A NOTE FROM

ANGELA LANDSBERG, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF NORTH PARK MAIN STREET

When you think of fashion you might conjure up images of overpriced designer stores that you can’t afford. But in North Park the meaning of fashion is something very different. North Park boutiques focus on local designers whose products are worthy and affordable. Stores boast stylish and trendy men’s and women’s clothing and accessories that are moderate in pricing but extremely chic! Many North Park boutiques cater to upcycling & restyling as a way of creating unique looks that reflect the diverse culture of the people who live, work and play in North Park. When creating this edition of the Explore North Park Magazine, we set out to shine a light on the fashion that is North Park. What better way to do this than with a fashion blogger, clothing model and social influencer to illustrate the style and life attitude of this urban neighborhood. As you persue this edition, you will enjoy meeting Vanessa Bali, our fashion representative and lifestyle model. Vanessa embodies the vibrancy and class that North Park exudes.

Photographer, Designer, Outdoor Enthusiast, and one of A7D Creative Group’s newest employees. Apart from shooting our cover, Julie has filled the pages of our Fashion Forward issue with her bright, clean style & creative vision. This badass photo babe is in her element when on the road, exploring and capturing the world through her eyes.

SAN DIEGO BLOGGER

BEING A FASHION BLOGGER , personal stylist, and lover of clothes in general, I’ve come to appreciate all things fashion related. I was in North Park recently doing some shopping and I came across a couple boutiques I absolutely fell in love with; Mimi and Red, and Rae Boutique. A couple of things I look for when shopping is how versatile a piece of clothing is and how I can incorporate it into my existing wardrobe. We all see something we like, impulsively buy it, then get home and think “what do I wear this with?” That’s usually when I get a call or email asking for styling help! What was great about these two boutiques in particular is one, the staff is amazing and two, the store is set up in a way that makes it easy to shop and they had perfectly styled outfits that were ready to wear. Fall may have taken it’s time to come around this year, but these boutiques were ahead of the curve. I found a beautiful green and floral maxi dress and paired it with ankle boots and a wide brim hat that gives off a very cool girl fall vibe. Once the weather really starts to cool down, adding a jean jacket, oversized trench coat, or leather jacket will keep you on the cozy side. I always say accessories make the look so adding touches of jewelry, a hat, scarf, or a jacket can take your look from day to night.

TOP CHEFS

GET TO KNOW THE OF NORTH PARK!

These North Park chefs have worked their way to the top of the list & the first in our stomachs!

WE ASKED: WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE HOLIDAY DISHES AND/OR TIPS?

THEY SAID:

CHEF MARCOS NAVARRO

WEST COAST TAVERN

2895 University Ave. | 619.295.1688

“During the holiday times we all feel rushed and overwhelmed. We have shopping, kids events, holiday parties and last minute gifts that we always forget about. My advice to everyone is plan ahead and cook in bulk while being able to enjoy the festivities. Keep it simple by baking your loved ones some chocolate brownies, cookies and all the comfort food that we all enjoy!”

CHEF ALYSE WALLACE WAYPOINT PUBLIC

3794 30th St. | 619.255.8778

“One of my favorite dishes to make for Thanksgiving is Honey Jalapeño Cornbread. I use a cast iron to bake, and serve with a little honey and butter while still warm. It’s super easy to make and reminds me of home during the holidays.”

CHEF MATT GORDON URBAN SOLACE

3823 30th St. | 619.295.6464

“The fall cooking season and the holiday’s are my favorite time of year. Nothing takes me back in time more than the smell of a simmering stock or a roasting ham or bird in the oven. But we all know the holiday meal is all about the side dishes. My favorite traditions are Celery Root Mashed Potatoes and brussels sprouts simply roasted with chunks of bacon and a little balsamic vinegar and olive oil, and of course the stuffing! Our Urban Solace Cheddar and Chive biscuits make a great start for any holiday stuffing (hint: you can buy them from us a couple days ahead!).

Happy Holidays!”

FARMERS, AND FOODIES, AND CHEFS, OH MY!

Shop the North Park Thursday Market every week, year-round, and discover what local farmers and food makers have to offer!

