The meaning behind Easter symbols

Easter Sunday is one of the most meaningful days on the Christian calendar. Easter commemorates the resurrection of Jesus Christ, who Christians believe died by crucifixion as a sacrifice to atonement. Many symbols are associated with Easter, and understanding these symbols can help Christians and non-Christians alike gain a stronger grasp of this deeply meaningful Christian day of worship. · Lamb: According to CatholicCulture.org, the lamb represents Jesus Christ, who Christians believe is the Son of God. The lamb can be connected to Jewish Passover, a Jewish holiday that commemorates the liberation of the Israelites from Egyptian slavery. During the celebration of Passover, each Jewish family killed a lamb as a sacrifice. Christians commonly refer to Jesus as the Lamb of God who God sacrificed so Christians’ sins could be forgiven.

tradition of looking sharp on Easter can be traced to the early Christians, who would wear new white robes for baptisms during Easter services. Eventually, all Easter celebrants began to wear new clothes during Easter services. · Palm fronds: Palm Sunday is the final Sunday of Lent, taking place one week before Easter Sunday. Palm Sunday commemorates Jesus’ triumphant entry into Jerusalem. According to the Gospels, Jesus rode a young donkey into Jerusalem, where the townspeople threw palms in front of him in homage. That practice was a customary sign of respect in Jerusalem, and today Christians believe the palm is a sign of peace. Palms continue to be distributed to the faithful during Palm Sunday Mass.

· Easter eggs: While Easter eggs may seem like a secular symbol of Easter, their connection to Easter dates back many centuries. CatholicCulture.org notes that the early Christians saw the egg as symbolic of the tomb out of which Christ emerged when he was resurrected. Early Christians even painted Easter eggs, much like parents do with their children today, and even had them blessed and gave them as gifts. Historians believe King Edward I of England, who ruled from 1272 to 1307, dyed boiled eggs and gave them to members of his royal household on Easter. · Clothing: New clothing is another symbol of Easter that traces its origins back further than many Christians may realize. It’s customary for present-day Christians to don their Sunday best when attending Easter Sunday Mass, and the

First United Methodist Church

God is doing amazing things at First United Methodist Church in Roswell. Remember when Jesus told his disciples, “Go therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit”? (Matthew 28:19 New Revised Standard Version) Well, that’s what we are all about! It starts by recognizing that everyone is a child of our Holy, Loving and Accepting God. That’s right – EVERYONE! We welcome all people into our accepting congregation. Families, singles, children, young and senior adults, teens, tweens and everyone in between gather together as a family of faith, eager to love and support one another as we reach out to all people in the greater Roswell area. Whether you are brand new to this “faith thing” or you’ve been a student of the Bible for decades, you will find classes and study groups that fit your needs. Our youth group is growing and thriving. Our worship is deeply meaningful, while punctuated with joyful sermons and engaging opportunities for adults and children. Our music program is second to none, offering music education for both children and adults. Mostly, we recognize Christ’s desire to grow disciples. Everyone is welcome here, and EVERYONE GROWS! We offer a discipleship process designed to guide God’s people in personal growth through 5 ministry areas. REACH ministries engage and invite unchurched people in our community to experience the love of Jesus through the body of Christ. Our Cowboy Church services, and our Messy Church experiences are fun opportunities for those who may be hesitant to try church for the first time.

NURTURE ministries engage and invite those who already know Jesus but

may not be in a position to actively attend church. Our prayer shawl ministry and homebound communion delivery extend God’s love to those who often feel forgotten by organized religion.

CONNECT ministries help people connect with Jesus and the First UMC

church family. Just walk through the doors of the church on a Sunday morning and you’ll be delighted by the happy, friendly folk directing you to our hospitality area where great coffee, doughnuts, yogurt, fruit, home baked goodies and even special individually bagged snacks for the kiddos are abundant! FORM ministries help you grow closer in your relationship with God through Jesus Christ. From regular Sunday School to Wednesday night activities to our upcoming trip to the HOLY LAND (OCTOBER 2018!! SEND ministries put our faith into action as we go into God’s world to do

local and out of state missions. God is giving us a vision to create a place where all of God’s people are made whole spiritually, physically and emotionally, then equipped to live life to its fullest kingdom potential as disciples of Jesus Christ. “Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord, And whose trust is the Lord. For he is like a tree planted by waters, Which spreads out its roots by the river, And will to fear when heat comes; But its leaf will be green, And will not be anxious in the year of drought, Nor will cease from yielding fruit.” Jeremiah 17:7-8

Jesus said, “I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.” So, this means that you cannot go to heaven the way you are. Something must be done, something must change, something must change with you. One might say, “We must be good, we must do good things”. Although these are noble, that is still inadequate. Jesus said in Matthew 5:21 that your righteousness must exceed the righteousness of the Pharisees if you are to see the Kingdom of God. Well, how righteous were they? Luke 18:9-12 answers this, they were faithful to the temple, they tithed of all they had, they faithfully prayed, and they fasted twice a week. Now many might measure up fairly close... but will probably fall short on fasting twice a week. Now, with that said, even if you were as

righteous as they, Romans 3:10,23 says, “As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one:”, “For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God.” So, you will always fall short by trusting what you can do. You must trust what Christ has done! John 3:16, Philippians 2:8, 1 Corinthians 15:1-8. Christ paid the penalty of sin for you that you might be saved, restored to a right relationship with Him. 2 Corinthians 5:21 says, Christ became sin for us that we might be made the very righteousness of God in Christ, the innocent dying for the guilty. WOW! All we have to do is repent which is to realize that you are guilty and do not deserve heaven and by faith place your trust in the precious blood of Jesus. Romans 10:9-10,13. Will you trust Him today?
