The ultimate political trailblazer Republican Edward Brooke III (1919-2015) was elected to the United States Senate from the Commonwealth of Massachusetts in 1966, making him the first African American ever elected to Congress' upper chamber. Prior to that Brooke served as Massachusetts' Attorney General, giving him the distinction of being the first African American ever elected to the post of Attorney General. His campaign strategy served as the template for future Black statewide candidates. We here at the African American and African Studies Community Extension Center celebrate the life and accomplishments of this political giant.
