BRAKE LATHE
From Interequip
The DBL Star, a Korean made off car brake lathe that combines affordability with reliability, is available for heavy truck and passenger vehicles. The DBL Star off car brake lathe has been sold in Australia for over a decade, with thousands of units working right around the country. Interequip says its success can be tied back to its cost-effective price coupled with outstanding disc and drum finishes. Entering the market in the disc only form, it is reportedly less than half the cost of a comparable on-car lathe, and in the disc and drum lathe it is said to be slightly over half the cost of an on-car lathe.
Pricing includes the bench, lathe, chip tray, hood and accessories to start machining straight away. Made in Korea, Interequip says this product has built a reputation for reliability and ease of use. Featuring a LED light array built into the clear hood so you can still see in low light conditions, it also has an LED for drum use. The lathe features adjustable V-gibs to adjust out any future wear, and Interequip states that one of the features owners tell it they like the most is the switchable cross slide. Interequip explains that it is impossible to engage both slides at once and the spindle feed is infinitely variable which results in first rate finishes. Further it says possibly the greatest part of the lathe is the bit you can’t see, and that is the size of the motor which has a built-in gear drive coupled with a Gilmer type belt, similar to what a super charger uses. It explains that the belt helps to isolate vibrations and the gear drive increases the motor torque. Three jaw chuck and flywheel cutter are also available. To find out more, visit www.interequip.com.au or call 1800equip (1800 037 847). To ensure constant brake power is accessible at all times, the use of a vacuum pump is often necessary. Most vehicle brake boosters use a vacuum that is generated by the naturally aspirated engine. The UP32 universal vacuum pump by Aeroflow Performance (part number AF49-1150) can be triggered on demand to support the brake booster. Especially when the engine does not supply sufficient vacuum under certain operating conditions, for example, where a larger camshaft is installed, the UP32 supplies the vacuum to ensure brake booster operation. The compact design is a direct bolt on replacement fitment for Holden Commodore VE-VF models but can also be used in any universal application.

CONVERT YOUR 79 SERIES TO A SIX SPEED AUTOMATIC
Wholesale Automatic Transmissions is a specialist in manual to automatic conversions
Wholesale Automatic Transmissions’ most popular conversion is the Toyota LandCruiser 79 Series Manual to Six Speed Tip-Tronic Automatic. The company says industry professionals and car enthusiasts alike come to its team for expert conversions. The conversion of manual vehicles to automatic transmission can be carried out at Wholesale Automatic Transmissions’ Melbourne workshop, or for those with the DIY know-how, the Wholesale Automatic Transmissions team can supply all of the required kit components. To date, Wholesale Automatic Transmissions has completed more than 2,000 manual to auto conversions. “While there is likely to be some expense involved in changing from a manual to automatic transmission, the benefits will continue to reward you for a long time to come after the conversion has taken place,” Wholesale Automatic Transmissions’ Rodney Hudson-Davies said. “In particular, the simplicity it offers drivers when they’re behind the wheel, and the smoother performance it delivers in many driving conditions.” “This conversion comes with the strong, reliable and refined Six Speed AB60 Automatic Transmission from the 200 Series LandCruiser,” Rodney said. “This is rated at 900Nm of engine torque at the crank and brings revs down to 1,550rpm on standard tyres. The conversion uses our famous Nomad Valve Body. There is a billet CNC machined extension housing that bolts to the original transfer case. There are no modifications to your chassis, drivetrain or drive shafts. The Toyota Six Speed Transmission is controlled by the COMPUSHIFT Transmission Controller, which can be setup using a Bluetooth connection to a phone App. A display unit allows monitoring of important parameters and there is manual control in sports mode for low range. A torque converter lock-up is a staple part of the conversion and gives manual control of the torque converter clutch at the touch of a button. This helps keep the transmission temperature under control and is perfect for long distance towing and slow corrugated roads – there is 100 percent engine braking for downhill descents. One of the primary factors of the success of a conversion is how good the interior looks. The conversion comes with a bespoke centre console to house the genuine Toyota Shifter Assembly and the single cup holder is replaced with twin cup holders. There is also a smart phone pocket, a large carpet lined centre storage compartment, 12v power outlet and twin USB plugs. All of this can be customised further to suit your needs and we also want to improve your driving experience in other ways such as with a DynaMat sound deadening layer under the carpet.” Visit www.automatictransmission.com.au for more information.
