Tailgating puts you and everyone else at risk By Richard Hamilton Chairman, AAA East Central ailgating may be fun at football games, but it’s no picnic when you’re on the road. In law enforcement terminology tailgating is known as “following too closely” and this dangerous and ultimately futile practice is almost always the result of an aggressive driver, or the last resort of someone in a hurry. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) rear-end collisions account for nearly one-third of the over six million crashes each year. In most cases, the driver at fault was not maintaining a safe following distance. Studies have shown that tailgating saves no time. The laws of physics and of common sense dictate that you cannot go faster than the slowest car ahead of you. Unfortunately, poor planning and driver impatience increases everyone’s risk of being involved in a crash. Tailgaters will often attempt to intimidate other motorists into driving faster than their comfort level. Drivers who are being tailgated exhibit elevated heart rates, and other signs of stress, which in turn, can negatively affect their driving decisions. Other critical driving elements tailgaters sacrifice are perception and reaction times. Perception is the time we need to see and process a roadway hazard, while reaction time is the time needed for a driver’s body to physically

The American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials found that it takes an alert driver approximately two seconds to see a roadway hazard and react to it. At 60 mph, that’s 176 feet, over half the length of a football field. Stopping distance is also directly proportional to the size, weight and braking ability of your vehicle. If the car in front has better emergency braking, the tailgater will collide with it, even if they both apply their brakes at exactly the same moment. Large trucks need even more real estate to allow for safe braking. The average stopping dis-

AA is helping members protect themselves from the flu this season with a limitedtime discount. Members can receive a flu vaccine for just $15 (retail price $24.99) when they show their valid AAA card at 69 participating Kmart Pharmacy locations. That’s a savings of almost $10! The CDC reports that 5 to 20 percent of U.S. residents contract the flu each year on average, resulting in more than 200,000 hospitalizations and thousands of deaths annually. The CDC recommends annual vaccination (for ages 6 months and older) as the first and most effective step in preventing the flu. Brenda Kromer-Catanzaro, Kmart Pharmacy manager in Indiana, Pa., suggests that in addition to vaccination, people take the following steps to remain healthy this flu season: • Wash your hands often and thoroughly (for at least 20 seconds). If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer. • Cover your mouth and nose when sneezing or coughing. Always cough or sneeze into a tissue or your elbow – never into your hands. • Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth.

Taking unnecessary risks behind the wheel could result in a crash that may seriously injure or kill you or someone you care about. A much safer and saner approach is to back off, focus on your driving and allow more time to reach your destination. Maintain a safe distance from the vehicle in front of you. This gives you a better view of the road, and the other traffic, so you can anticipate problems and have more time to react. Follow other vehicles at a reasonable and prudent distance and as your speed increases, so should the gap between your car and the car ahead. A safe following distance requires a minimum of three seconds from the vehicle in front of you. More distance is necessary at night, in poor road or weather conditions, or where visibility is limited. Do yourself a favor and limit your tailgating activities to football games. And don’t be bullied into speeding up if someone is tailgating you. Move into another lane or turn off the road and allow the tailgater to pass. Never tap your brakes or lose your temper as this can quickly escalate into a road rage incident. Avoid eye contact and do not make or return rude gestures. Concentrate instead on the safety of you, your passengers and your vehicle.

The ups and downs of your auto insurance What’s behind increases and decreases in auto insurance premiums By Robin Jones ou’re getting ready to pay your auto insurance bill when you notice that your monthly premium has changed. But you haven’t filed a claim or added or removed a driver from your policy—events you know are likely to raise or lower your payments. So what happened? It may be something you haven’t even considered. Many factors come into play when your auto insurance premiums are calculated. Here are a few: Up: You bought a new car. Newer vehicles are typically more expensive to insure due to their higher value and increased repair costs. In addition, if you are financing a new car, you will likely be required to purchase collision and comprehensive coverage (which you may or may not have previously had with an older car). Up: Auto repair costs have increased. To achieve greater fuel economy, more automakers these days are building cars with lightweight materials such as aluminum, which can be more expensive to fix than steel. And the electronics in today’s cars are costly to replace. These factors help drive up repair costs, which get passed along to insurance companies. Toyota gets a little edgy with America’s best-selling car 2015 Camry shows its new fascia to the world

