Outstanding Asian American Faculty/Staff Award
This award recognizes faculty, academic professionals, and civil service staff who have shown years of commitment to the Asian American campus community by providing mentoring, advising, programming, teaching, and research opportunities that develop students’ self-awareness and promote understanding of Asian American issues. Award consideration favor nominees exemplifing at least five years of service to our campus and have collaborated with AACC programs.
Yoon Pak
Dr. Yoon Pak is an Associate Professor in the Department of Education Policy Organization and Leadership and Core Faculty in the Asian American Studies Department. Teaching her course on Asian American Education, Dr. Pak is dedicated to expanding her focus to contemporary issues of Asians and Asian Americans in higher education. In 2014, she coauthored Asian Americans in Higher Education: Charting New Realities. Dr. Pak has also served as a mentor to all underrepresented students in the College of Education.

Rakhi Sen
Dr. Rakhi Sen is a staff psychologist at the Counseling Center. She has served as the International Student Outreach coordinator, administering the InterLink mentor program and InterConnect workshop series to help international students adjust to the university community. She has presented at multiple conferences about Asian and Asian American issues, and is a key collaborator with the staff professional staff across campus to help better serve international students.

This award recognizes exceptional undergraduate Oustanding student leaders who have served the Asian American campus community as advocates for promoting American issues and Asian American understanding ofinAsian leadership of activities that unity among Asian Undergraduate Student promote American students. Award consideration favors those nominees who have exemplified several semesters of leadership to our Leader Award campus and will soon be graduating. Christine has been an advocate for the Asian and Asian American student body. By serving on the PSA and MAFA boards, she upheld mission statements that foster relationships with the community, promote cultural awareness, and create better leaders. In PSA she undertook cultural educating and promoting Filipino culture through dance. As an outreach chair for MAFA, she strived to bring Filipino organizations together for a conference that uplifted the community through education and communication of the issues. Caroline served as an advocate for promoting an understanding of the Korean campus community. She first worked with Korean Student Association (KSA) five years ago when sports and event teams were formed, and she quickly established herself as a lead on sports events by helping Korean students to build ties and promote their health. Caroline has served on the KSA executive board throughout 2012 to 2014, and she is also involved in Student Consultants on Teaching, Society of Women in Engineering, and Women in Math, Science, and Engineering.

Active in the Asian American community throughout college, Michelle was a programming intern for the AACC, and Multicultural Chair for the American Advertising Federation. She took on leadership positions including PSA’s Filipino Culture Night Choreographer and Battle of the Bamboo Battalion. She was accepted into the Most Promising Minority Student Program in New York and participated in events that lacked Asian presence such as mentoring youth at the Don Moyer Boys and Girls Club and competing in the Miss Black and Gold pageant.

Diane is one of the founding members who chartered the third multicultural Asian-interest sorority here at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Sigma Psi Zeta. She has taken on multiple positions, including chair positions and the Executive Board of Directors. Diane strives to utilize every available “pulpit” in her efforts to raise awareness toward the national philanthropy. She is determined to lead and the steer the sorority to its fullest potential and great heights.

Doyoun has been involved with Korean Student Association for the past two years as the vice-director of the Career Development division and Internal Vice President. Doyoun helped serve undergraduate students by hosting events like the KSA Career School Illinois workshop series and “Invitation from Korea” in partnership with the Korean Cultural Center. Doyoun’s career and cultural support of international students and his commitment to enhancing the quality of Korean students’ campus life allows KSA to provide a variety of events and services assisting diverse communities.

Somy has served as a Student Cultural Programming Fee representative and Co-Director of the Asian Pacific American Coalition. With her leadership, APAC has executed various programs such as I Am Asian Week, Seen & Heard workshops, and APAC’s 20th Year Anniversary. Somy has also represented University of Illinois as a Programming Chair for Midwest Asian American Student Union (MAASU) while volunteering at Carle Hospital.

