But is booking your travel on your own online always the best or least expensive option? According to a recent survey by AAA, a majority of Americans see value in using a travel agent. Eighty-five percent find travel agents provide cost-effective, trouble-free, personalized vacation planning. Why are more people returning to travel agents? Time-challenged consumers may be one reason for the shift. Some simply do not have the time or comfort level to do their own research and planning. Others prefer the personalized service and confidence that comes from letting a professional do the work. They value the expertise that a travel agent brings to the table. While online travel sites certainly have their place, there’s a vast difference between a buying a ticket and creating a vacation. If you’re not familiar with the terrain finding the right information can be an exercise in frustration. Blackouts, restrictions and hidden fees are not always obvious to the casual consumer and mistakes can be costly. Then there is the process of putting all the pieces together — airlines, hotels, travel insurance, ground transportation, sightseeing — the list can be daunting. A simple phone call or visit

Many specialize in cruises or escorted vacations, or destinations like Disney. A new study funded by Carnival Corporation for the American Society of Travel Agents (ASTA) and conducted by market research firm TNS Global found that travel agents save consumers an average $452 per trip, and four hours in travel planning. Some life lessons about life insurance Five things people tend to get wrong By Robin Jones trike up a conversation about life insurance and you might get some attempts to change the subject. Most people don’t want to talk about—or even think about—the topic. But it’s not just the “D” word that keeps people from thinking about life insurance. Other misperceptions also prevent many of us from getting coverage. Here are a few notions that are worth reconsidering. I have my company’s group life insurance, and that’s all I require. Employer-based life insurance is helpful, but it’s often not enough to meet your personal financial goals. For starters, the limits of employer-based life insurance are generally one to two times your annual salary. If you have others who depend on you financially, many experts recommend that your coverage be worth five to eight times your salary. Second, employer-based life insurance coverage may end the minute you stop working for that employer—so if you’re laid off or decide to leave that job, you’ll be without coverage until the benefits from your new job kick in. A personal life insurance policy complements what your employer provides. Only the breadwinner needs coverage. A spouse who cares for the home may not get a traditional paycheck, but his or her work is critical. Without the homemaker, the surviving spouse would likely have to pay for day care

to relatives, a life insurance policy can help ensure they can pay off any debts. I’m too young to need life insurance. You’ll get the lowest rates on life insurance when you’re young and healthy. Rates go up every year, and you run the risk of developing a medical condition that will make life insurance more expensive or unattainable. Establishing a life insurance policy as soon as you can afford to, and locking in low rates for as many years as possible, is smart. I have enough life insurance. Be aware that as your life circumstances change, the amount of life insurance sufficient to cover your personal needs may also shift. Major life events such as marriage, having kids, or buying a house usually call for additional coverage. Most insurance companies suggest an annual policy review with your agent to ensure your coverage reflects any significant changes in your life.

How to talk to teens about identity theft Reducing their chances of becoming a victim

rotecting your children and monitoring their activities is easier when they’re young. You can walk them to the bus stop each morning, control where and how they spend their time, and try to shield them from negative influences on television or in the movies. But when your child becomes a teenager, it’s much more difficult to protect them from external dangers, such as identity theft. As with allimportant topics, it’s imperative to educate your teen about identity theft and teach them how they can protect themselves. Your teen and the Internet — Social websites are as popular with identity thieves as they are with today’s youth. Speak with your child about becoming friends only with people they know outside of cyberspace and why they should limit the personal details they share online. Advise them that they shouldn’t share their date of birth, full name, address, or school. Absence of this information will make it more difficult for criminals to piece together the necessary data to commit identity theft. Your teen and credit card use — Allowing your teen to get a credit card or to become an authorized user on your credit account, enables him or her to begin building a credit history.

