APRIL 9 SPEAKER

Learn about marketing to minorities at our April 9 luncheon with Reverend Dr. Al Anderson, Chairman & Founder of Anderson Communications, Inc. Brands are the most valuable assets any company has. If those brands don’t maximize every opportunity for growth, they will never reach their full potential for profitability. Consequently, the most successful companies realize that every ethnic segment is important to their success. They don’t ignore this reality and make a conscious effort to aggressively market their products and services to all of the key consumer segments. Black Americans are unique in their product preferences, lifestyles, media habits and personal aspirations. African Americans are indeed “low hanging fruit” for almost every brand in the marketplace, so it makes good economic sense to make this important ethnic segment a priority, not an afterthought. Al Anderson, a native of Winston-Salem, North Carolina, is a graduate of Morehouse College. He has spent the last 45 years as a pioneer and maverick in the practice of marketing and communications with special emphasis on the African American consumer. He is one of the best-known experts on African American marketing and is known as “The Dean of Black Consumer Marketing.” A noted lecturer and industry counselor, he is Chairman and Founder of Anderson Communications, Inc. (ACI) founded in 1971, (the second oldest African American owned marketing services firm in the country.) Now in its 41st year and recently elected into the Hall of Fame of The Atlanta Business League, ACI is known as one of the best sources for those companies who wish to market their products and services to African-Americans. The company specializes in developing strategically based, integrated ‘Go to Market™’ marketing programs for its clients.

AAF-BR Membership Luncheon: Salute to Students and Ralph Sims Award, Juban’s

AAF-BR is NOT just a bunch of tools! On Saturday, February 27th, a group of our AAFBR members braved the elements and volunteered at a Habitat for Humanity build. The strength of our members was on full display as we swung hammers, slung mud, and successfully constructed walls. AAF-BR also flexed our creative muscles and designed a custom T-shirt for the event. The T-shirts were sold to club members to raise money for our local Baton Rouge Habitat for Humanity chapter. Funds raised from the shirt sale totaled $135 and will be used to purchase lunches for the local Habitat staff. Thanks to everyone who volunteered and/or purchased a T-shirt. We not only helped build a house, but also built a partnership between AAF-BR and Habitat for Humanity!

reward President’s Message Marielle Land-Howard

You made New Year’s Resolutions. The odds are against you keeping them, but you are determined. You made up your mind, and you are still plugging away at them. Maybe you’ve achieved one or two by now. Now what? Duh, it’s Reward time! It’s time for that whole fruits of labors stuff, the good stuff, the bonus round of life. If you got the thing you wanted most, what would you do with it? For my husband, his reward is the Powerball. That’s right, if he got a Door Number 3 in his life, he’d like the Powerball jackpot to be behind it. And if I were a betting woman, I’d bet he’s not alone. “But,” I query, “what about all of the unhappy rich and famous people in the world? What about suicidal rock stars surrounded by everything wonderful and indulgent money can buy? What if the Powerball did that to you?” “Not a chance,” he replies. “I’ve got a plan. I don’t want to be famous, just rich. And, when I’m rich, I’m going to do lots of good things for people I can’t afford to help right now.” A plan? Is that what it takes to be strong enough to get what you want without letting it corrupt you? And, if doing good in the measure which we can currently afford to hasn’t earned us the Powerball prize yet, why should I believe that doing more good when I can afford to will inoculate me from the ills of riches? The point of mine and my husband’s wishful sparring - we want. Want is good – it pushes us to do, give, learn, stretch and try. However, the real reward for hard work is…more hard work. The more responsible I am - as a parent, a wife, a professional, a citizen – the more responsibility I am given. Not exactly a jackpot, right? But it is. The work that is entrusted to us by our companies, our families, our friends, our organizations is a reward. It is the stamp that we have done well and are appreciated for doing so. Personally, I consider all of my work not only an honor to do, but a blessing to endure. If you think I’m crazy, ask one of the 14.8 million people unemployed in America right now how they feel about work. Life is my dream job. Every day, I learn something new, see something I never saw before, love deeper, play harder and live more intensely and purposefully. And as long as this is the reward for my discipline and hard work, I’ll take it.

