PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
Another Success: ATCA’s 58th Annual Conference and Exposition By Peter F. Dumont, President & CEO, Air Traffic Control Association

I
am writing this almost immediately following ATCA’s 58th Annual Conference and Exposition. This was a very challenging year leading up to the Annual with the government shutdown and its effect on the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). The FAA returned to work only two business days before the Annual. Because of our continuing coordination and the support of the FAA, the shutdown only had minor consequences on the event overall. Our line-up of keynote speakers included Michael G. Whitaker, Edward L. Bolton, and The Honorable John D. Porcari. Our panels were populated with the right mix of government and industry speakers. And the exhibit floor hosted both quality and quantity. Starting Monday afternoon and continuing through the week, the exhibit floor saw more FAA traffic. We did lose three FAA booths and the emergency vehicle from the Tech Center because of the short amount of time between the government start-up and exhibit build-up, but still had the same number of exhibitors as in past years. You may have also noticed we expanded the size of the hall and spread out the exhibits more to allow us to insert lounge areas. This gave hall visi-
tors a place to sit, network, and relax without having to leave the show floor. The result was longer- lasting foot traffic. We will be reviewing attendance analytics and reporting on them to ATCA’s membership shortly. If you were in attendance, you will receive a feedback survey; please fill it out as soon as you receive it, so we can be responsive to your input and make next year bigger and better. You may have noticed that the Young Aviation Professionals (YAPs) were out in full force along with future YAPs in the roles of volunteers. This is very telling of the success of the program in attracting young professionals to ATCA events. This helps them network, grow professionally, and invigorate our industry. I was encouraged with the tremendous success of the presentation theaters on the exhibit floor. These free presentation venues are tailor-made to both presenters and the intended audience. They have improved year after year with your input. If you have feedback for the association in regards to the ATCA’s 58th Annual Conference and Exposition, you do not have to wait for the survey. Please let us know your thoughts as soon as possible so we can be responsive and improve the benefits and value the association provides.

Miami Center Celebrates
Years!
I
n early September, Miami Center (ZRA) celebrated its 50th anniversary with current and former employees from their history. ATCA was proud to take part in the celebration. In attendance were Teri Bristol, the FAA’s Deputy Chief Operating Officer, Chris Metts, Vice President of Program Management at the FAA, and Greg Burke, FAA’s Vice President of En Route and Oceanic. The primary role of the center is to sequence and separate over-flights, arrivals, and departures in order to provide safe, orderly, and expeditious flow of aircraft filed under instrument flight rules. Last year alone, the center handled 2,350,200 aircraft operations – a far cry from when it started in 1963. Alongside a “yearbook” of employees from throughout the years, the center is preparing a time capsule – to be opened in 25 years – and ATCA contributed one of the latest issues of The Journal of Air Traffic Control.
Did You Know? • Miami International Airport (MIA) is the largest gateway between the United States and Latin America, and is one of the largest airline hubs in the U.S.
• MIA ranks as the 25th busiest airport in the world, by passenger traffic. ATCA Bulletin | October 2013
