It’s time to celebrate the ‘crash’
25th annual UFO Festival, first MainStreet Roswell AlienFest and UFO Museum UFOlogist Invasion unite Roswell By Christina Stock Vision Editor
T
here is a new energy in Roswell, the UFO Festival is back and hundreds of organizers, businesses and volunteers have been working on making the events unforgettable for locals and tourists alike. From July 1 to 4 there will be a multitude of events happening, including a patriotic Independence Day celebration. The UFO festival draws thousands of visitors from all over the world to Roswell. Last year would have been the 25th anniversary of the festival, but due to the pandemic it had to be postponed.
It is fitting that the UFO Festival is the first city-wide festival and one of the first in New Mexico — after all, Roswell is celebrating the news that we may not be alone, that there was a crash of a “flying saucer” on a stormy day before the Fourth of July weekend in 1947. The pandemic showed everybody that we are not alone — not alone in the U.S. or around the world. Racing towards a solution to end the pandemic, COVID-19 united scientists and countries. Thinking back on the empty streets of the largest metropolises in the world,

Back then, a press release came from the intelligence office of the 509th Bombardment group, stationed in Roswell. well Daily Record, July 8, 1947 — and rebuffed as being a weather balloon the very next day — it could have been easily forgotten if it weren’t for researchers of the UFO phenomenon. Those include the late Stanton Friedman (the nuclear physicist, author and researcher who died in May 2019) and Donald Schmitt, who will be one of the speakers at the International UFO Museum and Research Center (IUFOMRC). Out of the interest and research, the IUFOMRC came to be. The museum was the one that started having speakers come see Crash on page 20

re we alone? That is the question. Anybody who has ever heard about UFOs, the 1947 “Roswell Incident,” or is simply curious about the latest releases by the government will be able to listen to the world’s experts on the subject at the UFO Museum Ufologist Invasion and ask their own questions. And, the newly renovated and upgraded International UFO Museum and Research Center (IUFOMRC) offers many new surprises as well. One of the original researchers of the “Roswell Incident” and current advisor to the museum’s board of directors is Donald

Schmitt. He visits the museum several times a year. Schmitt said that he was very impressed with the upgrades and changes. Among the new fixtures in the museum are electronic tablets. “You just touch the screen and then you hear the testimony, the witnesses and other information regarding different aspects (of the alleged UFO crash outside of Roswell). The fact that the (UFO) debris was out there for days before it was even reported. What is crucial about that, nothing was reported missing. They (the military) weren’t looking for anything. He will be one of the speakers at the UFO Museum UFOlogist Invasion. high desert area — and I have flown in small planes and helicopters over there — once you are airborne, you can see for 50 miles. Again, just very demonstrative of the fact, nobody was looking for anything. They weren’t testing anything. It was a holiday, the Fourth of July weekend, so the point being, whose was it? The argument was that it’s that top secret balloon. First of all, the balloon was not top secret, the project was. The balloon material was not, not for a second. And again, if they were so concerned finding it, they would have found it long before the rancher did. Because it was the wide-open high desert. That’s the science. “Come to New Mexico. The fact that you see something that is only a couple of miles away doesn’t mean it was. You had to go over a ridge, maybe fence lines, maybe water tanks and windmills, that type of things.” Schmitt is one of the speakers at the museum. He is going to talk about different aspects and also about the International Coalition on Extra-Terrestrial Research that was founded in May with scientists and researchers from 27 countries. Schmitt is the North American representative, he said. The organization wants to push governments to inform the public about UFO sightings and to reveal the truth. “It’s never happened before. Eventually we will be 50 countries and then we’ll put real pressure on the U.S. government,” he said. Schmitt said that he is not comfortable with the recent releases by the Military. “I am concerned that what this may be their way of announcing the level or the extent of technology of Space Force because each branch of
the Military is in competition with each other. “It’s either going to come down to disclosure with a small ‘d,’” Schmitt said. “There is something out there, we still don’t know what it is, but we’re working on it. We need more time. We’ll report back to you next year and then the next year and next year — it gets them off the hook and they acknowledge there is something there — or it’s going to be something with Space Force. Look at the message it sends to the Russians and Chinese.” Schmitt hopes that tourists and locals will visit the IUFOMRC to see the upgrades for themselves. “Come back and see us. It’s a lot of new displays, updated, upgraded, new information, bright, colorful, it is very well done. We are very pleased with it,” he said. Dr. Donald Burleson has been part of the IUFOMRC circle of speakers for many years. He is a certified UFO field investigator, research consultant, and New Mexico state director for MUFON, the Mutual UFO Network. His column, “Looking Up,” has been part of the Roswell Daily Record and its VISION entertainment and event section since 1999. Burleson is a speaker at this year’s UFO Museum Ufologist Invasion. Asked why their is no clear release by the military about the UFO phenomena, Burleson said, “The public can’t handle it — you see this excuse even in movies. Well, we can’t tell the public the truth because it would cause panic. If this may be true it’s hard to tell, I’ve always thought if we all of a sudden had a little grey alien on ‘Good Mornsee