o what do you do when you have the best-selling car in the industry for 12 straight years? You find ways to make it better. That’s exactly what Toyota has done with the 2015 Camry. After selling almost a million copies since the current generation launched in 2011, or about one every 90 seconds, Toyota stripped it down to the chassis and rebuilt it from the ground up. Toyota designers and engineers re-imagined nearly every exterior surface of the car. Only the roof remains untouched. This new approach aims to build a more emotional connection with Toyota’s customers. Previous models had a reputation for being somewhat sedate — the Buick LeSabre of Generation X. Toyota calls this new design language “Waku-Doki” — a Japanese expression for “heart racing” or “adrenaline pumping.” Camry’s silhouette is much more expressive with a prominent front fascia and a gaping, honeycomb grille. Taking their cue from European brands like Audi, carmakers are paying a lot more attention to automobile “faces” these days, with expressions ranging from Kia’s blunt tiger nose, to Mazda’s enigmatic smile. Underneath the new exterior, the chassis and body structure have been buttressed with additional spot welds, enhancing rigidity for better ride qual-

AAA East Central supports ignition interlock legislation in Ohio
A
AA East Central is supporting Ohio House Bill 469, sponsored by Representative Terry Johnson (Dist. 90) and Representative Gary Scherer (Dist. 92). The lifesaving ignition interlock legislation known as Annie’s Law, is named after Annie Rooney, a Chillicothe, Ohio attorney who was killed by a drunk driver on July 3, 2013. Alcohol impaired driving is a significant public health issue. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), reported 10,322 fatalities in crashes involving a driver with a blood alcohol content of .08 or higher in 2012, accounting for 31 percent of all traffic fatalities for the year. This represents an average of one alcoholimpaired driving fatality every 51 minutes. In Ohio, 385 people were killed in crashes involving drunk drivers in 2012, representing 34 percent of all traffic fatalities in the state. AAA’s recommendation to require the use of IIDs for all convicted offenders is grounded in research which shows that IIDs are more effective than other methods at reducing re-arrest among convicted drunk drivers and keeping impaired drivers off the road. According to the Centers for Disease Control, ignition interlock devices (IIDs) are effective in reducing repeat drunk driving
offenses by 67 percent. Drivers must blow into the device and register a sober blood alcohol level or the car will not start. Currently, interlocks are only required for repeat offenders in Ohio. In addition to fewer arrests, drivers with IIDs also have fewer alcoholinvolved crashes than drivers who simply had their licenses suspended. In fact, research suggests 50 percent to 75 percent of DUI offenders with suspended licenses continue to drive and have more alcohol-involved crashes than drivers with an ignition interlock device. Nearly eight in 10 Americans support requiring ignition interlocks for all convicted DUI offenders, even if it’s their first conviction according to the 2012 Traffic Safety Culture Index conducted by the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety. Nearly all (97 percent) surveyed find it unacceptable for a driver to get behind the wheel when they have had too much to drink. “Requiring lifesaving ignition interlocks for first-time offenders will save lives,” said Theresa Podguski, director of legislative affairs for AAA East Central. “Impaired driving affects all road users, and we look forward to working alongside the state legislature to eliminate the number one killer on our roadways.”

Traffic signals have a colorful past and a brighter future It’s been stop and go for this Cleveland invention for 100 years
I
nstead of cursing the next time you’re stopped at a red light, offer a word of thanks to James Hoge. The Cleveland inventor is widely regarded as the father of the modern traffic signal and 2014 marks its 100th anniversary. Hoge’s “Municipal Traffic Control System” was installed at the intersection of the city’s Euclid Avenue and East 105th Street in August, 1914. Prior to that, gaslit traffic lights had been erected outside the British Houses of Parliament in 1868, but the project was quickly abandoned after the light exploded less than a month later. Hoge’s light had just two colors — red and green — with the words “stop” and “move”. A policeman controlled the system from a nearby hut, ringing a buzzer to warn people of the impending signal change. The Cleveland Automobile Club, now AAA East Central, was quick to recognize the benefits of the new device. “This system,” it noted in the August, 1914 edition of The Motorist, “is perhaps destined to revolutionize the handling of traffic in congested city streets.” Traffic signals grew more colorful in 1920, when Detroit police officer William Potts, invented an automatic four-way system with red, green, and amber lights. Today, traffic lights feature optical signaling systems that can evaluate

Thanks to a new control device from Siemens, cities can manage their traffic lights from a private “cloud” and correct problems without turning traffic lights off, using a smart phone, tablet, or computer. Even the traditional incandescent
bulbs are giving way to LEDs. They consume up to 90 percent less energy and have a longer life expectancy. While incandescent bulbs need to be replaced every six months, LED lights only need to be changed every ten years. A city operating about 700 intersections can save more than one million dollars in energy costs by converting traffic lights to LED technology. In addition, LED traffic lights are much more visible in direct sunlight, improving traffic safety. The next big innovation for traffic lights will be interconnected communication between people, infrastructure and vehicles of all kinds. If there is a traffic jam your smart phone could recommend an alternate route in order to reach a destination the fastest way. The traffic light will not only take an active role in this communication, it will be one of the most important components. Soon, connected cars could let you know what speed to drive in order to hit a sequence of green lights, warn you of hazards and congestion, or even request a green light at an intersection ahead.