DON’T BE A VICTIM — Teens should limit the information they share online. It’s also an important step in learning good credit habits. As you teach your teen about smart credit card use, be sure to also speak with them about protecting personal financial details and the implications that identity theft can have on a person’s credit report and score. Teach your teen to carefully review his or her credit card statements for suspicious transactions and advise your teen against leaving

Governor Wolf signs bill strengthening child passenger safety

overnor Tom Wolf signed Senate Bill 1152 into law, now called Act 43, on June 13th. Sponsored by Senator Pat Browne, the bill requires a child under two years of age be securely fastened in a rear-facing child passenger restraint system until the child outgrows the maximum weight and limits designated by the manufacturer. The old law did not require small children to be rearfacing in the passenger restraint system. This makes Pennsylvania the 4th state to enact such a law. AAA East Central commends State Senator Pat Browne, R-Lehigh, and State Representative Mike Schlossberg, D-Lehigh, for their sponsorship of the law. The Pennsylvania AAA Federation provided testimony in the House in support of Rep. Schlossberg’s bill. Since 2002, AAA clubs across the country have worked to enact stronger child restraint laws in every state and the District of Columbia. AAA also promotes child passenger safety through education, advocacy, and research, conducting car seat clinics that teach parents the correct way to install a car seat. A properly installed car seat can dramatically reduce the likelihood of injury or death, but as many as three out of four car seats are installed incorrectly.

“AAA applauds Governor Wolf for signing SB1152 into law,” says AAA East Central Legislative Affairs Director, Theresa Podguski. “Industry research, including the American Academy of Pediatrics, the National Traffic Safety Administration, and the National Transportation Safety Board, clearly shows infants and toddlers should continue to ride rear-facing until they reach the highest weight or height recommended by the manufacturer of the seat.” Although child passenger safety has dramatically evolved over the past decade, motor vehicle crashes continue to be the leading cause of death of children four years and older. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), in a policy update published in Pediatrics in April 2011, advised parents to keep their toddlers in rear-facing cars seats until age two, or until they reach the maximum height and weight for their seat. It also advises that most children will need to ride in a beltpositioning booster seat until they have reached 4’ 9” tall and are between eight and 12 years of age. GMC introduces rear seat reminder on 2017 Acadia Industry-first safety feature has the potential to save lives

ife moves too fast. There are a million things on everyone’s mind, and sometimes even the most organized among us needs a little help remembering everything in your vehicle. The all-new 2017 GMC Acadia is looking to offer absent minded drivers some help with the Rear Seat Reminder. This industry-first feature is designed to remind drivers to check the back seat as they exit their vehicle under certain circumstances. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), about half of the children under age 14 who die of in-vehicle heatstroke do so as a result of being forgotten. Items left in the back seat are often a target for theft. According to the FBI, nearly 23 percent of larceny in 2014 was from a motor vehicle. “The Rear Seat Reminder helps protect the things we care about most,” said Tricia Morrow, GM global safety strategy engineer. “Whether it’s your lunch, laptop, pet or most importantly, your child, it’s easier than it seems to forget what’s in the back seat. With this new feature, we are leading the charge to address this ongoing problem.” On a sunny day sunshine coming through car windows makes your car work like an oven. A study sponsored by General Motors, found it takes 10 minutes for the temperature inside a vehicle to rise by 20 degrees. Children

Technology alone cannot solve the issue of heatstroke and young children, but the Acadia’s reminder can help. Make a habit of looking in your vehicle — front and back — before locking the door and walking away. Unlocked cars pose serious risks to children who may be naturally curious. Once they crawl in, they often lack the developmental capability to find their way out. Keep a large teddy bear or other stuffed animal in the car seat when it’s empty. Move it to the front seat when you place the child in the seat as a visual reminder. The safest way to protect a child from heatstroke is to never leave a child unattended in a vehicle — even if the windows are partially open, or the engine is running and the air conditioning is on. If you see a child left alone in a hot vehicle call 911 immediately or the local emergency number.

The Rear Seat Reminder works by monitoring the Acadia’s rear doors. The feature is intended to activate when either rear door is opened and closed within 10 minutes before the vehicle is

started, or if they are opened and closed while the vehicle is running. Under these circumstances, the next time the vehicle is turned off after a door activation, the Acadia is designed to sound five audible chimes and display a message in the driver information center that reads, “Rear Seat Reminder / Look in Rear Seat.”

PROTECTING PETS

Dogs are even more susceptible to heat stroke than people because, unlike humans, they mostly lack the ability to sweat. They cool their bodies by panting, and dogs with short muzzles are at greater risk because of their narrow, short airways. Never leave an animal in a parked vehicle in warm weather, no matter how briefly, and make sure your pet has access to shade and water when you travel.