Local business Superfoods Coffee Co. stocks their kegs of San Diego made probiotic kefir sodas and nitrous cold brew coffees at coffee shops, restaurants and bars around North Park. Come by their booth at the market to pick up a cup to sip while you stroll!

Recently celebrating the one-year anniversary of the North Park Thursday Market, the expanded weekly farmers’ market is located in the heart of the neighborhood at 30th Street & North Park Way. Filling three city blocks, the year-round event fills 80+ tents with local farmers, artisan food producers, multi-ethnic dining offerings, artists and crafters.

No need to shop hungry: the market features a world of foods ready to enjoy, from Ibo’s Turkish Grill, 500F Gogi Korean food, Bread & Cheese grilled sandwiches and soups, gumbo, poke, and Mozambique dishes, and North Park’s only Indian food from Masala Cottage. Nearby, local restaurants including West Coast Tavern, Waypoint Public, Urban Solace and Tribute Pizza celebrate the seasons with specials based on market ingredients. Frequent chef cooking demonstrations from North Park’s Cardamom Café & Bakery, Saiko Sushi, Tiger! Tiger! and more teach shoppers to use the farmers’ bounty.

San Diego musicians play live music at the market to serenade you while you shop and keep the kiddos entertained.

New later hours mean more community members and chefs rely on the market for their weekly grocery shopping needs. Farmers offer fresh berries, sweet stone fruit, local citrus, leafy greens, crisp broccoli, squash and locally grown flowers. The market’s food vendors use the farmers’ goods to make their sauces, jams, pickles, smoothies and more.

Fresh food, live music, catching up with neighbors, greeting visitors, comparing discoveries and sharing recipes: North Park owns Thursdays at the North Park Thursday Market!

Even the cocktail menu is designed with care, with house made syrups, fresh squeezed juices, and aromatic herbs. Their wine menu features sustainable, small production, west coast wines meant to pair with Chef Matt’s menu.

Hammond’s Gourmet Ice Cream’s logo should be “Try to try just one flavor. We dare you.” Because truthfully, just trying one of their decadent varieties is simply not enough. With over 300 unique flavors to rotate from, you can indulge in many other flavors you won’t find else where, like White Chocolate Peanut Butter Oreos, Chocolate Coconut MacNut, and Lychee Cream.

With handmade ice cream and 18% butterfat, their ice cream is creamy, rich and dense. They are known for their Ice Cream Flights where you can sample many flavors without the guilt!

TIPS FOR

SHOPPING FOR A HOME

DREAMING OF HOME OWNERSHIP? Or perhaps you’ve outgrown your current home and need something larger?

Shopping for a new home can be a bit more daunting than browsing handbags or hats, but it can be just as fun! Following a few simple guidelines can take the stress out of the process and have you planning parties in your new home in no time!

Before you start shopping, you should be pre-approved for a mortgage through a reputable lender. You may qualify for more than you want to spend, or your lender may offer programs that afford you more buying power. The thing to remember is that you live in the payment of the home, not the price, so being clear about your monthly budget is crucial. And by the way, now is not the time to be doing other kinds of shopping. You can tank your home loan by buying a car or putting that new sofa on your credit card. Resist the urge to feather your new nest until after escrow closes!

Find a good Realtor. And by that I mean ask your friends and family for recommendations and remember, in this case, experience matters. Discount brokers can sound like a great idea, but this is too big a purchase (or sale) to trust to just anyone. Interview a few candidates and ask for references.

Spend some time sorting out your wants and needs, and think about areas in which you’re willing to compromise. For example, if school boundaries or walkability are important, perhaps you would be willing to buy the not-so-perfect home in the right neighborhood. A bonus of a fixer is you get to make it your own.

Visiting open houses can also be a great way to get a clear idea of what you like, and get a feel for home prices in neighborhoods that appeal to you. Lastly, keep an open mind! There are great neighborhoods and homes all over San Diego.

