, the Tuesday following the July 4 weekend and the UFO crash, Maj. Jesse Marcel was directed to pack up a box of metallic debris recovered from the crash site and bring it to 8th Air Force headquarters in Fort Worth, Texas, specifically to the office of Gen. Roger Ramey. Arriving at the general’s office, Maj. Marcel found himself in the see

Legacy

Continued from Page 30 midst of a carefully orchestrated dog-and-pony show for the press, the beginnings of a massive cover-up. Specifically, Gen. Ramey had the major’s debris replaced with some weather balloon debris, spread upon the floor, and the press were called in, after Ramey forcefully told Maj. Marcel just to keep his mouth shut and let the general do the talking. In the course of parading the balloon debris before the reporters, Gen. Ramey remarked to them that it was rather surprising that Maj. Marcel, in his official position at Roswell, didn’t recognize weather balloon debris when he saw it. Well, that was just about the most egregious logical error the general could have made. The obvious truth was, Maj. Marcel, of course, would indeed have recognized weather balloon debris, which is precisely why the stuff scattered on Gen. Ramey’s office floor could

not have been what Marcel had really examined over that eventful weekend. (Unfortunately, the reporters apparently didn’t figure this out at the time.) In the general’s position, as with his superiors who had to put together a cover story in a hurry, the simple fact is that there wasn’t time to think things through more carefully and get them straight, in order to more sustainably script the cover-up that was taking form. Typically, cover-ups get done hastily, and there is virtually always something wrong with their logic. The rest of us have essentially forever to untangle and expose that bad logic. Maybe Gen. Ramey needed a scientist like Stan Friedman, trained in the careful use of the mind, to help him get it right. As it was, the general committed a memorable gaffe. You see, scientists can’t afford to be careless. Try working as a nuclear phys-

icist and being muddled or sloppy in the way you arrange your thinking. But no, don’t try it. The results could be lethal. Science, as Stan Friedman could always eloquently explain, proceeds by gathering and examining evidence and forming hypotheses that best seem to account for the evidence, and this process is ongoing. Anybody of scientific knowledge is a formative work in progress, an incomplete but growing mass of understanding that stands ready to explain things as they can best be explained at the time, but also ready to submit to revision when the need arises, that is, when more evidence or better-understood evidence appears. The field of UFO studies is no different. We may never know all the truth about it, but the important thing is to go about trying to arrive at that truth in the most promising possible ways, and Stan Friedman’s meticulous

work habits as a scientist have gone a long way toward showing us what those most promising approaches are. Just in the area of government document authentication alone, his is a shining example. He used to spend years using every kind of close, subtle scrutiny imaginable to authenticate a document. The subject of UFOs is not, or at least should not be, a religion, where you either accept it on faith or you don’t. Rather, like all other truly scientific enterprises, it’s a tentative and partial grasp of some larger truth that beckons from around a farther corner. Without evidence, you are properly skeptical, but when evidence arrives, you take it seriously, wherever it leads. Stanton Friedman spent his life illustrating that principle. We must carry on.
