What’s New? Disney World’s homage to the 1937 classic animated film “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs” debuts this year! The indoor & outdoor Seven Dwarfs Mine Train is a family-friendly coaster (not a thrill ride) that takes guests of the Magic Kingdom’s New Fantasyland through the mine where the dwarfs spend their days digging for gems. The opening of this steel roller coaster will wrap up the largest expansion in the theme park’s history. Located behind Cinderella Castle, on the right after entering the Castle Courtyard gates leading into the Enchanted Forest, the ride starts in the dwarfs’ cottage, then takes guests on a rollicking, musical voyage into the mine where a million “diamonds” shine. The Mine Train will feature first-of-its-kind vehicles that swing back and forth, responding to every twist and turn of the track. The journey will be accompanied by music from the film and animated figures of Snow White and the Dwarfs. Turn to page 12 for Disney Month details & restrictions!

Drowsy drivers a factor in one of six fatal crashes By Richard Hamilton Chairman, AAA East Central ess than half of Americans say they get a good night’s sleep but the driver’s seat of your car is no place for a cat nap. Drowsy driving can be just as deadly as driving under the influence, but crashes are often under-reported due to the inherent difficulties of attributing crashes to sleepiness. Now a new report by the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety offers some eye-opening conclusions. According to a survey of 2,035 motorists conducted as part of the AAA Foundation’s 2013 Traffic Safety Culture Index, more than a quarter of those polled (28.3 percent) admitted they drove despite being so tired that they had difficulty keeping their eyes open. An earlier study found two in five (41 percent) admitted they had “fallen asleep or nodded off” at least once while behind the wheel. Just like alcohol and drugs, fatigue impairs judgment, mood, reaction times and driving performance. Studies by the National Sleep Foundation indicate that being awake for more than 20 hours results in an impairment equal to a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of 0.08%, the legal limit in all states. Although typically associated with long distance driving, fatigue can set in at any time. Contributing factors include emotional stress, illness, boredom and sun glare. Overeating, drinking alcoholic beverages, or riding in an overheated or very cold vehicle can compound the effects.

L

Richard Hamilton Sleep-related crashes are nearly twice as common among young people, who tend to stay up late, and sleep too little. Shift workers, those with untreated sleep disorders and commercial travelers are all at greater risk. Men are almost twice as likely to fall asleep at the wheel. Many of us tend to underestimate the negative effects associated with fatigue and sleep deprivation, or maybe we’re just too tired to recognize the symptoms. Unlike alcohol-related crashes, there are no blood, breath, or other objective tests for sleepiness. A recent analysis of National Highway Traffic Safety Administration crash data estimates that about one in six (16.5 percent) deadly crashes,

involve a driver who is drowsy. These numbers suggest that the impact on motor vehicle crashes has not been fully appreciated. AAA’s research and educational initiatives into drowsy driving began in 1993, as part of the AAA Foundation’s comprehensive “Wake Up!” campaign and this new report should serve as a wake up call. It also underscores the importance of educating drivers on the simple, yet effective measures they can take to prevent a possible tragedy. What can you do to prevent fatigue from making you another crash statistic? Start any trip by getting enough sleep the night before — at least seven hours. Schedule a break every two hours or every 100 miles. If you can, have another person ride with you, who can share the driving. Learn to anticipate your circadian rhythms — or internal clocks — and avoid driving during your body’s natural downtime. Be on the alert for signs of sleepiness such as trouble keeping your eyes open, difficulty paying attention and drifting out of your lane. If you notice any of these danger signs, stop for a rest and if needed, a quick nap. Get some exercise — it helps you become more alert quickly — and for an extra boost, drink a caffeinated beverage. AAA urges all motorists to pay attention to these warning signals. Unfortunately, too many have adopted the “I’m tired, but I can make it” mentality, often at their peril or the peril of others. It’s time to put that notion to rest, once and for all.