PROTECTING A HIDDEN HERO
The Transmission System is the guardian of the vehicle’s power
Complex and operating under continual pressure at high temperatures, a vehicle’s Transmission System is the very definition of a Hidden Hero. Always ready, always precise, always accurate – the Transmission System performs the critical role of harnessing all the raw power provided by the engine and delivering it in a controlled, measured way to the wheels, through a precise, continuous process of speed and torque transmission. If the transmission fails, so does the whole vehicle. As if this exploding mechanical complexity wasn’t enough, things are only going to get tougher for this Hidden Hero. Already highly compact Transmission Systems will become smaller and run hotter, to meet the demand for lighter, more efficient vehicles. Environmental imperatives will continue, increasing demand for fully electrified and hybrid drivelines which bring with them unique cooling challenges and place further pressures on space. Urbanisation and ‘always on’ delivery trends will increase stop/start traffic for everyone but place particular pressure on the Transmission Systems of commercial vehicles. PETRONAS Tutela: protecting the Transmission System
All that stands between the full power of a vehicle driving metal against metal is a thin layer of protective molecules. The PETRONAS Tutela range of specialist transmission fluids has been engineered to withstand pressure, enhance performance and efficiency, and extend the life of moving parts. PETRONAS explains that key features and benefits of this range include: • Improved fuel efficiency – PETRONAS Tutela transmission fluids combine lower viscosity with strengthened fluid film resistance, to reduce friction and improve fuel efficiency without compromising on protection. • Defends against mechanical stress, to help avoid unexpected downtime and extend the working life – PETRONAS Tutela transmission fluids have anti-wear and anti-pitting properties to help extend the life of the Transmission
System, and outstanding shock load resistance to protect the axle. • Performance even at low temperatures • Ready to tackle the increased electrification of the driveline • Ready to take on new speeds • Multi-purpose fluids for increasingly automated transmissions • Enhanced noise and vibration control qualities • Smoother, more comfortable gear shifts For more information, contact PLIA major distributors CoolDrive, Oil and Energy, Pacific Petroleum, Global Lubricants Distributors, and ASV Euro Car Parts. SAFE T GUARANTEED WITH SAFETSTOP BRAKE PLATE TESTING
Lead the way in safety and boost your sales
According to surveys, more than 40 percent of workshop owners are concerned about margins and profitability in their business. The car servicing industry certainly is brutal, and only workshops at the leading edge survive. Investing in your business is the only way to not only keep up with your competition but thrive. Those behind SafeTStop say investing in a SafeTStop brake testing system is one way you can do this. SafeTStop says its plate brake testing system is the ideal investment for the vehicle repair and maintenance business that wants to: • Take the lead as a business by ensuring customers know that conventional decelerometer brake tests and current safety test legislation are not at the leading edge of safety and that there’s a far superior test available. • Value-add and increase income by recommending an inexpensive SafeTStop plate brake test to each customer, typically priced around $29.95. • Pinpoint brake problems quickly – problems a
conventional brake test wouldn’t even catch – a win for your business and your customers. • Check wheel alignment and suspension function at the same time, as well as the corner, axle, tow-ball, and total vehicle weights using the integrated weighbridge. • Provide a clear, printed report to your customers to support your maintenance and repair recommendations, or illustrate the effectiveness of the completed work, to build trust and loyalty. You can have it installed in less than a minute, at a walking pace, in the safety of your workshop. Alternatively, you can install a SafeTStop plate brake tester outdoors (it is weatherproof), and because it sits on a flat concrete surface, such as your driveway, it uses unused area rather than taking up space. Then you can park on it or drive across it on the way to a hoist – it becomes part of the floor that can be safely driven over by any vehicle under 4.5 tonnes. For heavy vehicle businesses and operators such as councils and transport contractors, the SafeTStop brake test system and weighbridge provide you with a complete Chain of Responsibility solution. SafeTStop has approval for brake testing in every Australian state and territory and New Zealand, and it comes with a 10-year warranty. Backed by Adelaide University research results
A recent in-depth investigation by Adelaide University revealed that a car with the front brakes limited to 54 percent of maximum pressure could pass the legislated decelerometer brake test. SafeTStop says the results indicate the current brake testing legislation is desperately overdue for an update. For more information, call SafeTStop on 1300 88 61 64.

