Tailgating puts you and everyone else at risk By Gary Beck, Sr. President, Westmoreland Region ailgating may be fun at football games, but it’s no picnic when you’re on the road. In law enforcement terminology tailgating is known as “following too closely” and this dangerous and ultimately futile practice is almost always the result of an aggressive driver, or the last resort of someone in a hurry. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) rear-end collisions account for nearly one-third of the over six million crashes each year. In most cases, the driver at fault was not maintaining a safe following distance. Studies have shown that tailgating saves no time. The laws of physics and of common sense dictate that you cannot go faster than the slowest car ahead of you. Unfortunately, poor planning and driver impatience increases everyone’s risk of being involved in a crash. Tailgaters will often attempt to intimidate other motorists into driving faster than their comfort level. Drivers who are being tailgated exhibit elevated heart rates, and other signs of stress, which in turn, can negatively affect their driving decisions. Other critical driving elements tailgaters sacrifice are perception and reaction times. Perception is the time we need to see and process a roadway hazard, while reaction time is the time needed for a driver’s body to physically

T

Gary Beck react to the brain’s perception. The American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials found that it takes an alert driver approximately two seconds to see a roadway hazard and react to it. At 60 mph, that’s 176 feet, over half the length of a football field. Stopping distance is also directly proportional to the size, weight and braking ability of your vehicle. If the car in front has better emergency braking, the tailgater will collide with it, even if they both apply their brakes at exactly the same moment. Large trucks need even more real estate to allow for safe braking. The average stopping dis-

AA is helping members protect themselves from the flu this season with a limitedtime discount. Members can receive a flu vaccine for just $15 (retail price $24.99) when they show their valid AAA card at 69 participating Kmart Pharmacy locations. That’s a savings of almost $10! The CDC reports that 5 to 20 percent of U.S. residents contract the flu each year on average, resulting in more than 200,000 hospitalizations and thousands of deaths annually. The CDC recommends annual vaccination (for ages 6 months and older) as the first and most effective step in preventing the flu. Brenda Kromer-Catanzaro, Kmart Pharmacy manager in Indiana, Pa., suggests that in addition to vaccination, people take the following steps to remain healthy this flu season: • Wash your hands often and thoroughly (for at least 20 seconds). If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer. • Cover your mouth and nose when sneezing or coughing. Always cough or sneeze into a tissue or your elbow – never into your hands. • Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth.

tance for a loaded tractor-trailer traveling at 55 mph (in ideal conditions) is 196 feet, compared with 133 feet for a passenger vehicle. Taking unnecessary risks behind the wheel could result in a crash that may seriously injure or kill you or someone you care about. A much safer and saner approach is to back off, focus on your driving and allow more time to reach your destination. Maintain a safe distance from the vehicle in front of you. This gives you a better view of the road, and the other traffic, so you can anticipate problems and have more time to react. Follow other vehicles at a reasonable and prudent distance and as your speed increases, so should the gap between your car and the car ahead. A safe following distance requires a minimum of three seconds from the vehicle in front of you. More distance is necessary at night, in poor road or weather conditions, or where visibility is limited. Do yourself a favor and limit your tailgating activities to football games. And don’t be bullied into speeding up if someone is tailgating you. Move into another lane or turn off the road and allow the tailgater to pass. Never tap your brakes or lose your temper as this can quickly escalate into a road rage incident. Avoid eye contact and do not make or return rude gestures. Concentrate instead on the safety of you, your passengers and your vehicle.

Avoid close contact with people who are sick. • Clean and disinfect all frequently touched surfaces and objects, such as tables, countertops, desks, keyboards, doorknobs and mobile devices. • Stay home from work or school if you aren’t feeling well. This will help prevent spreading illness to others. Flu shots are free to Medicare Part B-eligible patients with proof of insurance. Kmart Pharmacy will process most major insurances for eligibility to determine your best option. The AAA member discounted price for flu shots at Kmart Pharmacy is valid through November 30, 2014. The ups and downs of your auto insurance What’s behind increases and decreases in auto insurance premiums By Robin Jones ou’re getting ready to pay your auto insurance bill when you notice that your monthly premium has changed. But you haven’t filed a claim or added or removed a driver from your policy—events you know are likely to raise or lower your payments. So what happened? It may be something you haven’t even considered. Many factors come into play when your auto insurance premiums are calculated. Here are a few: Up: You bought a new car. Newer vehicles are typically more expensive to insure due to their higher value and increased repair costs. In addition, if you are financing a new car, you will likely be required to purchase collision and comprehensive coverage (which you may or may not have previously had with an older car). Up: Auto repair costs have increased. To achieve greater fuel economy, more automakers these days are building cars with lightweight materials such as aluminum, which can be more expensive to fix than steel. And the electronics in today’s cars are costly to replace. These factors help drive up repair costs, which get passed along to insurance companies. If repair costs go up enough, insurers may be forced to increase their premiums accordingly. Down: You bundled your homeowners insurance with your auto pol-

