A (Very) Brief History of EM • • • •

First EM residencies in the early ‘70s Recognition of EM as specialty in ‘79 ABEM first board exam in ‘80 Certification requiring residency training • Unique set of skills obtained in residency • Lawsuits in the ‘90s • Unfair business practices and exploitation of EPs in the 90s leads to the formation of AAEM • The rise of Contract Management Groups


AAEM • Founded in 1993 • Around 8,000 members • ~4,000 resident & students in RSA • Journal: JEM


AAEM/RSA • AAEM Resident Section formed 1999 • AAEM/RSA formed in 2005


Vision Statement • AAEM/RSA is an accessible, collaborative organization that fosters innovation, education, and advocacy for residents and students in emergency medicine.


Mission Statement • We provide resources and opportunities that educate, inspire, and inform emergency medicine trainees. • AAEM/RSA also supports and educates residents on the core tenets of AAEM, including the necessity of fair practice environments and the importance of unencumbered patient access to quality emergency care provided by a board certified emergency medicine physician.
