OC T 2 SPEAKER
As SVP Digital Group Creative Director, Alessandra works primarily on MasterCard, General Mills, Kohls, Weight Watchers and Verizon. Before McCann, Ale worked at Agency Republic in London, four-time Agency of the Year, and before that Framfab/ LBi. Her clients included O2, Baileys, Mercedes-Benz, BBC, Kodak, Orange, Epson, London Underground and several charities. Her work has won various awards and she has also been a judge for D&AD, the OneShow, ADDYs® and BIMA. All of this led her to realize that while technology makes the advertising world smaller, we still have to understand the differences that make market segments unique. So, whether you are planning to work abroad or just curious about market differences, Ale will give you a broad view of where the ad industry has been and is heading.

We Want YOU… and your talent
SCHOOL’S IN! President’s Message: Marielle Land-Howard
When I graduated from LSU and decided to wait on law school, I said my brain needed a break from all the instruction of the previous five years. I haven’t made it back to law school yet, but I promise my brain hasn’t rested at all since that time. Harry Truman is credited with saying “It’s what you learn after you know it all that counts,” and that about sums up our media and marketing arena these days.
ADDY® planning is in full swing and we want YOU to get involved! No matter what your talent may be, we have a sub-committee that will showcase it… Photography, Interactive, Production/ Show, Catering, Winner’s Book, Sponsorships, Call for Entries, Student Participation, Judging, Art Design/Direction, Pinnacle Awards, District Forwarding and Communications.
If you thought knowing how to create beautiful print images was going to be enough, knowing how to design functional attractive websites would fuel your business’ growth in the next 5 – 10 years, you were wrong. Don’t feel bad, I thought my knowledge of how print and online advertising works for my clients was enough too.
Please email ADDY® Co-Chairs, Jason Feirman at jfeirma@lsu.edu or Theresa Overby at theresa@visitbatonrouge.com, to indicate your area of enlistment.
If change is constant, then we are officially constantly fast forwarded. The pace at which everything we think we know about media, advertising and marketing is changing leaves most of us dizzy.
Professional Donations, Personal Donations, Blood Donations?
So what do you do? How do you not become Twitter-pated while reflecting on your Facebook? Harvard Business Publishing recommends turning your mentoring structure upside down. “Time Warner launched a reverse mentoring program where college students help their Baby Boomer executives understand new technologies that can help the company. If you don't know how to Tweet or post a video to YouTube, look to your younger colleagues.” I mention all of this because I’ve been getting some reverse mentoring myself lately. While your new AAF-Baton Rouge board couldn’t survive without the experienced leaders that continue to serve our organization, the new younger leaders are quickly proving they’ve got more than a few tricks up their sleeves too. AAF-Baton Rouge has always prided itself on our interaction with and mentoring of area advertising students and young professionals. Now is the time for our club to learn just as much from these upstarts as we teach. Their understanding of our industry, and the speed at which it’s changing, may be our window to the newest advertising frontier.
BOOK OF THE MONTH How to be THAT Guy | Scott Ginsberg What are YOU known for? In Scott’s eagerly anticipated third book, he reveals 47 secrets to help entrepreneurs MAXIMIZE their visibility, credibility, uniqueness, authenticity and memorability in the eyes of their customers and prospects. Scott Ginsberg was a keynote speaker at the AAF District 7 Leadership Convention in August.
The Annual MEDIA MADNESS Media Auction is hiding around the corner but it’s not too late to scare up some donations for this worthy cause! To donate media, air time or space, contact Bridget Riley at bridgetriley@gerrylane. com. All other donations and requests to attend should go to Miranda Lemon at mlemon@ amedisys.com.
AAF-BR ONLINE Revamping the AAF-BR brand standard presented a great opportunity to give the current website a complete overhaul. The new website will clearly define our membership benefits to both current and prospective members. New features include a complete online membership directory, as well as a job board where both professionals and employers can list their employment needs. We’re very excited about all the new website will add to the organization. Please contact Brian Rodriguez (Brian.Rodriguez@gatorworks.net) to volunteer with content management or with any ideas you may have.
UNEWS We want to feature news about YOU in our weekly E-News. It goes out every Wednesday, so email in your news to adfedkelley@hotmail.com every Monday by noon to be included.
Our students are still starving, but you can help! We want to bring students in advertisingrelated disciplines to the table with our club’s best asset--you, the professional members! A $200 contribution from generous members and member organizations will ensure that 10 students are afforded opportunities for professional development, engagement in club initiatives, and networking with professional members and fellow students at each monthly membership luncheon. Each additional $20 you can pledge will afford one more student this unique opportunity. The club will thank you generously for sharing this important club priority by including mentions of your sponsorship
our October sponsor, for the Feed a Starving (Student) Artist Program. Gatorworks and STUN recognize the importance of advertising education and outreach, and we heartily appreciate their support. On behalf of our students and the professional members with whom they will work, thanks Gatorworks and STUN! on professional and student member correspondence and marketing materials at the meeting. Many thanks to Gatorworks, our September sponsor, and STUN Design and Advertising,
You can be a hero to a student hungry for engagement, networking, and, well, excellent Juban’s lunch. Contact Margo Jolet at adfedmargo@gmail.com or Hunter Territo at hunterterrito@gmail.com today to pledge your support!
Hot For Teacher Gone are the days of propping your head up on your desk and doodling hearts in your composition note pad as you dreamily stare at your sexy Biology teacher… Siiiiigggghhhhhh You’re not a student anymore, but that doesn’t mean that you can’t go back to school: AAF-BR plans to partner with Junior Achievement (JA) and Volunteers in Public Schools this year and we need your help!
WHAT’S UP 7? District 7 News with Elizabeth Perry
Fancy meeting you here. You may have heard the news that your AAF-Baton Rouge board of directors took home first place in the Mouth of the South competition at the recent District 7 Leadership Conference. Well, that’s just one part of an informationpacked leadership training weekend. Your board attended this conference to be educated and inspired to better serve the club’s needs and give better service to the club. And the training doesn’t stop there. In October the District holds Fall Board, a shorter conference that concentrates on President’s Council and a day-long ADDY® workshop. In April 2010 comes the big District 7 Spring Convention in Mobile, AL that will feature District ADDYs®, the District level National Student Advertising Competition (Geaux Tigers!) and the Governor’s Gala where the new District board will be inducted. The final meeting of the 2009-2010 year is the AAF National Conference in June in Orlando, FL. You don’t have to be a board member to attend these meetings, so I encourage you to attend and find out why we all keeping meeting like this.