car is garaged when determining your premium. If claims in your region have gone up significantly, your insurer might adjust the premium for everyone in your neighborhood, regardless of your personal claim history. For example, if there’s a spike in auto thefts in your area, you might pay more on your insurance due to the increase in claims, regardless of whether or not your vehicle was stolen. Of course, if you have a good driving record, your personal premium will reflect your eligiGOING UP — Newer vehicles are typically more bility for a good driver expensive to insure. discount of at least 20 percent. icy. Up or down: You’ve had your driver’s license for a certain number of years. Auto insurance premiums for inexperienced drivers are generally higher, because the rookies on the road have more accidents than veteran drivers do. Accordingly, as you amass driving experience, your rates generally go down. But at a certain point—usually after about five decades behind the wheel—driver claims start to increase again, and premiums go up in turn. Down: Your teenage driver had a good report card or just left for college. A good-student discount on your auto insurance is another reason to encourage your teens to excel in school. In addition, if your child is not planning to drive while away at college, you may be eligible for a student-away discount, which provides year-round coverage for your student at a greatly reduced premium.

Sharing the magic at the Walt Disney World Resort More families opting for multigenerational vacations

W

alt Disney once said that Walt Disney World Resort’s many attractions were designed for those “from 3-to-93” and it’s no less true today. More multigenerational travelers—defined as travel by people belonging to three or more generations—are opting for shared, family-together experiences and no place does families better than Disney. Kids will be drawn to the fantastic New Fantasyland, the largest expansion project in Magic Kingdom history. It features an eye-popping array of attractions including Under the Sea — Journey of the Little Mermaid, and Princess Fairytale Hall. The enchanting new home to Cinderella, Rapunzel and the princesses is located in the Castle Courtyard. Pass the intricate tiara that graces the entryway and be immersed in their world. Anyone who ever wanted to run away and join the circus should treat themselves to Storybook Circus, where families can share an array of fun-filled games and interactive wonders inside the Big Top. The sound of a calliope leads guests to the Dumbo the Flying Elephant ride. Inspired by the Disney animated film classic Snow White, the Seven Dwarfs Mine Train is rollicking familystyle coaster with just the right blend of heart, humor, and thrill.

FAMILY TIES — Shared vacation experiences can bring families closer together. The new Disney Festival of Fantasy Parade rolls down Main Street, U.S.A in a breathtaking fusion of floats, and Cirque du Soleil-style theatrics. The caravan of characters includes Anna and Elsa from “Frozen,” a pageantry of Disney princesses, and a 53-foot, firebreathing Steampunk-inspired Dragon from Sleeping Beauty. Parents and grandparents were once kids too, and at Walt Disney World Resort they can be kids all over again. From daytime experiences in the theme

parks, to some midday R&R, and special nighttime events, grownups will find Walt Disney World Resort the perfect fountain of youth. Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort & Spa recalls Henry Flagler’s lavish, 19th century beach resorts with gabled roofs, canary palms and richly colored gardens. In the afternoon, adults can relax in the domed, four-story atrium lobby, while kids can make a splash in the Beach Pool, complete with a waterfall gushing from a stone mountain.

Food lovers won’t need a passport to embark on an epic global culinary journey during the 19th Epcot International Food & Wine Festival. Diners can sample cuisine from six continents during this 53-day culinary extravaganza, which runs through November 12. Celebrity chefs like Warren Brown and “Cake Boss” Buddy Valastro will also stir up plenty of food fun at culinary demonstrations. In the evening, families can gather at the Magic Kingdom as the skies above Cinderella Castle explode in a dazzling display of fireworks during the Wishes Nighttime Spectacular. The entire park thunders accompanied by an unforgettable medley of Disney songs and the voices of Disney characters like Jiminy Cricket, and Tinker Bell, who takes flight over the park. Between world-class attractions and cutting edge shows, character breakfasts, and relaxing in resorts, there’s more than enough magic for everyone. FOR MORE INFORMATION

