Hear Chris Stelly tell how Louisiana has become the top location destination for filmmakers across the globe. Learn how Chris and the Louisiana Economic Development staff have helped to cast Louisiana in over 250 productions in the past 5 years and how film production has impacted Louisiana businesses. Since joining the staff of Louisiana Economic Development in 2004, Chris has played a pivotal and leading role in the exponential growth of the film industry in Louisiana. In addition to administering Louisiana’s progressive and innovative tax credit program, he has been an integral part in providing technical assistance to entertainment companies looking to film and establish a nexus in Louisiana. While constantly promoting Louisiana as the best state for production, Chris has become fully committed to educating the citizens and working with the leaders of our state to make Louisiana film an industry for today and for the future.

Mind over matter President’s Message Marielle Land-Howard
I know. From New Year’s Resolutions to To-Do Lists, is there no peace in the world? However, if your New Year’s Resolutions haven’t turned into Action Items or To-Do Lists yet, well, odds are you are not very resolute in them. This year, I resolved to stick with my prescribed ACL reconstruction Physical Therapy (PT) program – a looming and tedious, three-tosix-month prescription, to be exact. I have never done PT. And I have quickly discovered I’d like to never do it again. To make my PT angst worse, I learned that when my surgeon completed my ACL reconstruction, he bent my knee to a full bend and straightened it completely to assure he had left me with a full range of natural motion. He did all of this, and I didn’t cry or complain. In fact, it didn’t hurt, or feel tight or swollen, or impossible at all. Of course, I was unconscious, under anesthesia still. Awake and whining through PT, I can’t bend my knee all the way, still, almost four weeks after surgery. I also can’t straighten it completely due to pain and stiffness. Here’s the kicker – my “inability” to bend and straighten my knee isn’t a physical one at all. Clearly when unimpeded by my conscious brain, my orthopedist could bend and straighten my knee with no resistance. My consciousness, my mind, is the problem here. My perception of discomfort and pain is my roadblock. My mind is stopping my body from doing what it CAN do! My therapist assures me this is how the process works. He says that I am not a freak, and all awake patients who stop doing something because it hurts, when unconscious, will complete the action unimpeded.

show Baton Rouge that AAF-BR isn’t just a bunch of tools! Join AAF-BR for our Habitat for Humanity Work Day on Saturday, February 27 from 7:45 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. The build site is located at Chinn Sreet, Baton Rouge, LA 70807. All I can think is, “Life, Success, Strength, Ability all REALLY DO boil down to Mind Over Matter?!?!” Mind over matter. Mentally deciding to do whatever it takes, regardless of pain, consequences, challenges, hurdles – this is it! It’s The Thing. It’s the Key to Success! So why hasn’t my deciding, even committing to the core of me, to run again resulted in full, painless use of my knee? That’s where the To-Do List comes in. Deciding, committing – that’s the first step, the critical starting point. But one-and-a-half hours of silly exercises that beat me into submission over the next three to six months are the action items that will test, and eventually prove, that commitment. So it looks like we’ve got two choices. Go into permanent comas where we can be put through the paces of our resolutions with no pain or resistance from our bodies, and still get to check them off of our list. Or, wake up, grab our To-Do Lists, check Phase One of our resolutions off, and get down to the work that will make 2010 our best year ever. Personally, I drool a lot when under anesthesia, so I’m going with Option B.
You, Me, and a Portfolio makes Three! AIGA will be holding its annual Student Portfolio Review on March 20 at Delgado Community College in New Orleans. They are in need of local design professionals to volunteer as portfolio reviewers. This is a great opportunity to give back to the design community and get a close look at the up-and-coming student talent. If interested in participating, please contact Courtney Barr, Assistant Professor at LSU, at cbarr3@lsu.edu or 225-578-5413.
BOOK OF THE MONTH Buying In: The Secret Dialogue Between What We Buy and Who We Are | Rob Walker Walker takes a close look at past and present consumerism in the United States, positing that older forms of advertising are no longer successful. He argues that instead of being manipulated by marketing, consumers are using it to their advantage.
I Love It When We’re Kruzin’ Together! Most sincere thanks to all of our AAF-BR members who made a donation and/or participated in this year’s Christmas Toy Drive with the Nubian Kruzers. The Toy Drive was a HUGE success — over 4,000 toys were collected and delivered to the following organizations: CASA, CAFVIC, and WCRC. The Nubian Kruzers also delivered toys to government-assisted housing, three hospitals, and one hospice that currently houses children whose parents have recently passed away. Not only did AAF-BR donate toys at our December Luncheon, but we also made a $500 contribution that was used to purchase gift cards for the women and children who had to spend Christmas in public shelters. AAF-BR members helped the Kruzers gain exposure and publicity for the Toy Drive through in-kind advertising and PR services. We also designed the logo that was used by the Nubian Kruzers on all forms of advertisement for the Toy Drive — collection boxes, flyers, billboards, websites, etc. With our help, a fabulous organization was able to give hope and holiday cheer to many families in our community. Thank you to everyone who came along for the ride!

Director of Communications Amedisys kkimmons@amedisys.com How long have you been a member of AAF-BR?
I was a member of the student Ad Fed at the University of Southern Mississippi and joined the MS Gulf Coast Ad Fed after college, then joined AAF–BR… so, a few years. How has your business/career changed in these years that you have been a member?
My dream was to have people toast my accomplishments from the balconies of New York, but my position now is Director of Communications at Amedisys in Baton Rouge. Sometimes reality is better than dreams. (Do you realize how cold it is in New York in the winter?) Are any of these changes a result of your membership?
Every single job I have had has been a direct result of Ad Fed involvement. What is your favorite club-related memory and/or activity?
Winning Mouth of the South… and oh yeah, meeting my husband!

We love to party, so give us a reason to celebrate! Send in your birthday and club anniversary date to Emily Clemons at emilyadfed@gmail.com.
Then, there are the days that involve making flowers from paper, creating a nearly-life-size pop-up book, delivering toys on motorcycles, and brainstorming in a room with walls of marker board and seats of beanbag chairs… but where’s the fun in that? What do you do for fun?
I’m always up for a mean game of Pictionary, an animated film, or exercising my nerddom. I enjoy organizing things and traveling anywhere I’ve never been while wearing my fanny pack. Mainly, I do all things while pretending my life is a musical and that at any moment the people around me might break into a coordinated song and dance – it makes everything more fun! What are your plans for after graduation?
