January2009 Interactive Marketing: Moving Beyond Brochure Sites
The rise of mobile devices, e-commerce and online video means you and your clients have new ways to get ‘er done online. Learn how to sell and deliver sites that do more than look pretty. Derricott’s 12 years of experience building compelling websites and software applications is uniquely balanced with a strong respect and understanding for visual design. And speaking of getting ‘er done…this year alone, Derricott garnered the prestigious Best of State for web development and was named a Top Forty Under 40 entrepreneur by Utah Business Magazine. All this without a single pocket protector or Star Trek action figure in his arsenal.
Brett Derricott Founder & CEO Agency Fusion
The only thing that matches Derricott’s love of all things techy is his fervent pursuit of decidedly un-techy outdoor adventure. There are few depths of the world’s oceans that he has not viewed through his SCUBA mask. He also sheds his gills now and again while rock climbing and boating Utah’s myriad of playspaces.

Happy New Year indeed! I came across a quote recently that stated, “You get what you focus on.” And I have to admit I believe it. In so many ways we lose sight of our goals because we’re distracted. So, stay focused and take every opportunity that comes your way. With ADDYs and our Spring Convention just around the corner, this year will quickly begin ticking

Each year, AAF-BR awards two scholarships to assist and support outstanding students who show professional promise and commitment to advertising. The award is open to Advertising, Electronic Media, Graphic Design, Journalism, Marketing, Political Communication, Public Relations, or Communications Education students in the Greater Baton Rouge area. Application deadline is April 16, 2009. A selection committee will choose TWO of the most qualified candidates – one for a general scholarship and one for a diversity scholarship. Winners will be announced at the May 1, 2009 member luncheon and in the May 2009 newsletter. Each winner will receive a $1,000 scholarship to be applied to his or her current university, as well as a one-year honorary membership in AAF-BR. For more information please download the PDF on the website at www.aafbr.org. Please direct questions to Jason Feirman at jfeirma@lsu.edu or (225) 578-1887.
Advertisers, bikers and rotarians went HOG wild at the AAF-BR holiday party on Dec. 17, collecting nearly 50 toys for children at Our Lady of the Lake Children’s Hospital and the Gus Young housing project. More than $50 in individual donations were also collected. Special thanks to all AAF-BR members who participated in the drive, as well as the Capital City Rotarians. Both clubs donated $500 each! Much appreciation goes to the Nubian Kruzers who delivered the toys to happy recipients on Dec. 21. As an added attraction, several advertising students auctioned themselves off as Santa’s Helpers, raising $430 to help fund the National Student Advertising Competition (NSAC). Students up for auction included Lauren Culbertson, Rachelle David, Rebecca Felix, Tina Le, Paulina Nguyen, Andrew Reilly, Patricia Sterpu and Jill Whitley.
Gatorworks, a Baton Rouge design and web firm, recently launched its new website at www.gatorworks.net. The completion of the website marks the final piece of a new branding strategy that includes a new logo, business cards, letterhead and various printed media. It features a blog system that integrates social media applications such as Twitter, Flickr and Last.fm.
In addition to the usual online features, such as company information, product portfolio and employment information, the site will include blog entries and other fun features such as musical favorites of Gatorworks’ employees. “Our company’s capabilities extend beyond just web design,” said Rodriguez. “We have completed a wide variety of graphic design projects such as logos, print ads and trade show displays. We hope to communicate our versatility through our new website.” Gatorworks has been based in Baton Rouge since 2004. They have designed and currently manage over 150 websites for small to mid-sized companies across the United States. Visit www.gatorworks.net to learn more about the firm, or call Brian Rodriguez directly at 225-709-6153.
As the only non-graphic designer employed at STUN Design and Advertising, my hands are in just about everything. My current responsibilities as Events and Marketing Coordinator allow me to do everything from brainstorming marketing strategies and ad copy to managing client accounts and in-house organization. I am also heading up our newest venture to offer our clients event marketing and coordination. After working as the campaign coordinator for District Attorney Hillar Moore’s campaign, we realized what a strong correlation event coordinating has with marketing and graphic design. We are excited to bring events to a new level in Baton Rouge, combining event planning with creative concepts and designs. I also keep busy managing STUN Design owner Chuck Sanchez’s other business, PrintedBIG.com. Joining AdFed was something that was imperative to stay in tune with the design and marketing industry, as well as stay connected and build new relationships with the inspiring professionals in this great city.

“The new site allows our team of graphic designers and developers the opportunity to contribute blog entries that relate to current design trends, usability critiques and case studies of our projects and those of our industry peers,” said Gatorworks President/ CEO Brian Rodriguez. “I feel the new website will be a great tool for others in the industry and better represent our company as a progressive young design firm.”

I think “lightly seasoned member” is a more appropriate moniker here, as I’ve only been a member for four years and this is my second year as a board member. I moved to Baton Rouge from Seattle in 2003 to escape the dreary weather and shoveling snow, but recent weather events prove the snow will always follow me! Being new to town can be intimidating, so I joined the Ad Fed as a way to integrate with local professionals and apply my talents and experience to local business and design firms (wink-wink, nod-nod). I’ve been a Graphic Designer and Project Manager for about 25 years now. Having worked in Dallas and Seattle, it’s easy to get lost in the shuffle and feel disconnected. But it’s been a different story here in Baton Rouge. Last year, I organized the BizarreBazaar Art Auction and was floored by how many Ad Fed members stepped up to help and not just give me lip service. And again this year, as Programs Chair, I’ve relied on members to point me in the right direction to find and secure luncheon speakers. My goal this year was to recruit engaging speakers with pertinent subject matter that’s attractive to our membership and hopefully gain a few new ones along the way. Bottom line: Make ‘em come back. It’s been my pleasure serving you!
