Another Successful ATCA Technical Symposium
I
hope you were able to join us in Atlantic City, N.J. last month for the ATCA Technical Symposium. We were there to get things done and we squeezed quite a bit of work into just a few days. This year was different than our traditional model. To ensure a rich, faceto-face technical exchange, we transported participants to the FAA William J. Hughes Technical Center on Tuesday morning and then again in the afternoon. While there, attendees listened to presentations from different Tech Center departments, viewed FAA exhibits, and interacted with FAA employees from all levels of management. The unintended result of this exchange was that not only did attendees have the opportunity to visit with employees who would normally attend the symposium, but they also met additional engineers, program managers, and executives who had never before attended the Symposium and would not have otherwise been involved. Tech Symposium attendees left the exchange with a better understanding of the center’s mission as well as a number of new relationships at the FAA. The following days consisted of discussion panels of the highest quality.
We had decision-makers, vision leaders, and influencers from FAA, NASA, the Department of Defense, and other government agencies, as well as industry partners. Our industry partners exhibited in the newly renovated ballroom overlooking a rejuvenated Atlantic City Boardwalk. The networking breaks and receptions afforded enough time for government and industry to interact at all levels. Thank you to the conference planning committee, our sponsors, and the ATCA staff for another successful event. The feedback to date has been very positive and it is likely we will replicate this model for next year’s Technical Symposium. Next up for ATCA, we will be holding our third annual Aviation Cyber Security Day. Join us on June 20 at the Renaissance Arlington Capital View in Arlington, Va., to discuss the most pressing issues in how cyber breaches impact operations of the U.S. National Airspace System (NAS). Be a part of NAS operations as we simulate a day impacted by natural disasters and cyber threats. Registration is open now at www.atca.org/CyberRegister, and this event should not be missed.

STR-SpeechTech Ltd. Completes Technical Refresh of StarCaster TWEB System at Three Sites in FAA Alaska Region

S
TR-SpeechTech Ltd. (STR) has recently completed a Technical Refresh of the StarCaster TWEB (Transcribed Weather Broadcast) System for the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) at three Flight Service Stations in Juneau, Fairbanks and Kenai, Alaska. The StarCaster TWEB System provides automated broadcast of current weather information to aircraft in flight via VHF radio, throughout the state of Alaska (Anchorage FIR). The system also provides automated recordings of weather information that are available to pilots via telephone on Telephone Information Briefing System (TIBS). “STR is pleased to provide the FAA with a refresh of the StarCaster TWEB System,” said Craig Dickson, president of STR. “Since the system was first installed in 2004, the FAA has relied on StarCaster TWEB to provide pilots in Alaska with vital weather information. This is very important in a large state like Alaska, where general aviation plays such an important role in the transportation network. Provision of current weather data
is critical for pilots in a state where extreme weather conditions can rapidly deteriorate and affect aviation services.” The StarCaster TWEB Systems that have been installed at the FAA Flight Service Stations in Alaska incorporate a dual hot-standby redundant server design, which will provide uninterrupted service for the TWEB broadcasts and TIBS recordings. The systems also incorporate STR’s patented textto-speech technology, which provides very high-quality broadcasts that are easy for pilots to understand. STR will continue to provide ongoing support and maintenance for these TWEB Systems in FAA Alaska region.
