How I spent my summer vacation…

It’s amazing what a dedicated group of people can accomplish. While you were away, the board of directors has been steadily planning the upcoming ‘08-09 year. And what year it will be. From Green to Governor, AAF-BR will make its mark. Our first speaker, Colette Chandler, will discuss the importance of “going green” and its effect on branding. Shortly after, in October we’ll hold our media auction. This is our biggest fundraiser -please consider donating to it! In April 2009, Baton Rouge will host the District 7 Spring Conference where our very own Curtis Vann will have the distinction of being inducted as district governor. Please take advantage of the many opportunities to get involved in the club. I thank you for being a member and look forward to the year ahead. Thankfully, Ace

Join us for some slick talking to officially kick off planning for the 2009 Spring Convention. Baton Rouge’s own Curtis Vann will be installed as the 2009-2010 AAF District 7 Governor at this convention, slated for April 16-19, 2009, at the Hilton Baton Rouge Capitol Center. Now’s your chance to showcase your crooked creativity by getting involved in one of the many fun and exciting committees. If you can’t attend but are interested in participating, contact Carol Shirley at 225.231.1999, or carolshirley@mac.com. You can also sign up on the website at http://www.adfedgbr.com/rsvp_form.php. Sponsorships Needed for Spring Convention Advertising professionals from five states will converge on Baton Rouge at the AAF District 7 Spring Convention on April 16, 2009. Our club will also host the AAF-Student Advertising Competition in which students from 31 universities in District 7 will compete for an opportunity to represent the district in the national competition. District 7 includes Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi and Tennessee. Sponsorships are needed to help make these events a success! Sponsorship opportunities are available before, during and after the convention. Your company’s exposure to Baton Rouge advertising professionals – including nearly 200 AAF-BR members alone – will include an immediate presence on the website, E-News, promotions at monthly membership luncheons and monthly newsletters. Let’s showcase Baton Rouge and the great things that are happening right here in our own city and state! Welcome Our Newbies!

Although I was raised in Baton Rouge and graduated from LSU, I chose to take a job out of market to start my career. So when I later decided to return home, as a professional, I knew I was going to be viewing Baton Rouge from a totally different perspective than I did as a student. I wasn’t sure what avenues it had to offer newcomers. I got my answer shortly after joining Wright Feigley Communications when I received a call from Marielle Land-Howard. Marielle introduced me to Ad Fed and other members of the board. I was very impressed with Ad Fed’s new member outreach efforts and quickly became comfortable at the monthly luncheons and other events. Ad Fed has not only given me the opportunity to meet new people, but, with its strong membership, it has offered me a way to quickly become familiar with the advertising network here in Baton Rouge. Wright Feigley Communications opened its doors nearly two years ago, and shares in Ad Fed’s enthusiasm for the future of Baton Rouge. I believe we have a great opportunity as new and existing businesses grow, and unique projects – such as the development of the downtown area and capitol complex – continue to succeed. We look forward to becoming more and more involved in the community and thank Ad Fed for giving us a chance to share this excitement with our peers.

Baton Rouge-based Rockit Science Agency will develop new branding for PMS 470, the U.S. Navy’s Mine, Amphibious, Auxiliary and Command Ships Program Office. The ad agency will provide branding and design work for future brands, logos and overall creative concepts. “This is a tremendous opportunity for the agency, it will allow us to assist with the Navy’s modernization of their brands,” Rockit Science President Brad BonGiovanni says. Capt. Johnny Walker, program manager for PMS 470, the Washington Navy Yard, will oversee the two- to three-month project. Walker says Rockit was chosen for its global marketing approach.

I’m one of the new AAF-BR Board Members, but I’ve been a club member the longest! I’ve been an Ad Fed member my entire professional career. I’m a graduate of LSU in Advertising/ Journalism. I have worked in the ad agency business (Diane Allen and Assoc.), higher education (LSU-PR), freelance (Th’ng Design) and not-for-profit (Woman’s Hospital). I’ve started a business (Nekkid Girls Designs) helping my daughter market her custom jewelry. My recent volunteer time has focused on activities that involve my daughter. Last summer I took a bunch of teenage Girl Scouts to Italy, so I’m good at organizing chaos. Since I’ve just packed my daughter off to college I’ve jumped full force back into Ad Fed. I’m the Communications Co-Chair with Colleen Jackson and I’m this newsletter’s designer. I’m excited about the upcoming media auction, I’ve heard some exciting ideas about this year’s ADDYs. And what a privilege we have this year to be the host city for the AAF District convention. I’m looking forward to being in the thick of all this great activity this next year!