Put your trust in AAA Approved Auto Repair Know a quality repair facility when you see one

O

ctober is Fall Car Care Month and now is the time to get your vehicle in shape before the onslaught of winter weather. Regular maintenance helps prolong your car’s safety, reliability and value. It also saves you money because it improves fuel economy and extends the life of your vehicle. People are keeping their cars longer so it’s important for drivers to develop a trusted relationship with a professional auto repair shop. AAA has identified a network of Approved Auto Repair (AAR) facilities that include new car dealerships and independent garages. These

shops all meet AAA’s strict quality standards and display the AAA logo. When you see the AAA Approved Auto Repair sign, you’ll find highly trained technicians, a wide range of professional repair services and guaranteed workmanship. And while hundreds of repair facilities apply for the AAR rating each year, fewer than half are able to meet AAA’s rigid criteria. AAA ensures the repair facility has the right tools and equipment to provide a wide range of repairs. They must also adopt staff training qualifications and insurance guidelines. Finally, AAA surveys customers about

their satisfaction with the facility. Once approved, AAR shops are visited quarterly, re-inspected annually and monitored for customer satisfaction to ensure ongoing compliance with AAA standards. All repairs, parts, labor, and components are guaranteed for 12 months or 12,000 miles under normal operating conditions. In addition, AAR shops have agreed to allow AAA to investigate repair service transactions that have been disputed by members and to abide by AAA’s resolution. AAA suggests motorists use this simple checklist to determine your fall and winter maintenance needs. You can inspect many of these items yourself. Others should only be performed by a qualified technician. Tires — Tire pressure typically drops by one PSI for every 10 degree drop in air temperature. Check the pressure on all tires, including the spare and inflate to the recommended levels. Excessive tread wear can indicate problems with wheel alignment, balance or suspension. Replace any tire that has less than 3/32-inches of tread. Brakes — Every time you brake, a thin layer of the pad is removed. Regular brake inspections help prevent expensive damage and avert potential safety issues. Fluid Levels — All vehicle fluids and

lubricants should be checked, replenished and changed at factory-recommended intervals to make sure they’re fresh and filled to the correct level. Belts and Hoses — Inspect hoses for leaks, cracks or loose clamps. Replacing worn belts and hoses can prevent a roadside breakdown. Battery — Make sure the battery terminals and cable ends are free from corrosion and the connections are tight. Have your battery and charging system tested by a trained technician to make sure you have the cranking power for cold weather starts. Wiper Blades — Worn wiper blades can affect your vision. Replace any blade that leaves streaks or misses spots. Lights — Check the operation of all headlights, taillights, brake lights, turn signals, emergency flashers and back-up lights. Replace any burnt out bulbs. Cooling System — Check the coolant level in the overflow tank when the engine is cold. If the level is low, add a 50/50 solution of coolant and water. Coolant should be tested annually for antifreeze protection.

Road trips remain a memorable family experience Most still prefer to do the same things they did as kids

W

ho can forget the Griswold’s famous crosscountry station wagon trip in “National Lampoon’s Vacation”? While technology like smartphones, tablets and mobile devices have dramatically reshaped the way we travel — interestingly enough — many of things we like to do on the road have stayed the same. According to a new consumer survey conducted for the Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers, Americans prefer to pass the time on long road trips by looking out the window and taking in the scenery, much like they did in their childhood. In fact, 41 percent of respondents said that’s how they spent the road trips of their youth. Today, almost the same number report watching the scenery as their favorite way to pass the time on car trips. The Alliance is a trade association of 12 car and light truck manufacturers including BMW Group, Chrysler Group, Ford Motor Company, General Motors, and Mercedes-Benz USA. Playing games and singing songs was the preferred method for whiling away the hours in the past for one-third of passengers. Today, that figure has dropped to 21 percent, as singing “99 Bottles of Beer” has given way to invehicle entertainment systems and portable electronic devices (15 percent). And what was the best part about that trip in the family Truckster? As it

ority for people traveling by car, with 70 percent of survey respondents stating it was important to be able to carry recreational gear like bikes, skis and golf clubs when headed out on road trip. Men can’t accuse women of over packing! Both men and women equally cite the ability to carry extra luggage as an important factor when deciding to fly or drive — 58 percent and 59 percent respectively. With autumn rapidly approaching, Americans continue to look forward to utilizing their vehicles for recreational activities. During the fall months, 43 percent of respondents said their favorite car activity was “tailgating” at events, while 12 percent picked fall foliage. Perhaps the most surprising finding was that 20 percent of women said fighting with siblings was their favorite memory of family road trips. TAKE A AAA DRIVE TRIP