Students auctioned their time and talent in our annual Silent Student Auction, held concurrently with ADDY 2010. The auction was expanded to the March luncheon and a total of $375 was raised. Thank you to all who bid on our students; we know you’ll love them as much as we do! Wright-Feigley Communications opened their lovely Perkins Rowe office for the first studio tour of the semester in March. Two other tours are in the works to round out the year, including a special tour and social hosted by X Design in advance of the spring conference. And speaking of the spring conference, we are looking forward to hosting students statewide for a day of keynote speakers, panels, breakout sessions, portfolio reviews, and networking April 10 in the Holliday Forum of the LSU Manship School of Mass Communication. Students enjoyed meeting, greeting, and eating at the March luncheon thanks to our March Feed A Starving (Student) Artist sponsor, Digital FX. Thanks for bringing our students and professionals together, and for offering your space for a studio tour this summer! College Connection will be awarding two scholarships again this year in addition to a senior merit award. Please encourage talented students you know to apply by April 8. Visit www.aafbr.org for full details and a downloadable application. We’ve saved the best for last! We wholeheartedly thank our 2010 Flagship Sponsor, Amedisys Home Health Services, who has made a very generous commitment to advertising education initiatives. Their contribution will cover the cost of ALL spring student programs as well as the cost of students’ flights to the Leo Burnett Mosaic Career Fair in Chicago. If you are young at heart and looking to share your experience with the advertising professionals of tomorrow, please contact Margo Jolet (AdFedMargo@gmail.com) or Hunter Territo (HunterTerrito@ gmail.com) to join the College Connection Committee in their spring semester efforts. Thank you to our sponsors for supporting our students!

How long have you been a member of AAF-BR?

I was an AAF student member at LSU and have participated in AAF events for more than 20 years. I’ve been an active member of AAF-BR for about four years. In your opinion, what is the best benefit of AAF-BR membership?

Our Sponsors “Crushed It” for Gary V! Thank you to all sponsors and volunteers who helped to bring Gary Vaynerchuk to Baton Rouge in January. The event was a great success and showcased AAF-BR to our community. This event would not have been possible without your support and enthusiasm! Sponsors:

The networking opportunities are great for business, and who doesn’t enjoy a well-executed social event? But what I appreciate most is that many of my colleagues have become valued friends. What are your thoughts on the current economy and how it will affect the Baton Rouge advertising community?

The economic slowdown was evident in 2009, but businesses used this opportunity to reevaluate their goals and develop strategies that will strengthen them throughout the recovery and beyond. I think 2010 is going to be a much better year for our industry. As an active participant in club events, do you have any advice for new members?

LSU School of Mass Comm. (PR) LSU University Relations kdufau1@tigers.lsu.edu How long have you worked for LSU University Relations, and What kinds of projects are you working on?

I have been working with LSU Communications and University Relations since October of 2009. My most recent duties at my internship have included helping with the execution of the Sesquicentennial event, LSU Day. What’s the most valuable lesson you’ve learned as an intern?

A lesson that I was already taught by both my professor and mentor would be to “make yourself necessary.” This lesson was reaffirmed here at University Relations. Dr. Jinx Broussard taught me that when the opportunity presents itself to show what you can do to fix a problem or concern, take advantage. I have tried to implement this lesson here at my internship by diligently working with the Marketing staff to accomplish our goals. Do you have any advice for your fellow interns?

If you don’t ask, you will never know. I took a chance by emailing this office asking for a position. I asked to job shadow anyone in the office that was willing to offer their time if the first option was not available. Had I not asked, I would not have been given such a great opportunity to learn the skills that I have here at University Relations.
