Åge Myhre er utdannet sivilarkitekt og byutvikler; også med lang erfaring som journalist, redaktør, bedriftsleder, eiendomsutvikler og samfunnsbygger. Han vokste opp sør på øya Senja i Troms fylke, Nord-Norge. ÅM holder en M.Sc. of Civil Engineering (Institutt for Arkitektur) fra NTH / NTNU, Trondheim, med videreutdanning innen Arkitekturpsykologi fra Frankrike, og Management for Presidents fra Belgia / Italia. ÅM har tilbrakt nærmere 25 år av livet utenfor Norge, i praktisk talt hvert hjørne av vår verden.

Med en teglstein fra den 500 år gamle bymuren rundt Gamlebyen i Vilnius, Litauen.

Han har jobbet som arkitekt, byutvikler, journalist og innen ledelse siden 1980. Han har også en 44-årig parallell karriere som investor, journalist, redaktør, markedsfører, filantrop og fellesskapsbygger. ÅM har vært aktivt involvert i litauiske forhold siden 1990 – innen politikk, næringsliv, utenlandsinvesteringer, media, arkitektur og generell utvikling av nasjonen. Det å bidra til å redde og gjenoppbygge den unike Gamlebyen i Vilnius – Europas kanskje største og mest genuine middelalderby – har representert et hovedfokus.

ÅM har også stått bak en rekke samfunnstiltak – i utvikling av frie media, dialog på statlig nivå samt i lokalsamfunn. Han har vært aktiv i veldedighet og frivillighetsarbeid – for barnehjemsbarn, samt i kampen mot menneskehandel, vold mot kvinner og mer. Høsten 2013 vendte ÅM tilbake til Norge.

Barndom med fiske, fangst, skog- og jordbruk på Øya Senja i Troms Fylke, født i 1953 som sist i en søskenflokk på fem til et bittelite småbruk uten innlagt elektrisitet, WC/bad,, eller vei ut til omverdenen. Slitsomt, hardt arbeid fra 3-årsalderen. Faren var sjøsame fra Nordkynhalvøya lengst nord i Finnmark. Morens familie var bondeinnvandrere fra Hedmark.

Åge ble født på sykehuset midt i byen her i april 1953, men etter få dager brakte det moderlige opphav ham til oppvekst på familiesmåbruket på Olaheim, Senja. Han kom tilbake for å gå på ungdomsskole og gymnas i Harstad, der han også ble politisk aktiv i Unge Høyre. Kveldene ble som oftest brukt til å arbeide som murerhåndlanger og innen andre håndverksfag. Studiene måtte jo betales!

Dette var den heller tørre, lakoniske, men smilende avskjedshilsen Åge fikk fra yrkesveilederen i det han var ferdig med sin avsluttende eksamen ved Harstad Gymnas (Examen Artium) i juni 1972.

Kavaleriets rekruttskole på Trandum nord for Oslo ble militærtjenestens første stopp for Åge. Så Stridsvogneskadronen på Bardufoss der han utfoldet seg som skytter på stridsvogn, i administrativ jobb og innen ABC spesialtjeneste. 4

ÅM startet arkitektstudier på NTH (NTNU) i 1974. Han ble der også valgt til sjefredaktør for arkitektavdelingens publikasjon ”A” og til medlem av redaktørkollegiet for Trondheimsstudentenes egen avis – ”Under Dusken.”

Høsten 1974:

Venezia lærte ÅM at arkitektur først og fremst handler om mennesker – mindre om bygninger. Han skrev og fotograferte; laget sitt aller første nummer av magasinet A. Hans liv med arkitektur & journalistikk var i gang.

Mastergrad fra NTH, mars 1980 ”Åge Myhre, born on April 26th 1953, has been awarded the Norwegian degree of SIVILINGENIØR at the Department of Architecture in March 1980. The degree “Sivilingeniør” applies to to graduates from all engineering departments. The Norwegian Institute of Technology considers the degree “Sivilingeniør” equivalent to the American degree Master of Science in Engineering.

Journalist i Norges eldste avis, ærverdige Våren 1975 ble ÅM valgt ut blant mer enn 500 søkere og fikk jobb som journalist i ærverdige Adresseavisen, Norges eldste avis. Sjefredaktør Ålstedt ga ham frie hender til å slåss for å bevare gamle Trondheim. Sommeren 1975 skrev han nedenstående, avslørende artikkel. Den medførte at lederen for Trondheim rehabiliteringsutvalg (datidens byantikvar) ble sparket. Den unge journalistspiren svettet på ryggen, men Trondheims sjel og særpreg ble reddet for fremtiden.