he Robert H. Goddard Planetarium has been a favorite for visitors and locals during the UFO Festivals throughout the years. Planetarium coordinator Jeremy Howe is looking forward to presenting the state-of-the-art, full-dome digital theater system this year again. Asked what is new, Howe said, “That’s a fun question, and I am excited to answer it. I’ve been waiting for this to come about
— and it’s been a long time coming but it’s finally here. I have three new laser shows. We have the one that I am most excited for, ‘Laser Queen’, ‘Laser Grateful Dead’ and ‘Laser Elton John (Rocket Man).’ Projected onto the dome, it’ll be a lot of fun.” It is an exiting era for stargazers. “There is certainly no end to the amazing happening in space on almost a weekly basis,” Howe said. “There is some new satellite
going up; the amazing Elon Musk and his vision and push for Mars colonization and all these things. Those are things that I like to keep the public updated about with the Space is Awesome video snippets I speak on. (Howe’s video clips are shown on the Facebook page of the Roswell Museum and Art Center. The planetarium is attached to the museum and part of it.) “We have been closed since March 2020. So my film library will feel like a new film library because everybody has forgotten the shows that I played. They’re expensive to get in the first place. It will be fun going through the process of reopening, and a little introduction and a great space film followed by Constellation Star Show where I speak about what stars are out, what constellations are out, what planets are out. Things you can see and if you come down to the planetarium, it’s usually about an hour-long program.” The space film Howe mentioned is called “Destination Mars.” Laser shows that will be shown during the UFO Festival at the planetarium, as submitted:

or the first time since the pandemic shut Roswell down and silenced musicians far and wide, musicians will perform live and in front an audience during the 25th Roswell UFO Festival and the first MainStreet AlienFest. Nobody could be happier than Chevel Shepherd to be on stage again. Shepherd is from New Mexico and is known for winning the 15th season of the TV show “The Voice,” under the guidance of her coach Kelly Clarkson. She is the headliner for the UFO Festival and will perform at its main
event the evening of July 3. In a phone interview, Shepherd said, “I am so excited. I’ve never been to Roswell before, it’s going to be my first time.” Asked what her fans can expect to hear, Shepherd said, “I have quite a few songs that I am going to be playing. Some new originals that haven’t been heard before ever. And then the one from my EP that has just been released. There’s a lot of variety in there, a bunch of originals and some of my favorite cover songs I like to do.” Now that restrictions due to COVID-19

have been relaxed in New Mexico and other states, Shepherd said that her concert plans are picking up and that she is getting busier and busier. “I am so excited to finally get back out there and perform in front of people, safely of course. I am so excited that everything is slowly starting to get back to normal. It’s so exciting and I can’t wait to see how everything progresses from here,” she said. Shepherd said that after the UFO Festival, she has shows lined up for the rest of the year. “I don’t take a break during the summer. I usually am busy all year round. But of course, 2020 was different. I am just so excited to perform live in Roswell and to meet everyone and maybe see an alien or something,” she said and chuckled. Shepherd said that she can’t wait to watch the band that will be the winner of Battle of the Bands, because the winners will open for her. Gina Montague is a director and actor at the Roswell Community Little Theatre (RCLT). RCLT is providing the venue for the UFO Festival’s Battle of the Bands. Bands auditioned live or online and out of all who auditioned, four were selected to compete against each other. The public, ticket holders to the event, will vote for the winner. The bands competing are: Eternal Vernal The band Eternal Vernal is based in Elephant Butte, New Mexico. They are true to form, considering their music genre in the stargaze and space category. L25 L25 is based in the Dallas, Texas area. Its music can’t be put in a box, but there is a love of music as the foundation. Experimentation with styles and sound is part of this electro/pop band. Matthew Palmer Band Matthew Palmer is well known in the community, having performed for years at venues, festivals and during the pandemic online. His newly formed band includes Brady Chambers and Donny Simmons. They entered the competition as a blues and rock band. Sycamore Flood The Roswell band Sycamore Flood has been practicing two to three times per week. According to their Bandmix website, the band plays classic rock, country rock and rocking country. The Battle of the Bands winner is not the only one opening for Shepherd. Second to open is the band Straight Tequila Night (STN). The band’s manager Eric White wrote in an email, “Straight Tequila Night is North Texas’ best ’90s country tribute
band. From Garth Brooks and George Strait to Tim McGraw and Brooks & Dunn, they play all the songs you love from ’90s country radio, and some you forgot you love! (The band) started ‘just for fun’ in 2012 by a group of friends and co-workers at Granada Theater in Dallas, Texas. They went on to be recognized as one of the best country cover bands in Dallas Fort Worth by D Magazine, The Dallas Observer, and thousands of people all over Texas and beyond who’ve seen their show over the years. Though this was the first time these musicians all played together, there’s about 80 years of combined band experience between them. Known for their energetic renditions of these classic songs, and their engaging and often humorous performances, STN never fails to get the boots scootin’!” MainStreet Roswell’s first AlienFest has a large variety of musicians performing free of charge downtown at the Chaves County Courthouse. From reggae to Americana, folk to rock, live music has returned. Following are some of the musicians — a full daily schedule with dates and times of performance is in the center of the VISION Magazine. New Mexico’s own 44th Army Band, “Green Chile” rock band The “Green Chile” rock band will perform at the first AlienFest at the Chaves County Courthouse. The band is part of the 44th Army Band — New Mexico’s own Army National Guard Band and the state’s musical military ambassador. The 44th Army Band represents the 93rd Troop Command, the New Mexico adjutant general and the governor of New Mexico. The band served during significant periods of the nation’s history, most notably during World War II as the 200th Coast Artillery Band. On April 9, 1942, the band was surrendered to the Japanese and forced to march in Corregidor and on the Bataan Peninsula, thus earning their nickname “The Battling Bastards of Bataan.” The band was deactivated in the 1960s and remained inactive until the late 1970s when it was re-activated as the 44th Army Band. In 2011, the band deployed a team to Kosovo, where they performed over 60 missions in five months. Today, the 44th Army Band performs in support of military, civic and diplomatic events across the state of New Mexico. Next to the “Green Chile” rock band, the band currently consists of the “44th Army Band Jazz Orchestra,” a 1940s-style big band; “Breaking Brass” brass band; “Mariachi Adelante,” a traditional mariachi ensemble; “44th Jazz Collective,” a small jazz combo; “44th Saxes,” a saxophone quintet and “Zia Winds” wind quintet. see