Vivian helped start the Asian interest sorority Sigma Psi Zeta. Taking many leadership roles since joining in 2012, she was Vice President External while actively involved in APAC. She planned joint events promoting unity among different organizations, such as the Asian American Student Housing Organization, Asian American Association, and more. Vivian planned internal events for sisters to strengthen their bonds, and also share their thoughts about issues that Asian American women face, such as the gender wage gap and human trafficking.
Monisha Shah has been an active member of Delta Kappa Delta Sorority, where she is currently Parliamentarian and Alumni Chair. Monisha is also actively involved with the AACC. She is currently an outreach intern, and will be a programming intern next semester. . She encouraged Delta Kappa Delta to join APAC, and has been one of the constant representatives for the organization within the coalition. Additionally, Monisha is an I-Connect Facilitator with OIIR.

Cynthia’s main involvement was with VSA. She participated in the VSA Family Day Show, and through joint events with AAA and other Asian organizations. Cynthia was also a part of starting Sigma Psi Zeta, as well as Women in Action for Volunteering, Education, and Service (WAVES). Cynthia has held Executive Board positions for 2 consecutive years as Vice President, and Secretary. Cynthia is also involved in the Asian American Community as a co-leader for Covenant Fellowship Church, and she mentors a group of 24 Asian undergraduates. Alex served as an SCPF board member, Co-Director of Asian Pacific American Coalition, and Vice President External for Taiwanese American Students Club. He has also been the UIUC representative in the InterCollegiate Taiwanese American Students Association. As APAC Co-Director, Alex utilized a coalition meeting to address a response to the Chancellor Wise “Snow Hate” incident. He also helped organized TASC’s Night Market at Quad in collaboration with TCCA, bringing an important aspect of Taiwanese culture to the campus community.

Outstanding Asian American Graduate Student Leader Award
This award recognizes graduate and professional students for excellence in developing and implementing programs for the Asian American campus community, excellence and innovation in classroom instruction furthering knowledge of Asian American communities, and/or excellence in research promoting awareness of Asian American issues. Award consideration favors nominees exemplifing several semesters of leadership and will soon be graduating.
Gaeun actively contributed to the KSA Graduate Student Team as the Vice Director in 2012. In 2013 she held the External Vice President position and she balanced her time in KSA with her work as a GA, TA, and RA with various units on campus and her coursework as a PhD student in Education Policy Organization & Leadership. She has lead many KSA events such as “The Talent Show”, “Inclusive Commitment”, and the “East Asian Festival Celebration.”
Gaeun Seo Aston currently serves as president of the Chinese Students and Scholars Association. Aston helped organize the 2013 Moon Gala with other RSO’s, attracting many students on campus. He also helped coordinate the 2013 CSSA Basketball Tournament while implementing monthly volunteer opportunities. In 2014, Aston supported new initiatives like the Lantern Festival. Throughout his time at the university he has founded many different clubs and events to enrich Chinese students’ lives, like the CSSA News Club, and Film Club.

Pei has served as an officer board member in the CSSA for four consecutive years. Currently, Pei serves as the Events VP for the organization and has created new initiatives to make CSSA a more diversified organization. She started the Legal Support Service, English Corner, NewsAgency, helped launch a Volunteers’ Program, and Dance Club. Pei has been incorporating other university’s events and attending many RSO Leadership Dinners and Chai Times to exchange ideas with other student leaders, as well as strengthening the communication with other student organizations as well as CSSA itself.

Barkstall Elementary School
The Community Builder Award recognizes significant and sustained commitment to building a stronger campus-community in partnership with the AACC. We honor Barkstall Elementary School of Champaign Unit 4 School District for its unwavering support and collaboration in helping the AACC teach 500+ children each year about Asian cultural traditions. Over each of the past six years, UI students and staff have worked with Barkstall faculty in celebration of the Lunar New Year, including learning about traditions as celebrated in Asia and around the world.