Journalist og forkjemper for Norges arkitektur- og kulturarv siden 1975 I 1975 startet ÅM en mangeårig kamp for å redde gamle Trondheim – de fine bydelene Møllenberg, Bakklandet, Ilsvikøra og Hospitalsløkkan, samt de vakre bryggerekkene og også store deler av Trondheims Midtby. Etterkrigstidens Norge likte stål og betong bedre enn gamle trebygninger … Samtidig startet han en kamp mot det han så som dumskap, skjevheter og urett i samfunnet. Adresseavisen ga ham frie tøyler, og lot ham reise Skandinavia rundt. Mange artikler. Noen viktige.

ÅM på Bakklandet 42 år senere – nå Trondheims mest attraktive bydel!

Fargene, livet og gleden er tilbake – 42 år etter at bydelen skulle vært jevnet med jorden til fordel for en motorvei her langs Nidelvens bredd. 11

ÅM har lenge kjempet for å redde Norges tradisjonsrike arkitekturarv Arkitekturvernåret 1975 ble på mange måter et vendepunkt mht nordmenns forståelse av hvor viktig vår kultur- og arkitekturarv er. ÅM reiste lande og strand rundt for å skrive om truede, men vakre objekter og problemtilfeller. I tett samarbeid med Fylkeskonservatorene og Riksantikvaren.

Siden 1975 har Ă&#x2026;M arbeidet for ĂĽ bidra til redde, bevare, renovere og videreutvikle norsk kystkultur og -arkitektur

ARKITEKTURPSYKOLOGI

Etter ferdig mastergrad ved NTH ønsket ÅM å lære mer om hvordan våre fysiske omgivelser påvirker oss mennesker. Arkitekturpsykologi-studiene i Strasbourg 1981-82 ga ham noen svar, og han ble for alvor kjent med Europa – vår egen, fascinerende verdensdel!

ÅM ble administrerende direktør i en alder av 28, og forsto fort at han måtte lære mer om ledelse og management. Ett års intensivkurs fikk sin konklusjon i vakre, ærverdige Hotel Villa d’Este ved Comosjøen i Italia.

Han ble ĂĽrets markedsfĂ¸rer i Trondheim. Fikk Robert Millar-prisen. Kanskje eneste gang en arkitekt har fĂĽtt denne prisen?

Fokus på levende byer, med Norges første bykarneval som høydepunkt! En av hans kjepphester var at det ikke er nok å restaurere bygninger og gater i en by. De er kun kulisser. Byer må leve! Ute i Europa opplevde han at byer lever selv i kulde og vintermørke. Han kom tilbake til Trondheim og arrangerte i 1983 en utstilling kombinert med debatter og konferanser under paraplyen ”En levende by”. Norges første bykarneval ble en essensiell del av arrangementet. Midt på vinteren!

Han fant opp et nytt ord og begrep; IDÉDUGNAD Hvordan kan lokale myndigheter, institusjoner og folk flest bedre samarbeide for å skape gode byer, nabolag og hele samfunn?, spurte han – og starter en aksjonsplan sammen med Trondheim Kommune. Byen fikk en ny giv, og ny-ordet spredte seg raskt over landet. En av de beste tilvekster til det norske språk i nyere tid, uttalte Norsk Språkråd. Ordet Idédugnad kom raskt inn i norske ordbøker og ble allemannseie i løpet av kort tid …

1980-tallet:

ÅM ledet Norges største messe/kongressarrangement Et annerledes forum der det fokusertes på viktige forhold om hvordan vi bygger, bor og lever her i landet. En sprudlende Kong Olav kom for å åpne i 1984 … Direktøren var nervøs.

