Two Conferences, Many Events

ou always hear the saying “There’s no such thing as a free lunch.” Well, there is a free breakfast for ATCA members next month. Consider this my personal invitation to every single ATCA member to join us at the Gaylord on September 30, during the Annual Conference and Exposition, for a Member Welcome Breakfast. It will not cost you a penny and you don’t have to be registered for the conference to attend. Of course, you are more than welcome to visit the Exhibit Hall (free of charge), if you are able. At breakfast, you will hear from our ATCA Board of Directors Chair, Jim Washington. He will discuss the state of association and take any questions you may have. Come and participate or simply come to observe and eat. Currently, my staff and I are busily preparing for the ATCA 59th Annual Conference and Exposition. This year, for the first time, we are offering two conferences for the price of one. The Annual that you have become accustomed to over the last few years will now feature twice as many sessions on current
issues relevant to you – the members. The second conference, which I am sure you have read about, is the Civil/Military Aviation Conference (CMAC). My staff and I have been working with the FAA, NATO, ICAO, DOD and numerous worldwide governments and organizations to ensure we have their maximum participation at all levels. Lastly, whether you are attending the conference or not, I encourage you to join us at the Glen A. Gilbert Memorial Award Banquet the evening of Wednesday, October 1. This growing industry event will celebrate the many achievements of Monte Belger, President of Metron Aviation and past ATCA Chairman, as this year’s recipient. This is an opportunity to get dressed up and enjoy an evening out with many of the leaders in our aviation community from throughout the world. Whether you attend the breakfast, the Gilbert Banquet, CMAC or just come tour the hall and see what the future has to offer our industry, please take time to speak with me and let me know how I can add value to your membership in ATCA.

T
he Civil/Military Aviation Conference (CMAC), organized by the Air Traffic Control Association (ATCA), is the world’s largest civil/military air traffic management summit, where senior civil and military leaders from throughout the world explore plans for civil and military collaboration. It regularly attracts military commanders and air forces’ chiefs of staff, directors of civil aviation and heads of air navigation service organizations to focus on the latest developments and future directions in air traffic control. Historically, CMAC has attracted more than 300 key decision makers and other centers of influence from 50 nations. This year’s event, joint with ATCA’s 59th Annual Conference and Exposition for the very first time, is set to impress yet again. Read below for a preview of the sessions and topics covered by the best and brightest in the industry. 4

Session 1: How does the military see its role in future Air Traffic Management (ATM) systems? As the world continues to deploy newer systems (such as NextGen, SESAR and CARATS), the military will continue to comply with what is being deployed. This panel will go in depth to discuss these future systems and the impact they have on both on the military and civil sides of the house.
Session 2: Unmanned Aerial System (UAS) integration and access to global airspace This panel discusses what is being done in the worldwide ATM environment to accomplish integration to airspace and how other countries can integrate UAS in a more timely fashion.

September 30. Brenner’s experience and diverse knowledge of
air traffic management (ATM) with civil and military ATM will be
a key feature of the conference. He has worked in ATM his entire
career and became the head of EUROCONTROL in January 2013. Since his arrival, Brenner has revitalized the organization’s vision and strategy, most notably the development of Centralised Services as part of deploying the Single European Sky ATM Research (SESAR) initiative.
With the continued reduction of the DoD budget, the department won’t be able to meet the mandate to equip all aircraft to maintain complete fleet operation. This panel will discuss what can be done to keep the majority of the aircraft compliant and flying during these difficult fiscal times.
Session 4: Civil/military network dependency New equipment is being deployed daily across the world on both the civil and military sides of aviation. With more efforts being made to collaborate and harmonize the airspace, where is the aviation world headed regarding dependency on both sides on the network? How will it prevent cyberattacks on these networks? This panel will describe current
and future plans to provide a safe and reliable network on both sides of ATM.
Session 5: Civil/military operations: Best practices in worldwide collaboration efforts With continued demand to open up airspace to allow civilian aircraft to enter into restricted military airspace, this panel will discuss what is being done to open this space to accommodate entering civilian aircraft to have more direct routing. In turn, the panel will cover greater allowances for the military to operate in civilian airspace. World ATM Congress 2013 Wins Best Congress

orld ATM Congress’s first edition in 2013 recently won the top prize at the Eventoplus Awards. Out of 159 submissions, World ATM was awarded gold as the Best Congress overall. As subsequent editions continue to grow, Madrid provides the perfect backdrop to showcase the industry’s best practices, brands and talent. It’s especially gratifying to receive this award on our first effort,” Peter F. Dumont, President & CEO of the Air Traffic Control Association (ATCA), said. “AIM Group Madrid has worked diligently with our team to meet the
demand for access to the ATM community in an innovative and vibrant environment. The 2013 event hosted 5,084 participants from 104 countries. In 2014, the World ATM Congress attendance grew to 6,265 people from 128 countries, making it the largest ATM event in the world. Attendance for the 2015 event is expected to significantly exceed this year’s record. It encompasses all sectors of the air traffic community – from senior executives, controllers, aviation manufacturers and suppliers, airline executives, military and government, young aviation professionals and aviation trade associations. The next World ATM Congress will take place March 10-12, 2015 in Madrid.

AOPA Announces Transition Back to Jeppesen for Online Flight Planner Service
F
rederick, MD – The Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association (AOPA) is announcing a change in its online flight planning member benefit. Starting in 2015, AOPA will return to the AOPA Internet Flight Planner (AIFP) powered by Jeppesen, thus retiring the current flight planner, FlyQ Web. AIFP will remain a free member benefit. “We are excited to be partnering with Jeppesen to once again offer the popular AOPA Internet Flight Planner to our members,” said AOPA President Mark Baker. “Jeppesen is a longtime supporter of AOPA and its mission and I am pleased that together, we will deliver the free internet-based flight planner that our members already know and value.”
Since its initial launch in 2007, AIFP became a popular feature on the organization’s website. AOPA is already working with Jeppesen on migrating user data from FlyQ Web. In the transition back to AIFP, AOPA will be returning to the same version as existed when the switch was made to FlyQ Web. A “beta” version of AIFP will be available for members to start using this fall. A full transition will occur after AOPA is comfortable with the user experience and has ensured that the full transition will be as smooth and seamless as possible. AOPA will keep all members and flight planner users informed as the process goes forward.
