The AAA Approved Auto Repair Program October is Fall Car Care Month and AAA has identified a network of approved repair facilities that include new car dealerships and independent garages. These shops all meet AAA’s strict quality standards and display the AAA logo. When you see the AAA Approved Auto Repair sign, you’ll find highly trained technicians, a wide range of professional repair services and guaranteed workmanship. And while hundreds of repair facilities apply for the AAR rating each year, only about one-third are able to meet AAA’s rigid criteria. AAA ensures the repair facility has the right tools and equipment to provide a wide range of repairs. They must also adopt staff training qualifications and insurance guidelines. Finally, AAA surveys customers about their satisfaction with the facility. The AAR program protects members against repair failure, because all repairs, parts, labor, and components are guaranteed for 12 months or 12,000 miles under normal operating conditions. In addition, AAR shops have agreed to allow AAA to investigate repair service transactions that have been disputed by members and to abide by AAA’s resolution. See page 2 for a list of AAR garages in your area.

Tailgating puts you and everyone else at risk By Richard Hamilton Chairman, AAA East Central ailgating may be fun at football games, but it’s no picnic when you’re on the road. In law enforcement terminology tailgating is known as “following too closely” and this dangerous and ultimately futile practice is almost always the result of an aggressive driver, or the last resort of someone in a hurry. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) rear-end collisions account for nearly one-third of the over six million crashes each year. In most cases, the driver at fault was not maintaining a safe following distance. Studies have shown that tailgating saves no time. The laws of physics and of common sense dictate that you cannot go faster than the slowest car ahead of you. Unfortunately, poor planning and driver impatience increases everyone’s risk of being involved in a crash. Tailgaters will often attempt to intimidate other motorists into driving faster than their comfort level. Drivers who are being tailgated exhibit elevated heart rates, and other signs of stress, which in turn, can negatively affect their driving decisions. Other critical driving elements tailgaters sacrifice are perception and reaction times. Perception is the time we need to see and process a roadway hazard, while reaction time is the time needed for a driver’s body to physically

T

Richard Hamilton react to the brain’s perception. The American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials found that it takes an alert driver approximately two seconds to see a roadway hazard and react to it. At 60 mph, that’s 176 feet, over half the length of a football field. Stopping distance is also directly proportional to the size, weight and braking ability of your vehicle. If the car in front has better emergency braking, the tailgater will collide with it, even if they both apply their brakes at exactly the same moment. Large trucks need even more real estate to allow for safe braking. The average stopping dis-

Save on flu shots at participating Kmarts

A

AA is helping members protect themselves from the flu this season with a limitedtime discount. Members can receive a flu vaccine for just $15 (retail price $24.99) when they show their valid AAA card at 69 participating Kmart Pharmacy locations. That’s a savings of almost $10! The CDC reports that 5 to 20 percent of U.S. residents contract the flu each year on average, resulting in more than 200,000 hospitalizations and thousands of deaths annually. The CDC recommends annual vaccination (for ages 6 months and older) as the first and most effective step in preventing the flu. Brenda Kromer-Catanzaro, Kmart Pharmacy manager in Indiana, Pa., suggests that in addition to vaccination, people take the following steps to remain healthy this flu season: • Wash your hands often and thoroughly (for at least 20 seconds). If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer. • Cover your mouth and nose when sneezing or coughing. Always cough or sneeze into a tissue or your elbow – never into your hands. • Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth.

tance for a loaded tractor-trailer traveling at 55 mph (in ideal conditions) is 196 feet, compared with 133 feet for a passenger vehicle. Taking unnecessary risks behind the wheel could result in a crash that may seriously injure or kill you or someone you care about. A much safer and saner approach is to back off, focus on your driving and allow more time to reach your destination. Maintain a safe distance from the vehicle in front of you. This gives you a better view of the road, and the other traffic, so you can anticipate problems and have more time to react. Follow other vehicles at a reasonable and prudent distance and as your speed increases, so should the gap between your car and the car ahead. A safe following distance requires a minimum of three seconds from the vehicle in front of you. More distance is necessary at night, in poor road or weather conditions, or where visibility is limited. Do yourself a favor and limit your tailgating activities to football games. And don’t be bullied into speeding up if someone is tailgating you. Move into another lane or turn off the road and allow the tailgater to pass. Never tap your brakes or lose your temper as this can quickly escalate into a road rage incident. Avoid eye contact and do not make or return rude gestures. Concentrate instead on the safety of you, your passengers and your vehicle.

Avoid close contact with people who are sick. • Clean and disinfect all frequently touched surfaces and objects, such as tables, countertops, desks, keyboards, doorknobs and mobile devices. • Stay home from work or school if you aren’t feeling well. This will help prevent spreading illness to others. Flu shots are free to Medicare Part B-eligible patients with proof of insurance. Kmart Pharmacy will process most major insurances for eligibility to determine your best option. The AAA member discounted price for flu shots at Kmart Pharmacy is valid through November 30, 2014. Visit AAA.com/health for a list of participating locations.

