So, what IS the Spring Convention you ask? Well, it’s an event held each April and hosted by one of the 23 clubs in AAF District 7, which includes the states: Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi and Tennessee. Board members from these clubs attend the event for professional development, networking, socializing and to get general insight into the advertising industry. What happens at the convention? Friday begins with one of the highlights of the event, the daylong student advertising competition. Teams from some of the 30 college chapters across District 7 compete for a chance to move on to the National Student Advertising Competition held at the AAF National Conference in June. There are also professional development workshops and Secretary of State Jay Dardenne will be the featured speaker at a joint luncheon with the local AAF-BR membership. Friday night kicks off with a crawfish boil at the Old State Capitol and then the District ADDY® Awards, where local winners compete to move on to the National ADDY® competition. Saturday includes more professional development workshops, as well as Raising Cane’s Todd Graves as our lunch guest and speaker. Saturday night culminates with the Governor’s Gala as Baton Rouge’s own Curtis Vann is inducted as the 2009-2010 District 7 Governor.

10. It’s in Baton Rouge, so why not? 9. You should check out a few teams competing in the student advertising competition and see who might be competing for your job one day. 8. You’ll be attending the lunch Friday anyway, so stick around and check out the vibe. 7. The District ADDY Awards are in town, so enjoy some crawfish and take a gander at some of the best advertising in the Deep South. 6. You need some tips on how to spice up your party planning techniques at the “Event- er-vention” workshop with Nicole David. 5. It’s a great chance to learn more about how your business can capitalize on the green/ sustainability movement at the workshop with Amy Gatz. 4. Now’s your chance to go inside the making of the “Louisiana 2 Step” campaign with Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Louisiana’s John Maginnis. 3. You don’t often get to have lunch with Todd Graves and get the scoop on Raising Cane’s success. 2. You deserve to party down at the Governor’s Gala Saturday night in the gorgeous Heidelberg Room at the Hilton. 1. The conference only comes to Baton Rouge once every five or six years and most of the day events are free to our club members. So what are you waiting for? A complete agenda of all activities and events is on the website at: www.aaf7spring.com. Tickets for the District ADDY® Awards and the Governor’s Gala can be purchased online. To take advantage of the special AAF-BR member discount for the Saturday lunch with Todd Graves, please contact Jeff English at jeffenglish@cox.net.

Get the real poop on a career in advertising & media Many outside the profession consider advertising useless waste that fuels our mass consumption in a society of excess and greed. Well, they’re half right. The world is full of crappy communicators bombarding us with products and services we don’t really need. Then, there are those who use the medium to inform, inspire, make us laugh and create brands that we not only use, but that become a part of our lives. Want to know more about these kinda’ people? Join us for the 2009 American Advertising Federation–Baton Rouge Student Conference and discover how the area’s finest copywriters, designers, media buyers, and photographers keep their profession from becoming #2.

My experiences in the advertising industry have taught me to always stay connected and stay on top of the latest trends. I feel that the Ad Fed is the perfect environment to do this. I have already reconnected with many old friends and colleagues from the Baton Rouge area, and I look forward to building many new relationships in 2009.

Keith A. Stark Graphic Designer Moran Printing

I’ve been a graphic designer and prepress specialist for Moran Printing in Baton Rouge since 2004. Ad Fed has always been a valuable careerdevelopment tool for me, both during college and afterward. Through Ad Fed, I'm provided opportunities to network, opportunities to showcase my work and abilities, and opportunities to learn and gain valuable insight into changes in the industry. Now that I’m a board member, I look forward to serving our members and getting more involved with the club.

the Club?

Not long after graduating from LSU in 2002, I left Baton Rouge to discover a new life and career in the far northwest. After knocking down doors in a very tough economy, I managed to pick up a job as a graphic designer at my first advertising agency. This is where I was first introduced to the American Advertising Federation on a national level. In 2006, I decided to move back to Baton Rouge, and knew that I had to find the local Ad Fed right away. Over the last couple of years, I have attended numerous meetings and networking events, but I have finally joined as a member this year.