ÅM ble i Trondheim til 1986 – starter reisebyrå (fortsatt i drift), arrangerer Norges matmesse sammen med Ingrid Espelid Hovig, arrangerer den norske reiselivsmessen ’Fristende feriemål’ i 1985, og begynte for alvor å legge kloden under sine føtter ved å reise til land i alle verdensdeler – alle, bortsett fra Australia – til nå. Ă&#x2026;M: Arkitektur, bevaring, renovering og byutvikling i mer enn 40 ĂĽr

ÅRENE MED OG I LITAUEN 1990 – 2013

Thorvald Stoltenberg, Kjell Magne Bondevik og småbrukersønnen fra Senja har det til felles at de har blitt tildelt den litauiske stats æresbevisning for deres innsats under frigjøringen av landet i 1990 -1991 og for senere fremragende bidrag til det bilaterale samarbeid mellom Norge og Litauen. 23

Da Sovjet-styrkene okkuperte Baltikum i januar 1991 reiste han til Vilnius og sto pĂĽ barrikadene med Litauens President Vytautas Landsbergis

Oslo ble Vilnius’ første vennskapsby i Vest – i januar 1991 Sovjetiske militærkjøretøyer dominerte gatene i Vilnius da han i januar 1991 utgjorde halvparten av en tomannsdelegasjon som overrakte brev til Borgermesteren. Viktig signal i en vanskelig tid for Litauen.

Gjenoppbygging og demokratisering av nasjonen Litauen Gjennom 25 år bidro ÅM til å gjenoppbygge og demokratisere landet Litauen. Da han kom hit i 1990 var dette et grått og nedslitt land, preget av 50 års Sovjetokkupasjon. Lite var igjen av landet som over tre hundreår (1300 – 1600) var Europas største.

GAMLEBYEN I VILNIUS, LITAUEN

Å redde, bevare og gjenoppbygge Gamlebyen i Vilnius, Litauen, har vært hans hovedlivsverk som arkitekt og byutvikler, gjennom årene 1992-2012. Dette er en av Europas største og mest genuine gamlebyer – med dype røtter og eksisterende bygninger helt fra Middelalderen – for 500 år siden regnet som en av verdens tre ledende renessanse-byer ved siden av Milano og Firenze. Nå er dette påny en levende by full av historie, flotte bygninger og dynamikk! 27

Aage made significant contributions to the historic preservation of Vilnius’ architecture, particularly in its heritage of wooden structures that are integral to the face of the city. His positive attitude and focus on urban development that was forward thinking and modern were very much appreciated by the city and its planners. Under Aage’s leadership, the Vilnius International Club provided a forum for professionals of many diverse opinions to come together for discussions and served as a voice for the business community to express its ideas and concerns for the future of the city’s urban development. C) EN TIDLIGERE VISE-BORGERMESTER - Architect Aage Myhre is a well-known person in Vilnius, capital of Lithuania. He arrived in Vilnius during the very beginning of Lithuanian independence, and his activities were for more than twenty years very useful for our Capital. Our country needed Western style thinking and expertise in urban planning, design, construction, services as well as promotion of our country and city. A. Myhre was the architect and developer for hotels, restaurants and other buildings in Vilnius, very different from surrounding, Soviet style buildings. His remarks concerning renovation of Old town were very useful and on time for Vilnius Municipality, and the building materials he imported from Norway represented a new step forwards in the reconstruction of Vilnius. His creation of the Lithuanian Think Tank was a big step to find and promote new ideas in our country’s development. A. Myhre also brought new thinking in social life to our Capital. As President of Vilnius International Club and editor of the VilNews magazine he used much efforts to promote our nice city and country abroad. All this became big motivation factors for business people from all the world to find new, attractive possibilities in Lithuania. As a former Vice-Mayor of Vilnius City and later General director of Lithuanian Chamber of Commerce I had very much contact with Aage Myhre and I often used his advices for business and city development. The collaboration was very fruitful, and his energy and knowledge as architect, community builder and editor was very useful. BYUTVIKLING HAR VÆRT ET HOVEDFOKUS SIDEN 1980-TALLET

ÅM ledet tidlig på 2000tallet arbeidene med å planlegge en ny-by utenfor Vilnius. Målet var å bygge en trivelig, grønn og energieffektiv småby for folk i alle aldre – med boliger, skoler, kultur, kontorer, butikker, hoteller, fritidsaktiviteter og mye mer innenfor ett og samme område. Ny-byen skulle huse 20.000 mennesker. Dessverre satte finanskrisen i 2008 en effektiv stopper for planene. 36

Krisesenter for kvinner i Litauens havneby Klaipeda ÅM har arbeidet med såkalt ”healing architecture” i mange år (se eksempel under og på neste side). Arkitekter glemmer, eller vet ikke, at våre hus kan gjøre viktige ting for mange mennesker. Langt ut over det å være tak over hodet eller såkalt “genial design”.

