Take Advantage of Your AAF Benefits Did you know your AAF-BR membership includes a membership in AAF? One benefit of AAF membership is a free daily e-mail newsletter called SmartBrief. This online publication, designed specifically for advertisers, agencies and media companies, provides the latest need-to-know industry news and information. And it’s FREE. Sign up today at www.AAF.org. Looking ahead to 2009 What’s coming up next for the advertising and marketing industry? The AAF SmartBrief special year-end report highlights its predictions for what’s in store for 2009. The coming year will be challenging for the marketing and advertising industry. In fact, leading media researchers and market analysts predict that ad spending will continue to dip in 2009. Online spending is still projected to grow — by 5 percent by one leading estimate — but the rate of growth is slowing. CMOs and agencies will face increasing pressure to show return on investment in this more-constricted spending environment. On the government front, President Barack Obama’s media and marketing agenda may include eliminating the deductibility of marketing expenses for businesses, as well as restrictions on direct-to-consumer pharmaceutical advertising and food and beverage advertising that runs on TV programming and Web content for children. What’s the good news? Even in a diminished economic climate, people will continue to buy consumer packaged goods, fuel for their cars, clothes and other necessities of life. And where consumers are spending, there will be advertising and marketing to try to influence their choices. AAF SmartBrief will be covering news and trends from the advertising and marketing industries throughout the year.

For the love of Leslie, don’t skip the check-in table!

Why do the AAF-BR board members ask you to check in at the monthly luncheon when you’ve already RSVPd? After all…you’ve got people to see, friends to hug and schmoozing that simply cannot wait. While your board members do try to think of creative ways to torture you, there is a reason for the stopping point. It’s money. And we can potentially save a lot of it if we are charged for the number of attendees rather than the number of RSVPs. By comparing the two lists, we usually come out way ahead.

Each year, AAF-BR awards two scholarships to assist and support outstanding students who show professional promise and commitment to advertising. The award is open to Advertising, Electronic Media, Graphic Design, Journalism, Marketing, Political Communication, Public Relations, or Communications Education students in the Greater Baton Rouge area. Application deadline is April 16, 2009.

And if that’s not a good enough reason to check in first, then you should know you are sorely missed each month by our club’s Executive Director, Leslie Cole. So if you don’t do it for the club, do it for our Leslie.