Portugal & its Islands Portugal is hot...and getting hotter. It’s fast becoming the last “undiscovered” destination in Western Europe. Those who have discovered its considerable assets are having a hard time keeping it to themselves! In Lisbon, explore the Moorish Alfama Quarter, Jeronimo’s Monastery (a UNESCO World Heritage Site), the Monument to the Discoveries and the Tower of Belem (UWHS). See Sintra (UWHS), summer residence of kings for 6 centuries. Then enjoy Portugal’s “Riviera” and dinner with wine and fado, soulful music recognized by UNESCO as an Intangible ©STEVANZZ/FOTOLIA.COM Cultural Heritage. On the Silver Coast, see sleepy villages, rich vineyards and age-old castles. See Fatima’s famous Basilica and magnificent Batalha Monastery (UWHS). The truly remote Azores lie some 900 miles west of Lisbon. Their volcanic birth created mountains and valleys, pocket lakes resting in ancient craters, hot springs, fumaroles and thermal fountains. Seaside villages, white-washed houses guarded by medieval city walls, bustling harbors and cities overflowing with architectural treasures — these, and Europe’s only pineapple and tea plantations, make the Azores all the more inviting. About 600 miles southwest of Lisbon, the resort island of Madeira, “pearl of the Atlantic,” boasts a subtropical climate, majestic mountain ranges, volcanic cave, traditional villages and age-old ways of life — fishing, wickerwork, embroidery and world-renowned wine making.

Royal Caribbean introduces new Quantum class ships Why cruise travel may never be the same again

T

he cruise industry is on the verge of a quantum leap with the launch of Royal Caribbean’s new Quantum class of ships. It’s a dramatic move forward, with game-changing “firsts” such as a skydiving simulator and an observation capsule that lifts guests more than 300 feet in the air. Quantum of the Seas makes her debut in November 2014, followed by sister-ship Anthem of the Seas in spring 2015. These architectural marvels at sea will span 18 decks, and carry over 4,000 passengers. Transformative venues on the 167,800-ton ships include the industry’s biggest indoor sports and entertainment complex and the cruise line’s largest and most advanced staterooms with upscale customizable layouts and larger, more intuitive storage solutions. And every one of the 2,090 staterooms will have a view with “virtual balconies.” Inside cabins will become outside cabins, thanks to an 80-inch LED projection screen mounted on the wall that streams live images from cameras mounted on the sides of the ship. Ever wonder what it feels like to freefall from 10,000 feet without jumping out of an airplane? RipCord by iFly will be the first skydiving experience at sea. Everyone from first-time flyers to seasoned skydivers can enjoy the adrenalin rush of skydiving risk-free. After a short training session you’ll get suited up and before you can say “Geronimo”

HITTING NEW HEIGHTS — North Star will take guests more than 300 feet above the ocean. you’ll be floating on a column of air inside a 23-foot-tall transparent glass flight chamber on the top deck. A marvel of maritime engineering, North Star will take guests to new heights — literally. The jewel-shaped, glass capsule will transport you on a spectacular 15 minute journey more than 300 feet above the ocean. The view alone is worth the trip with unobstructed vistas of sunrises, sunsets, ports of call and the boundless ocean.

Signature Royal Caribbean venues such as the Rock Climbing Wall; FlowRider surf simulator; and DreamWorks entertainment will all be back on Quantum class. The ships will also take a quantum leap forward in their culinary offerings with the most flexible dining options and more specialty restaurants than ever before. SeaPlex, the flexible sports and entertainment venue, will inspire guests of all ages to cut loose and connect with their playful sides. Fly through the air on the circus school’s flying trapeze, or shoot some hoops on a full-size regulation court. By night, the first-ever bumper cars at sea deliver midway-style fun and excitement. Inspired by the spirit of rock ‘n roll, Music Hall is the place to enjoy intimate live performances. Rebellious and edgy, Music Hall’s two-story design will also host DJs, theme night parties, billiards and more. The multi-level Two70° is named for its 270-degree views through floorto-ceiling glass walls spanning almost three decks at the stern of the ship. Amenities include nighttime aerial entertainment and an ice bar. While Quantum of the Seas may seem like a destination unto itself,

Royal Caribbean will be steering her to some of the most storied ports in the Caribbean. Sailing out of the New York Harbor from her Cape Liberty homeport, Quantum of the Seas will offer 7- to 12-night Bahamas, Eastern and Southern Caribbean itineraries during the winter 2014/15 season. All feature a stop at Labadee, Royal Caribbean’s private beach destination. A secluded tropical paradise, Labadee sits along Haiti’s mountainous north coast on the island of Hispaniola. Once the home of the “boucaniers,” the original pirates of the Caribbean, this 260-acre wooded peninsula features five spectacular beaches. Columbus Cove Beach offers a variety of family-friendly attractions including water slides. Nearby Splash Bash is a pirate-themed water playground, featuring a “sunken” pirate ship. Labadee Town Square boasts a popular artisan market and a festive atmosphere that comes alive with music, folkloric dancers and more. Adventure-hungry guests will find a fresh variety of activities including the new Dragon’s Tail Coaster, a high-speed joyride through 2,232 feet of tropical flora and rock formations. The Dragon’s Breath Flightline, offers memorable aerial views of Labadee’s coral reefs and crystal blue waters for those brave enough to take the wild ride down a 2,633-foot cable zip-line. No matter what your tolerance for adventure guests on Labadee can discover the area’s picturesque terrain with tours like the High Speed Coastal Cruise & Swim excursion and the Discover Haiti Coastal Cruise. Labadee’s Wave Jet Adventure offers guided journeys down one of the wildest coasts in the Caribbean via personal SeaDoo watercraft. Venture up to Dragon’s Rock on the tip of the island. When the surf comes in, it really does sound like the breath of a dragon.