A
t least one new downtown store — as well as a wide range of shopping, eating and entertainment options — will greet visitors to Roswell’s downtown area when the UFO Festival and AlienFest occur the first weekend in July. Businesses are preparing for crowds, and some shop owners and managers said they are looking forward to the first community-wide event since April 2020 when the coronavirus pandemic hit the state. “We’ve been stocking up on lots of alien things,” said Camryn Hennington, owner of She’s A Dandy clothing and accessories store at 302 N. Main Street. “We look forward to having all the visitors in town. We are ready to see our town busy again.” Hennington and other business owners also talked about some of their individual and collaborative efforts to bring shoppers to their doors and the downtown area, given that some of the city-sponsored UFO Festival will occur in locations miles from their storefronts. They palan balloons, chalk drawings, window art, photo ops, signs — or, in the case of a local restaurant, a serape-draped alien figure — outside
their doors. Some vendors also will have booths at UFO Festival locations in other parts of the city. The AlienFest coordinated by MainStreet Roswell is also a major part of the downtown business promotion. The organization will have a booth at the downtown Chaves County Courthouse at 400 N. Main St. and is coordinating many events and activities. That includes its “passport program.” Visitors can find “scavenger hunt” items inside 47 participating businesses. Visitors will earn entries for prize drawings, including a $500 cash prize, for each item they find. They can also turn in passports to receive AlienFest memorabilia. “We want locals and tourists to check out what we have going on for that weekend on the courthouse lawn,” said MainStreet Roswell Executive Director Marie Manning. “Shop local, support small businesses and keep our downtown district vibrant.” Whether visitors are interested in entertainment, education, fine art, food, art or souvenirs, local downtown businesses have a lot to offer. see Shop on page 26

In 1994, the movie “Roswell,” starring Kyle McLachlen and Martin Sheen, brought the “Roswell Incident” to the public. The mystery remains though new evidence and new generations of researchers who are continuing to hunt for truth. By the time the UFO VISION Magazine is published, there may be even more revelations.
This year too, the public can look forward to listening to researchers at the IUFOMRC, which kicks off the UFO Museum UFOlogist Invasion on July 1. Most researchers do not expect any real news from the government. Air Force veteran and UFO researcher Tom Carey said in a phone interview, “The release three years ago by Luis Elizondo of this Navy footage of that video of that flying saucer off the coast of California and then another one 10 years later, off the East Coast, that has had a profound effect. Even the Department of Defense and the Department of the Navy had to admit that the video was real. It was not something that was cooked up on your computer. “They admitted that this UFO was real, so in effect it took the place of the UFO landing on the White House lawn. The reaction, the video has been seen around the world and it has been authenticated essentially by the US government, the Department of Defense. Everybody is looking forward to the report next month that is supposed to go to the US Senate of what the Defense Department has on UFOs. The question is, are they going to confirm UFOs are real or are they going to water it down and obfuscate it?” Carey will be one of the speakers at the UFOlogist Invasion. Entertainment What is a festival without fun and entertainment? The pull-out schedule in the center of this magazine will make it easier to choose. Each of the main venues are on the map following the schedule. Of course, there may be last-minute

The Roswell Daily Record is sponsoring Spaceport Roswell, part of the AlienFest downtown. The virtual reality experience sends travelers on epic adventures through time and space. Jacob Roebuck is the captain (owner) of the high-tech virtual reality venue. In an email he wrote, “We are offering the following journeys: “‘1947’ — An alien ship inspecting Earth experiences a malfunction, sending their spacecraft crashing into the deserts of New Mexico. Experience the Roswell Incident like you never have before — from the perspective of the aliens who caused it. “‘Apollo 11’ — On July 16, 1969, three men rocketed into space on board a Saturn V — the largest rocket ever built. Their destination is 238,900 miles away — Tranquility Base. Join Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins on their historic journey to be the first people to set foot on the moon. “We are open 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday. Due to high demand we recommend making reservations to avoid waits,” Roebuck wrote. For more infor-
mation, visit spaceportroswellnm.com. First MainStreet Roswell AlienFest This year, MainStreet Roswell is having its first AlienFest at the Chaves County Courthouse where all entertainment is free of charge, thanks to the sponsors and businesses that are part of MainStreet Roswell. There will be live music from country to folk, Americana to rock. Vicki Burress is welcoming kids and adults at the Pollinator Party tent of the AlienFest. The former teacher has an associate’s degree in biology and a passion for all kinds of insects, specifically raising lady bugs — feeding them has been a community effort with friends and neighbors providing aphids for the shiny bugs. Asked “who” will be at her Pollinator Party, Burress said, “I will have my 450+ insect collection there, different butterfly caterpillars, bat display, bee display and hummingbird display. Each of these will have fun facts about them. I will have a video loop of Jim’s videos as well as a few other YouTube videos. (Jim Burress is the husband of Vicki Burress and see