EMERGING CLUTCH TECHNOLOGY
Clutch Industries is launching an innovative new system to market, replacing thousands of clutch kits
The rise of Electric Vehicles (EVs) will decrease demand for most common vehicle parts, outside of a handful of categories. The effect of this has not been felt in the Australian market but with major manufacturers phasing out production of Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) vehicles in 2030 it is only a matter of time before the effect is seen in the industry. Mantic Engineering (the R&D division of Clutch Industries) has a future thinking philosophy and has therefore been proactively approaching the challenge of how to ensure workshops have immediate access to the parts they need in a complex and significant category (clutch) when demand will be declining with increased adoption of EVs. In 2018 a dedicated engineering team at Mantic embarked on a project to decrease clutch SKU complexity (ie. increase carparc coverage with less parts) and reduce installation time for mechanics whilst also looking to enhance performance and quality compared with typical OEM clutches. What they created is a clutch system. Clutch Industries says this system replaces thousands of different clutch kits with less than 20 products. The system is called, UniClutch. Clutch Industries explains that the new system works by taking the fitment complexity out of the clutch and consolidating the mechanical interfaces into what it calls a fitment kit, which contains patented multi fit flywheel mount and patented interchangeable splines. This system allows the sealed pre-assembled clutch to be adapted to various makes and models where traditionally a new clutch kit would be required. Another key piece of patented technology new to UniClutch is Mantic’s Radial Dampening Centre (RDC), found in the UniClutch disc. Clutch Industries says this technology is the pinnacle of noise and harmonics reduction inside a clutch disc and performs comparable to that of a dual mass flywheel. Eiffel has multiple state of the art facilities for blending and filling of lubricants and greases in UAE, India, and Kenya, with an installed capacity of blending and filling more than 40,000 MT of lubricants, 16,000 MT of greases and 6,000 MT of viscosity improvers per annum. Eiffel offers 62 API Licensed Products in the engine oil category for passenger cars and the commercial vehicle segment. Its products are approved by major OEMs such as Porsche, Volkswagen, Mercedes Benz, Man, Volvo, Mack and Renault. For more information, visit www.eiffellubricants.com.au
Lastly, UniClutch is designed to handle prodigious torque in a compact modular package which fits into the bellhousing of most vehicles from a Toyota Corolla to a Nissan Patrol. This is achieved by leveraging Mantic Engineering’s 60 years’ experience manufacturing multi-disc clutch systems in Australia. With the development stage of the project now complete, in May 2022 Mantic Engineering will launch a pilot program for its innovative clutch system. It will be fitting its new system to hundreds of different vehicles not only in Australia but around the world, to show off what it says is the most innovative solution ever developed. MEYLE-PD BRAKE COMPONENTS
MEYLE says their components deliver clean wheels, low noise and highest performance
With more than 25 years of experience as a manufacturer, the Hamburg-based company says it has a lot of expert know-how in developing products with added value for the aftermarket – including and in particular for brake components. While already offering a comprehensive portfolio for this category, MEYLE continues to expand its range, which in total now comprises almost 3,000 brake discs and pads – including 1,200 in the performance-oriented product line MEYLE-PD. MEYLE says the trend is rising, and the main focus is more than ever on precision fit for vehicle and driver, customisation, and added values such as cleaner wheels and low braking noises. Due to its long-term experience in the independent aftermarket, the company says its product experts and engineers are very familiar with the requirements and place their focus on intelligently designed and produced parts. The production of high-quality designed parts follows a multi-stage re-engineering process. One of the results of it are the advanced brake parts for a safe and sporty driving experience of the MEYLE-PD product line. MEYLE-PD brake discs and brake pads are characterised above all by optimum braking performance, durability, ease of installation and noise comfort, states MEYLE. For an optimal driving experience, the company remarks the individual brake pad compounds are tailored to the vehicle and driver type. When working out these individual brake pad compounds, MEYLE says noise was a particularly important factor, stating that a loud squeaking noise is often considered a distinctive feature of sporty brake pads. MEYLE nevertheless clarifies it goes one step further and looks for ways to make components quieter again, coming up with a wide range of individualisation and optimisation of brake pads that ensure a top performance while being quiet: individual shims and chamfers, specially designed slots and mixing ration of the friction lining. It explains that the latter not only reduces noise but also allows for less brake dust, ultimately reducing emissions. Further, it says MEYLE-PD brake pads also keep rims clean for a long time, especially compared to competitors*. The MEYLE-PD brake discs also reportedly score with unique features such as a brilliant appearance through modern coating technology for long-lasting corrosion protection which makes degreasing superfluous. Another highlight is the particularly high heat resistance achieved by the so-called “highcarbon” process, which increases the carbon content of the grey cast iron, the material of the brake disc. In a comprehensive comparison test with an independent test institute, MEYLE-PD brake components were put through their paces and were able to assert themselves against the competition, explains MEYLE, which states the results saw MEYLE-PD brake pads achieve the best comparative values in almost all categories, proving the optimum combination of performance and low noise running performance. CHANGED THE DIFF OIL LATELY?