This casual and laid-back neighborhood bar has truly something for everyone. Looking for a night out without all the drama of cover, dress code, and overpriced drinks? Head to Bluefoot Bar & Lounge, where they take away all that nonsense to focus on making sure everyone has a fun night out in North Park. In the evening it’s a laid-back place to play some pool and grab a few drinks. Bluefoot offers an extra long happy hour, from when the doors open until 7:30pm every weekday. Even if it’s not happy hour, the drinks are some of the best deals in town and you can be sure that the bartenders pour them strong.

If you’re looking for a great neighborhood dance party, Bluefoot has you covered on weekends (and even some weeknights)!

Be sure to check out “The Rewind” every first Saturday of the month. This is North Park’s longest running throwback night, with resident DJs playing the best in classic party anthems and ‘90s gems. It’s clear to see that North Park Optometry is the superior option for your vision care services! If you can’t see that…. you may need to pay them a visit! Situated in the heart of North Park on University Avenue, this optometry practice is conveniently located for all of your vision care needs. Whether it’s an eye exam, contact lens exam, emergency eye care, or getting the perfect pair of glasses, this long-standing neighborhood spot has you covered.

They have been helping North Park and surrounding communities see better since 1956 when Dr. Alan M. Liker first opened the practice. In 1982, Dr. Mark Delsman came on board to help the office become a local favorite continuing to deliver compassionate service and high quality vision care. Earlier this summer, Dr. Meredith Walton took over as the third doctor to own the practice. With her comes an updated style, a broader selection of hip affordable glasses, and the latest in contact lenses technology at competitive prices. In addition, Dr. Walton is highly skilled in managing eye care emergencies and treating a variety of eye conditions such as glaucoma and dry eye. And, by taking most vision insurance plans, they pass the savings onto you and your pocketbook.

The office may have a new look and new owner, but it is still the same great service and the doctors you can trust with the windows to your soul.

No matter what you choose at Tostadas, you can be sure that it is an expert work of culinary craft.

City Tacos elevates your taco to a near art form with local, seasonal ingredients, each taste and flavor is crafted with care and quality in mind.

Gerry Torres is an innovator in crafted tacos and tostadas, and luckily for North Park, he has shared his gift for flavor with the community. He began with City Tacos, a craft taqueria with indulgent, delicious tacos for only $3.50 a pop (and just $3 during Taco Tuesday!). With gourmet tacos such as El Especial (sautéed shrimp, octopus and squid, oaxaca cheese, tomato concasse, Panko fried snow crab, diced cilantro and Serrano chiles) and Portobello Con Vegetables (grilled portobello mushroom with caramelized pineapple over melted oaxaca cheese), you won’t be able to go back to basic tacos. This restaurant elevates your taco to a near art form with local, seasonal ingredients. Each taste and flavor is crafted with care and quality in mind. To accompany your taco, grab a beer from their selection of San Diego and Mexican beer.

Tostadas, Torres’ second North Park venture, may differ in cuisine offered at City Tacos, but is alike when it comes to quality and execution. The eatery features fresh seafood and expert combinations. To accompany your ceviche tostada, sip on a fresh juice such as the Yellow Submarine (pineapple, cucumber, apple, and carrot) or the Mean Green (celery, parsley, spinach, and carrot). The eatery also offers aguas frescas, beer, and wine to accompany your meal. Beyond tostadas, this hip eatery also boasts a variety of other dishes such as soups, salads, and seafood entrées. No matter what you choose, you can be sure that it is an expert work of culinary craft.

THINGS TO DO

IN NORTH PARK!

WHETHER YOU’RE FROM SAN DIEGO OR NOT, THERE IS NO SHORTAGE OF THINGS TO DO ON ANY GIVEN DAY, ESPECIALLY IF YOU VISIT NORTH PARK. IF YOU’RE A FOODIE, BEER CONNOISSEUR, COFFEE ADDICT, ART ENTHUSIAST, SHOPAHOLIC, BEAUTY FANATIC, MUSIC LOVER, OR APPRECIATE ALL THINGS LOCAL THIS IS THE PLACE FOR YOU.