Travel Europe’s original highways on a river cruise Tulips and Windmills on a Viking River Cruise

M

ore travelers are discovering that river cruising is one of the most comfortable and intriguing ways to explore Europe. River cruising allows up-closeand-personal access to cosmopolitan cities and quaint villages—because so many towns were built along these medieval highways. Travelers will also appreciate the value. Most river cruises are priced in U.S. dollars and all-inclusive pricing typically includes accommodations, all onboard meals, daily, guided shore excursions and more. Sail into the very heart of cities like Amsterdam or St. Petersburg, then walk right off the ship into the center of town. River cruising has become so popular that Viking River Cruises — the world’s largest river cruise company — launched six new vessels last year as part of company’s $250 million fleet development program. Merging cutting-edge technology with Old World elegance, Viking’s new Longships feature 190 staterooms with more full-size rooms and full-size verandas than other European river cruise vessels. Three-quarters feature a veranda, French balcony with floor-to-ceiling sliding glass doors, or both. Tulips & Windmills is the ultimate 10-day spring sojourn through the Low Countries. Explore Amsterdam’s cosmopolitan atmosphere and world-famous museums. Experience Belgium’s Golden

IN BRUGES — Bruges is known as “the Venice of the North.” Age in historic Antwerp and the lovely patrician cities of Ghent and Bruges. Learn why the windmills were built and see how they work on an actual working windmill tour. Amsterdam gives you the impression of having stepped into a 17th century canvas by Vermeer. Linden bordered canals are lined with stately homes topped by graceful stepped gables. From Amsterdam, sail across the Ijsselmeer (once known as the Zuiderzee) to the ancient shipping vil-

lage of Hoorn. Enjoy a guided walk through the cobbled streets and visit the town’s main square, which dates back to Holland’s Golden Age. In Arnhem, take a journey to 17thcentury Paleis Het Loo, the Dutch royal family’s summer residence for more than 300-years. A guided tour offers an intimate look at the sumptuously furnished rooms and beautifully landscaped gardens. The Flemish capital of Antwerp is famous for the Cathedral of Our Lady,

with its three monumental altarpieces painted by Peter Paul Rubens. The city’s Grand Square is surrounded by the Golden Age Town Hall and Steen Castle, Antwerp’s oldest building. Sometimes referred to as “the Venice of the North” Bruges is famous for its canals and medieval architecture, most of which remains intact. Highlights of this UNESCO World Heritage Site include the Basilica of the Holy Blood, a 12th century Gothic church, and the Belfort, a 272-foot-high tower prominently featured in the 2008 film In Bruges. During the Middle Ages, Ghent was one of Europe’s wealthiest and most powerful cities. The town’s rich history and past is evident in the imposing buildings and squares. The Castle of the Counts was constructed in 1180 with 6-foot-thick walls, battlements, and turrets and a fully-equipped torture chamber. TIPTOE THROUGH THE TULIPS

Keukenhof Gardens, near Amsterdam in Holland’s Bulb Region, is the world’s largest floral park. Visitors can admire the stunning floral beauty at both indoor and outdoor exhibits of millions of blooms. FOR MORE INFORMATION

Do you know how to handle an accident? What to do if you are involved in a car crash

A

ccording to The National Highway Transportation Safety Administration, there are more than six million U.S. motor vehicle crashes per year reported in the United States. The odds are that you’ll find yourself involved in a vehicle accident at some point in your life. Would you know what to do? Once the initial shock wears off and you’ve checked for injury, attempt to exit your vehicle. You might need to use a window if your door has been damaged. If your vehicle is drivable, move it to a public location. From there, you’ll be able to safely exit the vehicle and report the accident. Moving the vehicle is a good idea if there’s an immediate danger like being hit again on a busy interstate. Do keep in mind that some states require you to stay on the scene. In the event that your vehicle ends up in water, stay calm. You won’t be able to open the door due to the pressure from the water if the vehicle submerges. Take a deep breath and roll down the window to escape. If the electric windows won’t work, then break the window by hitting it with an object or kicking it. Dial 911 to report the crash. In most cases the dispatcher will automatically know your location using GPS technol-

