AAF-BR Membership Luncheon: Salute to Students and Ralph Sims Award, Juban’s
All across the District, clubs have finished their ADDY® Awards, and now District judging is going on. Even with the down economy, entries were good district-wide with 5,101 professional entries. More excitedly, student entries were up with 1,250 entries. This makes the competition even more meaningful if you win on the district level. Plan to attend the District ADDY® Awards at the Spring Convention in Mobile, AL on April 23. Many other exciting events will be going on at the District 7 Spring Convention. The districtlevel National Student Advertising Competition is a highlight of the convention along with the culmination of other programs and award competitions. LSU has won the District 7 competition twice and placed several times. District 7 will be honoring dedicated and hard-working professionals, educators and students with their Otis Dodge Award, Bolton-MacVicar Award, Donald G. Hileman Award, the Jan Gardner Memorial Scholarship and the Mosaic Scholarship. Many of our AAF-BR members and students have won these awards or scholarships. Local federations and their presidents will be rewarded for their programs and projects in the Club Achievement and Club of the Year competitions. AAF-Baton Rouge has won Club of the Year a record number of 12 times, more than any other club in the District. I encourage you to make the short drive over to Mobile for the District 7 Spring Convention and experience what makes District 7 such a trend-setting leader with AAF. Register at www.7thaaf.com.

Humility President’s Message Marielle Land-Howard
I have never failed to take care of myself, for the most part. I am a warrior. I am a “doer.” That’s my personality. I conquer mountains. It’s what makes me strong. It’s also what makes me appear arrogant. My strength is also my greatest weakness. I have a REALLY hard time asking for help. It is very difficult for me to trust others to help me work. No, this isn’t therapy and I’m not laying out my personal problems for pity, nor feedback. I am sharing my limitations to make the impact of the next statement all the more powerful. I would have completely failed in the last six months if it were not for the help and support of incredibly talented and generous people. If you know me at all, you know what a mouthful I’ve just shared. I would have utterly failed.
With more than 60,000 entries annually, the national ADDY® Awards are the world’s largest and arguably toughest advertising competition. At the AAF-BR ceremony, 41 gold ADDY®s, 50 silver ADDY®s, three Special Judge’s Awards, a Mosaic Award, Best of Show, Best of Category and four People’s Choice awards were presented. Advertising students were recognized with 17 gold ADDY®s, 19 silver ADDY®s, a Best of Show and Special Judges’ Awards. ADDY® 2010* also recognized professional excellence on the business side of the advertising industry with its Pinnacle Awards. Congrats to all the winners! Individuals who bought tickets online through addy2010.com were registered into the drawing for two special prizes. The first was a “green home package” donated by Tiffany Theriot and Green Gala, won by Nancy Steiner of Diane Allen & Associates. The package includes recyclable and compostable items for everyday use around the home (plates, paper towels, cups and a banana paper stationary kit). The second prize was an overnight stay at Nottoway Plantation and a $75 gift certificate to the Mansion Restaurant, won by Chantel Michel with BRZ.
It is with a full, flawed and humbled heart that I look around at an amazing group of people I never imagined I would consider friends, much less trust my professional well-being to. If it weren’t for those serving and working with me having so much to teach me, I would be a babbling idiot. If it weren’t for the kindness of people, individuals with no monetary nor personal gain to be had in helping me, saving me from crushing responsibilities and myself, I would be completely exposed.
Other AAF-BR committees used the ADDY®s to their advantage. Public Service Chair, Shannon Perry, sold 27 Habitat for Humanity t-shirts and raised $135 for the charity. LSU AAF raised $300 with their silent intern auction. Students who didn’t receive bids Saturday will be up for auction again at our March luncheon. Thank you to all who participated!
When you look around you, are you AMAZED by those that pick up your slack? Do you see HEROES among the people that work beside you?
Special thanks to Jason Feirman and Theresa Overby and their incredible committee for putting on such an entertaining, organized and creative show!
If you don’t, one of two things is true. Either your heart could use a stretch and learning to trust others would open your eyes to the miracle of generosity and excellence all around you. Or, you need to surround yourself with a better quality circle of friends, co-workers or co-volunteers. I am blessed and I know it. I can never say Thank You enough. But I will keep trying to.
Oops! Marie Constantin won a gold ADDY® for her photography campaign “Change by Faith: FMOL Health System ‘09 Annual Report,” but she was left out of the press release! Congrats on winning a gold, Marie!