Martin Flanagan | The Pro Creative Director & Founding Partner Xdesign, Inc. martin@xdesign.tv
How long have you been a member of AAF-BR? I think I joined in 1975, so 34 years. How has your business changed in these years that you have been a member? The advertising industry has changed tremendously in the 36 years I’ve been in it. I’ve watch the industry go from hand made art to hand held digital devices and the future is even more exciting with the advent of social networking. In your opinion, what is the best benefit of AAF-BR membership? Networking has always been the best benefit of membership. Long before Facebook, MySpace and Twitter there was AAF-BR. What do you do for fun? I have been a singer/songwriter all my life. It is fun, inspiring and a nice break from advertising.
Jenny Kornuta | The Intern LSU Mass Communications Senior Rockit Science jenny@rockitscienceagency.com
How long have you been working at Rockit Science? I have been working as an intern at Rockit Science since the end of May 2009. What types of projects do you work on? I essentially get to see every piece that goes into creating a campaign, which is obviously really beneficial for me as an advertising student. Most of the time, I conduct industry and consumer research for our projects. What is the most important lesson or skill you have learned as an intern at Rockit Science? I’m always encouraged to get involved in the process, which has taught me to not be afraid to speak up and try. I don’t just sit and watch - I get to DO. What piece of advice would you give your replacement? I would tell any other student interning at Rockit Science to pay attention and listen, but to keep in mind: participation is key.

Object 9 opened its doors to LSU students in September as part of AAF-BR's College Connection initiatives. Object 9's Creative Director Andy Gutowski gave fifteen students representing five majors at both the graduate and undergraduate level a closer look at the agency's day-to-day operations, current projects, and history of award-winning work. "It was great to see that even though they are a small shop, the talent of their employees allows them to create amazing work. It showed the younger crowd that Baton Rouge can definitely compete with the big dogs," said Katherine Simon, LSU-AAF president. High 5, Object 9!