ODDS ARE AGAINST YOU — There are more than six million motor vehicle crashes reported each year. ogy. Otherwise, look for mileage markers or directional signage. Most insurance carriers recommend the following steps following an accident: • Take note of how many passengers are in the other vehicles involved in the accident, as this will help prevent the future addition of passengers during insurance scams. • Collect the full name, insurance infor-

mation, and home address of all other drivers involved in the accident. You should also provide your information to the other driver(s). • Write a brief summary of the accident, recording as many details as possible - the make, model and year of the vehicles involved; the time of accident; and weather conditions. • Take photos. Must of us carry cell phones with the ability to take pho-

tographs. Pictures really DO tell a story. Collect the names and contact information of any witnesses, especially if you feel something or someone other than yourself caused the accident. While it’s okay to express concern over what happened, you should never admit that the accident was your fault or claim liability. Have your insurance information, driver’s license, and vehicle registration available for the police. Information will be collected and the officer will ask all the drivers what happened and record the account(s). Ask for the police report so that you can give it to your insurance carrier. Contact your insurance agent or carrier as soon as possible. Most major insurance companies have a 24-hour phone number for claim reports. FOR MORE INFORMATION

Central Susquehanna Valley Transportation Project closer Thruway project funding included in transportation bill

I

n November, Governor Corbett signed into law a long-awaited and much debated transportation funding bill to address the thirtysix percent of our major roads rated in poor or mediocre condition and the forty-four percent of Pennsylvania bridges, with an average age of fifty years old, that are structurally deficient or functionally obsolete. The legislation will invest an additional $2.3 to $2.4 billion into the state’s roads and bridges by the fifth year of the plan. Included in the package is funding for the Central Susquehanna Valley Transportation Project (CSVT). After more than 40 years of planning, PennDOT is committing to completing design and construction of the entire CSVT project, which is estimated to cost $615 million (based on year of expenditure). The proposed project is a fourlane highway 13 miles long connecting Route 147 in Northumberland County, passing through Union County, to Routes 11/15 in Snyder County at the north end of the Selinsgrove Bypass. The northern section would cross the West Branch Susquehanna River on a new bridge and tie into Route 15 near Winfield. The CSVT, often referred to as the (future) Shamokin Dam Bypass, is one missing link for a four-lane, limited-access Route 15 corridor from I-86 in New York to I-81 at Harrisburg. Based on the current schedule,

FIXING THE BOTTLENECK — Proposed route of the Central Susquehanna Valley Transportation Project. PennDOT anticipates being able to open bids on the first of several construction contracts by late 2015. The entire project is estimated to be completed and opened to traffic by 2024. Completing the CSVT will improve safety, reduce congestion and by creating jobs, provide a much needed economic stimulus to the region. While the benefits of this project may be clear, other parts of the bill have resulted in some uncertainty, particularly as it relates changes to the Gas

Tax. The Gas Tax Pennsylvania motorists pay for a gallon of gas at the pump consists of two major components: a 12-cent Liquid Fuels tax and an Oil Company Franchise Tax (OCFT) which is a tax paid by the oil companies based on the wholesale price of gas. The new law completely eliminates the 12-cent Liquid Fuels tax. The Oil Company Franchise Tax has been based on the average price of gas in 1983 and capped at $1.25 a gallon. The new law removes the 1983 cap on the tax to reflect cur-

rent oil prices however the uncapping is phased in over 5 years —1/3 in 2014; 1/3 in 2015; 1/3 in 2017 — and is not fully implemented until 2017. The Governor’s Transportation Funding Advisory Commission estimated uncapping the OCFT would initially cost drivers an additional 42 cents per week, increasing to $1.94 weekly cost in the fifth year. Unlike some other states, Pennsylvania does not use income or sales taxes to fund roads and bridges. Fuel taxes provide the majority of funding for roads and bridges and state police highway patrol. Consider the cost to motorists if funding was not available to repair roads and bridges and make safety improvements to our roadways. AAA’s concern for safety was a major consideration for supporting additional highway funding. A study by the Pacific Institute for Research and Evaluation concluded that deficient roadway conditions are a factor in 53 percent of deaths resulting from motor vehicle crashes each year. According to a report by The Road Information Program, driving on deficient roads costs Pennsylvania motorists $9.4 billion per year in the form of extra operating costs, lost time and fuel due to congestion-related delays. Clearly, the cost of doing nothing to address our deficient roads and bridges is significantly higher.