This award was established in 2005 to recognize alumni who have distinguished themselves through (1) outstanding contributions to the Asian American community, and (2) exceptional success in their professional careers, and (3) meritorious service supporting the mission of the University.
Jasjit Singh
Executive Director of Sikh American Legal Defense and Education Fund Jasjit Singh has become a leading voice for social justice in the Asian American community, especially in his current position as the Executive Director of the Sikh American Legal Defense and Education Fund (SALDEF), a civil rights and educational organization. He has been a passionate voice for the Sikh Americans and the challenges that they face since his days at the U of I as a founding member of the Sikh Student Association. He graduated from the UI in 2004 with a BA in business administration. In August 2013, he spoke at the 50th anniversary of the historic civil rights march on Washington.

Tracy is a junior majoring in chemistry and is from Antioch, Illinois. She has been very active in the Philippine Student Association as external vice president, represents PSA at APAC coalition meetings, and has been a leader in PSA’s FACT conference. This year she is a programming/office support intern at the Asian American Cultural Center, and will return next year as an AACC intern.
Asian American Studies Awards In order to encourage undergraduate student research in Asian American Studies, the UIUC Asian American Studies Department is sponsoring an award for the best undergraduate student research paper in Asian American Studies.

Jeffrey S. Tanaka The Asian American Studies Department at Research Grant Christine the is pleased to award graduate presented to Peralta student research
grants designed to assist with their research in areas directly relating to Asian American studies. This research grant is named for Jeffrey S. Tanaka, a professor in UIUC’s departments of Psychology and Educational Psychology until his untimely death in 1992. He was well known by his students for his generosity in mentoring graduate students.

Susan Yung Maul Award for Outstanding Asian American Program
This award recognizes programs/events that have shown a significant impact in serving the Asian American community, developing awareness of Asian American issues, and/or promoting unity in the Asian American campus community. The award recipient must be sponsored primarily by a student organization. This award was renamed in 2003 to honor Susan Yung Maul, upon her retirement as Director of the Illini Union, to recognize her 31 years of contributions to the Asian American community and the university. School KSA Career School Illinois Career Illinois is a
program that helps Korean students develop themselves as strong candidates for jobs in the Korean market. Many experienced speakers educated students with career information on how to gain employment successfully through interviews, aptitude tests, strategies, study groups, and presentations. This program has had a noticeable impact since its construction over the last three years.
Taiwan Has Heart: Night Market
Taiwan Has Heart: Night Market was an event held by TASC and TCCA that captured the passion of the students as well as the importance of Taiwanese culture on campus. This event helped educate not only the public but the planners of the event through its research and education on the importance of cultural elements in Taiwan. They served a multitude of Taiwanese dishes, played various games, and hosted a bartering area for the public to experience the night markets in Taiwan.

to uphold the principle of equality between all people of the world, regardless of religion, sexuality, caste, etc. through sharing a meal together. Langar also helped to promote awareness of Sikhism on campus and build solidarity amongst Sikh students and community members.

28 years in the making, Fashion Show has been one of Asian American Association’s biggest and highly anticipated events every year. This year, there were 100 student models participating in 5 different scenes: formal, business casual, nightlife, urban and cultural. The theme for this year’s Fashion Show is “Growing Young”; an exploration of what it means to grow up Asian and American, with a closer look at the struggles of straddling two sets of cultures. Other groups on campus join us on stage every year, including Illini Wushu, TASC Special Ops, and the Illini Glowsticking Club. Fashion Show truly is a grand production and an experience unique for its models, members, and audience alike.
AAA Fashion Show
Filipino Americans Coming Together, or FACT, is a collegiate conference that brings together AsianAmericans from all over the nation through the efforts of the undergraduate students, alumni, and the FACT committee from the Philippine Student Association (PSA). The theme for the conference this year was “This Way Up”; it called for a movement toward intersectionality amongst Filipino/a Americans, Asian Americans, and the delegates’ university campuses. Over 1,000 delegates from 20 different universities come to the U of I for one weekend because FACT gives them a chance to explore their identities through workshops, ceremonies, and the FACT Variety Show. During FACT 2013, coordinators Grace Geremias and Jeselle Obina also focused on philanthropy through the charity Advancement for Rural Kids, also known as ARK.

