Dr. Ali Mazrui, longtime professor in the Department of Political Science at the State University of New York at Binghamton, the institution at which I earned my Master’s degree in Public Policy, died on Monday in upstate New York at the age of 81. A giant of an intellectual, Dr. Mazrui was also Director of the Institute for Global Cultural Studies at what is now Binghamton University. Dr. Mazrui was wholly responsible for introducing me to the field of African Politics and piquing my academic interest in the diaspora, broadly defined. We here at the Department of African American and African Studies Community Extension Center mourn the passing of this scholar, humanitarian, and one of the most important Pan-Africanists of this era.