Catching swing fever in Myrtle Beach Say good-bye to snow and hello sunshine on the Grand Strand

M

yrtle Beach isn’t just about the beach anymore. It’s a family-friendly mash-up of sun, sea, golf, and eye-popping attractions, all served up with a side order of Southern hospitality. Located at the hub of South Carolina’s Grand Strand, Myrtle Beach presides over a pristine 60-mile ribbon of coastline that stretches from Little River to Pawleys Island, along the South Carolina coast. Visitors can catch some rays on the beach, take in a show, tee off on a Low Country links, or people watch on the Boardwalk. Located in the heart of town, the mile-long boardwalk offers memorable oceanfront views as it unravels along the shore. Attractions include the Myrtle Beach Skywheel, a 200-ft.-high observation wheel with 42 glass gondolas providing breathtaking views of the coastline. Golf is played year-round on the more than 100 area courses, but spring and fall are the peak times due to weather and off-season room rates. Scotland may have invented golf but Myrtle Beach invented the golf package. The Legends recreates its own wee bit of Scotland with three links-style courses and a clubhouse, eerily reminiscent of the Royal & Ancient in St.

Visitors can take a walk on the wild side at Alligator Adventure, at Barefoot Landing, one of the largest exotic reptile parks in the world. The nearby 2,000-seat Alabama Theatre, is home to One The Show, voted the #1 area show by Myrtle Beach visitors. The Market Common is a 114-acre urban village with an upscale combination of retail, residential, and recreational opportunities, complimented by beautifully landscaped parks and a public square. Sculptor Anna Hyatt Huntington and her very wealthy husband Archer, created Brookgreen Gardens in the 1930s, on the site of four abandoned rice plantations. How to be a “roll model” on your winter vacation Avoid all the heavy lifting from excess baggage

T

ravel during peak vacation times can mean long lines and hurried sprints through sprawling terminals. It also can mean neck, wrist, back and shoulder pain, and even injury, from carrying and lifting heavy luggage. Most of us bring more than we need when we travel, and end up having to lift and carry luggage that is unnecessarily heavy. With so many airlines charging fees for excess baggage, the old traveler’s axiom “pack your bags, then take out half” has never been more apt. It’s also much safer. In fact, according to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), there were 53,790 luggage-related injuries in 2012. “Travel can be uniquely stressful and physically taxing, especially when transporting heavy and cumbersome luggage,” said orthopaedic surgeon and American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) spokesperson Warner L. Pinchback, MD. ”To ensure that you arrive at your destination free from pain, it’s important to know how to optimally choose, pack, carry and lift your luggage.” To avoid luggage-related injury and pain, AAOS offers the following safety tips: • When purchasing new luggage, look for a sturdy, light piece with wheels and a handle.

HEAVY LIFTING — More than 50,000 people were treated for injuries related to luggage in 2012.

Pack lightly. When possible, pack items in a few smaller bags instead of one large luggage piece. Many airlines restrict carry-on luggage weighing more than 40 pounds. When lifting luggage onto a platform or into a car trunk, stand alongside of it, bend at your knees, not your waist, lift with your leg muscles, then grasp the handle and straighten up. Once you have lifted your luggage, hold it close to your body. When placing luggage in an overhead compartment, first lift it onto the top •

of the seat. Then, place your hands on the left and right sides of the suitcase and lift it up. If your luggage has wheels, make sure the wheel-side is set in the compartment first. Once wheels are inside, put one hand atop the luggage and push it to the back of the compartment. Do not twist your body when lifting and carrying luggage. Instead, point your toes in the direction you are headed, and then turn your entire body in that direction. Don’t rush when lifting or carrying a

suitcase. If it is too heavy or an awkward shape, get help. Do not carry heavier pieces of luggage for long periods of time. If it is too heavy, make sure to check luggage when traveling rather than carrying it on a plane, train or bus. If you use using a backpack, make sure it has two padded and adjustable shoulder straps. Choose one with several compartments to secure varioussized items. Slinging a backpack over one shoulder does not allow weight to be distributed evenly, which can cause muscle strain. Carry – don’t drag – your luggage when climbing the stairs. DON’T TAKE IT WITH YOU

• Plan ahead so you pack exactly what you need and nothing extra. • The larger the bag, the more weight it will hold, putting you at greater risk for injury. • Pack at least a day in advance so you have time to edit down and still have what you need and want. • Weigh each packed bag on your bathroom scale before leaving for the airport and lighten the load to less than 40 pounds • The chances of injury are even greater when a person has been sitting still for a long period of time (as when on a plane).