Taste of Asia is a free event that is open to the
Taste of Asia UIUC and Urbana-Champaign community.
AAA invites many APAC organizations on campus to participate in this event. In addition, there are a several exciting performances such as Chinese Ribbon dance, Taekwondo demonstrations, TASC Special Ops, PSA Barkada, and much more. Over 400 people attend this event annually. Taste of Asia aims to showcase the diversity of Asian ethnicities and educate the student body about the many cultures of Asian Americans. AAApalooza is a showcase of Asian American
AAApalooza talents. The purpose of this event is to increase
visibility of Asian American artists, demystify stereotypes, and unite students together in an enjoyable and relaxing atmosphere, providing a valuable experience as an alternative to other Friday night environments. Performances were put on by both prominent and underground artists who have well-respected roles in their communities. Their talents captivated the attention of over 300 attendees. AAApalooza is a night that truly brings the Asian American and campus community together in a supportive and enlightening environment. Night ISA India Night India is the Indian
Student Association’s annual show that celebrates the eventful school year and the accomplishments of the South Asian talent that is present on campus. Over 180 students perform at this event, and each year, ISA finds ways to expand upon its own horizons and offers something unique and exciting about the Indian culture for the UIUC community.

Holi is an Indian festival, of colors and love, celebrating the arrival of spring. . The celebration of the festival using colors, especially after a white and gloomy winter, is symbolic of the energy infused by the spring after winter. Holi is one of the most celebrated and most fun–filled festivals in India. There are very few Holi celebrations that happen in the U.S. Asha for Education introduced this event at UIUC. It is supported by various RSOs (DKD, ISA, IGSA, AIO etc.) as well as local communities (CU–MTD, One– Illinois, TCF Bank etc.), and covered by Daily Illini as well.
Holi
Mania 2014 is an intercollegiate dance Raas Mania Raas competition at the University of Illinois at UrbanaChampaign. The mission was to promote and spread the beauty of India’s culture through the use of a traditional folk dance called Raas. The competition this year brought together 8 elite teams from across the nation to compete for monetary prizes as well an opportunity to win points to qualify for the National Raas Competition. Raas teams from the University of California – Riverside, Duke University, University of Michigan, University of Texas, Texas A&M, New York University, University of Chicago, and UIC competed this year.
Illinois Fast-a-Thon is a collaborative effort between the Indian Student Association, Muslim Student Association, Jain Student Association, Dharma, Sigma Beta Rho, Alpha Iota Omicron, Illini Thakkat Foundation, Vietnamese Student Association, Avicenna Community Health Center – SI, Quench Foundation, and the Council on American-Islamic Relations. Participants raise money for charity as they observe a fast in honor of Gandhi and the salt strikes and hunger strikes he led during the fight for independence against the British. This year, all of the organizations were able to raise $2,950 for the Zakat Foundation and Wesley Food Pantry!

Korean Students Association Korean Student
Association (KSA) has created numerous programs and services for Asians and Asian-Americans on campus and in local community. KSA worked to promote Korean culture, strived to provide academic and career programs to Korean and Korean-American students, and also provide social services to the community. Throughout the year, KSA provides many programs to guide Korean and Korean-American students. First was the “Grand Orientation” for Korean freshmen, providing them useful information and also showcasing other Korean RSOs on campus. The “Mentoring Program” provided upper-class mentors to lower-class students with same majors. As a service to the Korean and Korean-American students and local community, KSA holds annual soccer, basketball and baseball tournaments. KSA also hosts networking events and seminars for Korean graduate students. KSA has also hosted over 50 info sessions for Korean companies visiting campus. As an Asian-interest sorority, alpha Kappa Delta Phi strives to promote awareness of Asian American issues on campus. New members coordinated and planned a workshop where they discussed the problem of deportation occurring in Asian countries such as Cambodia. In early February, aKDPhi cosponsored the #OneCampus event so they could address the issue of racism, specifically against Asians and Asian Americans that still exists on this campus. They also continue to be active members of the Asian Pacific American Coalition and participate in events such as I Am Asian Week and the semiweekly coalition meetings.

