“Architecture is a vase. My reward for eight years of labor [on La Tourette] is to have seen the highest things grow and develop within that vase . . . [The monastery] does not speak of itself. It lives on its interior. It is in the interior that the essential occurs.”— Le Corbusier This project is to organize the program of a monastery into a vertical tower (66x66x400 ft3). The tower is closed, and has only several holes for light. The space is for shadow, silence and song. As same as an ordinary flat monastery with cloister, this one is for sisters to spend their entire lives. Program: Oratory, choir, visiting room, school, monastic cells, refectory, sister's chapel, chapter house, scriptorium, cloister garden.

02 REUSE SUBURBIA
Tropical housing & community renovation Flexibility for housing studio project spring 2020
Print-making about tropical environment
Suburbia context
Existing plan
This is a housing project based in the suburbia of San Juan, Puerto Rico. The print is a reflection of the natural catastrophes (hurricane & earthquake) and the lovely environment. Because of the climate and catastrophes of the tropical island, the project must use a passive strategy to adjust micro-climate. Neighborhoods of this area have a certain fabric. A block consists of two rows of houses. This project originated from an existing plan. By renovating the existing prototype, it creates a flexible community. Flexibility makes the community multifunctional, as public resources is weak here. Fexibility also allow the building to adapt the entire life span of a family. The community is available for new public facilities (school, factory...), new ownership (house, apartment...), and a sustainable lifestyle.

03 GHOST SANCTUARY
River Bridge in Mountains Atmosphere from site (GENIUS LOCI) studio project fall 2019
Memory drawings in watercolor
Translucent draft drawings & projector installations
This project is a hermit residence above an old simple stone bridge in mountains. It originated in representational experiments seeking to capture traces of the place of ancient mountain life. Its representations, from translucent draft drawings to watercolors to projector installations, refine the atmosphere and generate the final design. Basing on Italian philosopher Giorgio Agamben's Homo Sacer and the exhibit of Chinese dissident artist Ai Weiwei's work, this project tries to recreate ancient mounitain life, for modern people to escape the world. But the appearance of the building has a strong modernist inflection. It is asking:"What would a space in service of an ancient hermit life be like - materialy, spatially, over the cycle of the day and year".

Atmosphere has layers. In an ancient Chinese house, between yard (nature) and bedroom (human), there are many layers to make a transition. Parts of them were called "grey space". But all of them can be treated as multiple space "layers". In Ziyang city, between public architecture axis and green belt, there will be a museum of the city. "Layers" make sense in such situation, making a transition between public architecture and green belt, playing and learning, nature and human.

Layers in the museum Different layers of space make a transition between museum and park. In the meanwhile, it provides more forms of space. The atmosphere of space changes from solemn(center part) to relaxed(side parts).

Farmers were forced to live in the Memory Prototype Citizen city. What on theirFarmer farmland now are groups of highrise building. What they dream now are those rural Farmer lives of their childhood. Farmer This project originated from montages of their memories. It created montage from memories as well as architectural elements & scenes. It finally reflects the utopia of those ex-farmers who lost their farmland and villages. In the meanwhile, it is not a rural house, but a collective residence that can adapt to the urban context.

OFFICE
From home, via street, walk to the office. It is street connects living space and working space. Street not only includes the traffic space but also the shops and public spaces around it. It enriches the daily lives of citizens. However, city rennovation demolished all the old street around this project. In this project, a new street snakes up in the middle of a hotel tower and an office tower. It opens to residents in the hotel, employees in the office, and citizens on the ground. As it ascends, it expands and contracts to create atrium-like spaces. These include areas of tiered seating, meeting rooms, open gathering spaces, gyms, cafe, and outdoor terraces.