Continued from Page 6 ing, America’ one morning, I think a lot of people will say, it’s about time. Some people would react badly. The main reason I think we’re not getting a huge outpouring or disclosure, because there is just too much information that they have. I mean, the Black Vault people, John Greenewald (Jr.), they’ve gotten millions and millions of documents released already and the totality of what the government actually has, who knows? A hundred million pages, maybe, it may be the size of the Library of Congress.” The Black Vault is a document archive begun in 1996 by John Greenewald, Jr. The privately run online repository contains declassified government documents, videos and photos that were obtained through the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) or through other means of accessing U.S. government public information. At press time, the Black Vault contained a 2,462,894 document page count alone. Asked about the recent activity and alleged UFO sightings, Burleson said, “I can tell you from the MUFON perspective — a lot of them are mundane, they turn out to be the border blimp. (Border patrol surveillance blimps were part of the Border Patrol’s aerostat program in Texas’ Rio Grande Valley and are used by the
Department of Homeland Security at Fort Huachuca, Arizona, as reported by the Herald Review on Feb. 2021, updated May 5, 2021.) “It’s ultimately only 3% or 4% of sightings that are anomalous,” Burleson said. “That’s still a huge number of sightings. One anomalous object in the sky is remarkable when you think about it.” “Sometimes it really is a weather balloon. The thing we do get reported a lot is the SpaceX Starlink satellites. Typically, it’s a string of sometimes a couple of dozen satellites and they’re kind of in a row and they’re not evenly spaced and they’re all moving in the same direction. They’re pretty striking looking, almost alarming to look at when you don’t know what you’re looking at. We get those reported probably once a week. When somebody reports them, we have websites we can use that tell you exactly when you are in this place, longitude and latitude, you saw them at 9:15 p.m. and so forth, and you are looking in a certain direction. They can tell you if they were there or not. Very often we can identify that. It’s one of those false flags we get from time to time.” Asked what he will talk about during the UFO Museum UFOlogist Invasion, Burleson said, “I am going to talk about bio hazard issues,
connected with UFO retrievals mainly. We have had people actually injured, even when the UFO didn’t land. Betty Cash is a great example. She died of radiation poisoning.” Cash was one of three people that included Vickie Landrum and Landrum’s seven-year-old grandson, who encountered Dec. 29, 1980 a huge diamond-shaped flying object while driving through the southern tip of the east Texas piney woods, north of Houston. When they saw the object, the adults stepped out of their vehicle. Encountering an intense heat, they got back into the car when helicopters appeared, surrounding the unknown craft. There had been other witnesses who saw the incident as well, just from further away. Cash was later diagnosed by her physician, Dr. Brian McClelland, as having radiation poisoning, Landrum and the child were diagnosed with a milder case of radiation. Suffering the rest of her life with open sores, Cash died Dec. 29, 1998. The UFO Museum’s UFOlogist Invasion includes following speakers. time. Members of Barely Breathing have played with many talented musicians over the years, opening for well-known signed artists and even touring with artists such as Toby Keith. “With all of their different combined backgrounds they are a diverse sound of rock, blues, country, and even a growl of metal on occasion. They are currently working on their first album and will hopefully be in the studio before the end of the year.” Ben Guihan Ben Guihan describes himself as a visual songwriter, portraying surreal images and characters that come to life in cinematic verses, matched with a colorful guitar style rooted in traditional folk. Guihan grew up in Vermont; he spent some time in Boston busking around Harvard Square, then made his way down to Providence, Rhode Island. With Providence as a home base, Guihan spent several winters traveling the country in a custom built wooden camper on his ‘94 Ford Ranger. Ben would craft songs as he went, and made a home-recorded album with good friend Tom Keohane, which was released to coincide with his 2018 tour. Guihan played coffee houses, saloons, galleries and book shops throughout the south,
west and coastal California, and eventually relocated to the high desert of Taos, which he now calls home. Ben’s first studio album is titled “Mise-en-scène” and was recorded in Connecticut at Dirt Floor Recording and Production in late February 2020. The album was recorded in four days, but within just a few short weeks of finishing the sessions all plans for the coming year were put on hold for obvious reasons. As of now, there have been three singles released and Miseen-scène is scheduled for limited vinyl release in summer of 2021. In a phone interview Guihan talked about his music and life. “Folk music is the kind of music that I feel most at home with,” he said. “But I also really like surreal poetry and poets like Arthur Rambo and Jack Kerlach, Alan Ginsburg, Gregory Korso, so I took my writing inspirations from writers like that and my music inspiration from folk.” Asked why he moved to New Mexico, Guihan said it was actually him visiting Roswell that caused the move. “When I was traveling around, Roswell was one of the spots I played in, Stellar Coffee, and that was one of my first stops of my tour that year and I really fell in love with New Mexico. For more information, visit Guihan’s on Instagram @benguihan. Nova Rush Visitors and locals who have attended the festivals in Roswell may recognize the singer and songwriter Nova Rush. Last year would have been her fifth year performing at the UFO Festival, if it hadn’t been for the pandemic putting everything on hiatus. “First I played at Stellar (Coffee Shop) and then at Reischman Park (downtown Roswell). The year before last, I played on the main stage, and this year I am going to play on the main stage (of the first AlienFest) again,” she said. Asked what she enjoys most, Nova Rush said, “I am from here, so I get to see
a bunch of my friends who play the festival as well. You meet all kinds of different people. I made friends in Albuquerque; it is a great way to connect with people, to network as well and represent your community.” “There (UFO Festival and AlienFest) are going to be a lot of people. It’s going to be really busy because it’s the first festival they had. I think that’s going to be a big hit.” Asked how she would describe her music for those who do not know her, Nova Rush said, “My music is basically neo-soul indie, in a sense, it is more soulful but more chill. It’s not so indie rock, but more ambient. More like an experience. I make people think a lot. It’s really good ambience. Nova Rush is active on YouTube and social media such as Facebook and Instagram. Terri Sunflower Terri Sunflower is relatively new to the New Mexico music scene, having concentrated on her career as a registered nurse. “I had a 30-year nursing career and grew some kids and a
couple of marriages. I came back to it (music) later,” she said. “I think I was probably 48 when I started singing with some friends. “I call myself a folk singer, but I am hard to pigeonhole that way,” Sunflower said. Indeed, her songs could fit in a variety of genres, including Americana, folk, blue grass and even a hint of soul. Asked how she finds inspiration, Sunflower said, “Stories are most important. So I don’t really care how the music comes out as long as we’re telling stories. Come listen to me, and I hope you’re moved, inspired, laugh and maybe even cry.” Matthew Palmer Matthew Palmer is wellknown in the community, having performed at festivals, in restaurants and coffee shops. “Other than 2020 with COVID, I’ve performed at the UFO Fest or some aspect of the UFO Fest for eight or nine years now. I also have small coloring books that I will be handing out to children.” The AlienFest information booth is handing out passports for a fun scavenger hunt that will lead participants to the ins and outs of downtown, including the Historical Society for Southeast New Mexico Museum (you have not heard that from us — it’s a secret). After the passport is checked off, return to the booth to pick up your prizes. The AlienFest will have have kids’ crafts and alien hat making, and volunteers from Galacticon — Roswell’s version of comic con — will be in charge of games. The businesses downtown are participating with a variety of entertainment.
The Gallery/Main Street Arts is just a short walk away on 223 N. Main St. They will be handing out USA flags and there will be free art projects for kids, face painting and alien souvenirs — while supplies last. While being there check out the work of more than 25 artists exhibiting in the gallery. Those who have been to Roswell’s UFO Festival before may ask, what about Galacticon and the Roswell SciFi Film Fest? Those usually take place at the same time as the festival, but this year, have been moved to fall, dates are already set: Oct. 23 to 24 — a great excuse to return to Roswell. However, the Galacticon team members are experts in cosplay and costumes and are organizing the popular costume contest on Friday evening for the AlienFest. Galacticon organizer Elaine Mayfield said that the contest now has three categories: Youth, adult and group. “There are four prizes for each category,” she said. “Third place is $25, second place $50, first place $100 and best of show $200. That is funded by the UFO Museum. Master of ceremony is local steampunk member Peter Powell. We certainly appreciate our sponsors.” Galacticon has a booth at the courthouse

