President’s Message
Looking Back on 2013 By Peter F. Dumont, President & CEO, Air Traffic Control Association
T
he year 2013 proved to be a challenging time for the country and our industry. Beginning with sequestration in March followed by furloughs, threats of tower closures, and a government-wide shutdown. Sometimes, when there are multiple challenges in our industry, the benefit of being a member gets lost in the noise. ATCA worked diligently with the American Association of Airport Executives (AAAE) and the government in trying to find a solution to sequestration that didn’t include closing ATC towers. Prior to that, we worked with the American Society of Association Executives (ASAE) to eliminate and/or substitute language in proposed bills, which did not overly restrict the government’s ability to attend conferences and symposia, ensuring that you will have continued opportunities to interact with government officials. ATCA understands that planning and budget earmarks are required
early in the year to ensure attendance at the ATCA Annual Conference and Exposition. With this in mind, the association worked very hard to ensure government attendance at our events in the face of a government shutdown. We made the decision early that “the show would go on” and communicated that to you for planning purposes. Our efforts were extremely successful as evidenced by the strong FAA presence from the right levels at ATCA’s 58th Annual Conference and Exposition. 2014 is already looking much more promising with a budget in place. ATCA is working with the FAA to schedule a Budget Briefing to industry early in the New Year. It is important that we all understand what this new budget means to all of us. I have assurances from FAA at all levels that they will support ATCA and that they recognize and value our importance in the industry. I look forward to supporting you in 2014.

Year in Review A look back at 2013
ATCA had a one-of-a-kind year – kicking off with the premiere of World ATM Congress in Madrid, and wrapping up with its signature event – the ATCA 58th Annual. Take a look back at the year that was, and then plan for the year ahead. If you can’t attend in person, the association has many benefits that don’t require travel. Visit www.atca.org/Membership to learn more about your membership, and tell a friend!
World ATM Congress From 12 – 14 February, ATCA joined with CANSO to host the first World ATM Congress in Madrid – a large-scale international gathering that truly benefits the industry it caters to. More than 5,000 participants walked the Exhibit Hall, visited booths, attended the Conference Programme, and enjoyed the city of Madrid. We return this year from 4 – 6 March, and we hope to see you there! Visit www.worldatmcongress.org for more information.

ATCA’s Technical Symposium A tried and true event, we changed up the Technical Symposium this year by spending a day at the William J. Hughes Technical Center – mere miles away from the symposium site – to learn about and appreciate long-term FAA research projects presented by the technical subject matter experts. ATCA returns to Atlantic City this year from May 13 – 15: www.atca.org/TechSymposium.
ATCA’s Aviation Cyber Security Day ATCA 58th Annual Conference and Exposition In the face of the U.S. government shutdown, the ATCA Annual continued on, providing a needed meeting place for government and industry only two days after the shutdown came to a close. Attendance picked up throughout the week, and ultimately ended on a celebratory note, with the Glen A. Gilbert Memorial Award honoring Patrick Ky, newly minted Executive Director of European Aviation Safety Agency. For more highlights, visit our site: www.atca.org/58Annual.
YAP Annual Rooftop Event
ATCA Holiday Party
ATCA’s Young Aviation Professionals grew to a truly cohesive group this year, hosting several Speaker Panels, an Annual Meeting, simulator tours, TRACON visits, and an annual YAP Rooftop Event hosted by Lockheed Martin. Look for more events in 2014 at www.atca.org/YoungProfessionals.
ATCA’s Holiday Luncheon always features three key ingredients – food, merriment, and members! We love capping off the year by showing appreciation to the individuals and organizations that make the association. To all ATCA members – we wish you a joyful 2014!

Headlined by Former Secretary of Homeland Security, Tom Ridge, the sophomore-year event found continued interest with a Conference Proceedings competition, and roundtable exercise to involve all attendees. Cyber Day will maintain its quality-level discourse this year, but will change seasons – look for it in the Fall near Washington, D.C.: www.atca.org/Cyber.