YOU MAY THINK OF “HIPSTER” WHEN YOU HEAR NORTH PARK BUT DON’T LET THAT FOOL YOU, North Park is not just for hipsters. Yes it is trendy but that’s a good thing especially when it comes to food, a place after my own heart. There are a number of places in North Park so narrowing down a list is pretty hard but here are my top favorite places to eat: Tamarindo for traditional Mexican food, Pete’s Seafood for authentic east coast sandwiches (try the lobster roll) and beer on tap, West Coast Tavern for strong drinks, American fare and a great happy hour, and City Taco’s for authentic street tacos with a twist.

Now that we have food covered, where should you go for the best drinks? Let me tell you!! If whiskey is your drink of choice, you will love Seven Grand. With its dark wood-lined paneling, live music, and pool table this makes for a great evening out. For

a stylish and open bar feel, Polite Provisions offers microbrews and craft cocktails served at the marble countertop bar and underneath a beautiful atrium room. If coffee is more your style, Holsem Coffee offers a unique take with quality and pure ingredients for that perfect cup of coffee every time. The ambiance is inviting and encourages you relax and spend time catching up with friends or working on your laptop.

Nightlife in North Park can range from a theatrical performance, musical or concert at the historic Observatory which opened in 1929 to playing old school arcade games at Coin Op. There really is something for everyone in North Park.

When it comes to shopping, I’ve got you covered. Whether you’re trying to find the perfect Christmas gift for your

significant other, a holiday dress for an upcoming party, or shopping for holiday décor these stores have everything you need. Mimi and Red is a women’s boutique offering a variety of clothing and accessories that appeal to a wide range of styles and tastes with a SoCal vibe. If you’re looking for items for your home, gifts, plants, art, or furniture Pigment has you covered on every front. You’ll most likely be drawn into this store by its Instagram worthy pink wall covered in succulents but stay for the beautifully curated collection of goods.

With the holidays fast approaching, you’ll most likely have

relatives visiting or heading out of town, and you’ll want to make sure you pamper yourself to relive some stress. Hello Birdie is a boutique nail and lash salon that offers manicures, pedicures and nail art all in a clean and stylish environment. These days, many “vintage” shops just have clothes that incorporate trends from an earlier time, rather than truly older clothing. If you’re looking for a bona fide vintage shop, head to The Girl Can’t Help It. This boutique specializes in the Golden Age of Hollywood1930s-1970s, heralding a past glamorous era of fashion. Every piece of clothing, accessories, and jewelry tell a story and make bold statements. The jaw-dropping, unique clothing is extremely rare, and since they have stood the test of time, you can be sure these quality pieces will last forever. This award-winning shop came to our community from London. The shop has made a name for itself in the fashion world, inspiring design houses such as Ralph Lauren, Prada and Dior, who would look to the shop’s impressive vintage collection in order to inspire their new designs. Actresses, models and entertainers would also look to the couple behind The Girl Can’t Help It to enhance and inspire their own personal wardrobe. The Girl Can’t Help It decided to leave London in order to seek the warm San Diegan sunshine, and was drawn to funky, eclectic North Park to set up shop in… and boy, are we glad they did!

Tired of the great North Park coffee shops and impressive craft beer tasting rooms? Of course you aren’t! But do you know what goes great with coffee and beer? BOOKS!

Located one block south of University Avenue in the heart of North Park, Verbatim Books is a used and rare bookstore which features a wide and eclectic range of gently-loved and antiquarian books. They also carry new titles from over 60 local authors. Their zine corner is full of stuff made by local zine and chapbook creators, as well as some of the best from distributors such as Pioneers Press and Microcosm Publishing. In fact, they are the home of San Diego’s largest zine and chapbook selection! This is where books, zines, and art converge. Find old favorites, explore recent titles, or check out what the locals are writing. Enjoy a shopping experience unlike anything else in San Diego.

They also buy and trade for your books, every day! Call or visit our website for more information.

Since 2002 RUFSKIN has designed and manufactured fine menswear in San Diego that’s worn around the world.

CRAFTED IN CALIFORNIA

Behind the walls of this chic boutique on 30th Street in North Park, RUFSKIN distributed menswear with European flair to more than 75 countries last year. What started as a home business in has grown into an internationally known fashion label, but it didn’t happen overnight.

