Since power strips and extension cords tend to be hidden behind large pieces of furniture, many people don’t see the safety hazard until it’s too late. Be sure to check behind entertainment centers, computer desks, and anywhere else you use a lot of electronics, and replace damaged cords. If you find that circuit breakers in your home trip periodically, evaluate outlets and power strips to make sure they are not overloaded. If you have more than two fixtures or appliances plugged into one outlet, use surge protectors. Safeguard your garage • Cost: Free. • Time: Up to an hour. • Materials needed: None. • Why you should do it: To reduce fire risk, make sure your lawn mower, gas-powered tools, paint, and extra portable gas tanks are as far away as possible from the pilot light of a furnace or water heater. Change the batteries in your smoke detectors, and place fire extinguishers in strategic places • Cost: $10–$15 for batteries, about $18 per extinguisher. Time: 15–45 minutes, depending on how many smoke detectors you have. • Materials needed: Batteries, a ladder, and possibly new equipment. • Why you should do it: Smoke alarms provide the best early warning signal of a fire in your house. In the kitchen, store a dry chemical Class B or Class ABC fire extinguisher near the stove to put out grease fires (never use water) and make sure it is new and operable. Distracted Driving Among Teenage Drivers: AAA Study Shows Results at an All-Time High I

n a world that revolves around social media, cell phones and texting become a lethal combination when teens pair those activities with driving. The results of a new study released by the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety proves that this issue is more worrisome than ever, citing that motor vehicle crashes are by far the number one killer of teens in the United States. “One of the main reasons car crashes are the number one killer of teens is because that age group lacks experience behind the wheel,” said Theresa Podguski, AAA Director of Legislative Affairs and Safety. “This study proves that distracted driving is a more serious problem than previously known, and strengthening our state laws will provide more protection for teen drivers,” she added. Using dash-cam video the study found that distraction was a factor in six out of 10 moderate-to-severe teen crashes, which is four times as many as official estimates based on police

reports. The most common forms of distraction leading up to a crash by a teen driver are interacting with passengers and using cell phones. Researchers analyzed the six seconds leading up to a crash in nearly 1,700 videos of teen drivers taken from in-vehicle event recorders. The results showed that distraction was a factor in 58 percent of all crashes studied; including 89 percent of road-departure crashes and 76 percent of rear-end crashes. Car crashes are the deadliest for teen drivers. In 2013, 100,000 drivers ages 16-19 were involved policereported crashes, causing nearly 383,000 injuries and 2,865 deaths. AAA believes many of these crashes can be prevented by understanding why the crash happened and addressing and eliminating known risk factors which include: having beginner drivers behind the wheel with other teens in the vehicle.

• Nighttime driving is the most dangerous for teens. More than one third of teen crashes occurred between the hours of 10:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m. • Distracted Driving. The newest study showed distraction was a factor in 58 percent of all crashes studied. • AAA found that communities with nighttime and passenger restrictions for teen drivers have 20 percent lower death and injury crash rates for 16-year-old drivers. Graduated driver licensing (GDL) laws allow new drivers to

gain practical experience in a relatively safe environment by restricting their exposure to risky situations. Thirtythree states have laws that prevent cell phone use for teens and 18 states have passenger restrictions meeting AAA’s recommendations. AAA suggests cell phone usage by teen drivers be restricted, passengers be limited to one non-family member for the first six months of obtaining their license, and driving between the hours of 10:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m. be banned.

Carmakers Are Sensing The Future of Mobility

COMMON SENSORS — Volvo plans to put self-driving cars on public roads in the next two years.

Predictions for next wave of automotive electronics Prices at the pump may be sensors and electric power-assisted dropping, but cars don’t live by cheap gas alone. It’s becoming abundantly clear that today’s vehicles — and especially tomorrow’s — will run on data. With anywhere from 60-100 different sensors on board the average new car — and estimates of twice that many within the next five years — the global auto industry is on track to integrate some 22 billion sensors annually by 2020. More sensors mean smarter and more sophisticated vehicles. While that may yield new opportunity, improved safety and happier drivers, it may also generate mountains of under-utilized data and potential threats to privacy. Today, state-of-the-art sensing, computing and communications systems are driving innovation in the automotive industry at an incredible pace. Signal information from the driver assist sensors can alert the driver to potential dangers, and actively assist with parking and lane keeping. Ford’s Active Park Assist, available on the 2015 F-150, uses two ultrasonic

steering to help drivers parallel park. The sensors measure the gap between two vehicles to determine if there is enough room. After confirming the F-150 can fit, the truck automatically steers into the space, while the driver operates the accelerator and brake pedals. BMW’s Remote Valet Parking Assistant takes things a step further. It uses laser scanners to navigate a vehicle through a parking garage without any driver. Once it locates a parking space, the vehicle locks itself and waits to be summoned by the driver via a Smartwatch application. The technology was demonstrated in the BMW i3 research vehicle at the 2015 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. Top areas for car technology innovation in the coming years will include radar and camera-based sensors that can help evaluate external factors affecting driver attention, and biometric sensors that measure stress levels for a more personalized response from driver assist technologies.

This will be key to self-driving cars in the future as the vehicle will need to determine whether the driver is capable of taking control when the conditions for driving autonomously are no longer present. This may be closer than you think. In February, Volvo announced Autopilot, a “complete, productionviable autonomous drive system” that uses onboard sensors and a cloud-based positioning system. The system employs

12 ultrasonic sensors, five cameras, a multiple beam laser scanner, and two long-range radars. All of the information collected by these sensors is compared to a continually updated 3D map and GPS data to give the car a complete picture of its surroundings. Volvo plans to place 100 self-driving cars in real traffic in Gothenburg, Sweden — with ordinary people in the driver’s seat — by 2017 as part of their Drive Me project.

Local Students Compete for Spot in Nationwide Auto Skills Competition T

he Ford/AAA Student Auto Skills competition is a nationwide automotive technology competition that offers millions of dollars in scholarships and prizes to high school juniors and seniors interested in pursuing careers as automotive service technicians. Approximately 12,000 students from across the U.S. will compete for the chance to represent their school and state in the National Finals at Ford Motor Company World Headquarters in Dearborn, Michigan June 7-9. The competition tests students’ automotive knowledge, workmanship and problem-solving abilities. The road to the National Finals requires much preparation. To earn their spots, students needed to successfully complete an online test of their automotive knowledge (in January). They then advance to the Pennsylvania State Finals (in May), where they will compete against other pairs of high school students in a handson competition similar to the national finals. “For more than three decades the Ford/AAA Student Auto Skills competition has brought together the country’s best future automotive technicians,” noted Joe Fosko, Manager - AAA Automotive Repair Solutions. “The competition is just one of the ways AAA and Ford demonstrate their commitment to helping students and building awareness of career opportunities in the automotive service industry.”

Identity theft can derail vacations quickly, but taking some precautions before and during travel can help consumers protect themselves: • Password-protect smartphones and other electronic devices. • Create strong passwords with a mix of uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers, and symbols on sensitive accounts accessible through electronic devices. • Avoid public Wi-Fi when possible; create your own Wi-Fi with a portable router and SIM card. • Delay social media posts that indicate you’re out of town; wait until you’re back from your trip to share your travel adventures. • Choose to pay with a credit card versus debit card; credit cards often offer better fraud protection. • Do your banking at the branch; ATMs in high-traffic tourist areas may put you at risk for skimming. • Alert your bank of your travel plans to avoid account holds and hassles.