Rowe says its extensive range of diff oils has you covered
With terms like ‘Filled for Life’, combined with a general lack of drain/fill plugs on rear-wheel-drive (RWD) differential housings, it’s not uncommon for service technicians to overlook the need to periodically change the diff oil in RWD vehicles. While it is true, the service interval is typically quite long – it’s still well short of forever. Rowe says it always recommends consulting the service manual for the proper change intervals and cautions you to keep in mind the factory recommendation will be for normal driving. If the vehicle is driven hard, used for heavy towing, or racing, then the recommended change interval needs to be shortened. It should also be shortened if the differential becomes occasionally submerged (for example, when launching a boat), routinely driven on snowcovered roads, or is in an off-road enthusiast’s vehicle that encounters rough or wet terrain. If information on the recommended service interval is unavailable, or the vehicle is well past the factory’s milage/age references, Rowe says a good rule of thumb is fresh oil every 40,000 to 50,000km. Rowe explains that it offers several mineral and fully synthetic gear oils suitable for hypoid differentials – along with many traditional manual transmissions. These include the Hightec Hypoid EP 75W-140 S-LS (fully synthetic), Hypoid EP 85W-90 (mineral based) and Hightec Hypoid EP 85W-90 (also mineral based). The Hightec Topgear 75W-90 S and 75W-90 HC are also both fully synthetic. Rowe explains that this extensive range covers regular differentials, as well as units equipped with a limited slip or traction-sensing centre. It states that all Rowe hypoid gear lubricants provide optimum wear protection and feature select additives designed to promote fault-free operation. Along with the range of extreme-pressure hypoid gear oils, Rowe says it also offers an extensive range of premium-quality, specialist driveline lubricants – all of which are 100 percent made in Germany. For product details, purchasing and distributor information, head to www.rowe-oil.com.au or call MotorActive on 1800 350 622.
ZF AFTERMARKET EXPANDS TRW EPB PORTFOLIO
TRW is said to be one of the most reputable and recognisable brands in global automotive braking and safety systems
Available from ZF in Oceania, the TRW brake program offers more than 9,000 part numbers, with the range featuring “superior solutions” for a wide array of applications, covering the majority of the local car parc. Newly introduced to the range are a number of products focused around the TRW Electric Park Brake (EPB). The TRW EPB has become standard equipment in many vehicles in recent years. Despite being first established in the upper vehicle classes, it is now increasingly used in volume models. Advantages of the EPB include increased driver comfort, more freedom for the car’s interior designers, and allowing the possibility of new driver assistance functions. TRW EPB Repair Kit
Although the EPB variations with actuator integrated into the brake caliper are considered very reliable and durable, damage can still occur – as with any technical system. The electric actuator can fail even if the mechanical part of the brake caliper is still intact, such as after a long period of the vehicle standing idle, when the brake pads can detach from the disc and overload the engine. If the EPB actuator is defective, workshops have to replace the entire EPB brake caliper – until now, says ZF. ZF Aftermarket now offers a TRW actuator repair kit as a low-cost and resource-saving alternative to complete replacement of the brake caliper. The kit consists of the electric actuator, two fastening screws and an O-ring, with which the EPB can be repaired in a short time and at low cost for the customer. The TRW actuator repair kits are available to order from ZF in Oceania for the following models: • Audi A3, A4, A5, A6, A7, A8, TT, Q3, Q7, Q8 • BMW 5 series, X3, Z4 • Jaguar F-Type Convertible • Seat Ateca, Leon, Alhambra • Skoda Karoq, Kodiaq, Superb • Volkswagen Golf VII, Passat, CC, Arteon, Tiguan,
Touareg TRW Brake Calipers
ZF Aftermarket also has plans of extending the TRW EPB calipers range, with versions soon available for a wide range of models from Audi and BMW in the same colours as used in the original equipment, including black, red, grey and ultramarine. Some vehicle manufacturers also use an attractive colour design for the caliper of the service brake. Therefore, ZF Aftermarket now offers a wide range of coloured brake calipers which can be fitted to many models from the Volkswagen Group, as well as cars from Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Alfa Romeo, Fiat, Peugeot and Land Rover. The TRW product range from ZF Aftermarket also includes spare parts for luxury cars and sports cars with high-performance brake calipers in the OE colour available for models such as the Lamborghini Gallardo and the Mercedes-Benz SLC, powerful SUVs including the Range Rover Sport and for top sports models such as the Audi S6 and BMW M8. The local TRW brake program, available from ZF in Oceania, includes brake pads, discs, master and wheel cylinders, boosters and calipers, as well as companion products like brake hoses, brake fluid, brake grease and brake cleaner. BENDIX SHARES TIPS ON BRAKING SYSTEM LUBRICATION