Founders Hubert Pouches and Douglas Coats recognized a gap in the men’s denim market when it came to style and fit. From their garage in San Diego they created a line of low-rise jeans that quickly caught the attention of local stores and national wholesalers. As online shopping was becoming more popular, they launched rufskin.com a few years later and sparked international attention.

15 years later the website ships to more than 75 countries around the world. While denim is still at the core of their business their lines have expanded over the years to include sportswear, swimwear, underwear and other complimentary items.

Staying true to their roots is important to the founders so everything RUFSKIN creates is still designed and manufactured in Southern California. It’s a rarity these days, but the effort is worthwhile and ensures quality-crafted menswear for their customers. Their mission is simple; To create clothes that make you feel good about yourself. The RUFSKIN man is confident, inventive and unafraid to experiment with his personal style.

DATE NIGHT

AT WEST COAST

Being newlyweds my husband Rick and I make it a priority to have regular date nights. With our extremely busy schedules it’s important to pause, disconnect from work, and reconnect with each other. We are obsessed with delicious comfort food and finding new places to explore, which is why we always choose a new restaurant in a different part of town to try. For this particular date night, I wore a long velvet dress from Rae Boutique, Rick in jeans and a cashmere sweater, and headed to North Park to get drinks and dinner at West Coast Tavern. I love it here! The atmosphere is dark yet inviting and is also inside one of North Park’s most historic buildings which add to the cool vibe of this place. We were greeted by the hostess and made our way to the bar where we ordered the Chupacabra, a spicy take on the margarita and a Drink First, Ask Questions Later, a vodka drink infused with strong citrus...yum! If you like strong drinks West Coast Tavern has you covered. After sipping on our cocktails we made our way out to the patio, ordered the Charcuterie Cheese Board and laughed till the sun went down. If there’s one thing you need in any relationship, its laughter - and we certainly know how to make each other laugh, it’s what won me over for sure! We ordered a few more dishes to share, a couple more cocktails and then finished the night by walking hand in hand down University Ave. to enjoy the crisp fall air. Date Night perfection for sure. I know we typically choose new places to try, but we’ll definitely be back to West Coast Tavern for another date night.

A LOOK BEHIND

HOW NORTH PARK MAIN STREET CAME ABOUT & HOW EXPLORE NORTH PARK WAS BROUGHT INTO THE MIX.

The making of a brand... the North Park culture of unique boutiques, eateries, breweries, and galleries warranted a marketable brand and organically demanded to be known as a top San Diego destination. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed the creative process of making it happen, and am excited to see what the future of Explore North Park brings to our community.

– ANNA GAMBOA // CREATIVE DIRECTOR + PARTNER

NORTH PARK MAIN STREET (NPMS) is a member-based, non-profit organization formed in 1985 for the purpose of revitalizing and marketing North Park’s commercial district. NPMS is led by a volunteer Board of Directors comprised of business and property owners. Professional economic development staff carry out the organization’s day-to-day operations, which include programs and projects designed to improve local business conditions. Some of these activities include: organizing special events and marketing campaigns, fostering member communications and public meetings, guiding streetscape improvements and beautification projects, and technical assistance to and public advocacy on behalf of the districts small business owners. NPMS is under contract with the City of San Diego to manage the Business Improvement District (BID) whose boundaries run along the primary commercial corridors of University Avenue and 30th Street. The BID includes more than 600 North Park business members who each pay an annual assessment that helps to underwrite the work of NPMS. NPMS leverages these annual fees to provide a notable return on its members’ investment in the community.

EXPLORE NORTH PARK is a marketing campaign, supported by a grant from the City of San Diego’s Economic Development Department. The goal of Explore North Park is to market this vibrant community as a destination for food, entertainment, unique shops and art. By catching the attention of not only the locals but those visiting San Diego as well, our goal is to add North Park to the known list of hot spots such as the beaches, Balboa Park, the Gaslamp District, and La Jolla. The Explore North Park campaign includes this publication, as well as the Explore North Park website and social media profiles. // 619.294.2501 3076 University Avenue - San Diego, CA