Mayfield is also a member of the local Rio Pecos Kennel Club. “The Alien Pet Costume Contest is co-sponsored by the Rio Pecos Kennel Club and the Cielo Grande Veterinary Center,” Mayfield said. “They have helped fund the prizes. We always have money prizes. The pets have as third place $25, second place $50, first place $100 and best of show $200. They’ve done it several years now. Laney Wilkins from the (Rio Pecos) kennel club is in charge of that particular thing and I am doing the MCing. It has been a lot of fun, very popular. This year, we just made one division: Pets.” According to Mayfield, the best chance to win a prize as human or as pet-handler
is to show creativity when creating one’s costume and “staying in character” on stage. To fill out the entry form for either AlienFest Pet or People Costume contest, visit MainStreet Roswell’s AlienFest website at ufofestivalroswell.com. Main St. called Alien Native, a joint effort of two businesses, First Thought Gift Shop and New Mexico Impressions. One of the owners, Dominic Gomez, said the gift shop and art gallery includes hand-made alien souvenirs, hand-crafted wooden carvings and Gomez’s art, some of which has alien themes. Many other stores in the downtown area specialize in gift items or souvenirs. They include Finishing Touches, Lava2Shop, Ancient of Days, Hangar 209, the Farm House on Second and the booths inside the Stardust Antique, Arts and Artifacts collective. Those that focus on UFO and extraterrestrial themes include Roswell Landing, Invasion Station, Alien Invasion and Alien Zone. People seeking a bit of the esoteric can stop by Eclectic Treasurez and Hekate’s Metaphysical Gift Shop. MainStreet Arts has jewelry, paintings, photographs and many other artistic works, many made by local artists. Strange History From Roswell And Beyond
The ‘little green man’ of Texas part 1
By John LeMay Author and historian
T
exas was apparently the place for little humanoids falling out of the sky during the turn of the 19th century. While many people today are aware of the reported 1897 UFO crash of Aurora, Texas, where an alien was said to have met his demise, fewer are aware of another similar case in 1913. In January of 1978, a man named Lawrence Jones wrote a letter to the J. Allen Hynek Center for UFO Studies (CUFOS) in Chicago. Jones claimed that in the month of May in either the year 1913 or 1914, his grandfather, Silbie Latham, had witnessed the death of a strange humanoid creature. Jones wrote
in his letter, “My grandfather has a most solid reputation for truth and honesty but has never told of this because of fear of ridicule ... He has agreed to tell this only after much prompting and encouragement from me, his history-oriented grandson. He would take a polygraph or be hypnotized or whatever you need. There is no question in my mind that he is telling the truth.” Another reason that Latham didn’t come forward with his story would have been due to the times. Back in 1913, the idea of aliens, let alone descriptions of them, had yet to seep into the public consciousness. But by the 1970s, when interest in the paranormal and UFOs reached
new heights, the idea of an alien sighting didn’t seem quite so strange anymore. Upon reception of Jones’ letter, the Center for UFO Studies set up an interview between Latham, who was then 77 years old and Larry Sessions of the Museum of Natural History of Fort Worth. The interview took place in April of 1978. During the meeting, Latham recalled his boyhood experience on a farm 2.5 miles away from Farmersville, Texas — the spot of an airship sighting in 1897, by the way. Latham’s encounter with the strange creature took place in either the year 1913 or 1914. He was out chopping cotton with
his two brothers, Sid and Clyde, when they suddenly heard their dogs begin howling as if in distress. As the howling went on for some time, Clyde said, “Let’s see what’s going on with the dogs. They seem quite shaken.” Clyde arrived at the spot first, which was about 60 to 75 feet away on the other side of a picket fence. He was the first to see the strange sight, and as such called for his brothers to hurry and go look. “Boys, come look! It’s a little man!” he shouted at the site where the dogs had cornered a small, humanoid figure, about eighteen inches tall. Latham told Sessions that the creature looked like “he was sitting on something.” Latham
continued that, “He was looking toward the north. He was no more than 18 inches high and kind of a dark green color. He was the same smooth color all over. He didn’t seem to have any shoes on, but I don’t really remember his feet. His arms were hanging down just beside him, like they [grew] down the side of him. He had on a kind of hat that reminded me of a Mexican hat. It was a little round hat that looked like it was built onto him. He didn’t have on any clothes.” The second part of John LeMay’s story will be published in the Sunday edition of the Roswell Daily Record.
Palmer
Continued from Page 24 ing on and actually working for MainStreet Roswell and doing gigs for them. It’s been years ago,” he said. Palmer grew up in Roswell. Asked about his first memories of the UFO Festival, he said, “Honestly, I remember more going to the Chile Cheese Fest than UFO Fest, that was always a busy time of year, growing up. We never had the time to actually do anything.” Palmer and his mother Carla DeAnn Overmier have booths at most of the festivals, including Galacticon, selling hand-crafted art. Overmier specializes in leather works. Asked about his performance at the AlienFest, Palmer said, “I’ll be performing some original music, some covers, I have a handful of new songs that are coming out. It is country folk with blues. One of my good friends described it as what I play is kind of Americana, but modern. So it is, and he had this wonderful description: Americana is country music, folk music and classic rock, all played in a blues-style fashion on acoustic instruments. So far, that is the best description of Americana that I’ve heard.”
Palmer is also competing in the UFO Festival’s Battle of the Bands and has high hopes to open for Chevel Shepherd. He is already looking forward to fall when Galacticon takes place in Roswell. “Galacticon will be in October. We’re glad that they split because now it is not a distraction — it’s UFO Fest or Galacticon? It is now separate and I believe it’s going to be better. I am looking forward to see how that goes. Me and my mom are going to run a booth as we had in the past. I am going to contact them to attempt to play music. We’ll see how that goes. They usually bring in the Marquis de Vaudeville band, I am hoping to get my band to open for them. Because now that I have a band, I have more opportunities than solo,” Palmer said.
in 2019 and — with his two sons backing him up — began playing locally. Quickly gaining momentum the band had a full schedule just before the pandemic. During the lockdown the band continued writing and learning new music and rehearsing. “We now play many other styles of music, such as rock ’n’ roll, blues and soul. We are most looking forward to playing
in front of the awesome people attending; and seeing the costumes in the audience promises to be a unique experience,” David Michael wrote in an email. “I have no reason to not believe that there could be other life in the universe and I have personally seen many a strange sight in the night sky!”

