ADS-B replaces World War II radar technology used in air traffic control today with the precision of satellite-based surveillance. The system uses GPS signals to provide air traffic controllers and pilots with real-time location information to keep aircraft safely separated in the sky and on runways. Both pilots and controllers will see radar-like displays with highly accurate traffic data from satellites – displays that update once a second and don’t degrade with distance or terrain. Eventually, with ADS-B, more of the responsibility for keeping safe distances between aircraft will shift to pilots who will have cockpit displays pinpointing all the air traffic around them, along with local weather, terrain, and flight information. In addition to enabling pilots to fly with less input from air traffic controllers, ADS-B will allow controllers to better manage the flow of traffic. And, because ADS-B is a flexible and expandable platform, it will be able to change and grow with the evolving aviation system.