GOING MOBILE — Mobile devices may be a modern necessity but travelers still prefer enjoying the scenery. turns out, it may be just like what Clark Griswold said decades ago: “Half the fun is getting there!” When asked to look back on family road trips, 40 percent of respondents said spending time with loved ones was their favorite part of the trip, while 35 percent cited stopping at roadside attractions. Turning to the decision on choosing

their mode of transportation, 47 percent of respondents cited cost as their main factor — only 3 percent cited distance. In fact, one half of Americans said they’d be willing to travel up to 1,000 miles on vacation by car. Almost 20 percent of those in their 30s said they would “drive any distance.” Packing for fun seems to be a big pri-

Help keep trick-or-treaters safe with these tips

T

rick-or-treaters often forget about safety, so adults need to be even more alert. Safe Kids Worldwide reports that on average, children are more than twice as likely to be struck by a vehicle and killed on Halloween than on any other night of the year. This Halloween, AAA offers these safety tips: Trick-or-treat together — AAA recommends that parents accompany young trick-or-treaters at least until age 12. Choose costumes wisely — Make sure your child is visible by selecting a lightcolored costume, or by adding reflective tape. Choose disguises that don’t obstruct vision and opt for non-toxic face paint instead of masks. Adjust the length of costumes to avoid tripping. Make a plan — Review trick-or-treating precautions, including pedestrian and traffic safety rules. Plan and discuss the route and teach children to stop only at well-lit houses and to never enter a stranger’s home or garage. Stay on the sidewalk — Always walk on sidewalks, if available. If there are no sidewalks, walk as far to the left of the road as possible, facing traffic. Shine a light — Give everyone a glow stick or flashlight to help them see and be seen by drivers.

Cross with caution — Cross streets only at the corner, and never between parked cars or mid-block. Be sure that approaching cars come to a complete stop before stepping into the roadway. Put down the phones — Parents and children should look up and pay attention to their surroundings while walking. Texting and social media can wait. If you need to use your cell phone, walk to a safe area away from the street before doing so. Avoid neighborhood shortcuts — Drivers should avoid cutting through residential streets where trick-or-treaters are likely to be present. Slow down — Drive at least 5 mph below the posted speed limit to give yourself extra time to react to children who may dart into the street. Watch for children — Watch for trickor-treaters walking on roadways, medians and curbs. They may not be paying attention to traffic and cross the street mid-block or between cars. Take extra caution when entering or exiting driveways or alleys. Remove distractions — Avoid any distractions that may you’re your attention away from driving, such as cell phones or in-car entertainment systems.

pire, Vlad Tepes, the real-life inspiration for Bram Stoker’s Dracula, debuts in a terrifying new maze, “Dracula Untold: Reign of Blood.” “The Walking Dead: The End of the Line” places guests in the middle of a harrowing journey from the West Georgia Correctional Facility — now overrun by decomposing walkers — to seek sanctuary at Terminus, where gruesome secrets are concealed. Guests will “die laughing” at Giggles and Gore, Inc., where they discover that evil clowns are not born...they are made — out of other body parts! Witness the primal battle between extraterrestrial species in Alien vs. Predator, or watch the cannibalistic colonists of Roanoke attack any fresh meat that stumbles near them. Dollhouse of the Damned will terrify guests with its macabre characters and visually unsettling environments. Within its decaying walls the devious denizens of the house pull apart and remake the unfortunate souls that wander through the doorway. This year’s event features an allnew street experience with ten different character creations inspired by the acclaimed Syfy series “Face Off.” The hair-raising, characters will inhabit five unique and immersive environments within the scare zone, from creepy scarecrows that protect a spine-chilling farm, to crazed ghouls who haunt dilapidated castle ruins.

Your home at sea is grand, remark-

Accommodations are handsomely appointed with soothing colors, soft textures, stylish furnishings, plush towels, custom-milled French & Italian toiletries and extended queen mattresses featuring luxurious linens. Step out of your oasis and into the Canyon Ranch SpaClub,® where therapeutic treatments leave you wondering how anything could feel quite so perfect. Supplement physical pleasures with enlightening activities, including cooking and painting classes on some ships. And with lectures, a library & inter-