This is a family-friendly attraction with state-of-theart special effects. More information is available on its Facebook page @roswellufospacewalk. From July 1 to 3, downtown will be under the control — we mean of course, under the “protection” — of the 501st Dewback Ridge Garrison. The Star Wars troopers are known to be a favorite of Darth Vader and he himself may make an appearance. The members of the garrison are based in Albuquerque and are volunteers with a passion for Star Wars. Day and night will bring out famous “aliens” from all around the known galaxies and there will be plenty of photo opportunities for “Earthlings.” Roswell UFO Festival The evening of July 1, head on out to the Cielo Grande Recreation Area for Intergalactic Cinema and the showing of the classic movie “Close Encounters of The Third Kind.” The next day the comedy “Spaceballs” shows and on July 3, “Men in Black” (MIB) shows. Tickets are for four people in a designated area. The 25th Roswell UFO Festival officially kicks off on July 2. This year, the event is in the hands of the city of Roswell who hired the event company In Depth Events. Part of the UFO Festival is a high-tech laser show on Friday, Saturday and Sunday at the Robert H. Goddard Planetarium, which is attached to the Roswell Museum and Art Center. Before or after the show, a visit to the carefully preserved workshop of Goddard will give insight about the scientist who made the first moon landing possible. He would experiment with his rockets in the desert and lived in Roswell. The Roswell UFO Festival opening ceremony includes celebrity engagements from local government, music and vendors. Another highlight at the Roswell UFO Festival is Battle of the Bands at the Roswell Community Little Theatre (RCLT), where the audience decides who will open at the UFO Festival’s main event the next evening, on the main stage at the Wool Bowl parking lot, featuring Chevel Shepherd as headliner. Gina Montague, one of the directors and actors at RCLT, was in charge of the auditions that happened before June 15. “We were able to select four bands to perform at the show,” she said. “Everyone who buys a ticket — they are $5 at the door — gets a vote ticket when they come in to vote for their favorite band, and while they are there they can also Thursday, July 1, 2021
purchase additional vote tickets to vote for their band.” According to Montague, the four bands are: Eternal Vernal from Elephant Butte, New Mexico; L25 from the Dallas, Texas area; Matthew Palmer and band from Roswell; and Sycamore Flood, also a local band. Palmer is also performing at AlienFest at the Chaves County Courthouse. “I’ll be performing with Brady Chambers and Donny Simmons and there is a good prize. The prize is opening for Chevel Shepherd at the Wool Bowl during the UFO Festival,” Palmer said. Shepherd, headliner of the UFO Festival concert, came to international fame when she competed in the 15th season of the TV show “The Voice” and won. She is a native of New Mexico and since the win — before the pandemic hit — has opened shows for Kelly Clarkson, Little Big Town and Lee Brice, to name a few. In addition to the winner of Battle of the Bands, a second opening act performs: Straight Tequila Night, a ’90s country tribute act. The Roswell UFO Festival offers entertainment for everybody. Early Saturday morning, runners and those who like to walk meet for the Alien Chase 5K that
starts at DeBremond Stadium. The race has been popular since 1995. There are different age divisions and the winners in each division will receive awards and medals. T-shirts will be given to all registered participants and there will be door prizes after the races. “Alien” costumes are not required. Those who love to golf have a special treat waiting for them after they register for the Alien Open Golf Tourney at Nancy Lopez Golf Course. TV and movie actor Brendan Fehr will be the celebrity golfer, welcoming his fellow golfers to the 18-hole tournament. Single players, groups and mixed groups can register. Fehr was cast as Michael Guerin in the TV series “Roswell” that aired from 1999 to 2002. The popular young adult series was about four alien-human hybrids that came out of incubation pods decades after their ship crashed in Roswell, New Mexico in 1947. Later that day, ticketholders will be able to meet not only Fehr, but his co-star Majandra Delfino for a question and answer event. Delfino played Maria DeLuca alongside of Fehr in the TV series “Roswell.” The Nancy Lopez Golf Course was named after the legendary golfer Nancy Lopez, who was inducted in the New Mexico Sports Hall of Fame in 2007. She was raised in Roswell. She left Roswell in the 1970s to become a golf champion with three Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) Championships, 45 LPGA Tour victories, nine amateur wins and a plethora of other achievements, including Player of the Year for the years 1978, 1979, 1985 and 1988. For those who would like to hike, there are several trails available, including a sunrise hike at Bottomless Lakes State Park on July 4. There are limited tickets available. Also on July 4, the children’s pastor of Grace Community Church, Alan Gedde, will have Sunday service at the UFO Festival main stage at DeBremond Stadium. Gedde, who is super-fantastic and we’ll have a band up there from Grace. My daughter works with different churches, so I know she’s got other instrumentalists she may include that are not from Grace,” Gedde said. Those who want to attend should bring lawn chairs, shade umbrellas and water. For those who love arts, crafts and animals Spring River Zoo Park is the place to be after worship. The park is next to the actual zoo. Numerous vendors will show off their creations and throughout the morning and afternoon, close encounters of the furry, feathered and scaly kind will happen: From pot-bellied pigs, rabbits, owls and bearded dragons, be ready to encounter critters. Most animals at the zoo have been rescued and can’t be released to the wild because of injuries or birth defects. A petting zoo with goats and other domesticated animals is also part of the experience visiting the zoo. The Spring River Zoo has used the downtime due to the pandemic to upgrade and renovate its enclosures. There is no fee to enter the park, but to enter the zoo requires a ticket.

