GANNETT FOUNDATION AWARD FOR INNOVATION IN WATCHDOG JOURNALISM AAJA, in partnership with the Gannett Foundation, is offering an award, which recognizes groundbreaking work by a journalist or a team that creatively uses digital tools in the role of being a community’s watchdog. Special consideration is given to journalism that helps a community understand and address important issues. Criteria for evaluating innovation include interactivity, creation of new tools, innovative adaptation of existing tools, and creative use of any digital medium. An entry will consist of a single story, series or package on a single subject. This award is funded by a grant from the Gannett Foundation.

AWARD PRIZE

The award prize is $5,000.

JUDGING AND AWARDS

Entries are based on the quality of work submitted. Judges are professional journalists.The winner will be notified in advance of the UNITY Convention and the award will be presented on August 3, 2012 at the AAJA Gala Scholarship and Awards Banquet. The entrant need not be present to win. 1) Email ONE electronic set or mail FIVE sets of the following along with copies of the completed entry form: O A separate sheet titled “Gannett Foundation Award” with (a) Entrant’s name as written on this form, (b) title of entry, (c) description (50 words or less) of the submitted work. If this is a team submission, include credits on the same page. O The following with each page or piece clearly marked or labeled with (a) Entrant’s name as written on the form, (b) title of entry, (publication name or station/network, (d) date published or aired and (e) a link where the piece can be viewed if the piece is electronic. O Provide hard copies no larger than 11” x 17”, or CD’s or DVD’s (include length of either), or URL address of web site where entry was published, or include photos with photo captions. Picture stories or sequences must be numbered.