Krisesenteret for kvinner i havnebyen Klaipeda ble kåret til årets EU-prosjekt i Litauen i 2013.

Aage‘s project management and architectural experience made the crisis centre more human and purpose oriented „Aage was a brilliant mediator and project leader for Women crisis centre construction in Klaipeda, Lithuania. His task was both to supervise project in the name of sponsor Espersen AS and coordinate it with Klaipeda municipality as beneficiary. I am sure that Aage‘s project management and architectural experience made the crisis centre more human and purpose oriented. Currently it serves as temporary shelter for up to 18 families in crisis. Despite its anonymous outlook, building is extremely cozy and convenient for short term stays. Arkitekt Myhre koordinerte arbeidet med “Krisesenter for Kvinner” på en eksemplarisk måte Arkitekt Aage Myhre representerte A. Espersen A/S i byggingen av et krisesenter for kvinner i Klaipeda, Litauen, der også EU og Klaipeda Kommune deltok (2009-2012). Photos: Aage Myhre I 2006 ble byutvikleren, småbrukeren fra Senja, invitert til et opphold i India av og under indisk UDs "Distinguished Visitors Programme", et program forbeholdt utenlandske forskere, intellektuelle, kjente personligheter innen politikk, akademia, kunst og kultur. Det ble en fantastisk reise med opplevelser og lærdom man knapt kan drømme om! 40

ÅM arbeidet tett med Sør-Afrika, og representerte over noen år dette landet i Litauen. Den store andelen litauiske jøder i SA var et hovedfokus.

Ny-byen Century City in Cape Town var et attraktivt studieobjekt for ÅM.

Det jødiske museet I Cape Town er nesten mer litauisk enn Litauen selv. Litauiske jøder har i 150 år spilt uvurderlige roller i Sør-Afrika.

I mange år var ÅM sjefredaktør for de ledende engelskspråklige publikasjonene i Litauen

Aage was instrumental not only in coordinating President Landsbergis’ landmark visit to Norway in 1990, but also in coordinating with international media and other institutions to allow the greatest possible global coverage of Lithuania’s independence struggle with the USSR - Aage Myhre and I became acquainted in conjunction with the documentary-inthe-making, GameChanger: Lithuania’s Non-violent Revolution. The director approached Aage about an interview, since Aage had been instrumental not only in coordinating President Landsbergis’ landmark visit to Norway in 1990, but also in coordinating with international media and other institutions to allow the greatest possible global coverage of Lithuania’s independence struggle with the USSR, and the egregious violence ensuing from the USSR against Lithuania. As a Norwegian, this was not Aage’s fight, yet he chose to get involved and assist where he could, undoubtedly risking his own safety. Every single person who worked towards the goal of Lithuania’s independence were key to its success, but those who had no skin in the game were able to get their countries and governments involved in a way that Lithuanians could not. Their contributions were invaluable and are treasured. Thus an interview with Aage would be key to understanding the events of the time from a close-up and very involved perspective both in and outside of Lithuania. Since then, in the course of the last few years Aage and I have worked on other Lithuania related projects such as the news magazine he publishes, VilNews, and its related websites and Facebook pages and groups, VilNews, and VilNews Forum. These are some of his efforts, within which he continues to function as an objective editor, provider of interesting and relevant news and topics related to Lithuania and the Baltics, and as an inclusive community builder, but not all. He brought Statoil into Lithuania, and built a lumber company there, founded the Vilnius International Club, led drives to donate to orphanages, hospitals and families in need, among other contributions. He is also a gifted and dedicated architect who utilizes his skills and creativity to build and preserve for the future, for communities, while at the same time contributing where it is needed. He has renovated and rebuilt deteriorating parts of the old town in Vilnius, and was involved in having it recognized as a UNESCO Heritage site. His “healing architecture” provides the foundation for much of his work, including the crisis center for women in Klaipeda. Aage’s expertise and experience in media communications and marketing, international and industry cooperation, urban and trade development, along with his knowledge of food and history, and passion for community building have resulted in the success of his undertakings. "I know Aage Myhre since 2008 when I had worked for his company in Vilnius. It was a pleasure to work with a strong personality who has a special sense of humor. I know Aage as great architect full of amazing ideas and plenty of ways to realise them. Due to Aage’s personal charm, organizing abilities and leadership the meetings of the club used to be very popular, numerous and giving a good opportunity to know Lithuania by means of invited lecturers, speakers, social or cultural activist. Holiday celebrations and entertaining part of the club was another important factor bringing club members together. VilNews.com is probably the project having demanded the biggest time, efforts and professionalism input made by Aage Myhre. Until now it is the largest Lithuanian news and life portal covering all the most important spheres of life in Lithuania. In the South African context, Aage displayed a strong sense of understanding of the injustices of the past - I first met Aage on his trip to South Africa in November 2006 and was impressed with his passion for the modern independent Lithuania, as well as his appreciation and empathy for its centuries long Litvak community with its rich culture culminating in the tragic and painful consequences of the nazi occupation of Lithuania. In the South African context, Aage displayed a strong sense of understanding of the injustices of the past, and the birth of a democratic new South Africa with the fragile development of its still imperfect democracy. During my visit to Lithuania in 2007, Aage went out of his way to help me locate and visit the family homes where my Late Parents grew up in Panavezes and Kupishkes, and even accompanied me to the Jewish part of the Vilnius Cemetary where my Aunty is buried. Aage personally acted as a tour guide to help me experience the “sights and sounds” of modern Vilnius, alongside the streets once occupied by Litvaks. I was further always impressed with the pride that Aage displayed relating to the strong democratic principles for which Norway and the Scandinavian Countries are well known. Are architectural traditions important for a nation?