Continued from Page 22 nique. Her interest in UFOs and contact began in 1961, when her aunt and uncle, Betty and Barney Hill, had a close encounter and subsequent abduction in New Hampshire’s White Mountains. She spent 15 years in painstaking investigation of the Hill abduction case and continues to seek scientific analysis of the compelling evidence. She has worked on three comprehensive studies on nearly 5,000 experiencers, two of which she initiated and saw to the end and has five professionally published books. Her bestseller with the late nuclear physicist Stanton T. Friedman (1934-2019) is “Captured! The Betty and Barney Hill UFO Experience.” She and Friedman worked together for nearly 14 years and collaborated on two additional books, “Science Was Wrong” and “Fact, Fiction, and Flying Saucers.” Her book with Denise Stoner, “The Alien Abduction Files,” includes her investigation of six intergenerational cases of abduction/contact. Her fifth book, “Extra Terrestrial Contact: What to Do When You’ve Been Abducted,” is a comprehensive guide to con-
tact for experiencers, those who love them, professionals who work with experiencers and the interested public. Additionally, she is a contributor to the Edgar Mitchell Free Foundation’s “Beyond UFOs: The Science of Consciousness and Contact with Non Human Intelligence.” Her essays have been published in several additional books and magazines. She has given on-camera commentary on the Discovery, History, National Geographic, Destination America, Science, and Travel channels and on several documentaries. Most recently, her work has been featured on Ancient Aliens and several Travel Channel shows. Kathleen has lectured at conferences across the United States and in Canada, Mexico, Brazil, and the UK. Additionally, she has given video lectures in Denmark and China. Thom Reed Thom Reed is the founder of the international model and artist group, Miami Models (South Beach) founded in 1995. kind. It led to the writing of the epic bestseller “Communion” that changed the way the world thinks about this enigmatic experience. When he eventually realized that the experience could not be attributed to known factors, he began making an effort to recontact what he calls “the visitors.” The response has been ongoing for the past 30 years and has been chronicled in several of his works. Many people have encountered the visitors with Whitley, placing it among the most witnessed paranormal events in history.