The ups and downs of your auto insurance What’s behind increases and decreases in auto insurance premiums By Robin Jones ou’re getting ready to pay your auto insurance bill when you notice that your monthly premium has changed. But you haven’t filed a claim or added or removed a driver from your policy—events you know are likely to raise or lower your payments. So what happened? It may be something you haven’t even considered. Many factors come into play when your auto insurance premiums are calculated. Here are a few: Up: You bought a new car. Newer vehicles are typically more expensive to insure due to their higher value and increased repair costs. In addition, if you are financing a new car, you will likely be required to purchase collision and comprehensive coverage (which you may or may not have previously had with an older car). Up: Auto repair costs have increased. To achieve greater fuel economy, more automakers these days are building cars with lightweight materials such as aluminum, which can be more expensive to fix than steel. And the electronics in today’s cars are costly to replace. These factors help drive up repair costs, which get passed along to insurance companies. If repair costs go up enough, insurers may be forced to increase their premiums accordingly.

Y

GOING UP — Newer vehicles are expensive to insure. Down: You bundled your homeowners insurance with your auto policy. Most insurers offer a multipolicy discount, so buying home or rental insurance from your auto insurance provider can be a sure way to reduce your premium. The same goes if you put all of your cars on the same policy; multivehicle discounts can make a nice dent in your payment. Up or down: Insurance premiums for your particular area may be rising or falling. In many states, insurers consider the zip code where your car is garaged when determining your premium. If claims in your region have gone

up significantly, your insurer might adjust the premium for everyone in your neighborhood, regardless of your personal claim history. For example, if there’s a spike in auto thefts in your area, you might pay more on your insurance due to the increase in claims, regardless of whether or not your vehicle was stolen. Of course, if you have a good driving record, typically more your personal premium will reflect your eligibility for a good driver discount of at least 20 percent. Up or down: You’re driving less, or more. Maybe you recently moved closer to your kids’ school and activities, and you’re spending less time behind the wheel. Or maybe a new job requires a longer commute. As a result, your premium will change because, beyond your driving record, annual mileage is one of the biggest predictors when it comes to claims. The fewer miles you drive, the less likely it is that you’ll be involved in an accident. Up or down: You’ve had your driver’s license for a certain number of years. Auto insurance premiums for

inexperienced drivers are generally higher, because the rookies on the road have more accidents than veteran drivers do. Accordingly, as you amass driving experience, your rates generally go down. But at a certain point—usually after about five decades behind the wheel—driver claims start to increase again, and premiums go up in turn. Down: Your teenage driver had a good report card or just left for college. A good-student discount on your auto insurance is another reason to encourage your teens to excel in school. In addition, if your child is not planning to drive while away at college, you may be eligible for a student-away discount, which provides year-round coverage for your student at a greatly reduced premium.

Family vacations made memorable in Maui Island offers loved ones chance to reconnect and recharge

F

amily get-togethers are treasured moments no matter where they take place. There’s something truly magical, however, about memories created along Maui’s sparkling shores. Maui features a wide range of activities the entire family can enjoy together. From scenic road trips to close-up wildlife encounters, no one needs to be left behind on these excursions.

sites offering vantage points are Puu Olai at Makena; the hotels of Wailea, Kaanapali and Kapalua; the Papawai Lookout on the road to Lahaina, near Maalaea Harbor; and the waterfront restaurants in Lahaina.

Haleakala National Park

Haleakala is a dormant volcano – the largest in the world – but there’s nothing sleepy about it. It teems with activity, attracting more than a million and a half people every year. Exploring the park can be as physically challenging as overnight backpacking or as easy as sitting in a car, so families can choose what they do according to the abilities of the members. Sunrise at Haleakala is considered a pilgrimage worth losing sleep over – literally. Viewers of all ages bundle up hours before sunrise and eagerly make their way to the summit to start the day on a breathtaking note. The drive from sea level to Haleakala’s peak takes less than two hours and little more effort than a willingness to ride in the car. During the ride, you and your family can encounter as many ecologi-

Active families can make a full day of hiking or horseback riding in and out of Haleakala’s 3,000-foot-deep crater. Another way to experience the mountain’s natural variation is to go on one of the privately operated bicycling trips offered.

Whale Watching

Maui is the heart of whale-watching

in Hawaii, and for good reason. During the winter mating and birthing season, Maui’s waters teem with humpback whales. Visitors can easily view these majestic creatures while on a whalewatching cruise or even from shore. Maui’s south and west coastlines provide abundant whale-watching opportunities. Various operations offer whale-watching cruises throughout the season aboard both power and sail boats. Among the shoreline

The Maui Ocean Center, an aquarium complex dedicated to sea life of the north Pacific, lets the whole family experience the scuba-divers’ world from the comfort of shore. Aquarium visitors will travel through a clear acrylic tunnel surrounded a 750,000 gallon open-ocean tank, coming eye to eye with reef sharks, stingrays and tropical reef fish all native to the Hawaiian Islands. Other exhibits include a turtle pool, a manta ray pool, live shark tank, whale displays, and a touch pool. ONE TRIP, MANY GENERATIONS

More travelers are spending vacation time as family time, according to a recent AAA survey. More than one-third of Americans plan on traveling with children, parents, in-laws or grandparents in the next year, a four-percent increase over last year’s survey.