While the major contributor of braking performance comes down to the design of a vehicle’s braking system and the use of quality components such as brake pads, shoes and other parts, the installation process of new components at the time of servicing is also extremely important. Braking systems are quite complex with many moving parts. Brakes also function under extreme conditions – think of the scorching operating temperatures, and being located close to the road they’re exposed to dirt, water and debris. They’re also impacted by the road surface which can be rough and cause vehicle vibration. Lubrication is probably not something that immediately comes to mind when thinking about braking and combating these conditions, after all, it is the friction that will slow a vehicle down, and lubrication is not a friend of friction. But behind the scenes, lubrication plays a vital role within the braking system. Bendix says the use of a high-quality lubricant such as Bendix’s ‘Ceramasil’ Brake Parts Lubricant is ideal to apply to a variety of braking components, and should be used at every brake pad replacement or brake shoe change, as part of installing new components. Bendix explains that Ceramasil is ideal for use in the following scenarios: • On caliper hardware, pins, slides and bushes • Metal to metal contact areas • Metal to rubber contact areas • Backing plates of brake pads or brake shoes • Between the shim and backplate of the brake pad The product was specially developed for braking systems. It uses a silicon-based formula that’s gentle on rubber components. Bendix explains that some earlier style braking lubricants can react with the modern EPDM rubber used in modern vehicles, leading to potential swelling of the rubber but states that Ceramsail however has zero effect on EPDM rubber and also provides a high level of thermal stability and holds its viscosity during heat cycles for prolonged periods. Another benefit of the product is that it delivers corrosion and rust protection, while also having a noise dampening effect to help silence noisy calipers and other braking components. Additionally, Bendix says Ceramasil acts as a boundary film that helps repel moisture and is formulated to withstand the extreme temperatures under which brakes operate. When Ceramasil is used, Bendix says drivers can expect longer-lasting, quieter and more efficient braking with even wear – stating that this ultimately reduces vehicle upkeep costs while ensuring the braking system is working at the optimum level. THE TOP THREE CLUTCH INSTALLATION ISSUES
And how to avoid them, according to EXEDY
The most important part of any clutch system repair begins with the initial diagnosis. The primary cause of complaint must be identified correctly before replacing or repairing any components. If the initial diagnosis is incorrect despite repair work having been carried out, the vehicle will still be in a state of disrepair. The consequence of which is usually the premature failure of the clutch. EXEDY always recommends following vehicle manufacturers’ individual clutch installation instructions, unless the kit selected requires a different procedure, in which case any special instructions required will be provided within the kit. Here are the top three installation errors EXEDY encounters, along with sure-fire ways to avoid them. Incorrect or excess grease applied during installation
This is a common mistake, which can result in contamination of the friction surfaces, leading to the clutch slipping and/or juddering. Apply a small amount of suitable high melting point grease to the input shaft, the splined hub, the fork (where it contacts with the release bearing) and the fork pivot surface. Slide the friction disc onto the input shaft then wipe off any excess grease before completing installation. EXEDY includes a tube of high melting point grease with every clutch kit. Misalignment of the engine and transmission
This can occur for various reasons: hanging the gearbox during installation; forcing the gearbox input shaft during installation; a worn or missing pilot bush (spigot bearing); warping of an alloy gearbox bellhousing; damaged or missing gearbox dowel pins; interference between the gearbox and engine mating surfaces caused by dirt or grease accumulation, metal filings, or even by trapped wiring. To avoid this, it is important to degrease and inspect the gearbox bellhousing thoroughly, ensure a transmission jack is used correctly, and use the appropriate clutch alignment tool during installation.
Release bearing faults.
Release bearing installation and release mechanism faults
Thoroughly inspect the gearbox bearing guide tube, the fork or lever and the cable or hydraulics system for any wear or visible faults. Always follow vehicle manufacturers’ recommendations when adjusting or replacing the bearing, the cable or any hydraulics components. Check for any clutch travel adjustment required upon clutch replacement. For more from EXEDY, visit www.exedy.com.au