E.A. “PETE” GOLDSBY SILVER MEDAL AWARD FOR LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT ELIZABETH PERRY HARRIS DEVILLE & ASSOCIATES
Unlike many past Goldsby Silver Award winners, Elizabeth Perry is not an agency owner, high-powered CEO, or publishing mogul. However, what she has been for over two decades is a steady force of advertising professionalism and the embodiment of everything this prestigious award represents. For over 20 years, Elizabeth has worked as a graphic designer at Harris Deville & Associates (HDA) producing award-winning work and managing national, regional and local advertising campaigns for hundreds of clients. Elizabeth consistently mentors the many interns at HDA, and works closely with the firm’s young associates to support their professional development. Throughout her advertising career, Elizabeth has worked selflessly to build a better Baton Rouge through a number of volunteer efforts. She frequently offers her professional services to her church, teaches Bible school, served as a board member for Of Moving Colors Dance Company, is active with Volunteers in Public Schools helping young students improve their reading skills, and consistently helps out with the Downtown Lions Cub Sight program that provides free eyesight screenings for kids. Elizabeth is extremely devoted to the LSU School of Graphic Design, supporting it both monetarily and with a fierce dedication to the students, whom she helps through mentoring, portfolio reviews and coaching for job interviews. Elizabeth’s incredible service to the community, students and the advertising profession is best showcased in her 17 years as a board member of AAF Baton Rouge. During her tenure on the board, Elizabeth has chaired or co-chaired just about every committee—some of them twice. She was awarded our Silver Medal Volunteer of the year and won the 7th District President of the Year in 1999. She co-chaired the 2001 District Spring Convention held here in Baton Rouge and was an integral part in the 50th Anniversary program. She’s volunteered numerous years to serve as club treasurer and has literally donated THOUSANDS of hours of her time to our Ad Fed.
-
On a 7th District level, she’s served as a state director, assisted with club services, chaired a range of programs, won membership recruitment awards, was selected as the district’s 2005 Otis Dodge Volunteer of the Year Award, served on the executive committee for four years, and, as her crowning achievement, is set to become district governor in 2011. Elizabeth has earned a reputation for always going above and beyond the realm of duty, whether dressing like a cow to raise money for our club or dressing up at a district convention in full-fledged toga apparel as “Recrutia… Goddess of Membership.” (Yes, she likes to dress up.) She is totally dedicated to students in our market and around the district, and usually judges both student and professional ADDY competitions in other markets each year. During this nomination, numerous AAF members from our local club as well as the 7th District spoke not only about Elizabeth’s dedication to our profession, but the fun-loving, exciting attitude she brings with her to every task. Throughout her career and steady involvement in the AAF, Elizabeth’s greatest achievement is that she has mentored, developed, improved and helped grow the careers of hundreds of advertising professionals not only in Baton Rouge, but across the southeastern United States. Best of all, you can bet she will continue her service over the years and we will all be richer for it. Here’s to you, Tootie!
THE E.A.“PETE” GOLDSBY SILVER AWARD The highest personal award presented by the American Advertising Federation - Baton Rouge is the Pete Goldsby Award, presented each year to the person who has made the greatest lifetime contribution to the advertising profession.

During this year’s service to the board, she was initially assigned the Workshops Committee, where she planned and executed more workshops in the first three months of her tenure than had been done in the last two years combined. She chose locations, aided and partnered in finding speakers, and also secured, managed and thanked sponsors. To fill a void, Mandy happily moved to the Communications Committee only to lose her Communications co-chair a month after stepping in. She brought to press a stationary package, redesigned the newsletter, banners, membership applications and the weekly E-news. Mandy completed these projects in a two-month period, adding her own design flair and enlisting the help of Hunter Territo and Sara Dickerhoof to make up for her Co-Chair’s absence. Mandy also played an important role in helping the Programs Committee bring Gary Vaynerchuk to Baton Rouge, all while running her own business. And she made some killer props for our Mouth of the South skit. Not to mention, she was the first person to log on to www.addy2010.com to purchase her tickets to the ADDY® 2010 awards show. Mandy is known for her attention to detail and her dedication to getting things done efficiently and effectively. On a side note, Mandy also likes to get crafty in her spare time by scrapbooking, creating custom invitations and decorating for events. Each year she paints various crafts for Alexis’ Angel Sale, an annual benefit for the Louisiana Organ Procurement Agency. She also loves Italian food and Grey’s Anatomy.
THE PRESIDENT’S SERVICE AWARD The board of directors present the silver medal award annually to the member in good standing who has given the most toward the betterment of the American Advertising Federation - Baton Rouge and its activities during the previous calendar year.

How long have you been a member of AAF-BR?
Bumping on 20 years; but memory fades. In your opinion, what is the best benefit of AAF-BR membership?
Getting to stay close to the edge of creativity and projects by paying attention to what members do daily. The best part of getting REALLY involved (as a board member) is fantastic training and experience in running a substantial organization. What new and interesting projects are you working on?
I am extremely proud that as a board member of the four-state Southern Public Relations Federation, I created a committee and relied on my years of AdFed experience to totally rip off the AdFed Club of the Year awards. My committee just awarded our Federation’s first-ever Club of Distinction and President of the Year awards. It is now an annual thing, and people are already looking forward to the next one. (Thanks AdFed! ) That and trying to figure out how to publish our major biannual publication for half the cost of the last one we did pretty much wraps up the big things.