et’s be up front about this — UFOs generate a lot more questions than answers. As an investigator, I routinely use all the science at my disposal to find out about a given UFO’s size, distance, altitude and airspeed, but these facts — even when well estimated — leave countless questions unanswered. A simple but baffling question is: Where are they from? In this age of internet connectivity, I find myself on the mailing list of various UFO fringe groups who don’t hesitate to assure everyone that they have all the answers. “These objects are from Zeta Reticulae,” they proclaim, “and the reason they’re here is such-and-such.” Sadly, these pretentious folks come close to giving the whole field of UFO studies the reputation of being the flying saucer lunatic fringe, even when the truth is that most of us eschew such nonsense in favor of endorsing only what our proper research gives us good reason

UFOs: A world of mystery and wonder
to believe. Where are UFOs from? It seems likely that no one knows, or at least that no one without a top secret security clearance knows. Whether even those people really know is an open question to us private citizens. Are there things we do know about UFOs? Yes! One thing is that they represent an advanced level of technology. How do we know this? Not by having high enough security clearances and the opportunity to have examined real UFO wreckage, but by observations available to the public. UFOs have been observed on radar making right-angle turns at thousands of miles per hour, something conventional aircraft cannot do — at least conventional aircraft we know anything about. Has our government or some other government secretly developed aircraft capable of doing such things? We don’t know, but even if they have, it still amounts to technology more advanced than anything
openly known. To recognize the difference between one level of technology and another is something even the secret-keepers can’t keep us from doing. A radar blip is what it is. And why are UFOs here? Again, the fringe groups will tell you, inexplicably, that they know all about this, but they don’t, despite all their talk about galactic federations, secret alien agreements with the government, and so on. This question in fact raises more difficulties than one might think. It most often gets posed, usually unconsciously I suspect, in anthropocentric terms, i.e. in terms of human psychology, human motivations, human concepts. We ask “What do they want?” as if these creatures were known to “want” things in the way we humans do. Well, maybe they do, but maybe they don’t. Right here on planet Earth we have life forms that lead a complex existence without anything remotely similar to human consciousness. The
common ant comes to mind. Colonies of ants manage to do very intricate things although driven by biochemical forces leaving them little or no free choice, collectively or individually, about what to do. Could it be that some extraterrestrial visitors are sufficiently “insectoid” to be similarly lacking in humanlike reflection and motivation, but still possessed of such innate abilities that they could build and fly those fantastic machines? It’s conceivable. At any rate, when we ask “What do they want?” our very use of the word “want” may involve some unwarranted assumptions about what these beings are really like. Yes, UFOs are undeniably mysterious, causing us anxiety, but arguably that mysteriousness isn’t necessarily a bad thing. To a considerable extent, we humans thrive on mystery. It tantalizes us. It motivates us to try to learn more than we currently know, and to come to understand that in spite of our egos, we must recognize that there are always

a great many things beyond our present comprehension. Psychoanalyst Carl Jung could have been right in theorizing that UFOs fill a psychic need in us, suggesting connectedness and completeness, even accommodating us by usually being round in shape like the archetypal mandala that symbolizes closure and fulfillment, even though these ideals may remain unreached. I would further suggest that if UFOs satisfy some kind of collective need, it’s the need for mystery and unresolved questions. As thinking humans, we do require those things. What scientist would ever want to have to say there are no more questions, no more enigmas to overcome, no more challenges? We aren’t constituted that way. We need the wonder of the unknown, and with UFOs in our skies we will probably always have plenty to puzzle over. Questions demand answers, and sometimes we find them, but the answers generally create more ques-
tions. That’s the nature of human curiosity. Dr. Burleson holds Master’s degrees both in mathematics and in English, and a Ph.D. in English literature, with a dissertation on H.P. Lovecraft. He has taught at many colleges and universities, most recently at Eastern New Mexico University in Roswell. He is also fluent in Spanish and has a reading knowledge of French and an understanding of several other languages. Burleson is a certified UFO field investigator, research consultant, and New Mexico state director for MUFON, the Mutual UFO Network.