The 327-page report includes preliminary estimates of safety benefits that show two safety applications — Left Turn Assist (LTA) and Intersection Movement Assist (IMA) — could prevent up to 592,000 crashes and save 1,083 lives per year. Put another way, V2V technology could help drivers avoid more than half of these types of crashes that would otherwise occur by providing advance warning. LTA warns drivers not to turn left in front of another vehicle traveling in the opposite direction and IMA warns them if it is not safe to enter an intersection due to a high probability of colliding with one or more vehicles. Additional applications could also help drivers avoid imminent danger through forward collision, blind spot, do not pass, and stop light/stop sign warnings. While not foolproof V2V technology has the potential to be fused with existing vehicle safety features to further improve the effectiveness of many crash avoidance safety systems and serve as a building block for a driverless vehicle. It does not involve collecting or exchanging personal information or tracking drivers or their vehicles. With the release of this report, NHTSA is signaling auto manufacturers that it is ready to move forward with V2V technology and looking to gather input as it works to deliver a notice of proposed rulemaking by 2016.

Halloween can bring increased risks to pedestrians It’s no trick keeping trick-or-treaters safe with these tips

and children should look up and pay attention to their surroundings while walking. Texting and social media can wait. If you need to use your cell phone, walk to a safe area away from the street before doing so.
ach Halloween, little superheroes, ghosts and witches crisscross the neighborhood in search of candy and sweets. Traffic safety is the furthest thing from these children’s minds. “Because excited trick-or-treaters often forget about safety, adults must be even more alert,” said Teresa Thomas, AAA East Central director of public affairs. “Drivers should to be especially vigilant between the hours of 4 p.m. and midnight, when pedestrians are most vulnerable,” she added. Safe Kids Worldwide reports that on average, children are more than twice as likely be struck by a vehicle and killed on Halloween than on any other night of the year. To keep roadways safer for pedestrians this Halloween, AAA offers these tips for parents and motorists.
Parents
Trick-or-treat together. AAA recommends that parents accompany young trick-or-treaters at least until age 12. Choose costumes wisely. Children are small, and often difficult to see even in well-lit situations. Make sure your child is visible by selecting a light-colored costume, or by adding reflective tape. Choose disguises that don’t obstruct vision and opt for non-toxic face paint instead of masks. Check and adjust the length of costumes to avoid tripping.
Motorists
IN THE DARK — Dark costumes can make trick-or-treaters harder to see. Make a plan. Review trick-or-treating precautions, including pedestrian and traffic safety rules. Plan and discuss the route your trick-or-treaters will follow. Teach children to stop only at well-lit houses and to never enter a stranger’s home or garage. Stay on the sidewalk. Always walk on sidewalks, if available. If there are no sidewalks, walk as far to the left of the road as possible, facing traffic.
Shine a light. Give everyone a glow stick or flashlight to help them see and be seen by drivers. Cross with caution. Parents and trick-or-treaters should cross streets only at the corner, and never between parked cars or mid-block. Look left, right, and left again, and be sure that approaching cars come to a complete stop before stepping into the roadway. Put down the phones. Both parents
Avoid neighborhood shortcuts. If possible, avoid cutting through residential streets where trick-or-treaters are likely to be present. Slow down. Drive at least 5 mph below the posted speed limit to give yourself extra time to react to children who may dart into the street. According to the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, a pedestrian is more than twice as likely to be killed if they’re hit by a car traveling at 35 mph compared to 25 mph. What seems like a small difference can be the difference between life and death. Watch for children. In dark costumes, trick-or-treaters may be harder to see at night. Watch for children walking on roadways, medians and curbs. They may not be paying attention to traffic and cross the street mid-block or between cars. Take extra caution when entering or exiting driveways or alleys. Remove distractions. Avoid any distractions that may you’re your attention away from driving, such as cell phones or in-car entertainment and navigation systems.
