The California Teachers Association proudly joins the California NAACP on important issues in this year's election.
Arts and music education play a critical role in helping children learn, develop and achieve as students and in life. Proposition 28 ensures every student in every TK-12 public school in California has access to arts and music education—both traditional arts and music classes and contemporary arts like graphic design, coding and video.

Proposition 30 is a corporate money grab disguised as a climate initiative. Prop 30 isn’t needed, it’s too risky and puts corporate welfare above the welfare of all Californians. That’s why educators, civil rights and small business organizations oppose Prop 30.

Welcome CA/HI NAACP delegates, NAACP leaders and friends
I am honored to welcome you to the 35th Annual CA/HI NAACP State Convention Despite the pandemic, we have not missed a step and we are just as strong as ever, and I thank you for your ongoing effor ts in the fight for civil rights

As you know, our annual State Convention is vital to bring together CA/HI NAACP Branch Leaders, members, Youth & College members, and NAACP suppor ters It is imperative that we create an open platform for collaboration and in depth conversations with our highest regarded members and leaders to continue our fight to disrupt inequality, dismantle racism, combat environmental and climate injustice, and accelerate changes in healthcare and housing, while focusing on stopping the hate throughout the states of California and Hawaii
We are making great strides within the African American community, and other communities of color, and I look to you now more than ever as we near Election Day to raise awareness and elevate the Black voice at the polls this November As we’ve seen with the Los Angeles City Council recordings, we must stay vigilant in building political power and electing good, honest leaders that meet our expectations and know that there is no place for racism in society
I thank each and every one of you for taking the time to join us in Los Angeles as we meet to advance the business of the NAACP, and as we push forward to meet our mission to dismantle racism
Yours in the Fight for our Power,

NAACP CALIFORNIA HAWAII STATE CONFERENCE
Greetings:
Congratulations to the California Hawaii State Conference of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) on your 35th Annual State Convention, “This Is Power: Dismantling Racism.” Thank you for your continued commitment and ongoing efforts toward our 11 3 year mission to ensure equal rights and eliminate racial hatred and discrimination across our nation.
As I consider our ongoing efforts, I cannot help but go back to the 1776 efforts taken by our nation to ensure a more perfect union. Yet, here we stand and we do still stand in 2022, seemingly having to retrace many of our predecessors’ st eps Working to achieve the vision and mission of the NAACP, we are simultaneously compelled to defend it against direct challenges which also threaten the very existence of our nation as we know it.

Nonetheless, we are the NAACP. We have been and continue to be the conscience of this nation, time and again raising our voices to influence the nation to follow the proper course. We are obliged to organize ourselves and fully participate in the political process to ensure our voices are heard at all levels of the policymaking arena. Our work is rooted in a fervent belief in racial equity, understanding of and participation in civic engagement, and the creation of supportive policies and institutions that benefit any and all marginalized people. Power is using our vote to make a difference. I challenge us all every branch, state conference, member and leader to recharge, energize, mobilize, and realize the power we have as a community to foster nondiscriminatory public policy.
Remember, we are advocates of and for our own communities no matter the threat or crisis robbing us of our future. Power is informing, educating, and helping our communities understand that the race is not to the swift or strong, but to the steadfast, the one who endures. Power is commitment, endurance, and recognition that when we fight, we win. We are our brothers’ and sisters’ keepers, and we are honoring the legacy of all those who have gone before us freedom fighters, matriarch and patriarchs of the struggle that their work will not have been in vain.

Yours in the struggle, Leon W. Russell

Greetings:

It is with commitment and anticipation toward our ongoing work that I congratulate and thank the NAACP California Hawaii State Conference on the occasion of your 35th Annual State Convention, “This is Power: Dismantling Racism.” Leaders, members, and volunteers of every state conference, branch, and youth council are truly the platform upon which I stand, and it remains my privilege to represent this great organization.
We are aware that our entire nation is facing an unprecedented number of big challenges, and the very foundation of our democracy is in crisis. The forces of fear, hate, and division are determined to drive a stake through the heart and soul of America, but as in years past, we will not let them win. Since our beginning, countless NAACP foot soldiers have challenged this nation to live out the values that unite us. We have never flinched from speaking truth to power and have never given up on the promis e of America. We are growing in strength and building new coalitions and are even more determined to obtain the relief needed by Black Americans and other people of color.
Our 113th NAACP National Convention was aptly themed, “This Is Power.” Power protected the small town of Mason, Tennessee, from losing self governance and economic freedom because of racist greed and callous disregard for its citizens. Power supported Texas legislators who walked out of racially and politically motivated voter suppression bills that were designed to marginalize our votes. Power protected voting rights and registered record numbers of Black voters, resulting in massive Black turnout and the 2020 election of President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris. Power stands on the frontlines of the fight against those who would deny the reproductive rights of women, and Power led the fight for the confirmation of the first Black Woman Supreme Court Justice, Ketanji Brown Jackson.
Still, we must make Power felt as never before; continuing to urge every American to make their voices heard in every election. There is not one election we can afford to sit out. It is critical that voters turn out in record numbers to elect people who will repeal the unjust policies and reject the divisive rhetoric spreading throughout our country and posing actual and immediate threats to our democracy. Inaction is not an option. Our vote counts in every single election. We must organize and mobilize, agitate and litigate. We must unify and ratify the promise of America. We are the power and this is our moment.
We have earned the right to benefit from the labor of our hands, our minds, and our ceaseless commitment to democratic ideals. “And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not.” Let us continue together to stand strong and courageous, not disappointing the communities we serve and represent, and honoring those who have sacrificed to give pathway to our future.

Dear Friends:

This year’s theme, “This is Power: Dismantling Racism” is a timely message that emphasizes the strength of California Hawaii NAACP’s unwavering mission to advance the political, educational, social, and economic equality of all persons. Your leadership and efforts to address social injustices have been invaluable in fighting racism and advancing opportunity Indeed, your civil rights advocacy has been long, your positive impacts many.
When I took office, I made it a top priority to combat the pervasive effects of discrimination and hate by building a stronger, safer, and more just California. Much work remains to uplift our diverse communities including the millions of African Americans in California and Hawaii but I know our continued partnership will make a meaningful impact.
Keep driving forward as you continue to be tireless champions for social justice!

NAACP 35th Annual California/Hawaii State Convention October 21, 2022

Dear Friends:
I am pleased to greet the 35th Annual California/Hawaii State Convention. It is an honor to be among community leaders, elected officials, national activists, and the youth who represent the next generation of champions of racial justice.
For more than a century, the NAACP has been a trailblazer. Efforts to weaken minority voter turnout are prevalent throughout our country, making it crucial for our voices to be heard. I admire the NAACP’s work to increase voter registration and defend democracy. California legislation also continues to set a standard for enabling voter access and political participation.
The work the NAACP has done in the Los Angeles Unified School District helps set youth on a successful path. The Los Angeles branch does two important things: It recognizes educational accomplishments in students and it targets overcrowding and underachievement key issues faced by some children in LA schools.
I admire your fight to break down the barriers of racism. We must target equity for our society to flourish and for equal opportunity to be reflected in public policy. All those involved in the State Convention, including the volunteers who help the NAACP prosper, are furthering this critical goal. Today is about celebrating what the NAACP has created and about working together to envision an end to racism.
Thank you for all your work.
Sincerely,
ANTHONY RENDON Speaker of the Assembly