Norway has much distinctive architecture, the oldest more than 1,000 years old. A few monumental buildings, such as the Nidaros Cathedral in Trondheim, showed early on that we here in far north were influenced by styles and ideas from further south in Europe. But our most important buildings throughout the past centuries have been wood and brick buildings with more primeval Norwegian styles. Storehouses, wharves, residential houses and stave churches radiated all fine humanity with their dimensions, materials and closeness to nature and landscapes. They were also very, very beautiful ... Such buildings and environments are Norway at its very best. We are granted the privilege of living in one of the world’s most beautiful but also most exposed countries to climate and other rough conditions. Our forefathers and mothers knew how to adapt lovely buildings to various natural formations, while the houses were clustered and designed to protect against weather and wild animals. Such prudence, humility and compliance to traditions have we seen little of over the past decades. We seem NOT to be proud of where we come from ...

Ă&#x2026;M har skapt et topp morderne, svĂŚrt lys bygg der man i fasadene kan kjenne igjen byens historie.

Samiskinspirert høyfjellshotell Samiske symboler har sterk symbolikk i seg, og bør absolutt tillegges vekt når man tegner bygninger i Nord-Norge. Det har ÅM forsøkt å gjøre, på mange ulike måter, i dette høyfjellshotellet.

Aquakultur-anlegg kamuflert som langhus fra Vikingtiden, 2017 Bygninger for fiskeoppdrett, industri, logistikk, lager, idrett og kjøpesentre fremstår altfor ofte som ruvende; dårlig tilpasset terreng og omgivelser. Her i Lofoten har ÅM løst dette ved å ’kamuflere’ hallene som langhus fra Vikingtiden, a la Borg i Lofoten.

Hele/halve hvelvede båter av glass – rotfestet i nordnorsk fiskerihistorie

Sjøsamer og andre fiskere som rodde Lofoten på 1800tallet var vant til å ro og seile langt, svært langt. ÅMs egen bestefar var en av dem. Hver vinter rodde og seilte han 800 km fra Gamvik i Finnmark til Lofoten. Overnattingen under tre kalde vintermåneder var å dra båten på land og hvelve den for å ha tak over hodet. ÅM har tegnet hvelvede båter i glass – noen halve med rorbuer foran – som kan minne oss om våre stolte, men hardbarkede kysttradisjoner her i Nord-Norge. 65

Nord-Norge mistet mye av sin egen stolte byggekultur og identitet etter krigen, og fortsatt mangler forståelse for hvor uhyre viktig denne identiteten er for oss. Det er ikke akseptabelt. Vi må ta vare på og bygge videre på de gode tradisjoner landsdelens forfedre så fint viste oss. Vi må igjen lære oss å lytte til landskap, vær, uvær og det som en gang så fint karakteriserte vår ville, vakre landsdel. “The mother art is architecture.
