Day 04 – Sunday - September 18, 2016

Cape Town

First we transfer to Table Mountain (weather permitting) well known for its spectacular views. The new revolving cable cars (tickets provided) give stunning views over the city. The summit of Cape Town’s world-famous landmark is 1,086 meters/3,258 feet above sea level and the mountain itself is a national monument. From the summit you can marvel at the awe-inspiring 360-degree view of the city.

After lunch take a walk to the nearby jetty at the Clock tower in the Victoria & Alfred Waterfront for the half hour boat ride to Robben Island, cruel home of Nelson Mandela for so many years. Robben Island is now a World Heritage Site with stunning views across the bay with Table Mountain as its backdrop. For nearly 400 years Robben Island, 7½miles/12kms off the coast from Cape Town was a place of banishment, exile, isolation and imprisonment. It is a highly charged and emotional moment when you visit the site of this suffering, and realize how far South Africa has come from those days. We then wind our way along the legendary Chapman’s Peak Drive, hugging the cliffs and relishing the breathtaking ocean views. After a stop for lunch (your own account) we visit the wild and beautiful Cape of Good Hope Section of the Table Mountain National Park, an integral part of the world-renowned Cape Floral Kingdom. You will have the opportunity to ride the Flying Dutchman funicular (optional and own account) to the old lighthouse for awe-inspiring views! Day 09 Friday – September 23, 2016

Johannesburg/Depart

After breakfast today, you will take a half day Private Soweto Tour. You know the name. It’s a legend. SOWETO, acronym for South Western Township, is home to over 2 million people, who, despite living in crowded and chaotic conditions, have a tangible sense of community, one which ironically, the ordered, walled, elitist northern suburbs lack. Inside Soweto, you’ll visit the Hector Pieterson Museum, and discover the cause of the tragic riots which led to his death; we pass Mandela House, and give you time to visit this fascinating little museum (own account). Your journey continues to Regina Mundi Church, site of many secret underground meetings of the then banned political parties. Finally you are taken past the largest stadium in Africa, Soccer City, host of the 2010 FIFA World Cup Final - this magnificent stadium is now nicknamed ‘The Calabash’ for its resemblance to the African Pot. Soweto is unlike a suburb you’ve ever seen or been to, yet the history of struggle encapsulated here is a cornerstone of the South African story. After the tour, you will be transferred from your hotel to Johannesburg’s OR Tambo International Airport for your flight back home. (B, L)