Yuki Llewellyn Award for Outstanding Asian American Student Organization
This award recognizes student organizations that have developed and implemented activities, programs, and services that promote greater cultural, social, or political awareness of Asian American issues. The award recipient must be a registered organization affiliated with the AACC. This award was renamed in 2002 to honor Yuki Llewellyn, upon her retirement as Director of Registered Organizations and Assistant Dean of Students, to recognize her 37 years of contributions to the Asian American community and the university.
Established in the 1980s, CSSA at UIUC has been the most influential organization for Chinese students and scholars in the Urbana-Champaign area, with the mission to help Chinese students and scholars study, work, and live better in America. CSSA spreads the Chinese culture and introduces Chinese students to the diverse American cultures with the cooperative effort of 143 hardworking, intelligent, and innovative officers. Each year CSSA organizes a variety of events to fulfill its missions. These events, including the Moon Gala and the Lantern Festival, celebrate the traditional Chinese culture; “the Voice of Champaign” and “If You Are the One,” mirror the modern Chinese popular culture. CSSA also holds events that aim to enrich students’ experience in America, including New Student Orientation, Basketball Tournament, Winder Ski Trip, and Graduate Student Formal Dance. In addition, CSSA also establishes subgroups such as Crosstalk, Karaoke, Dance, Volleyball, Baseball, Micro Film Club and Chinese Orchestra that help serve the community.

The Sikh Student
Sikh Student Association Association (SSA)
is a fairly young organization on campus that never really had a secure following. Consequently, Sikh solidarity and awareness of Sikhism on campus was minimal. However, within the last two years, SSA has completely revamped its organization and structure. The SSA Langar on Campus event changed everything. After a whole year of planning, meeting University staff /faculty for event approval, fundraising and speaking in the Chicago and Danville communities, applying for funding from SORF, and constantly networking with other student organizations, over 1,500 people attended Langar, and it made the front cover of the Daily Illini. SSA also held the Lohri Celebration (Northern Indian agricultural New Year), which had over 120 attendees. SSA co-hosted the 2014 Interfaith Conference with Interfaith in Action where Balpreet Kaur, Huffington Post’s 2012 Person of the Year was a keynote speaker.

Delta Kappa Delta is a multicultural service sorority with fundamentally South Asian roots. While the sisterhood is open to all ladies, its roots are based in the Indian sub-continent, including the countries of India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Nepal and Sri Lanka. The purpose of the sorority is to not only better the community through humanitarian services, but also to educate the campus about the Indian subcontinent. Last year, DKD were able to raise $1,100 for its philanthropy efforts. Some of these fundraisers were also culturally based, and helped to educate others about South Asian culture. Delta Kappa Delta works very closely with Asha for Education by cosponsoring many of their events and philanthropy. DKD also took the initiative to join APAC this year in an effort to become more involved in the Asian and Asian American community as a whole.

Asha UIUC is the local chapter of Asha for Education whose mission is to provide basic education to the underprivileged children in India. Asha UIUC invested considerable effort in developing and implementing several activities, programs, and services for the promotion of cultural and social awareness of Asian American issues. The UIUC Chapter of “Asha for Education” is one of the premier chapters in the U.S., which supports around 1,500 children in four different projects in India. Asha UIUC won a Yahoo grant of $35,000 in 2009, Intel volunteer grant of $3,300 in 2009 and Champaign-Urbana International Humanitarian Award in 2008, among other recognitions.

Asian American Association is dedicated to serving and promoting the needs of Asian Americans at UIUC and the local community through educational programs, social activities, collaborative events, and extensive networking opportunities. One of AAA’s most successful and popular programs is the Big Sib-Lil Sib program which fosters a mentorship between upperclassmen and underclassmen. This year alone, there are over 150 new active members. As an avid supporter of MAASU, AAA extends its outreach on a regional level. AAA UIUC has established relationships other Asian American student organizations at Purdue, Indiana State, University of Michigan, University of Missouri, and Denison.