Francelle Theriot’

Partner – 2121 Design | Marketing | Advertising Francelle Theriot’s career began in the early 1980s while in the graphic design program at LSU, when she started freelancing for small clients to gain experience. Her first printed design was a pro bono piece for the Special Olympics. After receiving her degree, Francelle joined a large agency as a graphic designer and quickly learned the big picture of the advertising business from Baton Rouge’s seasoned agency professionals. She worked in Baton Rouge, guiding art and creative direction in a number of area agencies. As opportunities arose on projects, Francelle broadened her skills to meet them. After six years in the agency business, she joined a popular post-production facility and illustrated a career path into the world of broadcast design and animation. In 1990, Francelle, along with partner/husband Kirk Theriot, founded 2121 Graphics, Inc. – now known as 2121 Design, Marketing and Advertising. Their business model combines the art of traditional communication design with the skills of sophisticated multi-media production. The firm provides solutions for integrating marketing, advertising and design and is a well-respected, award-winning ad agency that serves Louisiana’s top corporate clients, as well as many non-profit organizations. Francelle has a huge heart for serving her clients and the community with her talents … from manning the food bank at church, to producing events and fund-raisers. Francelle served several terms as a board member for the American Advertising Federation – Baton Rouge, chairing commit-

tees both locally and regionally, and later serving on the executive board. As one admirer put it, “Francelle will dance, sing, act, sew, paint, sand, hammer, judge, volunteer, hike, collect, donate, solicit, update, recruit, and pay from her own pocket. There is nothing she will not do for the sake of AAF-BR or for the betterment of our Baton Rouge community.” Her professional honors include: ADDY® and Telly Awards; Lantern Awards (Southern Public Relations Federation); a Pollie Award (Association of Political and Public Affairs Professionals); the 2002 Capital Area United Way Community Awareness Award; 2001-02 Advertising Federation Silver Award; 1997 Charles Langer Best of Show Copy Writing; 1997 Best of the Best in Healthcare Advertising; and recognition from the YMCA of the Capital Area for outstanding volunteer service. Her work has also been published in Print’s Regional Design Annual. Throughout her career she has fostered the AAF-BR’s intern program, mentoring to future leaders. Students from many institutions, including LSU, Southern University, local art schools and even high school programs have interned with 2121 Design under Francelle’s careful tutelage. Despite her many accomplishments, contributions and demands from her career, Francelle manages to keep her family on the forefront. Her children – Micah, Austen and Lindsey – are her pride and joy. Her husband – Kirk – is her partner and best friend. Francelle’s ability to successfully balance family and career is an inspiration in itself.

Kelley Criscoe

Marketing Specialist –Associated Grocers, Inc. If you ask Kelley Criscoe how she got involved with the AAFBR, she’ll tell you she got “sucked in.” But if you know her, you know there’s no way she could hold herself back. She’s not built that way. Kelley admits to joining AAF-BR in 2005 strictly at the urging of her then boss, Saundra Lane. Saundra told her the club would be a good fit and these folks would be “her kind of people.” Kelley had her doubts. Saundra was right. Kelley also swears she had no plans to get involved with the board or the committees. Fast-forward three years to this service record: • • • • • • • •

Membership Committee: 2005 – 2006 Membership Committee Co-Chair: 2007 – 2008 13th Gate Ad Fed Social Committee: 2005 – 2008 ADDY® Committee: 2006 – 07 ADDY® Co-Chair: 2008 – 09 Media Auction Committee: 2005 – 2006; 2006 – 2007; 2007 – 2008 AAF District 7 Membership Coordinator: 2008 to present AAF-BR Vice President: 2008 to present

The AAF-BR board of directors chose Kelley as the recipient of the 2006-07 Rising Star Award, which is presented each year to a new member who has participated actively in club activities, contributed to the betterment of the club and set a shining example for other members during his or her first year of membership. Kelley’s extensive background in event planning and local marketing made her a perfect fit (and a target) for her participation on the board. She is a classic overachiever, always jumping in with both feet and giving 200 percent to everything she does. Oh yeah, and she’s a single mom. Two-year-old Wesley is the absolute apple of her eye. Somehow Kelley is able to juggle her job responsibilities, her demanding roles in AAF-BR and the joys of motherhood. To see Kelley in action you would never guess all of the pressure she is under. She handles it with professionalism and enthusiasm. Despite her early reluctance in joining AAF-BR back in 2005, Kelley admits to happily being proven wrong and having an incredibly rewarding experience. Our club has benefited greatly from her tireless commitment and countless hours of service. In return, we proudly honor Kelley Criscoe with the 2008-09 President’s Service Award.
